Summary The control of dynamic deformation of a laminate plate is conducted by applying electrical load to a piezoelectric actuator integrated into the laminate. The dynamic behavior of the laminate is analyzed in the paper taking into account the effect of transverse shear. The analytical model of the laminate is composed of fiber-reinforced laminae and piezoelectric layers constituting a symmetric cross-ply laminate rectangular plate with simply-supported egdes. It is subjected to mechanical and electrical loads acting on the piezoelectric actuator in order to compensate the effect of the mechanical loads. The behavior of the laminate is analyzed based on the first-order shear deformation theory. Closed-form solutions are obtained for the following quantities: (1) natural frequencies of the laminate plate, (2) weight functions for the deflections and rotations and (3) transient deflections due to loads varying arbitrarily with time. Illustrative examples are shown for the control of deflections caused by the mechanical loads by means of electrical voltage applied to the piezoelectric actuators.

Non-linear dynamics behavior of a thin isotropic laminate in a simply supported boundary condition is studied for its response with both mechanical and thermal loads in effect. The thermal effects of both the in-plane and transverse non-uniform temperature variations in steady-state are considered. The equation of motion for the laminate deflection is reduced to the Duffing equation in a decoupled modal form by means of a generalized Galerkin's method. The stress field as a function of deflection and temperature variation is also obtained in a plane stress condition for its non-linear elastic behavior with von Karman strain field. For an exemplary laminated microstructure used as a printed wiring board, it is found that a high rise of the in-plane temperature increases the resonance frequency and could significantly increase the stresses of the lamina. The through thickness temperature variation has no significant effect on the deflection. Failure analysis is also made based on the composite failure criteria for a laminate to identify the critical mechanical and thermal loads.

Thermal postbuckling analysis and the axisymmetric static and dynamic snap-through phenomena due to static/sudden uniform lateral pressure in a thermally postbuckled functionally graded material circular plate are performed in this research. Plate is formulated using the first order shear deformation plate theory. Thermo-mechanical properties of the plate are assumed to be temperature dependent where dependency is described according to the higher order Touloukian representation. Two types of temperature loading are considered. Uniform temperature rise and heat conduction across the thickness direction. The one dimensional heat conduction equation in the thickness direction is obtained and discreted via the central finite difference method. The obtained system of equations is nonlinear since the thermal conductivity itself is a function of the unknown nodal temperatures. Using the von-Kármán assumptions, the governing equations of the plate are obtained in a matrix representation with the aid of the conventional Ritz method whose shape functions are developed using the Gram-Schmidt process. At first thermal postbuckling analysis is performed which is a nonlinear problem with respect to both temperature and displacements. Afterwards, response of the bulged thermally postbuckled plate is obtained under the static and dynamic uniform pressure. Snap-through phenomenon may be observed in both static and dynamic loading cases, due to the immovability of the edge of the plate and the initial deflection caused by postbuckling deflection. To capture the snapping phenomenon and trace the path beyond the limit loads, cylindrical arch-length technique is used. In dynamic snap-through analysis, the effect of structural damping is also included. Numerical results of this study reveal that the structure is sensitive to the initial deflection caused by thermal postbuckling load. Increasing the temperature prior to mechanical loads enhances the snap-through intensity and also increases both the upper and lower limit loads. As shown, dynamic snap-through loads are lower than the static ones, however dynamic snap-through intensity is more than the static snap-though intensity. Furthermore, structural damping enhances the dynamic buckling loads of the plate and decreases the dynamic postbuckling deflection of the plate.

The improved zigzag theory recently developed by the authors for smart, piezoelectric, and laminated cylindrical shells is assessed for the response of finite-length cross-ply shells and shell panels under mechanical, potential, and thermal loading, in direct comparison with the exact three-dimensional (3D) piezothermoelasticity solution. This theory has the unique features of including the transverse normal strain due to thermoelectric loading without introducing additional deflection variables, capturing the nonlinear potential field and actual temperature profile across laminate thickness, accounting for the layerwise (zigzag) variation of inplane displacements, and satisfying the conditions on transverse shear stresses at the layer interfaces and at the inner and outer surfaces. For the assessment, new results are obtained for the 3D exact solution for smart cylindrical shells having a test laminate with widely different material properties across layers, a piezo-composite laminate and a piezo-sandwich laminate. To ascertain the contribution of the layerwise terms in the inplane displacements, the theory is compared with its smeared counterpart with the same number of primary variables. The effect of inclusion of transverse normal extensibility in these theories is established by comparing with their conventional counterparts that assume constant deflection across the thickness. The effect of span angle (for shell panels), length, and thickness parameters on the error of the 2D theories is illustrated.

