The enhanced ionization processes taking place inside the hollow cathode region (HCR) of a transient hollow cathode discharge (THCD) are essential events which lead to final electrical breakdown. This ionization growth is permanently assisted by a virtual anode moving in the anode-cathode gap (A-K gap), which extends the anode potential to within the hollow cathode region. In the paper, the ionization growth inside the HCR under the enhanced field due to the close proximity of the anode potential has been studied using a statistical technique in a range of pressures, with three different cathode apertures. Statistical time distributions of an extensive experimental data set are analyzed to understand the mechanisms involved in the final stages, just before electric breakdown  相似文献

A detailed experimental study of space charge formation and ionization growth in transient hollow cathode discharges (THCD) is presented. The experiment was performed with an applied step voltage up to 30 kV, with rise time less than 50 ns. The discharge was operated in different gases, at pressures in the range 50-750 mTorr, with cathode apertures ranging from 1 to 5 mm diameter and 5 to 20 mm long, with 10 cm electrode separation. Spatial charge formation, both in the hollow cathode region (HCR) and inter electrode space, has been studied with a capacitive probe array. Properties of high energy electron beams have been measured with a beam-target scintillator-photomultiplier arrangement. Detailed correlations of the electron beam evolution with the charge probe signals inside and outside the HCR clearly demonstrate the role of the electron beam in the initial formation and late evolution of a virtual anode and, in turn, the field enhanced ionization when the anode potential is brought close to the HCR. These results clearly identify the different regimes in which the Hollow Cathode plays a significant role in ionization growth in the inter electrode space and in the processes which eventually lead to electric breakdown  相似文献

Two different regimes of electron beams have been reported in the pulsed hollow cathode discharge-a low-current, high-energy beam, and a relatively high-current beam of low energy. The high-energy beam is related to the hollow cathode geometry and is found to be present even in the absence of subsequent gas breakdown, while the low-energy beam is always associated with voltage breakdown. Detailed measurements of the spatial and temporal distribution of the electron beam transported beyond a semitransparent anode associated with gas breakdown are reported. In particular, a high-energy component is observed after electrical breakdown. Low-energy electron beams are observed to be transported beyond the anode throughout the main discharge period  相似文献

A general form of the non-local equation for an ionization source in glow discharge and hollow cathode 3D-simulation is formulated. It is a fundamental equation in hollow cathode theory, which allows formulation of a complete set of field equations for a self-consistent problem in a stationary glow discharge and hollow cathode. It enables us to describe the region of negative glow and the hollow cathode effect and compare calculation results of electrical dependencies (pressure-voltage) with experimental data, – under conditions of gradual appearance of the hollow cathode effect.  相似文献

The discharge characteristics and the parameters of the cathode plasma in a two-stage ion source with a grid plasma cathode and a magnetic trap in the anode region are investigated. It is shown that an increase in the gas pressure and the accompanying increase in the reverse ion current in the bipolar diode between the cathode and anode plasmas lead to an increase in the cathode plasma potential and a transition of the cathode into the regime of electron emission from the open plasma boundary. The dependence of the ion current extracted from the anode plasma on the area of the exit aperture of the hollow cathode and the mesh size of the grid plasma cathode is explained. The conditions at which the ion emission current from the anode plasma is maximum are determined. The potential difference at the bipolar diode is measured by using the probe method. It is shown that, when the gas pressures reaches a critical value determined by the mesh size of the grid plasma cathode, the discharge passes into a contracted operating mode, in which the ion current extracted from the anode plasma decreases severalfold.  相似文献

The possibility of producing homogeneous plasma in a low-pressure discharge with the use of a hollow anode or hollow cathode is analyzed. It is shown that, in contrast to the high-pressure discharge, where uniform ionization is needed to produce homogeneous plasma, in the low-pressure discharge, nearly uniform radial distribution of the plasma parameters can be achieved under nonuniform ionization conditions by increasing the ionization probability at the system periphery and reducing it near the system axis. It is shown that the magnetic field can facilitate generation of the homogeneous plasma instead of interfering with it.  相似文献

利用流体模型模拟研究了氦气空心阴极放电的时空动力学过程,计算得到了不同放电时刻电子和亚稳态氦原子密度、电势、电场、基态电离速率和分步电离速率等的时空分布特性。特别是讨论了亚稳态原子和分步电离对于放电的影响。结果表明,随着电流的增长,放电处于五个不同的放电模式:第一阶段电流上升非常缓慢,为汤生放电模式,带电粒子密度、亚稳态原子密度和径向电场均很弱;第二阶段电流迅速上升,放电模式由汤生放电向空心阴极放电过渡,带电粒子密度、亚稳态原子密度和径向电场迅速增强;第三阶段达到准稳态阶段,放电电流增长速度变缓,形成了明显的阴极鞘层结构;第四阶段为空心阴极效应形成阶段,向稳态阶段过渡;第五阶段为稳态放电阶段。研究结果同时表明,亚稳态氦原子和分步电离在放电的初始阶段对于放电的发展作用较弱,在前三阶段中,电子的产生以基态电离为主。随着放电的发展,由亚稳态原子引起的分步电离对新的电子产生的作用逐渐接近并超过基态电离,对总电离的贡献率越来越高。  相似文献

