Principal kinetic data are presented for ethylene homopolymerization and ethylene/1‐hexene copolymerization reactions with two types of chromium oxide catalyst. The reaction rate of the homopolymerization reaction is first order with respect to ethylene concentration (both for gas‐phase and slurry reactions); its effective activation energy is 10.2 kcal/mol (42.8 kJ/mol). The r1 value for ethylene/1‐hexene copolymerization reactions with the catalysts is ~30, which places these catalysts in terms of efficiency of α‐olefin copolymerization with ethylene between metallocene catalysts (r1 ~ 20) and Ti‐based Ziegler‐Natta catalysts (r1 in the 80–120 range). GPC, DSC, and Crystaf data for ethylene/1‐hexene copolymers of different compositions produced with the catalysts show that the reaction products have broad molecular weight and compositional distributions. A combination of kinetic data and structural data for the copolymers provided detailed information about the frequency of chain transfer reactions for several types of active centers present in the catalysts, their copolymerization efficiency, and stability. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ethylene, propylene homopolymerizations, and ethylene/propylene copolymerization catalyzed with rac‐Et(Ind)2ZrCl2/modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) were conducted under the same conditions for different duration ranging from 2.5 to 30 min, and quenched with 2‐thiophenecarbonyl chloride to label a 2‐thiophenecarbonyl on each propagation chain end. The change of active center ratio ([C*]/[Zr]) with polymerization time in each polymerization system was determined. Changes of polymerization rate, molecular weight, isotacticity (for propylene homopolymerization) and copolymer composition with time were also studied. [C*]/[Zr] strongly depended on type of monomer, with the propylene homopolymerization system presented much lower [C*]/[Zr] (ca. 25%) than the ethylene homopolymerization and ethylene–propylene copolymerization systems. In the copolymerization system, [C*]/[Zr] increased continuously in the reaction process until a maximum value of 98.7% was reached, which was much higher than the maximum [C*]/[Zr] of ethylene homopolymerization (ca. 70%). The chain propagation rate constant (kp) of propylene polymerization is very close to that of ethylene polymerization, but the propylene insertion rate constant is much smaller than the ethylene insertion rate constant in the copolymerization system, meaning that the active centers in the homopolymerization system are different from those in the copolymerization system. Ethylene insertion rate constant in the copolymerization system was much higher than that in the ethylene homopolymerization in the first 10 min of reaction. A mechanistic model was proposed to explain the observed activation of ethylene polymerization by propylene addition. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A simple mathematic model for the free radical polymerization of chain transfer monomers containing both polymerizable vinyl groups and telogen groups was proposed. The molecular architecture of the obtained polymer can be prognosticated according to the developed model, which was validated experimentally by homopolymerization of 4‐vinyl benzyl thiol (VBT) and its copolymerization with styrene. The chain transfer constant (CT) of telogen group in a chain transfer monomer is considered to play an important role to determine the architecture of obtained polymer according to the proposed model, either in homopolymerization or copolymerization. A highly branched polymer will be formed when the CT value is around unity, while a linear polymer with a certain extent of side chains will be obtained when the CT value is much bigger or smaller than unity. The CT of VBT was determined to be around 15 by using the developed model and 1H NMR monitored experiments. The obtained poly(VBT) and its copolymers were substantiated to be mainly consisted of linear main chain with side branching chains, which is in agreement with the anticipation from the developed model. The glass transition temperature, number average molecular weight, and its distribution of those obtained polymer were primarily investigated. This model is hopefully to be used as a strategy to select appropriate chain transfer monomers for preparing hyperbranched polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article discusses a chemical route to prepare new ethylene/propylene copolymers (EP) containing a terminal reactive group, such as ?‐CH3 and OH. The chemistry involves metallocene‐mediated ethylene/propylene copolymerization in the presence of a consecutive chain transfer agent—a mixture of hydrogen and styrene derivatives carrying a CH3 (p‐MS) or a silane‐protected OH (St‐OSi). The major challenge is to find suitable reaction conditions that can simultaneously carry out effective ethylene/propylene copolymerization and incorporation of the styrenic molecule (St‐f) at the polymer chain end, in other words, altering the St‐f incorporation mode from copolymerization to chain transfer. A systematic study was conducted to examine several metallocene catalyst systems and reaction conditions. Both [(C5Me4)SiMe2N(t‐Bu)]TiCl2 and rac‐Et(Ind)2ZrCl2, under certain H2 pressures, were found to be suitable catalyst systems to perform the combined task. A broad range of St‐f terminated EP copolymers (EP‐t‐p‐MS and EP‐t‐St‐OH), with various compositions and molecular weights, have been prepared with polymer molecular weight inversely proportional to the molar ratio of [St‐f]/[monomer]. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Ziegler–Natta system Cp*TiMe3/B(C6F5)3 catalyzed the copolymerization of ethylene and 1‐hexene in toluene into materials that were characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The effects of temperature and ethylene/1‐hexene and olefin/catalyst ratios on catalyst activities and copolymer molecular weights and molecular weight distributions were studied; the ethylene proportions varied from less than 5% to 85% or more. In addition, significant amounts of 1‐hexene were incorporated into the growing polymer chain in a 2,1‐fashion; consequently, conventional 13C NMR analytical methodologies for deducing monomer proportions and dispersions and polymer microstructures, based on a low 1,2‐incorporation of α‐olefin, did not work very well. A soluble (in toluene at ambient temperature) but very high molecular weight (weight‐average molecular weight ∼ 8 × 105, weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight = 1.8) rubbery copolymer that formed at −78 °C exhibited a predominantly alternating microstructure. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The synthesis of long‐chain branched polyethylene includes the generation of vinyl‐terminated polyethylene macromonomers and the copolymerization of these macromonomers with ethylene. Four new bridged cyclopentadienyl indenyl (fluorenyl) zirconocene complexes 1a–b, 2a–b were prepared and showed high activities for ethylene homopolymerization upon the activation of methylaluminoxane. The steric bulk of bridged substituent has a profound effect on the catalytic activity as well as on the molecular weight of resulting polyethylene. Complex 1b showed the highest activity of up to 5.32 × 106 g PE/(mol Zr h) for ethylene homopolymerization at 70 °C, which was higher than that of Cp2ZrCl2. The polyethylenes produced with complexes 1a–d/MAO are mostly vinyl‐terminated, possess low molecular weight and fit as macromonomers. The (p‐MePh)2C‐bridged cyclopentadienyl indenyl zirconocene complex 1a could produce polyethylene macromonomer with selectivity for the vinyl‐terminal as high as 94.9%. A series of novel nonmetallocene catalysts with phenoxy‐imine ligands was synthesized by the treatment of phthaldialdehyde, substituted phenol with TiCl4, ZrCl4, and YCl3 in THF. The structures and properties of the catalysts were characterized by 1H NMR and elemental analysis. These catalysts were used for copolymerization of ethylene with acrylonitrile after activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO). The effects of copolymerization temperature, Al/M (M = Ti, Zr, and Y) ratio in mole, concentrations of catalyst and comonomer on the polymerization behaviors were investigated in detail. These results revealed that these catalysts were favorable for copolymerization of ethylene with acrylonitrile. Cat. 3 was the most favorable one for the copolymerization of ethylene with acrylonitrile, and the catalytic activity was up to 2.19 × 104 g PE/mol.Ti.h under the conditions: polymerization temperature of 50 °C, Al/Ti molar ratio of 300, catalyst concentration of 1.0 × 10–4 mol/L, and toluene as solvent. The resultant polymer was characterized by FTIR, cross‐polarization magic angle spinning, 13C NMR, WAXD, GPC, and DSC. The results confirmed that the obtained copolymer featured high‐weight–average molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution about 1.61–1.95, and high‐acrylonitrile incorporation up to 2.29 mol %. Melting temperature of the copolymer depended on the content of acrylonitrile incorporation within the copolymer chain. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

