We have studied the electronic band structure of the ideal (0 0 1) surface of AlN, GaN and InN in the zinc-blende phase. We have employed an empirical sp3sd5 Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor interactions including spin-orbit coupling and the surface Green function matching method. We have obtained the different surface states together with their corresponding orbital character and localization in the different layers. A similar physical picture is obtained for the three materials.  相似文献

The energies of the ideal (1 × 1), dimer (2 × 1) and trimer (3 × 1) structures on (0 0 1) surfaces have been calculated by using MEAM for three diamond cubic crystals C, Si and Ge. From energy minimization, the dimer (2 × 1) and trimer (3 × 1) reconstructions can be formed naturally and without any barrier. The dimer corresponding to the lowest energy implies it is the easiest to be formed and the most stable as well. This is consistent with the experimental result and other theoretical prediction. Determined dimer bond length of 2.43 Å for Si drops in the experimental range of 2.20-2.47 Å, and of 2.5 Å for Ge is close to the 2.55 Å measured by X-ray diffraction. The trimer, constructed here firstly, has not been observed in the experimental due to its slightly higher energy than dimer. Its bond lengths have been determined to be 1.96, 2.64 and 2.75 Å for C, Si and Ge, respectively. Further experimental testing is needed.  相似文献

A low energy electron diffraction (LEED) investigation of the structure of the surface of an FeO(0 0 1) thin film grown on Ag(0 0 1) is presented. The results show that this surface has an almost bulk termination structure with a very small rumple on the first layer, which agrees with the structure found in other studies carried out on the (0 0 1) surface of oxides that have rock-salt structure. Evidences that may support a linear behaviour of the topmost layer rumple with the oxide lattice constant are also discussed.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images show that adsorbed formate has a profound affect on the step edges of Cu(1 1 0) surfaces at room temperature. For low exposures, the presence of formate enhances step fluctuations as confirmed by a correlation function analysis. For formate coverages approaching 0.5 monolayers, drastic restructuring of step edges is observed. Quantum chemical calculations help to explain this behavior.  相似文献

Diffusion of Cu atoms on a strained Cu (1 1 1) surface was studied by molecular dynamic simulation using an EAM potential. The anisotropic diffusion behaviour is found when the uniaxial strain is imposed on the surface, which does not exist under the biaxial strain. The migration of the adatom is suppressed along the tensile strain direction. The results suggest that different island morphology can be obtained by controlling anisotropic diffusion of adatoms on the strained surfaces during film growth.  相似文献

Infrared reflection absorption (IRA) spectra measured for dimethyl ether (DME) adsorbed at 80 K on Cu(1 1 1) and Ag(1 1 1) give IR bands belonging only to the A1 and B2 species, indicating that the adsorbate takes on an orientation in which the C2 axis bisecting the COC bond angle tilts away from the surface normal within the plane perpendicular to the substrates. The DFT method was applied to simulate the IRA spectra, indicating that the tilt angles of DME on Cu(1 1 1) and Ag(1 1 1) are about 50° and 55°, respectively, at submonolayer coverages. The results are in contrast to the case of DME on Cu(1 1 0) and Ag(1 1 0), where the C2 axis is perpendicular to the substrates [T. Kiyohara et al., J. Phys. Chem. A 106 (2002) 3469]. Methyl ethyl ether (MEE) adsorbed at 80 K on Cu(1 1 1) gives IRA bands mainly ascribable to the gauche (G) form, whereas the IRA spectra measured for MEE on Ag(1 1 1) are characterized by the trans (T) form. The rotational isomers are identical with those on Cu(1 1 0) and Ag(1 1 0); i.e., MEE on Cu(1 1 0) takes the G form and the adsorbate on Ag(1 1 0) the T form [T. Kiyohara et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 107 (2003) 5008]. The simulation of the IRA spectra indicated that (i) the G form adsorbate on Cu(1 1 1) takes an orientation, in which the axis bisecting the COC bond angle tilts away from the surface normal by ca. 30° within the plane perpendicular to the surface to make the CH3-CH2 bond almost parallel to the surface, and (ii) the T form adsorbate on Ag(1 1 1) takes an orientation, in which the bisecting axis tilts away by ca. 60° from the surface normal within the perpendicular plane. Comparison of these adsorption structures of MEE on the (1 1 1) substrates with those of MEE on Cu(1 1 0) and Ag(1 1 0) indicates that the structures are mainly determined by a coordination interaction of the oxygen atom to the surface metals and an attractive van der Waals interaction between the ethyl group of MEE and the substrate surfaces. The coordination interaction plays an important role on Cu(1 1 1) and Cu(1 1 0), which makes the adsorbate on the Cu substrates to take the orientations with the bisecting axis near parallel to the surface normal and to assume the G form in order to make the ethyl group parallel to the surface, which is favorable for the van der Waals interaction. In the case of MEE on the Ag substrates the attractive van der Waals interaction plays a dominant role, resulting in the T form which is more favorable for the interaction than the G form.  相似文献

