We use a three-dimensional mixed-wet random network model representing Berea sandstone to compute displacement paths and relative permeabilities for water alternating gas (WAG) flooding. First we reproduce cycles of water and gas injection observed in previously published experimental studies. We predict the measured oil, water and gas relative permeabilities accurately. We discuss the hysteresis trends in the water and gas relative permeabilities and compare the behavior of water-wet and oil-wet media. We interpret the results in terms of pore-scale displacements. In water-wet media the water relative permeability is lower during water injection in the presence of gas due to an increase in oil/water capillary pressure that causes a decrease in wetting layer conductance. The gas relative permeability is higher for displacement cycles after first gas injection at high gas saturation due to cooperative pore filling, but lower at low saturation due to trapping. In oil-wet media, the water relative permeability remains low until water-filled elements span the system at which point the relative permeability increases rapidly. The gas relative permeability is lower in the presence of water than oil because it is no longer the most non-wetting phase.  相似文献

Low-tension gas (LTG) flooding is a promising chemical enhanced oil recovery technique in tight sandstone and carbonate reservoirs where polymer may not be used because of plugging and degradation issues. This process has been the subject of many experimental studies. However, theoretical investigation of the LTG process is scarce in the literature. Hence, in this study, we lay out a displacement theory for LTG flooding, with a constant mobility reduction factor, which lays the groundwork for further theoretical studies. The proposed model is based on the three-phase flow of water, oil, and gas in the presence of a water-soluble surfactant component. Under the developed model, we study the effect of MRF and oil viscosity on the flow dynamics and oil recovery. Moreover, we explain experimental observations on early gas breakthrough that occurs during LTG core floods even in the presence of a stable foam drive.

Chemical flooding in the petroleum industry has a larger scale of oil recovery efficiency than water flooding. On the other hand, it is far more technical, costly, and risky. Numerical reservoir simulation can be employed to conduct mechanism study, feasibility evaluation, pilot plan optimization, and performance prediction for chemical flooding to improve recovery efficiency and reduce operational costs. In this article, we study numerical simulation of chemical flooding such as alkaline, surfactant, polymer, and foam (ASP+foam) flooding. The main displacement mechanisms in this type of flooding are interfacial tension lowering, capillary desaturation, chemical synergetic effects, and mobility control. The model of chemical flooding involves such physicochemical phenomena as dispersion, diffusion, adsorption, chemical reactions, and in situ generation of surfactant from acidic crude oil. The numerical simulator is based on a sequential solution approach that solves both pressure and compositions implicitly, and is applied to three experiments, a chemical flow without mass transfer between phases, a laboratory sandstone core, and an ASP+foam displacement problem with mass transfer, and to a real oilfield. A comparison with UTCHEM is also performed. These applications and comparison indicate that this numerical simulator is practical, efficient, and accurate for simulating complex chemical flooding processes.   相似文献

We present results of high-pressure micromodel visualizations of pore-scale fluid distribution and displacement mechanisms during the recovery of residual oil by near-miscible hydrocarbon gas and SWAG (simultaneous water and gas) injection under conditions of very low gas–oil IFT (interfacial tension), negligible gravity forces and water-wet porous medium. We demonstrate that a significant amount of residual oil left behind after waterflooding can be recovered by both near-miscible gas and SWAG injection. In particular, we show that in both processes, the recovery of the contacted residual oil continues behind the main gas front and ultimately all of the oil that can be contacted by the gas will be recovered. This oil is recovered by a microscopic mechanism, which is strongly linked to the low IFT between the oil and gas and to the perfect spreading of the oil over water, both of which occur as the critical point of the gas–oil system is approached. Ultimate oil recovery by near-miscible SWAG injection was as high as near-miscible gas injection with SWAG injection using much less gas compared to gas injection. Comparison of the results of SWAG experiments with two different gas fractional flow values (SWAG ratio) of 0.5 and 0.2 shows that fractional flow of the near-miscible gas injected simultaneously with water is not a crucial factor for ultimate oil recovery. This makes SWAG injection an attractive IOR (improved oil recovery) process especially for reservoirs, where continuous and high-rate gas injection is not possible (e.g. due to supply constraint).  相似文献

A dynamic pore network model, capable of predicting the displacement of oil from a porous medium by a wettability-altering and interfacial tension reducing surfactant solution, is presented. The key ingredients of the model are (1) a dynamic network model for the displacement of oil by aqueous phase taking account of capillary and viscous effects, (2) a simulation of the transport of surfactant through the network by advection and diffusion taking account of adsorption on the solid surface, and (3) the coupling of these two by linking the contact angle and interfacial tension appearing in the dynamic network simulation to the local concentration of surfactant computed in the transport simulation. The coupling is two-way: The flow field used to advect the surfactant concentration is that associated with the displacement of oil by the injected aqueous phase, and the surfactant concentration influences the flow field through its effect on the capillarity parameters. We present results obtained using the model to validate that it reproduces the displacement patterns observed by other authors in two-dimensional networks as capillary number and mobility ratio are varied, and to illustrate the effects of surfactant on displacement patterns. A mechanism is demonstrated whereby in an initially mixed-wet medium, surfactant-induced wettability alteration can lead to stabilization of displacement fronts.  相似文献

