The experimentally observed filling factors of the fractional quantum Hall effect can be described in terms of the composite fermion wave function of the Jastrow-Slater form [0pt] fully projected into the lowest Landau level. The Slater determinant of the above composite fermion wave function represents the filled Landau levels of composite fermions evaluated at the corresponding reduced magnetic field. For a system of fermions studied in the thermodynamic limit, we prove that in the even-denominator-filled state limit (when the number of filled Landau levels of composite fermions becomes infinite), the above composite fermion wave function exactly transforms into the Rezayi-Read Fermi-sea-like wave function [0pt] constructed by attaching 2m flux quanta to the Slater determinant of two-dimensional free fermions at the density corresponding to that filling. We study the composite fermion wave function and its evolution into the Fermi-sea-like wave function for a range of filling factors very close to the even-denominator-filled state. The electron mass operator in a strong magnetic field is calculated. The contribution of higher Landau levels of virtual electrons, along with the ground Landau level, is shown to be essential in the leading log approximation. The effect of the electron dynamical mass generation by a magnetic field is investigated. In a model with N charged fermions, it is shown that some critical number N(cr) exists for any value of the electromagnetic coupling constant alpha, such that the fermion dynamical mass is generated with a doublet splitting for NN(cr), thus leaving the chiral symmetry unbroken.  相似文献

We construct the grand partition function of the system of massive Dirac fermions in a uniform magnetic field from Landau levels, through which all thermodynamic quantities can be obtained.Making use of the Abel-Plana formula, these thermodynamic quantities can be expanded as power series with respect to the dimensionless variable b=2eB/T~2.The zero-field magnetic susceptibility is expanded at zero mass, and the leading order term is logarithmic. We also calculate scalar, vector current, axial vector current and energy-momentum tensor of the system through ensemble average approach.Mass correction to chiral separation effect is discussed. For massless chiral fermions, our results recover the chiral magnetic effect for right-and left-handed fermions,as well as chiral separation effect.  相似文献

The gauge independence of the dynamical fermion mass generated through chiral symmetry breaking in QED in a strong, constant external magnetic field is critically examined. We present a (first, to the best of our knowledge) consistent truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equations in the lowest Landau level approximation. We demonstrate that the dynamical fermion mass, obtained as the solution of the truncated Schwinger-Dyson equations evaluated on the fermion mass shell, is manifestly gauge independent.  相似文献

We show that the chiral-symmetry-broken phase of massless QED in the presence of a magnetic field exhibits strong paraelectricity. A large anisotropic electric susceptibility develops in the infrared region, where most of the fermions are confined to their lowest Landau level, and dynamical mass and anomalous magnetic moment are generated via the magnetic catalysis mechanism. The nonperturbative nature of this effect is reflected in the dependence of the electric susceptibility on the fine-structure constant. The strong paraelectricity is linked to the electric dipole moments of the particle-antiparticle pairs that form the chiral condensate. The significant electric susceptibility can be used as a probe to detect the realization of the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in physical systems.  相似文献

In this work we investigate the issue of fermion localization and resonances in (4,1)-deformed branes constructed with one scalar field coupled with gravity. Such models provide us branes with internal structures that turns the gravitational interaction more effective for fermions aside the brane, increasing their lifetime. The coupling between the scalar field and spinors is a necessary condition for fermions to be localized on such branes. After performing a chiral decomposition of the five-dimensional spinor we found resonances with both chiralities. The correspondence between the spectra for left and right chirality is guaranteed and Dirac fermions are realized on the brane.  相似文献

We have measured the low-temperature transport properties of a high-mobility front-gated GaAs/Al Ga As heterostructure. By changing the applied gate voltage, we can vary the amount of disorder within the system. At a Landau level filling factor , where the system can be described by the composite fermion picture, we observe a crossover from metallic to insulating behaviour as the disorder is increased, in agreement with theory. We also report experimental evidence of geometric effect for composite fermions induced by an effective magnetic field.  相似文献

Excitation modes in the range 2/5>or=nu>or=1/3 of the fractional quantum Hall regime are observed by resonant inelastic light scattering. Spectra of spin-reversed excitations suggest a structure of lowest spin-split Landau levels of composite fermions that is similar to that of electrons. Spin-flip energies determined from spectra reveal significant composite fermion interactions. The filling factor dependence of mode energies displays an abrupt change in the middle of the range when there is partial population of a composite fermion level.  相似文献

