ηc Physics at BESⅢ

An introduction for η_c physics research is presented in this paper, which shows that the meachnism of η_c decays can't be well described by current theoretical models and detailed experimental measurements need to be done with larger η_c sample. Based on the expected J/ψ and ψ′events taken with the planed BESⅢ detector in one year, the η_c physics researches are discussed extensively, including the measurements of branching fractions of different final states, the search for new decay modes, precision measurements of mass and width, and the search for rare decays. At last, the study of η′_c decays is also discussed briefly.     

J/ψ Physics at BES

Based on 9.0×10⁶ J/ψ data collected at BES, a systematic physics analysis has been Performed. We confirmed the existence of ξ(2230) in J/ψ→γKK and observed for the first time the non-strange decay modes ξ(2230)→π⁺π^－,π⁰π⁰,and pp. The resonance and polarization parameters of f₀(980) and f₂(1270) were measured. The moment stUdy on J/ψ→γK⁺K^－ revealed that the controversial f_J,(1710) is composed of two states, a 0⁺⁺ and a 2⁺⁺. With the help of PWA method, the spin-Parities for η(1440) and f₀(1500) were obtained, and their main decay modes were found.     

Determination of event start time at BESⅢ

The principle of the method for the BESⅢ event start time determination and the code construction are described. The investigation of influence of the noise, the method of rejecting noise and the performance checking by the Monte Carlo physics data sample are also presented. The preliminary results got from the Monte Carlo simulation are presented, the reconstruction efficiency of J/ψ→ anything events at noise level 0~60% can achieve above 99%, and the error rate is below 1%.     

Calibration of RPC-based muon detector at BESⅢ

The calibration algorithm for RPC-based muon detector at BESIII has been developed. The calibration method, calibration error and algorithm performance are studied. The primary results of efficiency and noise at layer, module and strip levels have been calibrated with cosmic ray data. The calibration constants are available for simulation and reconstruction tuning. The results of Monte Carlo and data are also compared to check the validation and reliability of the algorithm.

Mini-review of rare charmonium decays at BESⅢ

Recently, the LHCb experiment announced 3.5σ evidence for direct CP violation in D⁰ decay by looking at the difference between A_CP(D⁰→K⁺K^-) and A_CP(D⁰→π⁺π^-). This is the rst evidence of CP violation in a charm system, which may indicate new physics beyond the Standard Model. Motivated by this measurement, we review rare processes in charmonium decay, especially, the weak decay, C or P violated decay, and lepton avor violated decays. In case the new physics appears in charm sector, these rare decays of charmonium states will provide an opportunity to search for signi cant contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. With huge J/ψ and ψ(2S) samples in BES0 experiment, the rare decays may be feasible.

Multi-Variable Particle ID for BESⅡ Physics Analysis

A multi-variable particle identification method is developed for the BESⅡ physics analysis. Besides the traditionally used TOF-T and dE/dx information, TOF-Q and BSC-E are also used to improve the particle discrimination ability. It is shown that the particle identification efficiency, misidentification probability and systematic error could be improved with this new method. The multi-variable method can be extended to even more variables, and can be used in other experiments.     

Test of BESⅢ RPC in the avalanche mode

The installation of the BESⅢ RPC system has been completed. Cosmic ray test results show that they perform very well in streamer mode and meet the BESⅢ requirements. We have tested several RPCs in the avalanche mode with the addition of extra SF₆ in the gas mixture. We find an efficiency plateau that reaches ～95%, and a time resolution of 1.8 ns. This demonstrates that the BESⅢ-type RPC can work in the avalanche mode as well.     

Determination of the number of ψ' events at BESⅢ

The number of ψ’ events accumulated by the BESⅢ experiment from March 3 through April 14, 2009, is determined by counting inclusive hadronic events. The result is 106.41×(1.00±0.81%)×106 . The error is systematic dominant; the statistical error is negligible.     

Trigger efficiencies at BESⅢ

Trigger efficiencies at BESⅢ were determined for both the J/ψ and ψ' data taking of 2009. Both dedicated runs and physics datasets are used; efficiencies are presented for Bhabha-scattering events, generic hadronic decay events involving charged tracks, dimuon events and ψ'→π+π-J/ψ, J/ψ→ 1+1- events.The efficiencies are found to lie well above 99% for all relevant physics cases, thus fulfilling the BESⅢ design specifications.

Application of SNi PER framework to BESⅢ physics analysis

A fast physics analysis framework has been developed based on SNi PER to process the increasingly large data sample collected by BESⅢ.In this framework,a reconstructed event data model with Smart Ref is designed to improve the speed of Input/Output operations,and necessary physics analysis tools are migrated from BOSS to SNi PER.A real physics analysis e~+e~-→π~+π~-J/ψ is used to test the new framework,and achieves a factor of10.3 improvement in Input/Output speed compared to BOSS.Further tests show that the improvement is mainly attributed to the new reconstructed event data model and the lazy-loading functionality provided by Smart Ref.     

Simulation Study of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter Triggers in BESⅢ

Based on the detector and trigger simulation of beijing spectrometer Ⅲ (besⅢ), schemes of besⅢ emc triggers are studied. neutral triggers, bhabha triggers and charged event triggers are designed to fulfill the requirements of the physics goals. the trigger parameters are optimized and the ability of backgrounds rejection are carefully studied. trigger simulation for some typical physics channels are studied and the expected backgrounds event rates are obtained     

Significance of absolute energy scale for physics at BESⅢ

The effects of absolute energy calibration on BESⅢ physics are discussed in detail, which mainly involve the effects on τ mass measurement, cross section scan measurement, and generic error determination in other measurements.
