Consider an ideal I ? K[x 1,…, x n ], with K an arbitrary field, generated by monomials of degree two. Assuming that I does not have a linear resolution, we determine the step s of the minimal graded free resolution of I where nonlinear syzygies first appear, we show that at this step of the resolution nonlinear syzygies are concentrated in degree s + 3, and we compute the corresponding graded Betti number β s, s+3. The multidegrees of these nonlinear syzygies are also determined and the corresponding multigraded Betti numbers are shown to be all equal to 1.  相似文献

We use the correspondence between hypergraphs and their associated edge ideals to study the minimal graded free resolution of squarefree monomial ideals. The theme of this paper is to understand how the combinatorial structure of a hypergraph ℋ appears within the resolution of its edge ideal ℐ(ℋ). We discuss when recursive formulas to compute the graded Betti numbers of ℐ(ℋ) in terms of its sub-hypergraphs can be obtained; these results generalize our previous work (Hà, H.T., Van Tuyl, A. in J. Algebra 309:405–425, 2007) on the edge ideals of simple graphs. We introduce a class of hypergraphs, which we call properly-connected, that naturally generalizes simple graphs from the point of view that distances between intersecting edges are “well behaved.” For such a hypergraph ℋ (and thus, for any simple graph), we give a lower bound for the regularity of ℐ(ℋ) via combinatorial information describing ℋ and an upper bound for the regularity when ℋ=G is a simple graph. We also introduce triangulated hypergraphs that are properly-connected hypergraphs generalizing chordal graphs. When ℋ is a triangulated hypergraph, we explicitly compute the regularity of ℐ(ℋ) and show that the graded Betti numbers of ℐ(ℋ) are independent of the ground field. As a consequence, many known results about the graded Betti numbers of forests can now be extended to chordal graphs. Dedicated to Anthony V. Geramita on the occasion of his 65th birthday.  相似文献

Let ? be the family of graded ideals J in the exterior algebra E of a n-dimensional vector space over a field K such that e(E/J) = dim K (E/J) = e, indeg(E/J) = i and H E/J (i) = dim K (E/J) i are fixed integers. It is shown that there exists a unique lexsegment graded ideal J(n, e, i) ? ? whose Betti numbers give an upper bound for the Betti numbers of the ideals of ?. Abstract

The present work is concerned with characterizing some algebraic invariants of edge ideals of hypergraphs. To this aim, first, we introduce some kinds of combinatorial invariants similar to matching numbers for hypergraphs. Then we compare them to each other and to previously existing ones. These invariants are used for characterizing or bounding some algebraic invariants of edge ideals of hypergraphs such as graded Betti numbers, projective dimension and Castelnouvo–Mumford regularity.

An {a1,…,an}-lex plus powers ideal is a monomial ideal in Ik[x1,…,xn] which minimally contains the regular sequence x1a1,…,xnan and such that whenever mRt is a minimal generator of I and m′∈Rt is greater than m in lex order, then m′∈I. Conjectures of Eisenbud et al. and Charalambous and Evans predict that after restricting to ideals containing a regular sequence in degrees {a1,…,an}, then {a1,…,an}-lex plus powers ideals have extremal properties similar to those of the lex ideal. That is, it is proposed that a lex plus powers ideal should give maximum possible Hilbert function growth (Eisenbud et al.), and, after fixing a Hilbert function, that the Betti numbers of a lex plus powers ideal should be uniquely largest (Charalambous, Evans). The first of these assertions would extend Macaulay's theorem on Hilbert function growth, while the second improves the Bigatti, Hulett, Pardue theorem that lex ideals have largest graded Betti numbers. In this paper we explore these two conjectures. First we give several equivalent forms of each statement. For example, we demonstrate that the conjecture for Hilbert functions is equivalent to the statement that for a given Hilbert function, lex plus powers ideals have the most minimal generators in each degree. We use this result to prove that it is enough to show that lex plus powers ideals have the most minimal generators in the highest possible degree. A similar result holds for the stronger conjecture. In this paper we also prove that if the weaker conjecture holds, then lex plus powers ideals are guaranteed to have largest socles. This suffices to show that the two conjectures are equivalent in dimension ?3, which proves the monomial case of the conjecture for Betti numbers in those degrees. In dimension 2, we prove both conjectures outright.  相似文献

The bigraded Betti numbers β ?i,2j (P) of a simple polytope P are the dimensions of the bigraded components of the Tor groups of the face ring k[P]. The numbers β ?i,2j (P) reflect the combinatorial structure of P, as well as the topological structure of the corresponding moment-angle manifold Z P ; thus, they find numerous applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and toric topology. We calculate certain bigraded Betti numbers of the type β ?i,2(i+1) for associahedra and apply the calculation of bigraded Betti numbers for truncation polytopes to study the topology of their moment-angle manifolds. Presumably, for these two series of simple polytopes, the numbers β ?i,2j (P) attain their minimum and maximum values among all simple polytopes P of fixed dimension with a given number of facets.  相似文献

Let K be a field, S = K[x 1,…, x n ], the polynomial ring over K, and let F be a finitely generated graded free S-module with homogeneous basis. Certain invariants, such as the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the graded Betti numbers of submodules of F, are studied; in particular, the componentwise linear submodules of F are characterized in terms of their graded Betti numbers.  相似文献

Let S=K[x1,…,xn] be a standard graded polynomial ring over a field K. In this paper, we show that the lex-plus-powers ideal has the largest graded Betti numbers among all Borel-plus-powers monomial ideals with the same Hilbert function. In addition in the case of characteristic 0, by using this result, we prove the lex-plus-powers conjecture for graded ideals containing , where p is a prime number.  相似文献