We are demonstrating that the Luttinger model with short range interaction can be treated as a type of Fermi liquid. In line with the main dogma of Landau’s theory one can define a fermion excitation renormalized by interaction and show that in terms of these fermions any excited state of the system is described by free particles. The fermions are a mixture of renormalized right and left electrons. The electric charge and chirality of the Landau quasi-particle is discussed.  相似文献

We consider fermionic dense matter under a magnetic field, where fermions couple minimally to gauge fields, and calculate anomalous currents at one loop. We find anomalous currents are spontaneously generated along the magnetic field but fermions only in the lowest Landau level contribute to anomalous currents. We then show that there are no more corrections to the anomalous currents from two or higher loops.  相似文献

The multitude of excitations of the fractional quantum Hall state are very accurately understood, microscopically, as excitations of composite fermions across their Landau-like Λ levels. In particular, the dispersion of the composite fermion exciton, which is the lowest energy spin conserving neutral excitation, displays filling-factor-specific minima called “magnetoroton” minima. Simon and Halperin employed the Chern-Simons field theory of composite fermions [Phys. Rev. B 48, 17368 (1993)] to predict the magnetoroton minima positions. Recently, Golkar et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 216403 (2016)] have modeled the neutral excitations as deformations of the composite fermion Fermi sea, which results in a prediction for the positions of the magnetoroton minima. Using methods of the microscopic composite fermion theory we calculate the positions of the roton minima for filling factors up to 5/11 along the sequence s/ (2s + 1) and find them to be in reasonably good agreement with both the Chern-Simons field theory of composite fermions and Golkar et al.’s theory. We also find that the positions of the roton minima are insensitive to the microscopic interaction in agreement with Golkar et al.’s theory. As a byproduct of our calculations, we obtain the charge and neutral gaps for the fully spin polarized states along the sequence s/ (2s ± 1) in the lowest Landau level and the n = 1 Landau level of graphene.  相似文献

In the variational framework, we study the electronic energy spectrum of massless Dirac fermions of graphene subjected to one-dimensional oscillating magnetic and electrostatic fields centered around a constant uniform static magnetic field. We analyze the influence of the lateral periodic modulations in one direction, created by these oscillating electric and magnetic fields, on Dirac like Landau levels depending on amplitudes and periods of the field modulations. We compare our theoretical results with those found within the framework of non-degenerate perturbation theory. We found that the technique presented here yields energies lower than that obtained by the perturbation calculation, and thus gives more stable solutions for the electronic spectrum of massless Dirac fermion subjected to a magnetic field perpendicular to graphene layer under the influence of additional periodic potentials.  相似文献

We review and extend the composite fermion theory for semiconductor quantum dots in high magnetic fields. The mean-field model of composite fermions is unsatisfactory for the qualitative physics at high angular momenta. Extensive numerical calculations demonstrate that the microscopic CF theory, which incorporates interactions between composite fermions, provides an excellent qualitative and quantitative account of the quantum dot ground state down to the largest angular momenta studied, and allows systematic improvements by inclusion of mixing between composite fermion Landau levels (called Λ levels).  相似文献

With the aid of imaginary time temperature field theory and fermion mass spectrum derived from Ward-Takahashi identities with composite fields, the vertex correction among fermions and σ meson is calculated beyond the leading order in 1/N expansion, and the change of vertex function with temperature and decoupling transition are discussed in (2+1) dimensional chiral Gross-Neveu model. It turns out that the critical temperature of decoupling transitionarises with increasing fermion mass and π meson mass at zero temperature;the vertex correction resulting from thermal fluctuation will affect the fermion dynamical mass and cannot be ignored at finite temperature.  相似文献

