In the present research, mechanical and thermal properties of high-density polyethylene/wood flour were improved by incorporating nanoclay (Cloisite 30B) and antioxidant (Irganox B225) in the compound. Design of experiments was carried out to optimize composition among nine compounds and to investigate the effect of nanoclay and antioxidant (0–5 phr) and (0–0.4 phr), respectively. The results of mechanical tests showed approximately 24% increase in the tensile strength of compounds containing 2.5 and 5.0 part per hundred (phr) of the nanoclay in the composite compared with the same samples without nanoclay. The tensile modulus of composites increased 7.3% by increasing the level of nanoclay from 0 to 2.5 phr. However, a further increase in the nanoclay content led to a 4.3% decrease in tensile modulus. Evaluation of the thermal oxidation stability of samples confirmed that the thermal oxidation of composites decreased with increasing nanoclay from 0 to 5.0 phr and increased significantly with the addition of the antioxidant.

A feasibility study was carried out on the utilization of Alkanolamide (ALK) on silica reinforcement of natural rubber (NR) by using a semi-efficient cure system. The ALK was incorporated into the NR compound at 1.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.0 and 9.0 phr. An investigation was carried out to examine the effect of ALK on the cure characteristics and properties of NR compounds. It was found that ALK gave shorter scorch and cure times for silica-filled NR compounds. ALK also exhibited higher torque differences, tensile modulus, tensile strength, hardness and crosslink density of up to 5.0 phr of ALK loading, and then decreased with further increases of ALK loading. The resilience increased with increased ALK loading. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs proved that 5.0 phr of ALK in the silica-filled NR compound exhibited the greatest matrix tearing line and surface roughness due to higher reinforcement level of the silica, as well as better dispersion and cure enhancement.  相似文献

The effect of Alkanolamide (ALK) loading on properties on three different types of carbon black (CB)-filled rubbers (SMR-L, ENR-25, and SBR) was investigated. The ALK loadings were 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 and 7.0 phr. It was found that ALK gave cure enhancement, better filler dispersion and greater rubber–filler interaction. ALK also enhanced modulus, hardness, resilience and tensile strength, especially up to 5.0 phr of loading in SMR-L and SBR compounds, and at 1.0 phr in ENR-25 compound. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proved that each optimum ALK loading exhibited the greatest matrix tearing line and surface roughness due to better rubber - filler interaction.  相似文献

The main objective of the present study was to investigate the synergistic effect of simultaneous use of two reinforcing fillers in rubber compounds based on acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer (NBR). Silica was used as reinforcing filler in all samples and the loading content was 25 phr. 3 and 5 phr of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were used as second reinforcing filler in NBR/silica compounds. Melt mixing method was employed for compound preparation. The effects of carbon nanotube/silica hybrid filler on mechanical and vulcanization characteristics of the rubber compounds were investigated. These results revealed that addition of the reinforcing filler, either carbon nanotube or silica, shortened the optimum cure time (t90) and also scorch time (ts1) of samples compared to that of pure NBR compound. In hybrid compounds, the reduction in optimum cure time and scorch time was higher than that of for silica-filled NBR or CNT-filled NBR compounds. This can be attributed to the synergistic effect between CNT and silica as two reinforcing agents in NBR compounds. Regardless the composition of the reinforcing filler, an increase of the relaxed storage modulus is observed, while the tan δ value is decreased steadily. The dynamic modulus reinforcement of nanocomposites was examined by the Guth Gold and Modified Guth Gold equations. For hybrid samples, the experimental values show a significant positive deviation from model predictions. According to the Barlow’s formula, hybrid compounds show higher burst strength compared to silica or CNT filled NBR compounds.  相似文献