During the homo- and copolymerization with butyl acrylate of styrenic macromers of polyoxyethylene, the molecular weight of the polymer is found to increase continuously because of transfer to the polymer. The polymerization of butyl acrylate in the presence of non-polymerizable model compounds of the macromers has been studied. It is shown that the transfer involves chiefly the benzylic protons; the transfer constant is 2.1 × 10–3, i.e. larger than that corresponding to the ethylene oxide moiety, which is about 3 × 10−4. A kinetic study shows that the efficiency of the transfer radicals for reinitiation is about 0.75.  相似文献

Chain transfer reactions widely exist in the free radical polymerization and controlled radical polymerization, which can significantly influence polymer molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. In this work, the chain transfer reactions in modeling the reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) solution copolymerization are included and the effects of chain transfer rate constant, monomer concentration, and comonomer ratio on the polymerization kinetics and polymer molecular weight development are investigated. The model is verified with the experimental RAFT solution copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate, with good agreements achieved. This work has demonstrated that the chain transfer reactions to monomer and solvent can have significant impacts on the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) and dispersity (Ð).  相似文献

The effects of the type and concentration of comonomers 1-hexene and 1-octene in the copolymerization of ethylene were investigated using pre polymerized Ziegler-Natta (catalyst a) and without pre polymerized (catalyst b) catalysts in the presence of hydrogen as a chain transfer agent. The properties of produced polymers were characterized by a set of techniques: (SEM), (EDX), (DSC), (GPC). TIBA and DEAC were used as co catalysts. The results of microscopic and SEM images showed the morphology and structure of catalysts (a) and (b) and the obtained spherical polymers. In the presence of 1-hexene, activity of catalyst (a) was at its maximum. The comonomer 1-octene at 32 mmol presented its activity (1.7 × 103 g polymer/(g cat.h)) and after that, the activities decreased. Copolymerization of ethylene and 1-hexene by catalyst (b) showed higher activity (1.6 × 103 g polymer/ polymer/(g cat.h)) at 40 mmol concentration of 1-hexene in comparison to catalyst (a).  相似文献