This contribution reports on the phase and interfacial tension behavior of some model high-temperature–high-pressure gas condensates. On the one hand these types of gas condensate are becoming a subject of major interest for the oil industry, while on the other their phase and interfacial tension behavior have not been very well studied. For two different model gas condensates, both composed of the three n-alkanes, methane, butane, and decane, experimental results on their fluid phase behavior have been obtained in the temperature region 270 < T (K) < 490 and up to pressures as high as 24 MPa. Also, critical points of the two mixtures have been determined experimentally. Both mixtures show an extended retrograde region. Using the Peng–Robinson equation of state, the phase behavior of the two mixtures was modeled. In addition, the interfacial tension behavior of the model gas condensates was modeled. For that purpose, the Cahn–Hilliard theory was applied in combination with the Peng–Robinson equation of state. Satisfactory results were obtained.  相似文献

Rock fractures transmit underground gas effectively once they have sufficient widths and interconnection. However, the fracture geometries needed for gas transport are strongly influenced by surrounding pressure conditions. In order to inspect and quantify the influence of surrounding pressure, we design and manufacture a set of gas flow apparatus that can be connected to the MTS815 material testing system, which provides loads and exhibits external pressures in the experiment. With the apparatus and MTS815, we test the fractured samples of sandstone and coal and obtain their relationship between permeability and external pressure. In particular, our permeability calculation based on collection of gas flux and pressure difference has involved the influence of non-Darcian flow. In addition, our study also includes a numerical simulation in the RFPA software platform to display the internal field changes of cracks. The results show that fracture permeability strongly depends on confining pressure, and a critical pressure probably occurs, about 1.5–2 MPa in our experiments, to split each of the permeability curves into two stages, a slow climb and an exponential rush. As a complement, the numerical simulation also demonstrates one more stage for the permeability curve, the post-rush steady fluctuation.  相似文献

As gas flooding becomes a more viable means of enhanced oil recovery, it is important to identify and understand the pore-scale flow mechanisms, both for the development of improved gas flooding applications and for the predicting phase mobilisation under secondary and tertiary gas flooding. The purpose of this study was to visually investigate the pore-level mechanisms of oil recovery by near-miscible secondary and tertiary gas floods. High-pressure glass micromodels and model fluids representing a near-miscible fluid system were used for the flow experiments. A new pore-scale recovery mechanism was identified which significantly contributed to oil recovery through enhanced flow and cross-flow between the bypassed pores and the injected gas. This mechanism is strongly related to a very low gas/oil interfacial tension (IFT), perfect wetting conditions and simultaneous flow of gas and oil in the same pore, all of which occur as the gas/oil critical point is approached. The results of this study helps us to better understand the pore-scale mechanisms of oil recovery in very low-IFT (near-miscible) systems. In particular we show that in near-miscible gas floods, behind the main gas front, the recovery of the oil continues by cross-flow from the bypassed pores into the main flow stream and as a result almost all of the oil, which has been contacted by the gas, could be recovered. Our observations in high-pressure micromodel experiments have demonstrated that this mechanism can only occur in near-miscible processes (as opposed to immiscible and completely miscible processes), which makes oil displacement by near-miscible gas floods a very effective process.  相似文献

We have developed a mathematical model describing the process of microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). The one-dimensional isothermal model comprises displacement of oil by water containing bacteria and substrate for their feeding. The bacterial products are both bacteria and metabolites. In the context of MEOR modeling, a novel approach is partitioning of metabolites between the oil and the water phases. The partitioning is determined by a distribution coefficient. The transfer part of the metabolite to oil phase is equivalent to its ”disappearance,” so that the total effect from of metabolite in the water phase is reduced. The metabolite produced is surfactant reducing oil–water interfacial tension, which results in oil mobilization. The reduction of interfacial tension is implemented through relative permeability curve modifications primarily by lowering residual oil saturation. The characteristics for the water phase saturation profiles and the oil recovery curves are elucidated. However, the effect from the surfactant is not necessarily restricted to influence only interfacial tension, but it can also be an approach for changing, e.g., wettability. The distribution coefficient determines the time lag, until residual oil mobilization is initialized. It has also been found that the final recovery depends on the distance from the inlet before the surfactant effect takes place. The surfactant effect position is sensitive to changes in maximum growth rate, and injection concentrations of bacteria and substrate, thus determining the final recovery. Different methods for incorporating surfactant-induced reduction of interfacial tension into models are investigated. We have suggested one method, where several parameters can be estimated in order to obtain a better fit with experimental data. For all the methods, the incremental recovery is very similar, only coming from small differences in water phase saturation profiles. Overall, a significant incremental oil recovery can be achieved, when the sensitive parameters in the context of MEOR are carefully dealt with.  相似文献