The breakdown behaviour of a hollow cathode glow discharge is investigated in a cylindrical, hollow cathode structure having an internal diameter of 2 cm. The anode is a plane electrode across one end of the cathode cylinder. Pressures of argon between 20 and 107 Pa were used (0.15 to 0.80 torr), and applied voltages between 800 and 2500 V. It is shown that the statistical time lag for breakdown is in the range of ~ 1 ms and depends on the applied voltage, the gas pressure, and the history of operation of the discharge tube. The rise time of the discharge current ranges from about 10 ns at high pressure and voltage to about 200 ns at the lowest pressure and voltage used. The discharge propagates along the cathode axis at a speed of about 108 cm s?1. From the obtained data, a qualitative model of the first stage of the discharge is derived. Based on this model, a simple calculation gives values of Townsend modified first coefficient η at high values of E/N, 104 < E/N < 8 · 104 Td which fit well at the lowest E/N, where they approach the data of PENNING and KRUITHOF in argon. In contrast to the extremely short initial current-rise times, in the submicrosecond range, the discharge currents reach steady-state values only after about 300 μs.  相似文献

The X-ray emission from a source based on a small vacuum discharge is studied. Two different X-ray pulses whose intensities vary with the anode-cathode distance are identified. Time integrated pinhole images show that the whole anode and the teflon insulator emit X-rays. Some of the X-ray emission is found to originate also in the vicinity of the tungsten anode. The temporal behavior of the X-ray varies with respect to the distance between the anode and the cathode. Three different cathode geometries are tested: hollow cathode, hollow conical cathode, and massive or needle cathode. The spatial distribution of the X-ray sources is obtained by means of a sensitive imaging device. Some X-ray spots that appear in the discharge gap near the anode tip are similar to hot spots found in more powerful discharges  相似文献

采用粒子模拟和蒙特卡罗相结合的方法,应用静电求解模型,对赝火花开关初始放电过程进行了模拟。赝火花开关初始放电过程主要由汤森放电过程、等离子体形成、空心阴极效应和场致发射引发主放电组成;等离子体形成和空心阴极效应对赝火花开关的发展导通具有至关重要的作用。改变赝火花开关工作参数,如气压、电极孔径、阳极电压和阴极腔中初始粒子密度,研究其对赝火花开关电子峰值电流形成时间的影响。结果表明:随着气压、电极孔径、阳极电压和初始粒子密度的增大,赝火花开关电子峰值电流形成时间减小。  相似文献

The effect of the design features of the gas-discharge tube on the processes proceeding in the discharge circuit of a metal-vapor laser has been investigated. The position of electrodes in the gas-discharge tube has been found to significantly affect the processes at work in the discharge circuit and the energy characteristics of the laser. For instance, gas-discharge tubes with electrodes placed in the hot region of the discharge channel are typified by high metastable-population rates at the leading edge of the excitation pulse, whereas with electrodes positioned in cold buffer regions, the leading edge of the voltage pulse across the resistive component of the tube impedance is seen to peak. Conditions for running-wave generation in the active media of lasers on self-terminated transitions of metal atoms and the running-wave use efficiency for laser pumping are discussed, considering a strontium-vapor laser as an illustration. It is shown that the running wave is generated as the result of the breakdown in the anode end of the gas-discharge tube and is maintained by the energy stored in the capacitive component of the impedance of the gas-discharge tube. The lasing pulse duration under running-wave excitation corresponds to the time it takes an ionization wave to propagate from the anode to the cathode of the gas-discharge tube, with pumping efficiency being ~6–8% for a strontium-vapor laser. The average lasing power varies within 10–15% depending on whether the totally reflecting cavity mirror is placed near the anode or the cathode of the tube. The photolitography method was used for producing interdigitated configurations for cathode and anode electrodes of a field ionization gas sensor in which Mn helical nano-flowers with 3-fold symmetry were deposited using oblique angle deposition together with rotation of the substrate about its surface normal, with each rotation divided into six sections. These sections were alternately rotated at high and low speeds. Three different distances were chosen in the design between anode and cathode electrodes, namely 40, 100 and 200 μm. Physical structure and morphology of electrodes were studied by field emission scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope analyses.The breakdown voltage of the system was studied for nitrogen, oxygen, argon, air and carbon mono-oxide gases. Investigations with these gases at different distances between anode and cathode and different gas pressures confirmed Paschen's Law. Results showed that at low pressures, decreasing the gap between electrodes increases the breakdown voltage. With fewer gas molecules between the electrodes the number of interactions between particles is reduced and higher energies are required for ionization of gas molecules. At high pressures, the breakdown voltage is decreased because of an increased number of molecular interactions. The sensor demonstrated good selectivity between the different gases and selectivity was enhanced with increasing gas pressure. A direct relationship was found at low pressures (e.g., 0.1 mbar) between the breakdown voltage and the gas ionization energy while at high pressures (e.g., 1000 mbar) this relationship was reversed.  相似文献

