The fate of actinyl species in the environment is closely linked to oxidation state, since the reduction of An(VI) to An(IV) greatly decreases their mobility due to the precipitation of the relatively insoluble An(IV) species. Here we study the mechanism of the reduction of [AnO(2)](2+) (An = U, Np, Pu) both in aqueous solution and by Fe(II) containing proteins and mineral surfaces, using density functional theory calculations. We find a disproportionation mechanism involving a An(V)-An(V) cation-cation complex, and we have investigated how these complexes are formed in the different environments. We find that the behaviour of U and Pu complexes are similar, but the reduction of Np(V) to Np(IV) would seems to be more difficult, in line with the experimental finding that Np(V) is generally more stable than U(V) or Pu(V). Although the models we have used are somewhat idealised, our calculations suggest that there are strong similarities between the biotic and abiotic reduction pathways.  相似文献

The following monopositive actinyl ions were produced by electrospray ionization of aqueous solutions of An(VI)O(2)(ClO(4))(2) (An = U, Np, Pu): U(V)O(2)(+), Np(V)O(2)(+), Pu(V)O(2)(+), U(VI)O(2)(OH)(+), and Pu(VI)O(2)(OH)(+); abundances of the actinyl ions reflect the relative stabilities of the An(VI) and An(V) oxidation states. Gas-phase reactions with water in an ion trap revealed that water addition terminates at AnO(2)(+)·(H(2)O)(4) (An = U, Np, Pu) and AnO(2)(OH)(+)·(H(2)O)(3) (An = U, Pu), each with four equatorial ligands. These terminal hydrates evidently correspond to the maximum inner-sphere water coordination in the gas phase, as substantiated by density functional theory (DFT) computations of the hydrate structures and energetics. Measured hydration rates for the AnO(2)(OH)(+) were substantially faster than for the AnO(2)(+), reflecting additional vibrational degrees of freedom in the hydroxide ions for stabilization of hot adducts. Dioxygen addition resulted in UO(2)(+)(O(2))(H(2)O)(n) (n = 2, 3), whereas O(2) addition was not observed for NpO(2)(+) or PuO(2)(+) hydrates. DFT suggests that two-electron three-centered bonds form between UO(2)(+) and O(2), but not between NpO(2)(+) and O(2). As formation of the UO(2)(+)-O(2) bonds formally corresponds to the oxidation of U(V) to U(VI), the absence of this bonding with NpO(2)(+) can be considered a manifestation of the lower relative stability of Np(VI).  相似文献

Small alkanes (methane, ethane, propane, n-butane) and alkenes (ethene, propene, 1-butene) were used to probe the gas-phase reactivity of doubly charged actinide cations, An(2+) (An = Th, Pa, U, Np, Pu, Am, Cm), by means of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Different combinations of doubly and singly charged ions were observed as reaction products, comprising species formed via metal-ion induced eliminations of small molecules, simple adducts and ions resulting from electron, hydride or methide transfer channels. Th(2+), Pa(2+), U(2+) and Np(2+) preferentially yielded doubly charged products of hydrocarbon activation, while Pu(2+), Am(2+) and Cm(2+) reacted mainly through transfer channels. Cm(2+) was also capable of forming doubly charged products with some of the hydrocarbons whereas Pu(2+) and Am(2+) were not, these latter two ions conversely being the only for which adduct formation was observed. The product distributions and the reaction efficiencies are discussed in relation to the electronic configurations of the metal ions, the energetics of the reactions and similar studies previously performed with doubly charged lanthanide and transition metal cations. The conditions for hydrocarbon activation to occur as related to the accessibility of electronic configurations with one or two 5f and/or 6d unpaired electrons are examined and the possible chemical activity of the 5f electrons in these early actinide ions, particularly Pa(2+), is considered.  相似文献