Rubber blend/clay nanocomposites based on the 50/50 (wt %) natural rubber/butadiene rubber was prepared by the latex method via mixing the latex of 50/50 NR/BR blend with different amounts of the aqueous sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) dispersion and co-coagulating the mixture. XRD and TEM were used to characterize structure of the nanocomposites. It was found that fully exfoliated structure could be obtained by this method only when the low loading of layered silicate (up to 5 phr) is used. With increasing the clay content, both non-exfoliated (stacked layers) and exfoliated structures can be observed simultaneously in the nanocomposites. Nanocomposites showed mechanical properties better than the clay-free volcanizate. Moreover, modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength increased significantly by increasing the clay amount up to 5 phr and then remained almost constant by further increasing the clay content. Improvement in the mechanical properties by increasing the clay loading up to 5 phr was attributed to the nano-reinforcement effect of Na-MMT. TGA results indicated an improvement in the main decomposition temperature by increasing the clay amount.  相似文献

Natural rubber based composites were prepared by incorporating Wood flour of two different particle size ranges (250–300 µm) and (300–425 µm) and concentrations (15 and 30 phr) into the matrix, using a Banbury® internal mixer according to a base formulation. Curing characteristics of the samples were studied. Influence of particle size and loading of filler on the properties of the composites was analyzed. Results obtained show that the addition of wood flour to natural rubber increased scorch time and curing time and caused improvement in modulus at 300% strain and in tear properties. However, it decreased tensile strength and elongation at break. The particle size range of 300–425 µm was found to offer the best overall balance of mechanical and dynamic properties (tan δ and viscous torque). Swelling behavior of the composites in toluene was also analyzed in order to determine the rubber volume fraction and crosslinking density. Composites with the bigger particle size wood flour were found to have greater crosslinking density than the ones with smaller particle size, fact that could possibly indicate a better rubber-filler interaction in the former. Major percentage of filler increased slightly this interaction. Water absorption behavior of the composites with wood flour reached a maximum of 12% w/w when 30 phr of filler were incorporated; nonetheless, particle size did not affect this property. The ageing study in presence of air at 70 °C revealed that natural rubber composites with wood flour maintained the same classification cell with temperature as the pure rubber. A compound with 30 phr of carbon black was prepared for comparative purposes. Results obtained were as expected. Scorch time decreased and higher values of modulus at 300% strain and tensile strength were achieved, due to strongest interaction between filler and elastomer.  相似文献

Rubber compounds based on styrene-butadiene rubber/ethylene propylene diene monomer blends of different compositions (60/40, 70/30, 80/20, 90/10, 100/0) reinforced with 1 wt%, 3 wt%, 5 wt% and 7 wt% organoclay (Cloisite 20A) were prepared on a two roll mill via a vulcanization process and characterized by several techniques. Results of X-ray diffraction showed expansion of the inter-gallery distance, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs confirmed that the prepared nanocomposite samples have intercalated and partially exfoliated structures. Cure characteristics showed that, organoclay not only accelerates the vulcanization reaction, but also gives rise to a marked increase of the torque, indicating crosslink density of the prepared compounds increases at the presence of organoclay. Mechanical properties of samples received markedly increase by clay loading due to the good interaction established between nanoclay particles and polymer matrix as it was evidenced by SEM photomicrographs. At the same time, rheological properties showed that addition of nanoclay could improve storage modulus as well as complex viscosity of SBR/EPDM samples. The results of ozone test revealed that the ozone resistance of samples significantly increases as nanoclay or EPDM content increases.  相似文献

Natural rubber crosslinked by dicumyl peroxide in amounts up to 25 parts per hundred of rubber (phr) showed a maximum in tensile strength near 1 phr, followed by a steep decrease to a minimum near 5 phr. The ultimate elongation decreased from 870% at 0.5 phr. to about 10% above 10 phr. The modulus increased linearly with increase of crosslinking. The creep rate decreased from 5.6% per decade at 0.5 phr to zero at 5 phr and higher values. Crystallization, with a resultant abrupt increase in creep, was noted in specimens held in the stretched condition for more than one day. Between 5 and 25 phr this system (when crystallization is avoided) appears to function as an ideal elastic network and can be recommended for studies of rubber elasticity since no variation of modulus with time is observed.  相似文献

