The (2 × 4)-reconstructed InP(1 0 0) surfaces have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and synchrotron-radiation core-level photoelectron spectroscopy. STM observations show that the α2 model describes the atomic structure of the InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4) surface in a limited range of the surface-preparation conditions, as predicted theoretically but not previously observed. STM results also support the accuracy of the previously found mixed-dimer structure for the InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4) surface under less P-rich conditions. A study of P 2p core-level photoelectron spectra, measured with different surface-sensitivity conditions, demonstrates that P 2p photoemission from the mixed-dimer InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4) surface consists of at least two surface-core-level-shift (SCLS) components which have kinetic energies approximately 0.4 eV higher and 0.3 eV lower than the bulk emission. On the basis of the surface-sensitivity difference between these SCLSs, they are related to the third-layer and top-layer P sites in the mixed-dimer structure, respectively.  相似文献

The atomic positions of the oxygen-induced c(2 × 2)-O, (3 × 1)-O and (4 × 1)-O surface structures on Nb(1 0 0) are determined by first-principles electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory comparing experimentally observed scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. STM images of these surfaces are calculated on the basis of the theory of Tersoff and Hamann. The theoretical and experimental STM images of the oxygen-chemisorbed c(2 × 2)-O structural model agree well. However, only the oxide-covered (3 × 1)-O and (4 × 1)-O structural models with two layers of NbO and contraction of the unit length along longitudinal 〈1 0 0〉 direction by 10% result in the theoretical STM images that agree with the experimental ones.  相似文献

The Mo(1 1 2) and Mo(1 1 1) surfaces have been studied by STM and DFT/GGA modeling. Due to high quality and cleanness of the surfaces, for the first time good STM images of large fragments of the Mo(1 1 2) and Mo(1 1 1) have been obtained. Lack of atomic resolution in the rows of the Mo(1 1 2) surface is attributed to flatness of distribution of density of the electronic states along the rows. This suggestion is illustrated by comparison of STM images for Mo(1 1 1) and Mo(1 1 2) and model calculations of STM pictures for these surfaces.  相似文献

The electronic structure of GaAs(1 1 0) surface is analyzed using Density Functional Theory (DFT-GGA) in atomic orbital basis (LCAO). The surface orbitals and the corresponding local density of electronic states (LDOS) are calculated for purposes of interpreting STM images. We show how local atomic orbitals of surface atoms are related to tunneling channels for electrons in STM imaging. A destructive interference between orbitals of two neighbouring atoms increases the contrast between the two atoms, and this is reflected in directionality of STM patterns of GaAs(1 1 0) surfaces. We also discuss how the basic formalism of Tersoff-Hamann approach to STM simulation can be reformulated to reveal the role of phase difference between tunneling channels.  相似文献

A soft X-ray appearance potential spectroscopy (SXAPS) apparatus with high sensitivity was built to measure non-derivative spectra. SXAPS spectra (non-derivative) of Ti 2p and O 1s for TiO2(1 1 0)-1 × 2 and (0 0 1)-1 × 1 surfaces have been measured using low incident currents (about 10 μA/cm2) and a photon counting mode. Density of empty states on Ti and O sites are deduced by self-deconvoluting the spectra. The self-deconvoluted SXAPS spectra are qualitatively similar to those measured by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ti 2p3/2 spectrum shows two strong peaks which correspond to t2g and eg states. For the O 1s spectrum two strong peaks near the threshold are also found which can be ascribed to O 2pπ and O 2pσ states. These results suggest that the spectra almost obey the dipole selection rule, so-called the “approximate dipole selection rule”. The SXAPS spectra of Ti 2p and O 1s for the (1 1 0) and (0 0 1) surfaces resemble qualitatively, which is consistent with the XAS results. The spectra measured on the (1 1 0)-1 × 2 surface at an incident angle of 45° off normal to the surface and on the (1 1 0) surface sputtered by Ar ions indicate that SXAPS is very sensitive to the surface electronic states.  相似文献