Electrochemical and complexation properties of neptunium (Np) are investigated in aqueous perchlorate and nitrate solutions by means of cyclic voltammetry, bulk electrolysis, UV-visible absorption, and Np L(III)-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The redox reactions of Np(III)/Np(IV) and Np(V)/Np(VI) couples are reversible or quasi-reversible, while the electrochemical reaction between Np(III/IV) and Np(V/VI) is irreversible because they undergo structural rearrangement from spherical coordinating ions (Np(3+) and Np(4+)) to transdioxoneptunyl ions (NpO2(n+), n = 1 for Np(V) and 2 for Np(VI)). The redox reaction of the Np(V)/Np(VI) couple involves no structural rearrangement on their equatorial planes in acidic perchlorate and nitrate solutions. A detailed analysis on extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra suggests that Np(IV) forms a decaaquo complex of [Np(H2O)10](4+) in 1.0 M HClO4, while Np(V) and Np(VI) exist dominantly as pentaaquoneptunyl complexes, [NpO2(H2O)5](n+) (n = 1 for Np(V) and 2 for Np(VI)). A systematic change is observed on the Fourier transforms of the EXAFS spectra for all of the Np oxidation states as the nitrate concentration is increased in the sample, revealing that the hydrate water molecules are replaced by bidentate-coordinating nitrate ions on the primary coordination sphere of Np.  相似文献

A freshly prepared solution of Pu(VI) in 2 M NaOH was oxidized to Pu(VII), via ozonolysis, while simultaneously collecting X-ray absorption spectra. Analyses of the XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) data, acquired throughout the in situ experiments, show a dioxo coordination environment for Pu(VI), PuO(2)(2+), typical for it and the hexavalent actinyl species of U and Np, and its evolution into a tetraoxo-coordination environment for Pu(VII), PuO(4)(-), like that known for Np(VII). The EXAFS data provide average Pu-O distances of 1.79(1) and 1.88(1) ?, respectively. The second coordination shells, also fit as O atoms, provide Pu-O distances of 2.29-2.32 ? that are independent of the Pu oxidation state. The coordination numbers for the distant O atoms in sums with those for the nearest O atoms are consistent with 6-O environments for both Pu(VI) and Pu(VII) ions in accordance with their previously proposed speciation as [Pu(VI)O(2)(OH)(4)](2-) and [Pu(VII)O(4)(OH)(2)](3-), respectively. This solution speciation accounts precisely for the Pu(VI) and Pu(VII) coordination environments reported in various solid state structures. The Pu(VII) tetraoxo-dihydroxo anion was found to have a half-life of 3.7 h. Its instability is attributed to spontaneous reduction to Pu(VI) and not to a measurable extent of disproportionation. We found no direct evidence for Pu(VIII) in the X-ray data and, furthermore, the stoichiometry of the oxidation of Cr(III) by Pu is consistent with that expected for a valence-pure Pu(VII) preparation by ozonation and, in turn, stoichiometrically equivalent to the established Np(VII)/Cr(III) redox reaction.  相似文献

The rates and mechanisms of the electron self-exchange between Np(V) and Np(VI) in solution have been studied with quantum chemical methods and compared with previous results for the U(V)-U(VI) pair. Both outer-sphere and inner-sphere mechanisms have been investigated, the former for the aqua ions, the latter for binuclear complexes containing hydroxide, fluoride, and carbonate as bridging ligand. Solvent effects were calculated using the Marcus equation for the outer-sphere reactions and using a nonequilibrium PCM method for the inner-sphere reactions. The nonequilibrium PCM appeared to overestimate the solvent effect for the outer-sphere reactions. The calculated rate constant for the self-exchange reaction NpO2(+)(aq) + NpO2(2+)(aq) right harpoon over left harpoon NpO2(2+)(aq) + NpO2(+)(aq), at 25 degrees C is k = 67 M(-1) s(-1), in fair agreement with the observed rates 0.0063-15 M(-1) s(-1). The differences between the Np(V)-Np(VI) and the U(V)-U(VI) pairs are minor.  相似文献

The reactions of 237NpO2 with excess iodate under acidic hydrothermal conditions result in the isolation of the neptunium(IV), neptunium(V), and neptunium(VI) iodates, Np(IO3)4, Np(IO3)4.nH2O.nHIO3, NpO2(IO3), NpO2(IO3)2(H2O), and NpO2(IO3)2.H2O, depending on both the pH and the amount of water present in the reactions. Reactions with less water and lower pH favor reduced products. Although the initial redox processes involved in the reactions between 237NpO2 or 242PuO2 and iodate are similar, the low solubility of Pu(IO3)4 dominates product formation in plutonium iodate reactions to a much greater extent than does Np(IO3)4 in the neptunium iodate system. UO2 reacts with iodate under these conditions to yield uranium(VI) iodates solely. The isotypic structures of the actinide(IV) iodates, An(IO3)4 (An=Np, Pu), are reported and consist of one-dimensional chains of dodecahedral An(IV) cations bridged by iodate anions. The structure of Np(IO3)4.nH2O.nHIO3 is constructed from NpO9 tricapped-trigonal prisms that are bridged by iodate into a polar three-dimensional framework structure. Second-harmonic-generation measurements on a polycrystalline sample of the Th analogue of Np(IO3)4.nH2O.nHIO3 reveal a response of approximately 12x that of alpha-SiO2. Single-crystal magnetic susceptibility measurements of Np(IO3)4 show magnetically isolated Np(IV) ions.  相似文献