The chemistry of a common copper deposition precursor, (hexafluoroacetylacetonate)Cu(vinyltrimethylsilane), (hfac)Cu(VTMS), on a single crystal Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surface is described at the molecular level using a combination of experimental surface analytical techniques under ultra-high vacuum conditions with computational analysis. At a cryogenic temperature of 100 K, (hfac)Cu(VTMS) adsorbs on this surface molecularly, without noticeable decomposition. Upon surface annealing, VTMS is easily released into the gas phase below the room temperature, while the hfac ligand is bound to the surface through the copper atom. When (hfac)Cu(VTMS) is adsorbed at room temperature, VTMS is released into the gas phase immediately, leaving surface adsorbate analogous in structure to the one formed by adsorption at cryogenic temperature and a brief annealing to room temperature. Upon surface annealing, the hfac ligand decomposes and constitutes the main source of impurities in copper deposition process.  相似文献

Recent advances in both the experimental resolution and in the computational capabilities motivate new studies of surface properties. In particular, a detailed comparison between theoretical and experimental data is expected to provide a better insight into surface and image states. In this work we present a joint effort analyzing such features of the Cu(1 1 1) and Cu(0 0 1) surfaces. The experiments are performed by using both linear and non-linear angle-resolved photoemission. From the theoretical point of view, we make use of the Green function embedding technique within density functional theory. We are able to account for the image states by suitably modifying the effective potential in the Kohn-Sham equation and the generalized boundary conditions on the Green function. Comprehensive theoretical and experimental results on the effective mass and the binding energy of the Shockley state and the first image states are reported.  相似文献

We have performed semi-empirical LCAO calculations of the electronic structure of the Cu(1 1 0)-p(2 × 1)O surface. This has been done accounting for the Cu-Cu interactions by means of a recently proposed set of parameters, which give very good results for the bulk as well as for the surfaces of lowest Miller indices. Furthermore, the O-O interactions, which have been neglected in the preceding similar studies, have been taken into account. The resulting surface bands are in very good agreement with the overall set of the available experimental data. Several issues concerning the physical properties of this surface are addressed in the present paper: the changes induced on the clean surface bands by the adsorption and the reconstruction; the arrangement of the Cu and O atoms in the added rows; the position of the py antibonding band of the oxygen. In particular, we have found that the latter has an energy of −0.2 eV at the point. This result confirms an experimental indication in the same direction previously reported by Courths et al. [R. Courths, S. Hüfner, P. Kemkes, G. Wiesen, Surf. Sci. 376 (1997) 43].  相似文献

The adsorption of CN on Cu(1 1 1), Ni(1 1 1) and Ni(1 0 0) has been investigated using density functional theory (DFT). While experimental studies of CN on Cu(1 1 1) show the molecular axis to be essentially parallel to the surface, the normally-preferred DFT approach using the generalised gradient approximation (GGA) yields a lowest energy configuration with the C-N axis perpendicular to the surface, although calculations using the local density approximation (LDA) do indicate that the experimental geometry is energetically favoured. The same conclusions are found for CN on Ni(1 1 1); on both surfaces bonding through the N atom is always unfavourable, in contrast to some earlier published results of ab initio calculations for Ni(1 1 1)/CN and Ni(1 0 0)/CN. The different predictions of the GGA and LDA approaches may lie in subtly different relative energies of the CN 5σ and 1π orbitals, a situation somewhat similar to that for CO adsorbed on Pt(1 1 1) which has proved challenging for DFT calculations. On Ni(1 0 0) GGA calculations favour a lying-down species in a hollow site in a geometry rather similar to that found experimentally and in GGA calculations for CN on Ni(1 1 0).  相似文献