We study the structure and the electronic properties of the (1 1 0) surfaces of magnetite Fe3O4 thin films by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS). The STM images show a surface reconstruction consisting of ridges along the direction. Based on atomically resolved STM images we present a model for the observed ridge reconstruction of the surface, in agreement with a bulk-truncated layer containing both octahedral and tetrahedral iron ions. The metallic and semiconductor-like shapes of the measured current-voltage (I-V) curves indicate a non-uniform segregation of magnesium through the film. The weak contrast between the tops and valleys of ridges measured in the STS current maps is attributed to tetrahedral and octahedral coordination at the tops and the valleys, respectively. This attribution is in agreement with the proposed structure model. We observe a contrast enhancement at a tip change accompanied by a corrugation enhancement. This tip change is induced by picking up material from the sample, resulting in a magnetic tip. Thus, the contrast enhancement is attributed to detection of spin polarized current.  相似文献

Gold fingers, one atomic layer (0.25 nm) high, 4-5 nm wide, and several hundred nm long are formed on the (1 1 1) surface of gold at room temperature by a combination of atomic manipulation and surface self-organisation. Each finger has two parallel edges (type A and type B, respectively) running along its length. The type A step is found to have higher step energy and become nanofaceted when disturbed by either thermal energy or the electric field under the STM tip, leading to the transformation of fingers to “nano-knives”. Our findings reveal the important role of step energy in the process of nanostructure fabrication on surfaces. The gold fingers also provide an ideal system for the investigation of meta-stable nanostructures.  相似文献

Several surface analysis techniques were combined to study the initial stages of oxidation of Cu(1 1 1) surfaces exposed to O2 at low pressure (<5 × 10−6 mbar) and room temperature. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results show that the reactivity is governed by the restructuring of the Cu(1 1 1) surface. On the terraces, oxygen dissociative adsorption leads to the formation of isolated O adatoms and clusters weakly bound to the surface. The O adatoms are located in the fcc threefold hollow sites of the unrestructured terraces. Friedel oscillations with an amplitude lower than 5 pm have been measured around the adatoms. At step edges, surface restructuring is initiated and leads to the nucleation and growth of a two-dimensional disordered layer of oxide precursor. The electronic structure of this oxide layer is characterised by a band gap measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy to be ∼1.5 eV wide. The growth of the oxide islands progresses by consumption of the upper metal terraces to form triangular indents. The extraction of the Cu atoms at this interface generates a preferential orientation of the interface along the close-packed directions of the metal. A second growth front corresponds to the step edges of the oxide islands and progresses above the lower metal terraces. This is where the excess Cu atoms extracted at the first growth front are incorporated. STM shows that the growing disordered oxide layer consists of units of hexagonal structure with a first nearest neighbour distance characteristic of a relaxed Cu-Cu distance (∼0.3 nm), consistent with local Cu2O(1 1 1)-like elements. Exposure at 300 °C is necessary to form an ordered two-dimensional layer of oxide precursor. It forms the so-called “29” superstructure assigned to a periodic distorted Cu2O(1 1 1)-like structure.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to elucidate the electronic structures of the TiO-like film on TiC(1 0 0) and the ZrO-like film on ZrC(1 0 0), which are assumed to be monolayers of suboxide films with (1 × 1) periodicity with respect to the substrate (1 0 0) surfaces. It was revealed that the electronic structures of both films were characterized by the existence of a band around 6 eV and a band around the Fermi level. The former and latter bands were mostly composed of O 2p and metal d orbitals, respectively, indicating the substantial ionic nature of the film. The calculated DOS well reproduced the previously obtained photoelectron spectra. From the inspection of the optimized structures, it was found that the both suboxide films have rippled structures; the metal and oxygen atoms are displaced vertically downward and upward, respectively, maintaining the (1 × 1) structures.  相似文献