In this paper, we analyze the nonlinear dynamic response of an orthotropic laminate in a simply supported boundary condition subject to thermal and mechanical loading. The equation of motion for the laminate’s deflection is obtained in a decoupled Duffing equation by means of a Galerkin-type method without Berger’s approximations. The Duffing equation incorporates an arbitrary thermal field, with both the in-plane and transverse temperature variations in a steady-state and a transient state. The formulation indicates that the transverse temperature variation produces an additional pressure load, while the in-plane temperature variation affects the system frequency. The equation allows for characterization of the laminate behaviors in nonlinear thermal buckling, thermal vibration and thermal mechanical response.

A high-order discrete-layer theory and a finite element are presented for predicting the damping of laminated composite sandwich beams. The new layerwise laminate theory involves quadratic and cubic terms for approximation of the in-plane displacement in each discrete layer, while interlaminar shear stress continuity is imposed through the thickness. Integrated damping mechanics are formulated and both laminate and structural stiffness, mass and damping matrices are formed. A finite element method and a beam element are further developed for predicting the free vibration response, including modal frequencies, modal loss factors and through-thickness mode shapes. Numerical results and evaluations of the present model are shown. Modal frequencies and damping of sandwich composite beams are measured and correlated with predicted values. Finally, parametric studies illustrate the effect of core thickness and face lamination on modal damping and frequency values.

Summary An exact axisymmetric piezothermoelastic solution is presented for a simply-supported hybrid cylindrical shell made of cross-ply composite laminate and piezoelectric layers. Numerical results for hybrid shells are presented for sinusoidal and central band thermal and electrical loads. The effect of the loading, the radius-to-thickness ratio, the span-to-radius ratio and the number of layers of the substrate on the response is investigated. The interface between the substrate and the actuated piezoelectric layer has been found to be subjected to high shear stress. It has been shown that the maximum values of the deflection and the stresses, due to thermal load, can be appreciably reduced by appropriate application of actuation potential. A number of results focusing on the implications brought by the violation of the inter-laminar shear traction continuity requirement on the non-linear response of shear deformable laminated flat and curved panels subjected to thermomechanical loading are presented. The results cover a large number of situations, and in this context, the effects of transverse shear, tangential edge constraints, shell curvature, initial geometric imperfections, lateral pressure and compressive edge loads, membrane and thicknesswise temperature gradient, presence of a Winkler linear/non-linear foundation, coupled with that of the fulfilment/violation of the shear traction interlaminar continuity requirement upon the static and dynamic non-linear response of laminated plates and shells are highlighted. In order to address this problem, as a necessary pre-requisite, a higher-order geometrically non-linear laminated shell model fulfilling both the kinematical and shear traction interlaminar continuity requirements and incorporating the previously mentioned effects is presented. The results obtained in the framework of this laminated shell model are compared with the ones obtained within a higher-order shell model in which the kinematic interlaminar continuity conditions are solely satisfied, and the implications resulting from the violation of the shear traction interlaminar continuity requirement are highlighted.

The non-linear thermo-elasticity response of an orthotropic laminate in a clamped boundary condition is analyzed by means of the method of weighted residuals for its behaviors subject to thermal and mechanical loading. The equation of motion for the laminate's deflection is obtained in the form of a decoupled modal form Duffing equation, without Berger's approximation. The thermal field, with both the in-plane and transverse temperature variations, is incorporated in both a steady-state and transient state. The formulation indicates that a transverse thermal field with a temperature rise produces a load onto the laminate, while the in-plane temperature variation affects the system frequency and stability. We demonstrate the numerical results of the modal response of an isotropic laminate for the thermal buckling and vibration.

The first-order shear deformation theory and the layerwise theory of laminated plates are employed to analyze the edge-effect problem of an antisymmetric angle-ply laminate subjected to arbitrary combinations of extensional and torsional loads. The first-order theory is used for predicting the unknown constant parameters appearing in the reduced displacement field of elasticity which, on the other hand, signify the global behavior of the laminate. A layerwise theory is then utilized to determine the local interlaminar stresses within the boundary-layer regions of laminates. In order to closely examine the behavioral characteristics of interlaminar stresses, various numerical examples are presented for different antisymmetric angle-ply laminates under an axial force and a torque.

