We solve Einstein's field equations in higher-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime with strange quark matter attached to the string cloud, assuming one parameter group of con formal motions. The solutions match with the higher-dimensional Reissner-Nordstroem metric on the boundary at r=ro. The features of the solutions are also discussed in the framework of higher-dimensional spacetime.

We study the gravitational collapse of the general spherically symmetric null strange quark fluid having the equation of state, p = ( – 4B)/n, where B is the bag constant. It is an interesting feature that the initial data set giving rise to a naked singularity in the Vaidya collapse of null fluid gets covered due to the presence of the strange quark matter component. Its implication for the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture is discussed.

In this paper we study quark matter and strange quark matter in higher-dimensional spherical symmetric space-times. We analyze strange quark matter for the different equations of state and obtain the space-time geometry of quark and strange quark matter. We also discuss the features of the obtained solutions in the context of higher-dimensional general theory of relativity.

We discuss the possibility that the detection of gravitational waves emitted by compact stars may allow to constrain the MIT bag model of quark matter equation of state. Our results show that the combined knowledge of the frequency of the emitted gravitational wave and of the mass, or the radiation radius, of the source allows one to discriminate between strange stars and neutron stars and set stringent bounds on the bag constants.

We investigate the possibility of cosmic censorship violation in the gravitational collapse of radiating dyon solution. It is shown that the final outcome of the collapse depends sensitively on the electric and magnetic charge parameters. The graphs of the outer apparent horizon, inner Cauchy horizon for different values of parameters are drawn. It is found that the electric and magnetic components push the apparent horizon towards the retarded time-coordinate axis, which in turn reduces the radius of the apparent horizon in Valdya spacetime. Also, we extend the earlier work of Chamorro and Virbhadra [Pramana, J. Phys. 45 (1995) 181].

Considering the density dependence of quark mass, we investigate the phase transition between the (unpaired) strange quark matter and the color-flavor-locked matter, which are supposed to be two candidates for the ground state of strongly interacting matter. We find that if the current mass of strange quark ms is small, the strange quark matter remains stable unless the baryon density is very high. If ms is large, the phase transition from the strange quark matter to the color-flavor-locked matter in particular to its gapless phase is found to be different from the results predicted by previous works. A complicated phase diagram of three-flavor quark matter is presented, in which the color-flavor-locked phase region is suppressed for moderate densities.

General Relativity assumes that spacetime is fully described by the metric alone. An alternative is the so called Palatini formalism where the metric and the connections are taken as independent quantities. The metric-affine theory of gravity has attracted considerable attention recently, since it was shown that within this framework some cosmological models, based on some generalized gravitational actions, can account for the current accelerated expansion of the universe. However we think that metric-affine gravity deserves much more attention than that related to cosmological applications and so we consider here metric-affine gravity theories in which the gravitational action is a general function of the scalar curvature while the matter action is allowed to depend also on the connection which is not a priori symmetric. This general treatment will allow us to address several open issues such as: the relation between metric-affine f(R) gravity and General Relativity (in vacuum as well as in the presence of matter), the implications of the dependence (or independence) of the matter action on the connections, the origin and role of torsion and the viability of the minimal-coupling principle.

Properties of hybrid stars with a mixed phase composed of asymmetric nuclear matter and strange quark matter are studied. The quark phase is investigated by the quark quasiparticle model with a self-consistent thermodynamic and statistical treatment. We present the stability windows of the strange quark matter with respect to the interaction coupling constant versus the bag constant. We find that the appearance of the quark–hadron mixed phases is associated with the meta-stable or unstable regions of the pure quark matter parameters. The mass–radius relation of the hybrid star is dominated by the equation of state of quark matter rather than nuclear matter. The contour plots of the maximum mass of the hybrid star are shown in the plane of the coupling constant and the bag constant.

We reexamine the surface composition of strange stars. Strange quark stars are hypothetical compact stars which could exist if strange quark matter was absolutely stable. It is widely accepted that they are characterized by an enormous density gradient (10(26) g/cm4) and large electric fields at the surface. By investigating the possibility of realizing a heterogeneous crust, comprised of nuggets of strange quark matter embedded in an uniform electron background, we find that the strange star surface has a much reduced density gradient and negligible electric field. We comment on how our findings will impact various proposed observable signatures for strange stars.