Relative permeability of gas gains great significance in exploring unconventional gas. This paper developed a universal relative permeability model of gas, which is applicable for unconventional gas reservoirs such as coal, tight sandstone and shale. The model consists of the absolute relative permeability of gas and the gas slippage permeability. In the proposed model, the effects of water saturation and mean pore pressure on gas slippage permeability are taken into account. Subsequently, the evaluation of the model with existing model is done and then the validation of the model is made with data of tight sandstones, coals and shales from published literatures. The modeling results illustrate that a strong power-law relationship between relative permeability of gas and water saturation and the contribution of gas slippage permeability to relative permeability is determined by water saturation and mean pore pressure simultaneously. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis of the impact of the parameters in the model is conducted and their effects are discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents a quantitative investigation of the interfacial tension dependent relative permeability (IFT-DRP) and displacement efficiency of supercritical CO2 injection into gas-condensate reservoirs. A high-pressure high-temperature experimental laboratory was established to simulate reservoir conditions and to perform relative permeability measurements on sandstone cores at a constant reservoir temperature of 95°C and displacement velocity of 10 cm/h. This investigation covers immiscible displacements (1100 and 2100 psi), near-miscible displacement (3000 psi) and miscible displacements (4500 and 5900 psi). The coreflooding results demonstrated that displacement pressure is a key factor governing the attainment of optimum sweep efficiency. The ultimate condensate recovery increased by almost threefold when CO2 was injected at near-miscible conditions (i.e., 23.40% ultimate recovery at 1100 psi compared to 69.70% at 3000 psi). Miscible flooding was found to give the optimum condensate recovery (9% extra ultimate recovery compared to near-miscible injection). Besides improving the ultimate recovery, miscible floods provided better mobility ratios and delayed gas breakthrough (0.62 PV BT at 5900 psi compared to 0.21 PV BT at 1100 psi). In addition to the elimination of IFT forces in miscible displacements, favourable ratios of fluid properties and phase behaviour relationships between the SCCO2 and condensate were believed to be the driving force for the improved recovery as they provided a stabilising effect on the displacement front and stimulated swelling of the condensate volume. This paper incorporates the theoretical aspects of phase behaviour and fluid properties that largely affect the microscopic displacement efficiency and serves as a practical guideline for operators to aid their project designs and enhance their recovery capabilities.  相似文献

We investigated the mechanism of residual gas trapping at a microscopic level. We imaged trapped air bubbles in a Berea sandstone chip after spontaneous imbibition at atmospheric pressure. The pore structure and trapped bubbles were observed by microfocused X-ray computed tomography. Distributions of trapped bubbles in Berea and Tako sandstone were imaged in coreflooding at a capillary number of 1.0 × 10−6. Trapped bubbles are of two types, those occupying the center of the pore with a pore-scale size and others having a pore-network scale size. In low-porosity media such as sandstone, connected bubbles contribute greatly to trapped gas saturation. Effects of capillary number and injected water volume were investigated using a packed bed of glass beads 600μm in diameter, which had high porosity (38%). The trapped N2 bubbles are stable against the water flow rate corresponding to a capillary number of 1.0 × 10−4.  相似文献