The effect of bentonite clay loading on curing characteristics and tear strength of bentonite filled ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) composite were studied. Compounding was carried out on two-roll mill and vulcanization was done at 1500C. Torque values, scorch time and optimum cure time of the prepared rubber compound were assessed by using Mosanto Disc Rheometer (MDR 2000). Results indicated that the maximum torque of EPDM/Bt composite decreases at high bentonite loading. Increasing in values with increasing bentonite loading was recorded for minimum torque and optimum cure time of EPDM/Bt composite. The increase is related with the increase in viscosity due to the increasing of bentonite clay loading in EPDM matrix. Scorch time was found to be decreasing up to 30 phr bentonite clay. Results also show that tear strength of EPDM/Bt composite increased with increasing bentonite loading up to 90 phr. The reason is probably due to agglomeration occur causes the reduction in properties at high loading above 90 phr bentonite clay. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of tear fracture surface of EPDM/Bt composite illustrated that with increasing bentonite loading up to 90 phr bentonite clay, a better dispersion of bentonite clay is achieved as compared to lower loading, resulting in high tear strength value for EPDM/Bt composite.  相似文献

Ionic elastomers based on carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR) crosslinked with magnesium oxide (OMg) and filled with layered nanoclays have been prepared. Two types of nanofillers were employed: a commercial one (Cloisite 15 A) and the other prepared in our laboratory (BCA-ODA). The properties of raw and vulcanized compounds have been studied in order to elucidate the effect of layered nanoclays. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that during compounding and crosslinking the macromolecular chains of rubber were intercalated in a commercial nanofiller, whilst our nanoclay was exfoliated. However, this fact does not affect the properties of compounds homogeneously. Vulcanization parameters, Mooney viscosity and decay and rheological properties were affected depending on the filler type. Mechanical properties were not significantly varied, but glass transition temperature and ionic transition temperature were shifted in comparison with those of the unfilled compound.  相似文献

Rubber compounds are reinforced with fillers such as carbon black and silica. In general, filled rubber compounds shows smooth rheological behavior and mechanical properties. Variation in rheological behavior and mechanical properties was studied in terms of the filler composition using natural rubber compounds filled with both carbon black and silica CB/Si = 0/60, 20/40, 30/30, 40/20 and 60/0 phr (parts per hundred rubber is parts of any non-rubbery material per hundred parts of raw gum elastomer (rubbery material)). The rheological behaviour can be showed in measurement of Mooney viscosity and cure time. The Mooney viscosity of rubber compounds increase with the increasing the carbon black in the compounds. The compound filled with CB/Si of 30/30 and 60/0 showed abnormal rheological behaviour in which the cure time decreased suddenly and the increased at certain ratio during the measurement. The mechanical properties such as hardness, abrasion resistance and tensile stress at 300% elongation were studied. In the hardness and abrasion resistance measurement, the higher ratio CB/Si decrease contribution of silica, which resulting smaller of hardness value. Ratio CB/Si 40/20 gives an optimum filler blended. It is also clearly understood that higher abrasion resistance mainly due to the lower hardness value under the same condition. The tensile stress at 300% elongation of rubber compound increased with the increasing carbon black filler.  相似文献

Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) fibers were used in a chopped form and at different concentrations as a reinforcing material in ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymers (EPDM). The effect of radiation dose and fiber concentration on the mechanical properties of the vulcanized rubber composites obtained was measured. It was found that γ-irradiation improves the interfacial adhesion between UHMW-PE fiber (Spectra 1000) and EPDM matrix which was detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the Young modulus of the composites increases as the irradiation dose increases. Increasing the concentration of the fibers up to 40 phr leads to an enhancement in mechanical properties and swelling resistance of obtained composites, especially in the absence of carbon black. The absolute value of the modulus increased by a factor of at least two with the addition of carbon black. Moreover the tear strength of reinforced and filled EPDM was improved with respect to reinforced rubber. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