U(VI), Np(VI), and Pu(VI) borates with the formula AnO(2)[B(8)O(11)(OH)(4)] (An = U, Np, Pu) have been prepared via the reactions of U(VI) nitrate, Np(VI) perchlorate, or Pu(IV) or Pu(VI) nitrate with molten boric acid. These compounds are all isotypic and consist of a linear actinyl(VI) cation, AnO(2)(2+), surrounded by BO(3) triangles and BO(4) tetrahedra to create an AnO(8) hexagonal bipyramidal environment. The actinyl bond lengths are consistent with actinide contraction across this series. The borate anions bridge between actinyl units to create sheets. Additional BO(3) triangles and BO(4) tetrahedra extend from the polyborate layers and connect these sheets together to form a three-dimensional chiral framework structure. UV-vis-NIR absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy confirms the hexavalent oxidation state in all three compounds. Bond-valence parameters are developed for Np(VI).  相似文献

Reduction kinetics of Pu(IV) by N,N-dimethylhydrazine (NNDMH) were studied by spectrophotometry, and the reduction rate equation in 3M (mol/dm3) nitric acid was obtained. The reduction properties of NNDMH for U(VI), Np(VI), and Pu(IV) was studied in the mixture solution of trin-butylphosphate diluted to 30 vol.% by n-dodecane (30% TBP) and 3M nitric acid. It was confirmed that NNDMH selectively reduce Np(VI) to Np(V) without affecting the valences of U(VI) and Pu(IV) in a few minutes. Numerical simulation indicated that 99.9% of Np was separated from U and Pu applying NNDMH for a mixer-settler.  相似文献

The effect of iron powder (Fe0) on the reduction of Pu(VI),Np(V), and U(VI) was investigated in dilute NaCl and synthetic brines. Thetotal concentrations and oxidation states of the actinides in these solutionswere monitored as functions of pC H +, Eh, and time using techniques includingVis/Near IR absorption spectrophotometry, solvent extraction, activity counting, and inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Whenconcentrations were too low and the oxidation states could not be directlydetermined by spectrophotometry or solvent extraction, comparing the measuredconcentrations with the solubility of reference systems helped to define thefinal oxidation states. In general, the reduction was more rapid, and couldproceed further, in the dilute NaCl solution than in the brine solutions. The experimental observations can be summarized as follows: (1) in the diluteNaCl solutions (pC H + 7 to 12), all three actinides, Pu(VI), Np(V) and U(VI),were reduced to lower oxidation states (most likely the tetravalent state)within a few days to a few months in the presence of Fe0; (2) insynthetic brines containing Fe0 (pC H + 8 to 13), the reductionof Pu(VI) was much slower than in the dilute NaCl solution. The dominant oxidationstate of Pu in the brine solution was Pu(V), the concentration of which wascontrolled by the electrochemical potential and could probably be representedby a heterogeneous redox reaction PuO2 . xH2O(s) PuO2 + +e ; (3) in synthetic brines containing Fe0 (pC H + 8 to 13), Np(V) was probably reduced to Np(IV) and precipitatedfrom the solution; (4) in synthetic brines containing Fe0 (pC H+ 8 to 13), no significant reduction of U(VI) was observed within 55 days.  相似文献