The interlaminar stresses and deflections in a laminated rectangular plate under thermal bending were determined by using the generalized differential quadrature method involving the effect of shear deformation. The approximate stress and deflection solutions are obtained under the bending of sinusoidal temperature of thermal load for layer in cross-ply laminates and angle-ply laminates. Numerical results show that the shear deformation has significant effects on the dominant interlaminar stresses and deflections in the laminated plate of thermal bending analysis.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) are gaining increasing applicability to lightweight structures (e.g., automotive applications) due to their outstanding mechanical properties. High-performance parts can be fabricated from CFRPs, but they have the disadvantages of low shear and bearing strength. To achieve detachable connections and introduce loads without decreasing the load-bearing capacity of the composite, it is important to use mechanical fasteners without drilling into the parts. To accomplish this, metal elements called inserts are embedded in the CFRP laminate. Damage behavior in a CFRP under tensile conditions has several different mechanisms, depending primarily on the deformation of the insert. This research investigates the in-situ failure behavior of the composite under tensile loads by investigating the deformation of the insert via computed tomography (CT). The results are also used for validation of the insert’s deformation using a finite-element model (FEM).

In this paper the dynamic analysis of 3-D beam elements restrained at their edges by the most general linear torsional, transverse or longitudinal boundary conditions and subjected in arbitrarily distributed dynamic twisting, bending, transverse or longitudinal loading is presented. For the solution of the problem at hand, a boundary element method is developed for the construction of the 14 × 14 stiffness matrix and the corresponding nodal load vector of a member of an arbitrarily shaped simply or multiply connected cross section, taking into account both warping and shear deformation effects, which together with the respective mass and damping matrices lead to the formulation of the equation of motion. To account for shear deformations, the concept of shear deformation coefficients is used, defining these factors using a strain energy approach. Eight boundary value problems with respect to the variable along the bar angle of twist, to the primary warping function, to a fictitious function, to the beam transverse and longitudinal displacements and to two stress functions are formulated and solved employing a pure BEM approach that is only boundary discretization is used. Both free and forced transverse, longitudinal or torsional vibrations are considered, taking also into account effects of transverse, longitudinal, rotatory, torsional and warping inertia and damping resistance. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the method and demonstrate its efficiency and accuracy. The influence of the warping effect especially in members of open form cross section is analyzed through examples demonstrating the importance of the inclusion of the warping degrees of freedom in the dynamic analysis of a space frame. Moreover, the discrepancy in the dynamic analysis of a member of a spatial structure arising from the ignorance of the shear deformation effect necessitates the inclusion of this additional effect, especially in thick walled cross section members.

The available accurate shell theories satisfy the interlaminar transverse stress continuity conditions based on linear strain-displacement relations. Furthermore, in majority of these theories, either influence of the transverse normal stress and strain or the transverse flexibility of the shell has been ignored. These effects remarkably influence the non-linear behavior of the shells especially in the postbuckling region. Furthermore, majority of the buckling analyses performed so far for the laminated composite and sandwich shells have been restricted to linear, static analysis of the perfect shells. Moreover, almost all the available shell theories have employed the Love-Timoshenko assumption, which may lead to remarkable errors for thick and relatively thick shells. In the present paper, a novel three-dimensional high-order global-local theory that satisfies all the kinematic and the interlaminar stress continuity conditions at the layer interfaces is developed for imperfect cylindrical shells subjected to thermo-mechanical loads. In comparison with the layerwise, mixed, and available global-local theories, the present theory has the advantages of: (1) suitability for non-linear analyses, (2) higher accuracy due to satisfying the complete interlaminar kinematic and transverse stress continuity conditions, considering the transverse flexibility, and releasing the Love-Timoshenko assumption, (3) less required computational time due to using the global-local technique and matrix formulations, and (4) capability of investigating the local phenomena. To enhance the accuracy of the results, compatible Hermitian quadrilateral elements are employed. The buckling loads are determined based on a criterion previously published by the author.

In the present study, the dynamic stability of simply supported, circular cylindrical shells subjected to dynamic axial loads is analysed. Geometric nonlinearities due to finite-amplitude shell motion are considered by using the Donnell’s nonlinear shallow-shell theory. The effect of structural damping is taken into account. A discretization method based on a series expansion involving a relatively large number of linear modes, including axisymmetric and asymmetric modes, and on the Galerkin procedure is developed. Axisymmetric modes are included; indeed, they are essential in simulating the inward deflection of the mean oscillation with respect to the equilibrium position and in describing the axisymmetric deflection due to axial loads. A finite length, simply supported shell is considered; the boundary conditions are satisfied, including the contribution of external axial loads acting at the shell edges. The effect of a contained liquid is investigated. The linear dynamic stability and nonlinear response are analysed by using continuation techniques and direct simulations.