A novel SalenCoIII (2,4‐dinitrophenoxy) (Salen = N,N'‐bis(3,5‐di‐tert‐butylsalicylidene)‐1,2‐cyclohexanediamino) and 1,10‐phenanthroline monohydrate catalyst system was designed and employed for the copolymerization of CO2 and propylene oxide (PO). The perfectly alternating copolymerization of CO2 and PO proceeds effectively under middle temperature and pressure to yield poly(propylene carbonate) with a high yield and a high number average molecular weight of polymer. The structure of polymer was characterized by the IR and NMR measurements. The perfectly alternating copolymer was confirmed. The MALDI‐TOF spectrum insinuates that the copolymerization of CO2 and PO was initiated by H2O. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The cationic homopolymerization and copolymerization of L,L ‐lactide and ε‐caprolactone in the presence of alcohol have been studied. The rate of homopolymerization of ε‐caprolactone is slightly higher than that of L,L ‐lactide. In the copolymerization, the reverse order of reactivities has been observed, and L,L ‐lactide is preferentially incorporated into the copolymer. Both the homopolymerization and copolymerization proceed by an activated monomer mechanism, and the molecular weights and dispersities are controlled {number‐average degree of polymerization = ([M]0 ? [M]t)/[I]0, where [M]0 is the initial monomer concentration, [M]t is the monomer concentration at time t, and [I]0 is the initial initiator concentration; weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight ~1.1–1.3}. An analysis of 13C NMR spectra of the copolymers indicates that transesterification is slow in comparison with propagation, and the microstructure of the copolymers is governed by the relative reactivity of the comonomers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two new catalyst systems, sulfur–diethylzinc and 98% hydrogen peroxide–diethylzinc, have been investigated for polymerizing propylene oxide. The sulfur–diethylzinc catalyst system has a broad range of sulfur/zinc atomic ratio for polymerizing propylene oxide heterogeneously to high molecular weight materials in high yields. The highest polymer yield is obtained at the sulfur/zinc atomic ratio of 3–3.5. Like the water–diethylzinc system, the hydrogen peroxide–diethylzinc system has a narrow range of hydrogen peroxide/diethylzinc molar ratio in the vicinity of 0.57 for optimum polymer yield. Crystallinity measurements by x-ray diffraction of a few polymers prepared with these three catalyst systems showed that they are fairly similar in the extent of their crystallinity. A plot of the per cent of polymer insoluble in acetone against inherent viscosity of the original polymer also showed that the polymers prepared with sulfur–diethylzinc and hydrogen peroxide–diethylzinc catalyst systems have similar amounts of crystallinity. Data are given for the polymerizability of ethylene oxide, 1,2-butene oxide, styrene oxide, propylene sulfide, 1,2-butene sulfide, and a vulcanizable copolymer of propylene oxide and allyl glycidyl ether with the sulfur–diethylzinc catalyst system. The polymers from the olefin sulfides had lower inherent viscosities than the polymers from the corresponding olefin oxides. Aging of the sulfur–diethylzinc catalyst (S/Zn atomic ratio = 3.5) improved the yield of poly(propylene oxide). The yield was essentially unchanged when propylene oxide was polymerized in six different solvents. The formation of C2H5SxZnSC2H5 and C2H5SxZnSyC2H5 (x and y are integers between 2 and 8) and possibly C2H5SxZnC2H5 as the catalytically active species is postulated during the reaction of sulfur and diethylzinc.  相似文献

A comparison of BF3 ·Bu2O and Cl-N2PF6 as catalysts for cationic homopolymerization and copolymerization of trioxane has been made by employing high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. While no substantial difference was detected for the homopolymerization, two important differences were observed for the copolymerization with ethylene oxide; viz., 1) with Cl-NPF6 there is a lower build-up of formaldehyde concentration; 2) with Cl[sbnd]N2PF6, a lesser amount of cyclic compounds containing ethylene oxide units is formed (e.g., 1,3-dioxolane). Both observations suggest that depolymerization occurs to a lesser extent with the cl-N2PF6 catalyst.  相似文献