The gravitational collapse of a star is an important issue both for general relativity and astrophysics, which is related to the well-known “frozen star” paradox. This paradox has been discussed intensively and seems to have been solved in the comoving-like coordinates. However, to a real astrophysical observer within a finite time, this problem should be discussed in the point of view of the distant rest-observer, which is the main purpose of this Letter. Following the seminal work of Oppenheimer and Snyder (1939), we present the exact solution for one or two dust shells collapsing towards a pre-existing black hole. We find that the metric of the inner region of the shell is time-dependent and the clock inside the shell becomes slower as the shell collapses towards the pre-existing black hole. This means the inner region of the shell is influenced by the property of the shell, which is contrary to the result in Newtonian theory. It does not contradict the Birkhoff's theorem, since in our case we cannot arbitrarily select the clock inside the shell in order to ensure the continuity of the metric. This result in principle may be tested experimentally if a beam of light travels across the shell, which will take a longer time than without the shell. It can be considered as the generalized Shapiro effect, because this effect is due to the mass outside, but not inside as the case of the standard Shapiro effect. We also found that in real astrophysical settings matter can indeed cross a black hole's horizon according to the clock of an external observer and will not accumulate around the event horizon of a black hole, i.e., no “frozen star” is formed for an external observer as matter falls towards a black hole. Therefore, we predict that only gravitational wave radiation can be produced in the final stage of the merging process of two coalescing black holes. Our results also indicate that for the clock of an external observer, matter, after crossing the event horizon, will never arrive at the “singularity” (i.e. the exact center of the black hole), i.e., for all black holes with finite lifetimes their masses are distributed within their event horizons, rather than concentrated at their centers. We also present a worked-out example of the Hawking's area theorem.

Static spherically symmetric space-time is studied to describe dense compact star with quark matter within the framework of MIT Bag Model. The system of Einstein’s field equations for anisotropic matter is expressed as a new system of differential equations using transformations and it is solved for a particular general form of gravitational potential with parameters. For a particular parameter, as an example, it is shown that the model satisfies all major physical features expected in a realistic star. The generated model also smoothly matches with the Schwarzschild exterior metric at the boundary of the star. It is shown that the generated solutions are useful to model strange quark stars.

Constraints on the size of the Coulomb barrier and the universal abundance of stable strange quark matter are calculated assuming that the evolution of stars and the nucleosynthesis at stellar sites are not dominated by strange quark matter. The results are applied to find the minimum required beam energy and sensitivity in a heavy ion activation search for strange quark matter in laboratory samples.

A cosmological model in which the universe has its critical density and gravitational constants generalized as coupling scalars in Einstein's theory is considered. A general method of solving the field equations is given. An exact solution for matter distribution in cosmological models satisfying G=G0(R/R0)n is presented. Corresponding physical interpretations of the cosmological solutions are also discussed.

The properties of strange quark matter at finite temperatures and in equilibrium with respect to weak interaction are explored on the basis of the MIT bag model picture of QCD. Furthermore, to determine the stability of strange quark matter, analogous investigations are also performed for nuclear matter within Walecka's model field theory. It is found that strange quark matter can be stable at zero external pressure only for temperatures below 20 MeV. The existence of this limiting temperature is a consequence of the Van der Waals like behaviour of nuclear matter at low temperatures.

We report on the study of the mass-radius (M–R) relation and the radial oscillations of magnetized proto strange stars. For the quark matter we have employed the very recent modification, the temperature- and density-dependent quark mass model of the well-known density-dependent quark mass model. We find that the effect of magnetic field, both on the maximum mass and radial frequencies, is rather small. Also a proto strange star, whether magnetized or otherwise, is more likely to evolve into a strange star rather than transform into a black hole.

The field equations of a generalized f(R)f(R) type gravity model, in which there is an arbitrary coupling between matter and geometry, are obtained. The equations of motion for test particles are derived from a variational principle in the particular case in which the Lagrange density of the matter is an arbitrary function of the energy-density of the matter only. Generally, the motion is non-geodesic, and takes place in the presence of an extra force orthogonal to the four-velocity. The Newtonian limit of the model is also considered. The perihelion precession of an elliptical planetary orbit in the presence of an extra force is obtained in a general form, and the magnitude of the extra gravitational effects is constrained in the case of a constant extra force by using Solar System observations.

Low temperature of the phase transition into the quark-gluon plasma correspond to low values of the bag model constant and to absolutely stable strange quark matter. Some of the observed pulsars are identified quite reliably as neutron stars. If strange matter is stable, the central density of these pulsars is to be smaller that critical density of the phase transition into the nonstrange quark matter. The nonstrange quark matter being formed turns to more stable strange matter on a weak interaction timescale converting neutron stars into strange stars. The requirement of stability of old and newly born neutron stars is used to constrain the bag model constant and the critical temperature of the phase transition into the quark-gluon plasma at zero chemical potential.
