Summary We have applied topological methods to analyze chaotic time series data from the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction. First, the periodic orbits shadowed by the data set were identified. Next, a three-dimensional embedding without self-intersections was constructed from the data set. The topological structure of that flow was visualized by constructing a branched manifold such that every periodic orbit in the flow could be held by the branched manifold. The branched manifold, or induced template, was computed using the three lowest-period orbits. The organization of the higher-period orbits predicted by this induced template was compared with the organization of the orbits reconstructed from the data set with excellent results. The consequences of the presence of certain knots found in the data are discussed.  相似文献

It is known that if the flow of a stochastic differential equation on a compact manifold has only negative Lyapunov exponents, then its limiting behavior can be described by a moving random set σof n points. We study the properties of σ and the associated domains of attraction. For example, we will show that it is supported by a compact set on which the induced flow has only one limiting point. On a d-dimensional sphere, if the support of the stochastic flow contains all the isometries, then n=1 or 2, and in the latter case, the two random points and their domains of attractions are antipodal symmetric  相似文献

We show some computations related to the motion by mean curvature flow of a submanifold inside an ambient Riemannian manifold evolving by Ricci or backward Ricci flow. Special emphasis is given to the possible generalization of Huisken’s monotonicity formula and its connection with the validity of some Li–Yau–Hamilton differential Harnack-type inequalities in a moving Riemannian manifold.  相似文献

As a counterpart of the classical Yamabe problem, a fractional Yamabe flow has been introduced by Jin and Xiong (2014) on the sphere. Here we pursue its study in the context of general compact smooth manifolds with positive fractional curvature. First, we prove that the flow is locally well posed in the weak sense on any compact manifold. If the manifold is locally conformally flat with positive Yamabe invariant, we also prove that the flow is smooth and converges to a constant fractional curvature metric. We provide different proofs using extension properties introduced by Chang and González (2011) for the conformally covariant fractional order operators.  相似文献

A sectional-Anosov flow is a flow for which the maximal invariant set is sectional-hyperbolic. A generalized 3-handlebody is a compact manifold which is built from a 3-disc attaching 0, 1, 2 and 3-handles at its boundary, one at a time, by attaching maps. We prove that there exist a class of orientable generalized 3-handlebodies supporting sectional-Anosov flows, moreover this class of manifolds is strictly large than the previous one studied in [14].  相似文献

In this paper, we study the Ricci flow of solvmanifolds whose Lie algebra has an abelian ideal of codimension one, by using the bracket flow. We prove that solutions to the Ricci flow are immortal, the ω-limit of bracket flow solutions is a single point, and that for any sequence of times there exists a subsequence in which the Ricci flow converges, in the pointed topology, to a manifold which is locally isometric to a flat manifold. We give a functional which is non-increasing along a normalized bracket flow that will allow us to prove that given a sequence of times, one can extract a subsequence converging to an algebraic soliton, and to determine which of these limits are flat. Finally, we use these results to prove that if a Lie group in this class admits a Riemannian metric of negative sectional curvature, then the curvature of any Ricci flow solution will become negative in finite time.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to prove a global existence result with small data for the heat flow for harmonic maps from a manifold flat at infinity into a compact manifold. By flat at infinity we mean that the growth rate of the volumes of the balls on the manifold is the same as in the flat space. This is true for any manifold for small enough radius, but is in general not true when the radius of the ball grows. So prescribing such a growth rate also at infinity selects a class of manifolds on which our result holds. In this setting estimates are available for the heat kernel and its gradient on the base manifold. From such estimates it is easy to get L p L q bounds for the heat kernel. A contraction principle argument then yields a local existence result in a suitable Sobolev space and a global existence result for small data.  相似文献

Since the induced objects on a lightlike submanifold depend on its screen distribution which, in general, is not unique and hence we can not use the classical submanifold theory on a lightlike submanifold in the usual way. Therefore, in present paper, we study screen conformal lightlike submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold, which are essential for the existence of unique screen distribution. We obtain a characterization theorem for the existence of screen conformal lightlike submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold. We prove that if the differential operator Ds is a metric Otsuki connection on transversal lightlike bundle for a screen conformal lightlike submanifold then semi-Riemannian manifold is a semi-Euclidean space. We also obtain some characterization theorems for a screen conformal totally umbilical lightlike submanifold of a semi-Riemannian space form. Further, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a screen conformal lightlike submanifold of constant curvature to be a semi-Euclidean space. Finally, we prove that for an irrotational screen conformal lightlike submanifold of a semi-Riemannian space form, the induced Ricci tensor is symmetric and the null sectional curvature vanishes.  相似文献

We derive the entropy formula for the linear heat equation on general Riemannian manifolds and prove that it is monotone non-increasing on manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. As applications, we study the relation between the value of entropy and the volume of balls of various scales. The results are simpler version, without Ricci flow, of Perelman ’s recent results on volume non-collapsing for Ricci flow on compact manifolds. We also prove that if the entropy for the heat kernel achieves its maximum value zero at some positive time, on any complete Riamannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature, if and only if the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space.  相似文献