75/25 (wt %) NR/BR blend/clay nanocomposites were prepared via a combined latex/melt intercalation method, for the first time. At first, NR latex was mixed with various amounts of the aqueous sodium montmorillomte (Na-MMT) dispersion. Obtained mixtures were co-coagulated by dilute solution of the sulfuric acid, washed several times with the distilled water and dried under vacuum. The NR/ clay compounds were then mixed with given amounts of the BR and vulcanizing ingredients in a 6-inch two-roll mill and then vulcanized at 150°C in a hot press. The nanocomposites have better mechanical properties than the clay-free NR/BR blend vulcanizates. Furthermore, modulus and hardness (Shore A) increased by increase of the clay loading in the range of 0–15 phr while tensile strength and elongation at break increased with increasing the clay content up to 5 phr and then decreased gradually by further increase of the clay loading. It was concluded from results of the XRD and mechanical test that nanocomposites containing less than 10 phr clay may show the fully exfoliated structure. With increasing the clay content to 10 and 15 phr, both non-exfoliated (stacked layers) and exfoliated structures may be observed simultaneously in the nanocomposites. TGA results indicated an improvement in main and end decomposition by increasing the clay loading.  相似文献

The effect of nanoclay on the fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated. Fatigue tests were carried out on edge notched specimens under cyclic tension loadings. A power–law dependency between crack growth rate and tearing energy was obtained. Natural rubber (NR) filled with 5 phr organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) possessed the lowest value of the exponent, b, and the smallest crack growth rate at a given tearing energy, denoting the strongest resistance to crack growth. Strain‐induced crystallization was probed by synchrotron WAXD experiments, showing earliest occurrence and strongest ability of crystallization in NR with 5 phr OMMT due to the better exfoliation and orientation of clay layers. The study on the viscoelastic property by dynamic mechanical analysis indicated that NR filled with 10 phr OMMT had the largest contribution to tearing energy attributed to the viscoelastic dissipation in the viscoelastic region in front of the crack tip. This revealed that the strain‐induced crystallization played a more important role in the crack growth resistance than the viscoelastic dissipation for clay filled rubber. Response surface methodology was used for predicting the optimal composition of vegetable oil and carbon black in rubber compounding. Central composite rotatable design for two variables at five levels was chosen as the experimental design. The data obtained from measurement of properties was fitted as a two variable second order equation and were plotted as contour plots using programme developed in MATLAB v.5. It is observed from the contour plots that the increase in cross-link density caused by the formation of rubber mono-layer from its multi-layer on increasing the carbon black loading upto the central point (50 phr) of experimental region increases 300% modulus and elongation at break and reduces the ultimate properties like tear strength and tensile strength. On the other-hand hardness increases with increase in solid inclusion of carbon black. From the contours it is observed that the addition of vegetable oil upto 2-3 phr, cross-link density increases due to its coupling action leading to increase in hardness and modulus and lowering of ultimate properties like tensile strength and elongation at break. Addition of further amount of vegetable oil shows less coupling and more plasticising effect leading to increase in tear strength, tensile strength and elongation at break and decrease in hardness and 300% modulus.  相似文献

The effects of filler loading and a new silane coupling agent 3‐octanoylthio‐1‐ propyltriethoxysilane (NXT silane) on the polymer‐filler interaction and mechanical properties of silica‐filled and carbon black‐filled natural rubber (NR) compounds were studied. Silica (high dispersion silica7000GR, VN2, and VN3) and carbon black (N330) were used as the fillers, and the loading range was from 0 to 50 phr. The loading of NXT silane was from 0 to 6 phr. Experimental results show that the maximum and minimum torques of silica and carbon black‐filled NR increase with increasing filler loading. With increasing filler loading, the scorch time and optimum cure time decrease for carbon black‐filled NR, but increase for silica‐filled NR. The minimum torque, scorch time, and optimum cure time decrease because of the presence of NXT silane. For the carbon black and silica‐filled NR, the tensile strength and elongation at break have maximum values, but the hardness, M300, M100, and tear strength keep increasing with filler loading. The mechanical properties of silica‐filled NR were improved in the presence of NXT silane. With increasing filler loading, the storage modulus of filled NR increases, but the loss factor decreases. Carbon black shows the strongest polymer‐filler interaction, followed by VN3, 7000GR, and VN2. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 573–584, 2005  相似文献