Using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory calculations, we have studied the adsorption of tetracene on the Cu(1 1 0) (2 × 1)O substrate. At monolayer coverage the adsorbed molecules are in the flat-laying geometry with their long axis along the close-packed [0 0 1] direction of the substrate and a long-range ordered structure on the length scale up to 100 nm has been observed. DFT calculation results indicate a stronger interaction between tetracene molecules and Cu(1 1 0) substrate than Cu(1 1 0) (2 × 1)O substrate. The preferential adsorption sites have also been pointed out on both substrates. The observed wavelike structure is explained by the interdigitation of C-H bonds of adjacent molecules.  相似文献

With static relaxation, the surface diffusion activation energies of a single Cu adatom migrated by both atomic exchange and hopping mechanisms and the forces acted on the diffusing adatom from other atoms of Cu (0 0 1) or (1 1 0) surface are calculated by using the MAEAM. When adatom migrated on Cu (0 0 1) or (1 1 0) surface, the increment curves of the system energy by hopping mechanism are symmetrical and the saddle points are in the midpoints of the migration path, but the ones by the exchange mechanism are dissymmetrical and the saddle points are always close to the initial hole positions of the adatom and away from the initial equilibrium positions of the exchanged atom. From minimization of both the diffusion activation energy and the force acted on the diffusing adatom from other atoms, we found that, on Cu (0 0 1) surface the favorable diffusion mechanism is hopping mechanism, however, on Cu (1 1 0) surface, hopping via long bridge is easier than the exchange mechanism but the hopping via short bridge is more difficult than the exchange mechanism.  相似文献

Density functional theory calculations have been performed on the adsorption of H and CH3, and the dissociation of CH4 on Pt(1 0 0) surface. It was found that H was adsorbed on the top and bridge sites, while CH3 was adsorbed only on the top site. The coadsorption of methyl and hydrogen which has also been investigated shows that the interaction between the two adsorbates is stabilising. In addition, two distinct pathways were explored, differing by the initial adsorbed state of CH4. They converge readily to the same transition state corresponding to an activation energy value of 0.53 eV. These results compare favourably with existing data in the literature for Pt(1 1 1) and Pt(1 1 0).  相似文献

Methyl mercaptoacetate (MA) on Cu(1 1 1) surface was investigated using synchrotron radiation-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. MA adsorbs on the surface via thiolate formation and weak interaction of the carbonyl group with the surface. Two different adsorption states previously reported for methanethiolate and ethanethiolate were confirmed, besides atomic sulfur. NEXAFS measurements support gauche-type conformation of MA whose skeleton lies on the surface.  相似文献

Reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to characterise the interaction of standard and fully deuterated glycine with Cu(1 0 0) and Cu(1 1 1). RAIRS shows clearly that the surface interaction leads to formation of the adsorbed deprotonated glycinate (NH2CH2COO-) species, with some evidence for changes in orientation with coverage previously seen on Cu(1 1 0). Qualitative low energy electron diffraction observations were also conducted to characterise the long-range ordering, although effects of electron-beam-induced radiation damage limited the information obtained. Nevertheless, the results do suggest some subtle isotopic-mass-related structural variations. The results are discussed in the context of previously published scanning tunnelling microscopy and photoelectron diffraction measurements.  相似文献

The energies of the ideal, missing row (MR) and missing column (MC) (1 1 0) surfaces have been calculated by using modified embedded atom method (MEAM) for seven face centered cubic (FCC) transition metals Au, Pt, Ag, Pd, Rh, Cu and Ni. The results, that the MC reconstruction can not be formed for all metals, while the MR reconstruction can be formed naturally for Au and Pt, inductively for Ag, Pd, Rh and Cu and difficultly for Ni, are better than EAM calculated results in comparing with experimental results. In addition to the surface energy explanation, the results are also related to the surface topography and valence electron structure.  相似文献