We present a pore-scale network model of two- and three-phase flow in disordered porous media. The model reads three-dimensional pore networks representing the pore space in different porous materials. It simulates wide range of two- and three-phase pore-scale displacements in porous media with mixed-wet wettability. The networks are composed of pores and throats with circular and angular cross sections. The model allows the presence of multiple phases in each angular pore. It uses Helmholtz free energy balance and Mayer–Stowe–Princen (MSP) method to compute threshold capillary pressures for two- and three-phase displacements (fluid configuration changes) based on pore wettability, pore geometry, interfacial tension, and initial pore fluid occupancy. In particular, it generates thermodynamically consistent threshold capillary pressures for wetting and spreading fluid layers resulting from different displacement events. Threshold capillary pressure equations are presented for various possible fluid configuration changes. By solving the equations for the most favorable displacements, we show how threshold capillary pressures and final fluid configurations may vary with wettability, shape factor, and the maximum capillary pressure reached during preceding displacement processes. A new cusp pore fluid configuration is introduced to handle the connectivity of the intermediate wetting phase at low saturations and to improve model’s predictive capabilities. Based on energy balance and geometric equations, we show that, for instance, a gas-to-oil piston-like displacement in an angular pore can result in a pore fluid configuration with no oil, with oil layers, or with oil cusps. Oil layers can then collapse to form cusps. Cusps can shrink and disappear leaving no oil behind. Different displacement mechanisms for layer and cusp formation and collapse based on the MSP analysis are implemented in the model. We introduce four different layer collapse rules. A selected collapse rule may generate different corner configuration depending on fluid occupancies of the neighboring elements and capillary pressures. A new methodology based on the MSP method is introduced to handle newly created gas/water interfaces that eliminates inconsistencies in relation between capillary pressures and pore fluid occupancies. Minimization of Helmholtz free energy for each relevant displacement enables the model to accurately determine the most favorable displacement, and hence, improve its predictive capabilities for relative permeabilities, capillary pressures, and residual saturations. The results indicate that absence of oil cusps and the previously used geometric criterion for the collapse of oil layers could yield lower residual oil saturations than the experimentally measured values in two- and three-phase systems.  相似文献

Due to the high permeability of water flow in crushed rocks, flow catastrophes and water inrush accidents are apt to take place in the broken zones of aquifers in coal mining engineering. The pore, crack and fracture geometries needed for water transport are strongly influenced by grains diameter size and axial displacement conditions. In order to inspect and quantify the influence, we designed and manufactured a water flow apparatus that can be connected to the electro-hydraulic servo-controlled test system MTS815.02 which provides loading pressure in the experiment. Using the apparatus and MTS system, we tested crushed mudstone, limestone and sandstone specimens and obtained the relationship between permeability and variable grain diameter of a (2.5–5 mm), b (5–10 mm), c (10–15 mm), d (15–20 mm) and e (mixed sizes) under variable axial displacement (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 mm). In particular, the permeability calculation based on collection of water flow velocity and pore pressure gradient difference has involved the influence of non-Darcy flow. The results show that (1) The porosity decreases with the increase of axial displacement and decrease of bigger particle size, respectively. Particle crushing during compaction is a main cause of size 0–2.5 mm appearing, some fine particles be washed away is a main cause of weight loss because of the effect of water seepage. (2) Water flow properties of crushed rocks are found to be strongly influenced by axial displacement and grain diameter size; in general, the permeability decreases with the increase of axial displacement and the decrease of grain diameter, respectively. (3) The fluctuations of permeability–axial displacement are especially intense for mudstone and sandstone than that for limestone. The permeability of crushed rocks is not only related to loading levels but also to grain diameters, style of arrangement. (4) To each grain diameter sizes, the permeability change of sandstone has a greater value than that of mudstone and limestone. The permeability of crushed mudstone shows much less than that of limestone and sandstone.  相似文献

Immobilization and trapping of carbon dioxide (CO2) enhances the security of geological storage. Trapping mechanisms have been characterized in four groups: structural, residual, dissolution, and mineralization. While structural trapping acts immediately when injection starts and is well investigated, the contribution of residual and dissolution trapping increases over storage time and these contributions need to be better understood for better predictions. This paper focuses on an experimental pore-scale investigation of residual and capillary trapping. CO2?Cwater imbibition experiments were conducted in micromodels whose homogenous pore space is geometrically and topologically similar to Berea sandstone. Microvisual data, photographs and video footage, describes the trapping mechanism and, especially, the disconnection and shrinkage of the CO2 phase. Results show that depending on the flow rate of the imbibing water different trapping mechanisms are observed. Lower flow rates, comparable to the trailing edge of a CO2 plume, lead to more snap-off events and greater trapped residual saturation, whereas rates comparable to the near wellbore area during enhanced sequestration showed displacement of gas bubbles and greater dissolution that ultimately leads to very low or zero gas saturations. Furthermore, complete dissolution events showed that homogenous as well as heterogeneous dissolution occurs. Whereas the latter is subdivided into microbubble formation and dissolution on crevices or pore roughness, the former occurs without the influence of pore walls. Based on the observations we suggest that the type of rock and its roughness as well as the fines present at the CO2 brine interface are important factors determining the dissolution mechanism.  相似文献

The concept of immiscible displacement as an invasion percolation (IP) process driven by heat and mass transfer is used in a pore network model for convective drying of capillary porous media. The coupling between heat and mass transfer occurs at the liquid–gas interface through temperature-dependent equilibrium vapor pressure and surface tension as well as the phase change enthalpy (in evaporation and condensation). The interfacial effects due to capillary forces and gravity are combined in an invasion potential; viscous forces are neglected. Simulation results show stabilized invasion patterns and finite drying front width by the influence of gravity.  相似文献