The temperature-induced structural transition of the Si(1 1 3) surface is investigated by ab initio calculations. In this study, it is found that the room-temperature phase and the high-temperature phase have the 3 × 2 interstitial structure and the 3 × 1 interstitial structure, respectively. The existence of the 3 × 2 and 3 × 1 interstitial structures is supported by the analysis of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images and the calculation of surface core level shifts using final state pseudopotential theory. The theoretical STM images of interstitial structures are in good agreement with the STM images suggested by experiments. The analysis of STM images provides an insight into the characteristics of domain boundaries observed frequently in experiments. It is also found that the domain boundary can be formed by local 3 × 1 interstitial structures on the 3 × 2 interstitial surface. The theoretical analysis of the surface core level shifts reveals that the surface core levels in experiment originate from the interstitial structures. The lowest values in the surface core level shifts are found to be associated with the 2p core level shifts of the interstitial atoms.  相似文献

The bismuth-stabilized (2 × 4)-reconstructed InP(1 0 0) surface [Bi/InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4)] has been studied by synchrotron-radiation core-level photoelectron spectroscopy. The spectra are compared with previous core-level data obtained on a clean InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4) surface. The findings support that the P 2p surface-core-level shift (SCLS) of the clean InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4), which has higher kinetic energy than the bulk emission, arises from the third-layer P atoms and that the second P 2p SCLS, which has lower kinetic energy than the bulk, arises from the top-layer P atoms. Similar In 4d SCLSs are found on the clean and Bi-stabilized InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4) surfaces, indicating that these shifts contain contributions of the In atoms that lie in the second and/or fourth layers. In addition to this, the results improve our understanding of the atomic structure of the Bi/InP(1 0 0)(2 × 4) surface and lead to refined surface models which include Bi-Bi and Bi-P dimers.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations incorporating an analytic embedded atom potential have been used to investigate the atomic structure and surface order of the Al vicinal surfaces for the temperature up to 900 K. The relaxation, mean square vibrational amplitude, and structure factor as a function of temperature, and of the terrace width for the p(1 0 0) × (1 1 1) surfaces (2 ≤ p ≤ 10) are discussed. The obtained structure factor indicates that the anharmonic effect reduces with increasing terrace widths. The decrease of surface energy with increasing terrace width also supports this conclusion.  相似文献

By scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) and high-resolution core-level photoemission using synchrotron radiation, we have investigated the atomic structure and electronic properties of Sb-induced 2 × 1 reconstruction on Ge(1 1 1). Our results support well the zigzag-chain model proposed for this phase in the literature; in particular, the STM images visualize the Sb zigzag (Seiwatz) chain in a real space, and the STS I-V spectrum suggests this surface to be semiconducting, in good agreement with the atomic configuration proposed. However, a closer inspection of the STM results does not support the buckling of Sb chains reported in earlier studies. Moreover, the analysis of the Sb 4d core-level line shape of the (2 × 1) reconstruction shows that the bonding state of the Sb atoms is very similar, suggesting an unbuckled Seiwatz chain. In addition, the Ge 3d core-level emission reveals only one component, giving evidence for the ideal bulk-terminated structure of the Ge substrate.  相似文献

We have studied hydrogen adsorption on the Ge(1 1 1) c(2 × 8) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). We find that atomic hydrogen preferentially adsorbs on rest atom sites. The neighbouring adatoms appear higher in STM images, which clearly indicates a charge transfer from the rest atom states to the adatom states. The surface states near the Fermi-level have been followed by ARPES as function of H exposure. Initially, there is strong emission from the rest atom states but no emission at the Fermi-level which confirms the semiconducting character of the c(2 × 8) surface. With increasing H exposure a structure develops in the close vicinity of the Fermi-level. The energy position clearly indicates a metallic character of the H-adsorbed surface. Since the only change in the STM images is the increased brightness of the adatoms neighbouring a H-terminated rest atom, we identify the emission at the Fermi-level with these adatom states.  相似文献

