Constructing infra-nilmanifolds admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism

In this paper we establish an algebraic characterization of those infra-nilmanifolds modeled on a free c-step nilpotent Lie group and with an abelian holonomy group admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism. We also develop a new method for constructing examples of infra-nilmanifolds having an Anosov diffeomorphism.     

Anosov diffeomorphisms on infra-nilmanifolds associated to graphs

Anosov diffeomorphisms on closed Riemannian manifolds are a type of dynamical systems exhibiting uniform hyperbolic behavior. Therefore, their properties are intensively studied, including which spaces allow such a diffeomorphism. It is conjectured that any closed manifold admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism is homeomorphic to an infra-nilmanifold, that is, a compact quotient of a 1-connected nilpotent Lie group by a discrete group of isometries. This conjecture motivates the problem of describing which infra-nilmanifolds admit an Anosov diffeomorphism. So far, most research was focused on the restricted class of nilmanifolds, which are quotients of 1-connected nilpotent Lie groups by uniform lattices. For example, Dani and Mainkar studied this question for the nilmanifolds associated to graphs, which form the natural generalization of nilmanifolds modeled on free nilpotent Lie groups. This paper further generalizes their work to the full class of infra-nilmanifolds associated to graphs, leading to a necessary and sufficient condition depending only on the induced action of the holonomy group on the defining graph. As an application, we construct families of infra-nilmanifolds with cyclic holonomy groups admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism, starting from faithful actions of the holonomy group on simple graphs.     

New partially hyperbolic dynamical systems I

We propose a new method for constructing partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on closed manifolds. As a demonstration of the method we show that there are simply connected closed manifolds that support partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. Laying aside many surgery constructions of 3-dimensional Anosov flows, these are the first new examples of manifolds which admit partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in the past forty years.     

On Anosov automorphisms of nilmanifolds

The only known examples of Anosov diffeomorphisms are hyperbolic automorphisms of infranilmanifolds, and the existence of such automorphisms is a really strong condition on the rational nilpotent Lie algebra determined by the lattice, so called an Anosov Lie algebra. We prove that n⊕?⊕n (s times, s≥2) has an Anosov rational form for any graded real nilpotent Lie algebra n having a rational form. We also obtain some obstructions for the types of nilpotent Lie algebras allowed, and use the fact that the eigenvalues of the automorphism are algebraic integers (even units) to show that the types (5,3) and (3,3,2) are not possible for Anosov Lie algebras.     

On Algebraic Anosov Diffeomorphisms on Nilmanifolds

This article is devoted to the algebraic approaches to Anosov diffeomorphisms. All examples of Anosov diffeomorphisms known so far are connected directly or indirectly with compact nilmanifolds. We consider some new necessary conditions for existence of these diffeomorphisms on nilmanifolds. We demonstrated the absence of Anosov diffeomorphisms on some classes of nilmanifolds. We also prove some results on Lie groups and lattices in them.     

Anosov Diffeomorphisms on Nilmanifolds of Dimension at Most Six

A complete classification of nilmanifolds of dimension smaller than or equal to six supporting Anosov diffeomorphisms is presented. This is obtained by solving the equivalent problem of determining the torsion-free nilpotent groups of rank at most six which admit hyperbolic automorphisms.     

Transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on 3-manifolds

The known examples of transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on 3-manifolds belong to 3 basic classes: perturbations of skew products over an Anosov map of T², perturbations of the time one map of a transitive Anosov flow, and certain derived from Anosov diffeomorphisms of the torus T³. In this work we characterize the two first types by a local hypothesis associated to one closed periodic curve.     

Towards a Lie theory of locally convex groups

In this survey, we report on the state of the art of some of the fundamental problems in the Lie theory of Lie groups modeled on locally convex spaces, such as integrability of Lie algebras, integrability of Lie subalgebras to Lie subgroups, and integrability of Lie algebra extensions to Lie group extensions. We further describe how regularity or local exponentiality of a Lie group can be used to obtain quite satisfactory answers to some of the fundamental problems. These results are illustrated by specialization to some specific classes of Lie groups, such as direct limit groups, linear Lie groups, groups of smooth maps and groups of diffeomorphisms.     

