Suppose acts amenably on a measure space with quasi-invariant -finite measure . Let be an isometric representation of on and a finite Radon measure on . We show that the operator has -operator norm not exceeding the -operator norm of the convolution operator defined by . We shall also prove an analogous result for the maximal function associated to a countable family of Radon measures .

A -curve is a smooth rational curve of self-intersection , where is a positive integer. In 1998 Hirschowitz asked whether a smooth rational surface defined over the field of complex numbers, having an anti-canonical divisor not nef and of self-intersection zero, has -curves. In this paper we prove that for such a surface , the set of -curves on is finite but non-empty, and that may have no -curves. Related facts are also considered.

The convexity number of a set is the least size of a family of convex sets with . is countably convex if its convexity number is countable. Otherwise is uncountably convex.

Uncountably convex closed sets in have been studied recently by Geschke, Kubis, Kojman and Schipperus. Their line of research is continued in the present article. We show that for all , it is consistent that there is an uncountably convex closed set whose convexity number is strictly smaller than all convexity numbers of uncountably convex subsets of .

Moreover, we construct a closed set whose convexity number is and that has no uncountable -clique for any 1$">. Here is a -clique if the convex hull of no -element subset of is included in . Our example shows that the main result of the above-named authors, a closed set either has a perfect -clique or the convexity number of is in some forcing extension of the universe, cannot be extended to higher dimensions.

Let be an arc-analytic function (i.e., analytic on every analytic arc) and assume that for some integer the function is real analytic. We prove that is locally Lipschitz; even if is less than the multiplicity of . We show that the result fails if is only a , arc-analytic function (even blow-analytic), . We also give an example of a non-Lipschitz arc-analytic solution of a polynomial equation , where are real analytic functions.

We consider Dirichlet eigenfunctions of the Bunimovich stadium , satisfying . Write where is the central rectangle and denotes the ``wings,' i.e., the two semicircular regions. It is a topic of current interest in quantum theory to know whether eigenfunctions can concentrate in as . We obtain a lower bound on the mass of in , assuming that itself is -normalized; in other words, the norm of is controlled by times the norm in . Moreover, if is an quasimode, the same result holds, while for an quasimode we prove that the norm of is controlled by times the norm in . We also show that the norm of may be controlled by the integral of along , where is a smooth factor on vanishing at . These results complement recent work of Burq-Zworski which shows that the norm of is controlled by the norm in any pair of strips contained in , but adjacent to .

A sequence of operators is said to be hypercyclic if there exists a vector , called hypercyclic for , such that is dense. A hypercyclic subspace for is a closed infinite-dimensional subspace of, except for zero, hypercyclic vectors. We prove that if is a sequence of operators on that has a hypercyclic subspace, then there exist (i) a sequence of one variable polynomials such that is hypercyclic for every fixed and (ii) an operator that maps nonzero vectors onto hypercyclic vectors for .

We complement earlier work of several authors.

This paper provides a sufficient condition to guarantee the stability of weak limits under nonlinear operators acting on vector-valued Lebesgue spaces. This nonlinear framework places the weak convergence in perspective. Such an approach allows short and insightful proofs of important results in Functional Analysis such as: weak convergence in implies strong convergence in for all , weak convergence in vs. strong convergence in and the Brezis-Lieb theorem. The final goal is to use this framework as a strategy to grapple with a nonlinear weak spectral problem on .

For a -smooth bump function we show that the gradient range is the closure of its interior, provided that admits a modulus of continuity satisfying as . The result is a consequence of a more general result about gradient ranges of bump functions of the same degree of smoothness. For such bump functions we show that for open sets , either the intersection is empty or its topological dimension is at least two. The proof relies on a new Morse-Sard type result where the smoothness hypothesis is independent of the dimension of the space.

We note that the degeneration arguments given by the author in 2003 to derive a formula for the number of maps from a general curve of genus to with prescribed ramification also yields weaker results when working over the real numbers or -adic fields. Specifically, let be such a field: we see that given , , , and satisfying , there exists smooth curves of genus together with points such that all maps from to can, up to automorphism of the image, be defined over . We also note that the analagous result will follow from maps to higher-dimensional projective spaces if it is proven in the case , , and that thanks to work of Sottile, unconditional results may be obtained for special ramification conditions.

In this note, we explore commutativity up to a factor for bounded operators and in a complex Hilbert space. Conditions on possible values of the factor are formulated and shown to depend on spectral properties of the operators. Commutativity up to a unitary factor is considered. In some cases, we obtain some properties of the solution space of the operator equation and explore the structures of and that satisfy for some A quantum effect is an operator on a complex Hilbert space that satisfies The sequential product of quantum effects and is defined by We also obtain properties of the sequential product.

Steinberg has shown (this is the formulation of R. Kane) that is a Poincaré duality algebra if and only if is a pseudoreflection group. In this note we explore the situation for fields of nonzero characteristic. We prove an analogue of Steinberg's theorem for the case and give a counterexample in the modular case when .