The discharge characteristics of hollow cathode discharge in argon in a cylindrical cavity are investigated experi- mentally. The voltage-current (V - I) characteristics and the light emission are measured. It is found that the discharge plasma is localized inside the hollow cavity, with an extensive Faraday dark space between the cathode and the anode. The discharge develops from predischarge to abnormal glow discharge, the hollow cathode effect (HCE) and a hybrid mode as the discharge current increases. The onset of the HCE is found for the first time by the transition from abnormal glow discharge together with a significant decrease in the slope of the V - I curve which shows a positive differential resistivity. The voltage increases proportionally with the current when the HCE is reached.  相似文献

The Townsend discharge mechanism has been explored in a planar microelectronic gas discharge device(MGDD) with different applied voltages U and interelectrode distance d under various pressures in air. The anode and the cathode of the MGDD are formed by a transparent SnO2 covered glass and a GaAs semiconductor, respectively. In the experiments, the discharge is found to be unstable just below the breakdown voltage Ub, whereas the discharge passes through a homogeneous stable Townsend mode beyond the breakdown voltage. The measurements are made by an electrical circuit and a CCD camera by recording the currents and light emission(LE) intensities. The intensity profiles, which are converted from the 3D light emission images along the semiconductor diameter, have been analysed for different system parameters. Different instantaneous conductivity σtregimes are found below and beyond the Townsend region. These regimes govern the current and spatio-temporal LE stabilities in the plasma system. It has been proven that the stable LE region increases up to 550 Torr as a function of pressure for small d. If the active area of the semiconductor becomes larger and the interlectrode distance d becomes smaller, the stable LE region stays nearly constant with pressure.  相似文献

由于大气压均匀放电等离子体在工业领域具有广泛的应用前景,为了获得大尺寸的大气压均匀等离子体,采用氩气作为工作气体,在大气压空气环境中利用同轴介质阻挡放电点燃了针-板电极间的大气隙(气隙宽度达到5 cm)直流均匀放电。研究发现,同轴介质阻挡放电能够有效降低针-板电极间的击穿电压。该均匀放电由等离子体柱、等离子体羽、阴极暗区和阴极辉区组成。其中等离子体柱和阴极辉区都是连续放电。而等离子体羽不同位置的放电是不同时的。事实上,等离子体羽放电是由从阴极向着等离子体柱移动的发光光层(即等离子体子弹)叠加而成。利用电学方法测量了放电的伏安特性曲线,发现其与低气压正常辉光放电类似,均具有负斜率。采集了放电的发射光谱,发现存在N2第二正带系、氩原子和氧原子谱线。通过Boltzmann plot方法对放电等离子体电子激发温度进行了空间分辨测量,发现等离子体柱的电子激发温度比等离子体羽的电子激发温度低。通过分析放电机制,对以上现象进行了定性解释。这些研究结果对大气压均匀放电等离子体源的研制和工业应用具有重要意义。  相似文献

In this paper, the features of a low-pressure discharge in a hollow cathode are considered. It has been shown that a free mode can be realized with a double electric layer at the cathode and high density of the current of high-velocity electrons in the discharge bulk, considerably exceeding the current density at the cathode. In this case, the rate of ionization by high-velocity electrons considerably exceeds the rate of ionization by plasma electrons.  相似文献

The electrical breakdown of a gas-filled diode with a highly nonuniform electric field is studied in the case when a 25-kV voltage pulse generates runaway electron beams with time-separated maxima of different duration behind anode foil. Experimental data are analyzed and numerically simulated using the PIC/MC code OOPIC-Pro. It is shown that, in terms of the model used, both beams arise at the cathode but their formation mechanisms differ. The first runaway electron beam no longer than 500 ps is attributed to the ionization mechanism; the second one, which may last several nanoseconds, is due to emission.  相似文献

The low alloy steels were nitrided in the plasma atmosphere generated by using hollow cathode discharge. For comparison, specimens of 40 Cr steel were in two different potential states. One kind is isolated from cathode and anode between them the discharge was created. The other kind is placed on the plate which is connected to the cathode. The nitriding was carried out at different temperatures. The surface morphology, phase of compound layers and microhardness profiles were analyzed. The optical microscopy observation and X-ray diffraction showed that the compound layers were formed in all experiments. The results of the nitriding treatment are weakly dependent on the potentials applied on the specimens.  相似文献