We report the first transmission of solvent-coordinated dipositive plutonyl ion, Pu(VI)O(2)(2+), from solution to the gas phase by electrospray ionization (ESI) of plutonyl solutions in water/acetone and water/acetonitrile. ESI of plutonyl and uranyl solutions produced the isolable gas-phase complexes, [An(VI)O(2)(CH(3)COCH(3))(4,5,6)](2+), [An(VI)O(2)(CH(3)COCH(3))(3)(H(2)O)](2+), and [An(VI)O(2)(CH(3)CN)(4)](2+); additional complex compositions were observed for uranyl. In accord with relative actinyl stabilities, U(VI)O(2)(2+) > Pu(VI)O(2)(2+) > Np(VI)O(2)(2+), the yields of plutonyl complexes were about an order of magnitude less than those of uranyl, and dipositive neptunyl complexes were not observed. Collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the dipositive coordination complexes in a quadrupole ion trap produced doubly- and singly-charged fragment ions; the fragmentation products reveal differences in underlying chemistries of plutonyl and uranyl, including the lower stability of Pu(VI) as compared with U(VI). Particularly notable was the distinctive CID fragment ion, [Pu(IV)(OH)(3)](+) from [Pu(VI)O(2)(CH(3)COCH(3))(6)](2+), where the plutonyl structure has been disrupted and the tetravalent plutonium hydroxide produced; this process was not observed for uranyl.  相似文献

The interaction of Np(VI), Pu(VI), Np(V), Np(IV), Pu(IV), Nd(III), and Am(III) with Al(III) in solutions at pH 0–4 was studied by the spectrophotometric method. It was shown that, in the range of pH 3–4, the hydrolyzed forms of neptunyl and plutonyl react with the hydrolyzed forms of aluminium. In the case of Pu(VI), the mixed hydroxoaqua complexes (H2O)3PuO2(-OH)2Al(OH)(H2O)3 2+ or (H2O)4PuO2OAl(OH)(H2O)4 2+ are formed at the first stage of hydrolysis. Np(VI) also forms similar hydroxoaqua complexes with Al(III). The formation of the mixed hydroxoaqua complexes was also observed when Np(IV) or Pu(IV) was simultaneously hydrolyzed with Al(III) at pH 1.5–2.5. The Np(IV) complex with Al(III) has, most likely, the formula (H2O) n (OH)Np(-OH)2Al(OH)(H2O)3 3+. At pH from 2 to 4.1 (when aluminium hydroxide precipitates), the Np(V) or Nd(III) ions exist in solutions with or without Al(III) in similar forms. When pH is increased to 5–5.5, these ions are almost not captured by the aluminium hydroxide precipitate.  相似文献

N,Ndiethylhydroxylamine (DEHAN) can rapidly reduce Pu(IV) and Np(VI) extractable with trinbutyl phosphate (TBP) to Pu(III) and Np(V) unextractable with TBP in nitric acid solution. In order to apply DEHAN in the purification cycle step of U (noted as contactor 2D) of the secondcycle of the Purex Process to separate Np and Pu from U, the reduction of Np(VI) and the stability of Np(V) with DEHAN and the singlestage reduction extraction and backextraction of Np(VI) have been studied according to the experimental conditions of contactor 2D. The results show that more than 99% of Np(VI) can entirely be reduced to Np(V) with DEHAN within a few minutes either in aqueous or in organic phase containing uranium and without containing uranium, and more than 99% of Np(VI) can be backextracted from the organic to the aqueous phase with DEHAN as a reductant. More than 99% of Np(V) exists in nitric acid solution at least for 8 hours in presence of 0.01 mol/l DEHAN. These results are of benefit to the cascade extractionseparation of U/Np in contactor 2D in order to decontaminate Np from U.  相似文献

The heterobimetallic actinide compound UO(2)Ce(H(2)O)[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](2)·H(2)O was prepared via the hydrothermal reaction of U(VI) and Ce(IV) in the presence of 1,2-phenylenediphosphonic acid. We demonstrate that this is a kinetic product that is not stable with respect to decomposition to the monometallic compounds. Similar reactions have been explored with U(VI) and Ce(III), resulting in the oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV) and the formation of the Ce(IV) phosphonate, Ce[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3)H(2))][C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3))]·2H(2)O, UO(2)Ce(H(2)O)[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](2)·H(2)O, and UO(2)[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](H(2)O)·H(2)O. In comparison, the reaction of U(VI) with Np(VI) only yields Np[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](2)·2H(2)O and aqueous U(VI), whereas the reaction of U(VI) with Pu(VI) yields the disordered U(VI)/Pu(VI) compound, (U(0.9)Pu(0.1))O(2)[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](H(2)O)·H(2)O, and the Pu(IV) phosphonate, Pu[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3)H(2))][C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3))]·2H(2)O. The reactions of Ce(IV) with Np(VI) yield disordered heterobimetallic phosphonates with both M[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3)H(2))][C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3))]·2H(2)O (M = Ce, Np) and M[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](2)·2H(2)O (M = Ce, Np) structures, as well as the Ce(IV) phosphonate Ce[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3)H(2))][C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3))]·2H(2)O. Ce(IV) reacts with Pu(IV) to yield the Pu(VI) compound, PuO(2)[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](H(2)O)·3H(2)O, and a disordered heterobimetallic Pu(IV)/Ce(IV) compound with the M[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3)H(2))][C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3))]·2H(2)O (M = Ce, Pu) structure. Mixtures of Np(VI) and Pu(VI) yield disordered heterobimetallic Np(IV)/Pu(IV) phosphonates with both the An[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3)H(2))][C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(PO(3))]·2H(2)O (M = Np, Pu) and An[C(6)H(4)(PO(3)H)(2)](2)·2H(2)O (M = Np, Pu) formulas.  相似文献