If is a Lagrangian manifold immersed into a K?hler-Einstein manifold, nothing is known about its behavior under the mean curvature flow. In contrast to the Euler–Poincaré reduction of geodesic flows of left- or right-invariant metrics on Lie groups to the corresponding Lie algebra (or its dual), one can consider the reduction of the geodesic flows to the group itself. The reduced vector field has a remarkable hydrodynamic interpretation: it is the velocity field for a stationary flow of an ideal fluid. Right- or left-invariant symmetry fields of the reduced field define vortex manifolds for such flows. Now we consider a mechanical system, whose configuration space is a Lie group and whose Lagrangian is invariant with respect to left translations on this group, and assume that the mass geometry f the system may change under the action of internal control forces. Such a system can also be reduced to a Lie group. Without controls, this mechanical system describes a geodesic flow of the left-invariant metric, given by the Lagrangian, and, therefore, its reduced flow is a stationary ideal fluid flow on the Lie group. The standard control problem for such system is to find the conditions under which the system can be brought from any initial position in the configuration space to another preassigned position by changing its mass geometry. We show that under these conditions, by changing the mass geometry, one can also bring one vortex manifold to any other preassigned vortex manifold. The Ricci flow is an evolution equation in the space of Riemannian metrics.A solution for this equation is a curve on the manifold of Riemannian metrics. In this paper we introduce a metric on the manifold of Riemannian metrics such that the Ricci flow becomes a geodesic. We show that the Ricci solitons introduce a special slice on the manifold of Riemannian metrics.  相似文献

We consider an effective action of a compact (n ? 1)-torus on a smooth 2n-manifold with isolated fixed points. We prove that under certain conditions the orbit space is a closed topological manifold. In particular, this holds for certain torus actions with disconnected stabilizers. There is a filtration of the orbit manifold by orbit dimensions. The subset of orbits of dimensions less than n ? 1 has a specific topology, which is axiomatized in the notion of a sponge. In many cases the original manifold can be recovered from its orbit manifold, the sponge, and the weights of tangent representations at fixed points. We elaborate on the introduced notions using specific examples: the Grassmann manifold G4,2, the complete flag manifold F3, and quasitoric manifolds with an induced action of a subtorus of complexity 1.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a compact Riemannian manifold whose boundary is endowed with a Riemannian flow. Under a suitable curvature assumption depending on the O’Neill tensor of the flow, we prove that any solution of the basic Dirac equation is the restriction of a parallel spinor field defined on the whole manifold. As a consequence, we show that the flow is a local product. In particular, in the case where solutions of the basic Dirac equation are given by basic Killing spinors, we characterize the geometry of the manifold and the flow.  相似文献

We formulate a geometric nonlinear theory of the mechanics of accretion. In this theory, the material manifold of an accreting body is represented by a time-dependent Riemannian manifold with a time-independent metric that at each point depends on the state of deformation at that point at its time of attachment to the body, and on the way the new material is added to the body. We study the incompatibilities induced by accretion through the analysis of the material metric and its curvature in relation to the foliated structure of the accreted body. Balance laws are discussed and the initial boundary value problem of accretion is formulated. The particular cases where the growth surface is either fixed or traction-free are studied and some analytical results are provided. We numerically solve several accretion problems and calculate the residual stresses in nonlinear elastic bodies induced from accretion.

In this short note, we announce a regularity theorem for the Kähler–Ricci flow on a compact Fano manifold (Kähler manifold with positive first Chern class) and its application to the limiting behavior of the Kähler–Ricci flow on Fano 3-manifolds. Moreover, we also present a partial C0 estimate of the Kähler–Ricci flow under the regularity assumption, which extends previous works on Kähler–Einstein metrics and shrinking Kähler–Ricci solitons. The detailed proof will appear elsewhere.  相似文献

Suppose \((M,g_0)\) is a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary of dimension \(n\ge 3\). Using the Yamabe flow, we obtain estimate for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian of \(g_0\) with negative scalar curvature in terms of the Yamabe metric in its conformal class. On the other hand, we prove that the first eigenvalue of some geometric operators on a compact Riemannian manifold is nondecreasing along the unnormalized Yamabe flow under suitable curvature assumption. Similar results are obtained for manifolds with boundary and for CR manifold.  相似文献

We introduce a geometric evolution equation of hyperbolic type, which governs the evolution of a hypersurface moving in the direction of its mean curvature vector. The flow stems from a geometrically natural action containing kinetic and internal energy terms. As the mean curvature of the hypersurface is the main driving factor, we refer to this model as the hyperbolic mean curvature flow (HMCF). The case that the initial velocity field is normal to the hypersurface is of particular interest: this property is preserved during the evolution and gives rise to a comparatively simpler evolution equation. We also consider the case where the manifold can be viewed as a graph over a fixed manifold. Our main results are as follows. First, we derive several balance laws satisfied by the hypersurface during the evolution. Second, we establish that the initial-value problem is locally well-posed in Sobolev spaces; this is achieved by exhibiting a convexity property satisfied by the energy density which is naturally associated with the flow. Third, we provide some criteria ensuring that the flow will blow-up in finite time. Fourth, in the case of graphs, we introduce a concept of weak solutions suitably restricted by an entropy inequality, and we prove that a classical solution is unique in the larger class of entropy solutions. In the special case of one-dimensional graphs, a global-in-time existence result is established.  相似文献

Triple collisions in the isosceles three body problem with small mass ratio   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We use a slightly modified version of McGehee's transformation to study the triple collisions of the isosceles three body problem in a way that allows us to let the mass ratio go to zero. We study the limiting case and show that the collision manifold changes topologically, which affects the behaviour of near collision orbits. We also obtain new information about the flow on the collision manifold when the mass ratio is small.  相似文献

The rotation measure is an asymptotic dynamical invariant assigned to a typical point of a flow in a fiber bundle over a hyperbolic manifold. The total mass of the rotation measure is the average speed of the orbit and its “direction” is the ergodic invariant probability measure of the hyperbolic geodesic flow which best captures the asymptotic dynamics of the given point. The rotation measure exists almost everywhere and is constant for an ergodic measure of the given flow and so it may be viewed as assigning an ergodic measure of the geodesic flow to one of the given flow. It generalizes the usual notion of homology rotation vector by encoding homotopy information.  相似文献