We extend previous work on the properties of the Dirac lagrangian on two-dimensional random lattices to the case where interaction terms are included. Although for free fermions the chiral symmetry of the doubles is spontaneously broken by their interaction with the lattice and they decouple from long-distance physics, our results in this paper show that all is undone by quantum corrections in an interacting field theory and that the end result is very similar to what is found with Wilson fermions. Two field-theoretical models with interacting fermions are studied by perturbation expansion in the field theory coupling constant. These are a model with one fermion and one boson species interacting via a scalar Yukawa coupling and the massive Thirring model. It is shown that on the random lattice ultraviolet finite diagrams and finite parts of ultraviolet divergent diagrams have the correct continuum limit. Ultraviolet divergent parts can be removed by the same renormalisation procedure as in the continuum, but do not exhibit the same dependence on the lagrangian mass. In the case of the massive Thirring model this causes a fermion mass correction of order the cut-off scale, which breaks the chiral symmetry of the remaining light fermion; there is consequently a fine-tuning problem. In the context of the same model we discuss the effect of the Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneous breakdown of the chiral symmetry of the doubles on two-dimensional models with vector couplings.  相似文献

We describe a new type of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) that should occur in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) with an asymmetry in the dispersion relations of the left- and right-handed (LH and RH) chiral Weyl fermions. In such materials, time-dependent pumping of electrons from a non-chiral external source can generate a non-vanishing chiral chemical potential. This is due to the different capacities of the LH and RH chiral Weyl cones arising from the difference in the density of states in the LH and RH cones. The chiral chemical potential then generates, via the chiral anomaly, a current along the direction of an applied magnetic field even in the absence of an external electric field. The source of chirality imbalance in this new setup is thus due to the band structure of the system and the presence of (non-chiral) electron source, and not due to the parallel electric and magnetic fields. We illustrate the effect by an argument based on the effective field theory, and by the chiral kinetic theory calculation for a rotationally invariant WSM with different Fermi velocities in the left and right chiral Weyl cones; we also consider the case of a WSM with Weyl nodes at different energies. We argue that this effect is generically present in WSMs with different dispersion relations for LH and RH chiral Weyl cones, such as SrSi2 recently predicted as a WSM with broken inversion and mirror symmetries, as long as the chiral relaxation time is much longer than the transport scattering time.  相似文献

The chiral magnetic effect is the appearance of a quark electric current along a magnetic-field direction in topologically nontrivial gauge fields. There is evidence that this effect is observed in collisions between heavy ions at the RHIC collider. The features of the chiral magnetic effect in SU(2) lattice gluodynamics at zero temperature have been investigated. It has been found that the electric current increases in the magnetic-field direction owing to quantum fluctuations of gluon fields. Fluctuations of the local charge density and chirality also increase with the magnetic field strength, which is a signature of the chiral magnetic effect.  相似文献

Two possible ways of extending Symanzik's improvement programme to lattice fermions namely improvement to first and second order in the lattice sppacing a are discussed. The corresponding lattice actions for fermions are constructed and tree-level improvement conditions are derived by considering “classical” improvement. The concept of “on-shell” improvement is generalized to the lattice fermions studied here and the free parameters are determined for O(a) and O(a2) on-shell improved actions to all orders of perturbation theory. No evidence is found that the complicated structure of the O(a2) on-shell improved action, especially thearising fermion contact terms can be removed beyond tree level. The effect of terms in the action that explicitly break chiral symmetry and therefore remove the phenomenon of species doubling are investigated by considering the energy-momentum relations of the arising tree-level improved actions. Our main result is that the O(a) improved action is a slightly modified Wilson fermion action can still be written with only nearest-neighbour fermion interactions.  相似文献

New characteristics of the Kondo effect, arising from spin chirality induced by the Berry phase in the equilibrium state, are investigated. The analysis is based on the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach in a triangular triple quantum-dot (TTQD) structure. In the absence of magnetic field, TTQD has four-fold degenerate chiral ground states with degenerate spin chirality. When a perpendicular magnetic field is applied, the chiral interaction is induced by the magnetic flux threading through TTQD and the four-fold degenerate states split into two chiral state pairs. The chiral excited states manifest as chiral splitting of the Kondo peak in the spectral function. The theoretical analysis is confirmed by the numerical computations. Furthermore, under a Zeeman magnetic field B, the chiral Kondo peak splits into four peaks, owing to the splitting of spin freedom. The influence of spin chirality on the Kondo effect signifies an important role of the phase factor. This work provides insight into the quantum transport of strongly correlated electronic systems.  相似文献