This work focused on the effect of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) on the curing characteristics, aging resistance and thermal stability of natural rubber (NR) reinforced with carbon black (CB). Sharing the same fillers loading of 45 parts per hundred rubber (phr), NR/NCC/CB composites with different NCC/CB ratios (i.e. 0/45, 5/40, 10/35, 15/30, 20/25 phr) were prepared and analyzed. Resorcinol and hexamethylene tetramine (RH), acting as the modifier in NR/NCC interface, was also discussed for its influence. The result showed that an relatively higher ratio of NCC/CB led to a lower torque, a shorter cure time (T 90), a slightly longer scorch time (T 10) and a bigger vulcanization rate constant (K). This tendency suggested that the existence of NCC accelerated the vulcanization process. Additionally, modified by RH, NR/NCC/CB compounds exhibited a short T 10 and a elevated torque. And a moderate RH content would lower the E a of vulcanization. A 10 phr substitute of CB by NCC can help to improve aging resistance in terms of mechanical properties. In a high temperature aging condition, composites with 10 phr NCC also performed the highest storage modulus (G′) among composites tested. A moderate NCC content contributed to the best retention of G′ after high temperature aging, so did the incorporation of RH. With the partial replacement of CB by NCC, the temperature of 5% weight-lose had a slight drop and the apparent crosslink density showed a decrease. Thanks to the interaction of RH with both NR and NCC, composites showed an improvement in apparent crosslink density after modified by RH.  相似文献

A series of chitosan derivatives, namely polydiethylamino-ethylmethacrylate-chitosan-graft-copolymer (chitosan-g-DEAEMA), polycarboxy-chitosan-graft copolymer (chitosan-g-COOH), polyvinyl alcohol chitosan-graft-copolymer (chitosan-g-VOH), and carboxymethyl-chitosan (CM-chitosan), were synthesized and investigated as antioxidants for natural rubber (NR) and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) mixes and vulcanizates to increase their durability. The rheometric characteristics of the rubber mixes were determined using an oscillating disc rheometer. The physico-mechanical properties of the rubber vulcanized were measured before and after exposure to thermal oxidative aging. It was found that the CM-chitosan had an accelerating effect on the curing process of NR and NBR. Also, the investigated polymers enhanced the properties of rubbers (NR and NBR) especially after ageing up to 7 days compared with commercial antioxidants, such as phenyl ß-naphthylamine (PßN) and N-isopropel-Nphenyl-p-phenylene diamine (IPPD) which are used in the rubber industry. After ageing, the retained values of tensile strength, modulus at 100 % strain, and elongation at break were improved. The optimum concentration of the investigated compounds used to give good properties was found to be 1–2 parts per 100 of rubber (phr). In addition, these prepared polymers showed a decrease in the equilibrium swelling of rubber in toluene which is the proper solvent and consequently increases the crosslink density for rubbers.  相似文献

Layered silicate/natural rubber composites were prepared by direct polymer melt intercalation. Na‐montmorillonite Kunipia‐F and its organic derivates (organo‐clays) prepared by ion exchange were used as clay fillers. Silica (SiO2) Ultrasil VN3, a filler commonly used in the rubber industry, was used in combination with clay fillers. The effect of clay or organo‐clay loading from 1 up to 10 phr without (0 phr) or with silica (15 phr) showed significant improvement of the tensile properties (stress at break, strain at break and modulus M100). Modification of montmorillonite by three alkylammonium cations with the same length of alkylammonium chain (18 carbons) and different structure resulted in altered reinforcing and plasticizing effects of the filler in composites with rubber matrix.