The nanoscale hexagonal pattern observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for 3-layer and 4-layer Pb islands on Si(1 1 1) is studied theoretically. We found that besides thickness the atomic rearrangement at the Pb/Si interface plays an important role in determining the STM patterns. Electronic structures of the Pb film on Si(1 1 1) obtained from fully relaxed and unrelaxed Pb films are qualitatively different. Simulated STM images for Pb films with different stacking also show that the corrugation patterns are sensitive to the buried Pb-Si interfacial structure.  相似文献

The surface structure of BaO(1 1 1) has been determined using STM and computer modelling. The BaO(1 1 1) surface was prepared in thin film form on Pt(1 1 1) and presents a surface with twice the lattice parameter expected for that of the bulk termination, i.e. a (2 × 2) reconstruction. Computer modelling indicates that the bulk termination is unstable, but that the (2 × 2) reconstructed BaO(1 1 1) surface has a low surface energy and is hence a stable surface reconstruction. The (2 × 2) reconstruction consists of small, three-sided pyramids with (1 0 0) oriented sides and either oxygen or barium ions at the apices. Less regular surface reconstructions containing the same pyramids are almost equally stable, indicating that we may also expect less regular regions to appear with a fairly random distribution of these surface species. The simulations further suggest that a regular (4 × 4) reconstruction built up of bigger pyramids is even more energetically favourable, and some evidence is found for such a structure in the STM.  相似文献

We investigate the quantum mechanical behavior of adsorbed hydrogen (H, D, T) on Cu(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces. We construct potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the motion of the hydrogen H atom on Cu(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces within the framework of density functional theory. The potential energy takes a minimum value on the hollow site of Cu(1 0 0) and on the short bridge site of Cu(1 1 0). Moreover, we calculate the quantum states of hydrogen atom motion on these calculated PESs. The ground state wave function of the hydrogen atom motion is strongly localized around the hollow site on the Cu(1 0 0) surface. On the other hand, the ground state wave function of the hydrogen atom motion on Cu(1 1 0) is distributed from the short bridge site to two neighboring pseudo-threefold sites. We finally show isotope effects on the quantum states of the motion of hydrogen on both surfaces.  相似文献

The (1 1 1)A and (1 1 1)B surfaces of GaAs chemically treated in HCl-isopropanol solution (HCl-iPA) and annealed in vacuum were studied by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). To avoid uncontrolled contamination, chemical treatment and sample transfer into UHV were performed under pure nitrogen atmosphere. The HCl-iPA treatment removes gallium and arsenic oxides, with about 0.5-3 ML of elemental arsenic being left on the surface, depending on the crystallographic orientation. With the increase of the annealing temperature, a sequence of reconstructions were identified by LEED: (1 × 1) and (2 × 2) on the (1 1 1)A surface and (1 × 1), (2 × 2), (1 × 1), (3 × 3), (√19 × √19) on the (1 1 1)B surface. These sequences of reconstructions correspond to the decrease of surface As concentration. The structural properties of chemically prepared GaAs(1 1 1) surfaces were found to be similar to those obtained by decapping of As-capped epitaxial layers.  相似文献

This study investigates ultra-thin potassium chloride (KCl) films on the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surfaces at near room temperature. The atomic structure and growth mode of this ionic solid film on the covalent bonded semiconductor surface is examined by synchrotron radiation core level photoemission, scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations. The Si 2p, K 3p and Cl 2p core level spectra together indicate that adsorbed KCl molecules at submonolayer coverage partially dissociate and that KCl overlayers above one monolayer (ML) have similar features in the valance band density of states as those of the bulk KCl crystal. STM results reveal a novel c(4 × 4) structure at 1 ML coverage. Ab initio calculations show that a model that comprises a periodic pyramidal geometry is consistent with experimental results.  相似文献