The possible extremal Betti numbers of graded ideals in the polynomial ring K[x1,…,xn] in n variables with coefficients in a field K are studied, completing our results in [7]. In case char(K) = 0 we determine, given any integers r < n, the conditions under which there exists a graded ideal I ? K[x1,…, xn] with extremal Betti numbers $\beta_{k_{i}k_{i}+\ell_{i}}\ {\rm for}\ i=1,\cdots,r$ . We also treat a similar problem for squarefree lexsegment ideals.  相似文献

In this paper we consider integral arithmetically Buchsbaum subschemes of projective space. First we show that arithmetical Buchsbaum varieties of sufficiently large degree have maximal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity if and only if they are divisors on a variety of minimal degree. Second we determine all varieties of minimal degree and their divisor classes which contain an integral arithmetically Buchsbaum subscheme. Third we investigate these varieties. In particular, we compute their Hilbert function, cohomology modules and (often) their graded Betti numbers and obtain an existence result for smooth arithmetically Buchsbaum varieties.

In [7] Passi proved that for a finite p-group, p ≠ 2, one has G4 = D4. We generalize this to say that Gn = Dn as long as n?p + 1. We also generalize a theorem of Quillen [8], using entirely different methods from his, and give his result as a corollary. In order to do this, we construct natural algorithms (spectral sequences) which compute the graded Lie algebra ?iGi/Gi+1 and the graded algebra ? Ii(G)/Ii+1(G) respectively, for any group G, in terms of a presentation. A natural transformation between these spectral sequences exists, and analysing its properties by some new combinatorial methods yields the results.  相似文献

We show that for all i?0 the i-th mod 2 Betti number of compact nonsingular real algebraic varieties has a unique extension to a virtual Betti numberβi defined for all real algebraic varieties, such that if Y is a closed subvariety of X then βi(X)=βi(X?Y)+βi(Y). We show by example that there is no natural weight filtration on the Z2-cohomology of real algebraic varieties with compact supports such that the virtual Betti numbers are the weighted Euler characteristics. Let R=k[x1,…,xn] be a polynomial ring and let IR be a graded ideal. In [T. Römer, Betti numbers and shifts in minimal graded free resolutions, arXiv: AC/070119], Römer asked whether under the Cohen–Macaulay assumption the ith Betti number βi(R/I) can be bounded above by a function of the maximal shifts in the minimal graded free R-resolution of R/I as well as bounded below by a function of the minimal shifts. The goal of this paper is to establish such bounds for graded Cohen–Macaulay algebras k[x1,…,xn]/I when I is a standard determinantal ideal of arbitrary codimension. We also discuss other examples as well as when these bounds are sharp.  相似文献

In [J. Herzog, H. Srinivasan, Bounds for multiplicities, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 350 (1998) 2879-2902], Herzog and Srinivasan study the relationship between the graded Betti numbers of a homogeneous ideal I in a polynomial ring R and the degree of I. For certain classes of ideals, they prove a bound on the degree in terms of the largest and smallest Betti numbers, generalizing results of Huneke and Miller in [C. Huneke, M. Miller, A note on the multiplicity of Cohen-Macaulay algebras with pure resolutions, Canad. J. Math. 37 (1985) 1149-1162]. The bound is conjectured to hold in general; we study this using linkage. If R/I is Cohen-Macaulay, we may reduce to the case where I defines a zero-dimensional subscheme Y. If Y is residual to a zero-scheme Z of a certain type (low degree or points in special position), then we show that the conjecture is true for IY.  相似文献

Macaulay??s Theorem (Macaulay in Proc. Lond Math Soc 26:531?C555, 1927) characterizes the Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. We characterize the Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a Veronese ring R (the coordinate ring of a Veronese embedding of P r-1). We also prove that the Hilbert scheme, which parametrizes all graded ideals in R with a fixed Hilbert function, is connected; this is an analogue of Hartshorne??s Theorem (Hartshorne in Math. IHES 29:5?C48, 1966) that Hilbert schemes over a polynomial ring are connected. Furthermore, we prove that each lex ideal in R has the greatest Betti numbers among all graded ideals with the same Hilbert function.  相似文献

There are two seemingly unrelated ideals associated with a simplicial complex Δ: one is the Stanley–Reisner ideal I Δ , the monomial ideal generated by minimal non-faces of Δ, well-known in combinatorial commutative algebra; the other is the toric ideal I M(Δ) of the facet subring of Δ, whose generators give a Markov basis for the hierarchical model defined by Δ, playing a prominent role in algebraic statistics. In this note we show that the complexity of the generators of I M(Δ) is determined by the Betti numbers of I Δ . The unexpected connection between the syzygies of the Stanley–Reisner ideal and degrees of minimal generators of the toric ideal provide a framework for further exploration of the connection between the model and its many relatives in algebra and combinatorics.  相似文献

The vanishing ideal I of a subspace arrangement V1V2∪?∪VmV is an intersection I1I2∩?∩Im of linear ideals. We give a formula for the Hilbert polynomial of I if the subspaces meet transversally. We also give a formula for the Hilbert series of the product ideal J=I1I2?Im without any assumptions about the subspace arrangement. It turns out that the Hilbert series of J is a combinatorial invariant of the subspace arrangement: it only depends on the intersection lattice and the dimension function. The graded Betti numbers of J are determined by the Hilbert series, so they are combinatorial invariants as well. We will also apply our results to generalized principal component analysis (GPCA), a tool that is useful for computer vision and image processing.  相似文献

We give a formula to compute all the top degree graded Betti numbers of the path ideal of a cycle. Also we will find a criterion to determine when Betti numbers of this ideal are nonzero and give a formula to compute its projective dimension and regularity.  相似文献