The thermal chemistry of perfluoroethyl iodide (C2F5I) adsorbed on Cu(1 1 1) has been investigated by temperature-programmed reaction/desorption (TPR/D), reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). I 4d and F 1s XPS spectra show that dissociative adsorption of C2F5I to form the surface-bound perfluroethyl (Cu-C2F5) moieties occurs at very low temperature (T < 90 K), while the C-F bond cleavage in adsorbed perfluroethyl (Cu-C2F5) begins at ca. 300 K. XPS and TPR/D studies further reveal that the reactions of βCF3αCF2(ad) on Cu(1 1 1) are strongly dependent on the surface coverage. At high coverages (?0.16 L exposure), the adsorbed perfluroethyl (Cu-C2F5) evolves, via α-F elimination, into the surface-bound tetrafluoroethylidene moieties (CuCF-CF3) followed by a dimerization step to form octafluoro-2-butene (CF3CFCFCF3) at 315 K as gas product. The surface-bound (Cu-C2F5) decomposes preferentially, at low coverages (?0.04 L), via consecutive α-F abstraction to afford intermediate, trifluoroethylidyne (CuCCF3), resulting in the final coupling reaction to yield hexafluoro-2-butyne (CF3CCCF3) at 425 K. However, at middle coverages (ca. 0.08-0.16 L exposure), the adsorbed perfluroethyl (Cu-C2F5) first experiences an α-F elimination and then prefers to loss the second F from β position to yield the intermediate of Cu-CF2-CFCu (μ-η,η-perfluorovinyl), which may further evolve into hexafluorocyclobutene (CF2CFCFCF2) at 350 K through cyclodimerization reaction. Our results have also shown that the surface reactions to yield the products, CF3CFCFCF3 and CF3CCCF3, obey first-order kinetics, whereas the formation of CF2CFCFCF2 follows second-order kinetics.  相似文献

The interplay between chemisorbed oxygen and deposited Ag on the Cu(1 1 0) surface has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM). The Cu-CuO stripe phase formed on the clean Cu(1 1 0) surface upon oxygen chemisorption at 660 K is partly dissolved by Ag deposition at 300 K. Upon annealing, however, a phase separation is observed, where the Cu-O compounds agglomerate into large CuO islands and the Ag is located in between. Also a strong preference for the Ag to attach to step bunches is observed. Especially on the fully (2×1)O reconstructed Cu(1 1 0) surface, all the deposited Ag is found at the step bunches giving rise to a contrast in PEEM.  相似文献

The chemisorption of benzoate on a Cu(1 1 0) crystal at room temperature was studied using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. STM images, obtained at 5 K for low benzoate coverage, show isolated surface species that consist of a single Cu adatom stabilizing two benzoate molecules in a flat orientation. These species are discussed in relation to other known metal-organic surface compounds. At higher coverage the overlayer, called the α-phase, was also observed at 5 K and found to contain features attributable to two Cu adatoms associated with two pairs of non-equivalent benzoate species. The observed topographic features are used to suggest refinements of the structural model of the ordered α-phase overlayer.  相似文献

We present a reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS) study of para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) thin film growth on Cu(1 1 0) and Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O substrates. The RDS spectra show pronounced anisotropies for p-6P films formed on both substrates at room temperature, demonstrating that the molecules are uniaxially aligned within the films. Based on the RD spectra and the evolution of the optical transitions with p-6P coverage the growth mode on both substrates could be identified. From the dominating RDS feature, assigned to the lowest energy HOMO-LUMO transition, the orientation of the molecular chain can be determined. On Cu(1 1 0), the p-6P molecular chains align in the direction, i.e., along the Cu atomic rows, whereas on the Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O surface, the molecules are oriented in the orthogonal [0 0 1] direction, i.e., along the “added” Cu-O rows of the Cu(1 1 0)-(2 × 1)O surface. The energetic position and line shape of the main RDS feature differs for the two substrates and varies with p-6P coverage. This fine structure is discussed in terms of different molecular conformations, adlayer structure and vibronic replicas.  相似文献