The speciation of redox sensitive trivalent actinides Pu(III), Np(III), and U(III) has been studied in aqueous solution. The redox preparation, stabilization, and speciation of these trivalent actinides in aqueous systems are discussed here. The reductants investigated were rongalite, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and acetohydroxamic acid and the An(III) species have been characterized by UV–Vis and XANES spectroscopy. The results show that the effectiveness of stabilization decreases generally in the order Pu(III) > Np(III) > U(III) and that the effectiveness of each reducing agent depends on the experimental conditions. More than 80 % of Pu(III) aquo species have been stabilized up to pH 5.5, whereas the Np(III) aquo ion could be stabilized in a pH range 0–2.5, and U(III) aquo ion is sufficiently stable at pH 1.0 and below over time periods suitable for experiments. However, this study gives a basis for the characterisation of the trivalent lighter actinides involved in complexation, sorption, and solid formation reactions in the future.  相似文献

Reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions of the redox couples An(VI)/An(V), An(V)/An(IV), and An(IV)/An(III), where An is an element in the family of early actinides (U, Np, and Pu), as well as Am(VI)/Am(V) and Am(V)/Am(III), are modeled by combining density functional theory with a generalized Anderson impurity model that accounts for the strong correlations between the 5f electrons. Diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model yields improved estimates for the redox potentials and the propensity of the actinide complexes to disproportionate.  相似文献

A predictive reactivity of Cp2An(IV)Me2 (with An = uranium [U], neptunium [Np] and plutonium [Pu]) with pyridine N-oxide has been studied at the theoretical level. The predictive reaction, which consists in the formation of a formaldehyde complex, begins after the initial formation of a cyclometalated complex produced by a C-H activation of the pyridine N-oxide. A difference of reactivity between U/Pu and Np has been observed and has been attributed to the presence of a more covalent bond between Np and the carbene group in the transition state of formation of a transient carbene intermediate.  相似文献

In this paper, to separation Cs(I) effectively from HLW, a kind of chromatographic rein was synthesized through immobiling calix[4]-bis-crown-6 on the macroporous polystyrene -divinylbenzene polymeric material. The synthesized chromatographic resin showed high ability to absorb Cs(I). While the radioactive elements Pu(III), Np(V), U(VI), Th(IV), as well as all of the fission and non-fission products showed almost no sorption towards chromatographic rein. The separation of Cs from HLW can be realized through adjusting the valence of Np and Pu or adding H2C2O4. All the results showed that the application of the new chromatographic rein to the analysis of HLW is possible.  相似文献

Spectrophotometric investigations have been carried out on the disproportionation of Np(V) to form Np(IV) and Np(VI) in 1.1 mol⋅L−1 solutions of tributyl phosphate (TBP) and in N,N-dihexyl octanamide (DHOA) in n-dodecane medium. The Np(V) was found to coordinate with Np(IV) in 1.1 mol⋅L−1 TBP solution in n-dodecane to form a mixed valence “cation–cation” complex by bonding through an axial oxo group on Np(V). By contrast, this interaction was less prominent in the case of 1.1 mol⋅L−1 DHOA solutions. The effect of 1-octanol, added as phase modifier, on the disproportionation behavior of Np(V) was also investigated. An attempt was made to calculate the disproportionation/reduction rate constants for Np(V) under the conditions of these studies. Absorbance measurements on the Np stripped from organic phases revealed the occurrence of Np(V) in the aqueous phase.  相似文献