On closed manifolds admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism but no expanding map

A few years ago, the first example of a closed manifold admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism but no expanding map was given. Unfortunately, this example is not explicit and is high-dimensional, although its exact dimension is unknown due to the type of construction. In this paper, we present a family of concrete 12-dimensional nilmanifolds with an Anosov diffeomorphism but no expanding map, where a nilmanifold is defined as the quotient of a 1-connected nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. We show that this family has the smallest possible dimension in the class of infra-nilmanifolds, which is conjectured to be the only type of manifolds admitting Anosov diffeomorphisms up to homeomorphism. The proof shows how to construct positive gradings from the eigenvalues of the Anosov diffeomorphism under some additional assumptions related to the rank, using the action of the Galois group on these algebraic units.

COMPLETE LIE ALGEBRAS WITH l-STEP NILPOTENT RADICALS

The authors first give a necessary and sufficient condition for some solvable Lie algebras with l-step nilpotent radicals to be complete, and then construct a new class of infinite dimensional complete Lie algebras by using the modules of simple Lie algebras. The quotient algebras of this new constructed Lie algebras are non-solvable complete Lie algebras with l-step nilpotent radicals.     

Lie isomorphisms of reflexive algebras

A Lie isomorphism ? between algebras is called trivial if ?=ψ+τ, where ψ is an (algebraic) isomorphism or a negative of an (algebraic) anti-isomorphism, and τ is a linear map with image in the center vanishing on each commutator. In this paper, we investigate the conditions for the triviality of Lie isomorphisms from reflexive algebras with completely distributive and commutative lattices (CDCSL). In particular, we prove that a Lie isomorphism between irreducible CDCSL algebras is trivial if and only if it preserves I-idempotent operators (the sum of an idempotent and a scalar multiple of the identity) in both directions. We also prove the triviality of each Lie isomorphism from a CDCSL algebra onto a CSL algebra which has a comparable invariant projection with rank and corank not one. Some examples of Lie isomorphisms are presented to show the sharpness of the conditions.

A special class of nilmanifolds admitting an Anosov diffeomorphism

A nilmanifold admits an Anosov diffeomorphism if and only if its fundamental group (which is finitely generated, torsion-free and nilpotent) supports an automorphism having no eigenvalues of absolute value one. Here we concentrate on nilpotency class 2 and fundamental groups whose commutator subgroup is of maximal torsion-free rank. We prove that the corresponding nilmanifold admits an Anosov diffeomorphism if and only if the torsion-free rank of the abelianization of its fundamental group is greater than or equal to 3.

     

Aspherical Products Which do not Support Anosov Diffeomorphisms

We show that the product of infranilmanifolds with certain aspherical closed manifolds do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. As a special case, we obtain that products of a nilmanifold and negatively curved manifolds of dimension at least 3 do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms.     

Dynamical coherence of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of tori isotopic to Anosov

We show that partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of \(d\) -dimensional tori isotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism, where the isotopy is contained in the set of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, are dynamically coherent. Moreover, we show a global stability result, i.e. every partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism as above is leaf-conjugate to the linear one. As a consequence, we obtain intrinsic ergodicity and measure equivalence for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center direction that are isotopic to Anosov diffeomorphisms through such a path.

c-Graded filiform Lie algebras

In this paper we generalize naturally graded filiform Lie algebras as well as filiform Lie algebras admitting a connected gradation of maximal length, by introducing the concept of c-graded complex filiform Lie algebras. We deal with the particular case of 3-graded filiform Lie algebras and we obtain their classification in arbitrary dimension. We finally show a link among derived algebras, graded filiform and rigid solvable Lie algebras.