Palladium phosphanesulfonate [R2P(C6H4o‐SO3)PdMeL] catalysts permit the copolymerization of an exceptional large number of functional olefins with ethylene. However, these catalysts usually have reduced activity. We here have conducted a systematic study on the influence of the phosphane substituent, R, on activity and molecular weight. Phosphanes with strong σ‐donating character are shown to lead to the most active catalysts. Thus, the catalyst based on phosphane bis‐tert‐butyl‐phosphanyl‐benzenesulfonic acid (R=tBu) exhibits unprecedented high activity, rapidly polymerizing ethylene at room temperature to yield a linear polymer of high molecular weight (Mw=116 000 g mol?1). The influence of the R group on the catalyst ability to incorporate methyl acrylate is also investigated.  相似文献

The cyclohexyl‐substituted salicylaldiminato–Ni(II) complex [O? (3‐C6H11)(5‐CH3)C6H2CH?N‐2,6‐C6H3iPr2]Ni(PPh3)(Ph) ( 4 ) has been synthesized and characterized with 1H NMR and X‐ray structure analysis. In the presence of phosphine scavengers such as bis(1,5‐cyclooctadiene)nickel(0) [Ni(COD)2], triisobutylaluminum (TIBA), and triethylaluminum (TEA), 4 is an active catalyst for ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with the polar monomers tert‐butyl‐10‐undecenoate, methyl‐10‐undecenoate, and 4‐penten‐1‐ol under mild conditions. The polymerization parameters affecting the catalytic activity and viscosity‐average molecular weight of polyethylene, such as the temperature, time, ethylene pressure, and catalyst concentration, are discussed. A polymerization activity of 3.62 × 105 g of PE (mol of Ni h)?1 and a weight‐average molecular weight of polyethylene of 5.73 × 104 g.mol?1 have been found for 10 μmol of 4 and a Ni(COD)2/ 4 ratio of 3 in a 30‐mL toluene solution at 45 °C and 12 × 105 Pa of ethylene for 20 min. The polydispersity index of the resulting polyethylene is about 2.04. After the addition of tetrahydrofuran and Et2O to the reaction system, 4 exhibits still high activity for ethylene polymerization. Methyl‐10‐undecenoate (0.65 mol %), 0.74 mol % tert‐butyl‐10‐undecenoate, and 0.98 mol % 4‐penten‐1‐ol have been incorporated into the polymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer brush with poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and polystyrene as the side chain was successfully prepared by a combination of anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The glycidol was first protected by ethyl vinyl ether to form 2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether and then copolymerized with ethylene oxide by the initiation of a mixture of diphenylmethylpotassium and triethylene glycol to give the well‐defined polymer poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐2,3‐epoxypropyl‐1‐ethoxyethyl ether); the latter was hydrolyzed under acidic conditions, and then the recovered copolymer of ethylene oxide and glycidol {poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐glycidol) [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)]} with multiple pending hydroxymethyl groups was esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to produce the macro‐ATRP initiator [poly(EO‐co‐Gly)(ATRP). The latter was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene to form the amphiphilic copolymer brushes. The object products and intermediates were characterized with 1H NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, and size exclusion chromatography in detail. In all cases, the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer brushes was rather narrow (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.2), and the linear dependence of ln[M0]/[M] (where [M0] is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration at a certain time) on time demonstrated that the styrene polymerization was well controlled. This method has universal significance for the preparation of copolymer brushes with hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An investigation of the polymer particle growth characteristics and polymer molecular weight and composition distributions in ethylene homopolymerization and ethylene/1‐hexene copolymerization has been carried out with a catalyst comprising a zirconocene and methylaluminoxane immobilized on a silica support. The presence of 1‐hexene leads to higher productivity and easier fragmentation of the support during particle growth. Crystallization analysis fractionation and gel permeation chromatography analysis of ethylene/1‐hexene copolymers prepared at different polymerization times reveals a broadening of the chemical composition distribution with increasing polymerization time as a result of the gradual formation of a relatively high‐molecular‐weight, ethylene‐rich fraction. The results are indicative of significant monomer diffusion effects in both homopolymerization and copolymerization. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The γ-ray-induced copolymerization of ethylene and vinyl chloride with the use of liquid carbon dioxide as a solvent was studied under a total pressure of 400 kg/cm2, with a dose rate of 2.5 × 104 rad/hr at 30°C. A rubberlike, sticky polymer is obtained when the molar concentration of vinyl chloride is less than 30% in the monomer mixture, and the polymer is a white powder at higher concentrations of vinyl chloride. Infrared, x-ray, and differential thermal analyses confirm that the polymerization products are noncrystalline, true random copolymers. The rate of copolymerization decreases markedly when a small amount of vinyl chloride is added to ethylene monomer. In the range of vinyl chloride concentration higher than 5%, however, the rate and the molecular weight of copolymer increase with increasing concentration of vinyl chloride. It has been concluded from kinetic considerations based on these results that the rate of initiation increases proportionally with the concentration of vinyl chloride. Further, the growing chain radicals are shown to be deactivated by the cross-termination reaction between the radicals with terminal unit of ethylene and vinyl chloride, and no transfer reaction occurs.  相似文献
