Silica nanoparticles (NSiO2) are modified with mixed polymer brushes derived from a block copolymer precursor, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-b-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) with short middle segment of PGMA, through one step ??grafting-onto?? approach. The block polymer precursors are prepared via reversible addition?Cfragmentation chain transfer-based polymerization of methyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, and tert-butyl methacrylate. The grafting is achieved by the reaction of epoxy group in short PGMA segment with silanol functionality of silica. After hydrolysis of poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) segment, amphiphilic NSiO2 with ??V-shaped?? polymer brushes possessing exact 1:1 molar ratio of different arms were prepared. The functionalized particles self-assemble at oil/water interfaces to form stable large droplets with average diameter ranging from 0.15?±?0.06 to 2.6?±?0.75?mm. The amphiphilicity of the particles can be finely tuned by changing the relative lengths of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(methacrylic acid) segments, resulting in different assembly behavior. The method may serve as a general way to control the surface property of the particles.  相似文献

[Poly(2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)]-b-poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-[poly(2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)] (M(n)=45,000; 20K-5K-20K; PDI = 1.2) block copolymer surfactant stabilized amphiphilic gold-silver alloy nanoparticles (Au-Ag(PDMA-b-PMMA-b-PDMA)) has been synthesized in both water and in organic medium. The block copolymer stabilized pre-made alloy nanoparticles were successfully dispersed in hydrophobic poly(methyl methacrylate) homopolymer matrix (PMMA) of molecular weight 30,000. The successful synthesis of alloy nanoparticles was accessed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Energy Dispersed X-ray (EDX), and UV-visible spectrophotometric analysis. The surface functionality of the nanoparticles was confirmed by quantitative determining the grafting density of polymer chain around the nanoparticle surface using combination of thermo gravimetric (TGA) and TEM analysis. The hydrodynamic diameter of the alloy particles including the polymer chains was obtained from dynamic light scattering measurement (DLS). The mechanism of synthesis of high concentration of Au-Ag alloy particles from HAuCl(4) and AgNO(3) (in presence of Cl(-) from reduction of gold salt) metal particles precursors and the successful preparation of poly(methyl methacrylate)/gold-silver nanocomposite films have been discussed.  相似文献

Layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte self-assembly, a common method for preparing high-quality ultra-thin films, was employed to direct the self-assembly behavior of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)(PS-b-PMMA) block copolymer for the first time. Differing from the previous neutral polymer brushes anchored to silicon substrates via chemical modification, polyelectrolyte multilayers(PEMs) were anchored by electrostatic interaction and provided a stable, smooth, and neutral interface. In the present study, PS-b-PMMA was deposited on poly(acrylamide hydrochloride)/poly(acrylic acid)(PAH/PAA) PEMs prepared by layer-by-layer self-assembly to successfully yield vertical nanodomains after thermal annealing. Seven layered PEMs revealed an excellent, smooth surface, with a low roughness of 0.6 nm. The periodic structure with interlamellar spacing of 47 nm was determined by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering(GISAXS). The morphology of the PS-b-PMMA nanodomains depended on the polyanion-to-polycation concentration ratio, which is related to the interaction between the block copolymer and the substrate. Our results demonstrate that layer-by-layer self-assembly is a helpful method for the phase separation of block polymers and the fabrication of vertical, ordered nanodomains.  相似文献

This article reports on the synthesis of thermosensitive polymer brushes on silica nanoparticles by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and the study of thermo-induced phase transitions in water. Silica nanoparticles were prepared by the St?ber process and the surface was functionalized by an ATRP initiator. Surface-initiated ATRPs of methoxydi(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (DEGMMA) and methoxytri(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (TEGMMA) were carried out in THF at 40 degrees C in the presence of a free initiator, benzyl 2-bromoisobutyrate. The polymerizations were monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The hairy hybrid nanoparticles were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy, and the thermoresponsive properties were investigated by variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering. The cloud points of free poly(DEGMMA) and poly(TEGMMA) in water were around 25 and 48 degrees C, respectively. The thermo-induced phase transitions of polymer brushes on silica nanoparticles began at a lower temperature and continued over a broader range (4-10 degrees C) than those of free polymers in water (< 2 degrees C).  相似文献

The synthesis of polymer‐matrix‐compatible amphiphilic gold (Au) nanoparticles with well‐defined triblock polymer poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] and diblock polymers poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate], polystyrene‐b‐poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate], and poly(t‐butyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] in water and in aqueous tetrahydrofuran (tetrahydrofuran/H2O = 20:1 v/v) at room temperature is reported. All these amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized with atom transfer radical polymerization. The variations of the position of the plasmon resonance band and the core diameter of such block copolymer functionalized Au particles with the variation of the surface functionality, solvent, and molecular weight of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts of the block copolymers were systematically studied. Different types of polymer–Au nanocomposite films [poly(methyl methacrylate)–Au, poly(t‐butyl methacrylate)–Au, polystyrene–Au, poly(vinyl alcohol)–Au, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)–Au] were prepared through the blending of appropriate functionalized Au nanoparticles with the respective polymer matrices {e.g., blending poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate)‐b‐poly[2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate‐stabilized Au with the poly(methyl methacrylate)matrix only}. The compatibility of specific block copolymer modified Au nanoparticles with a specific homopolymer matrix was determined by a combination of ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry analyses. The facile formation of polymer–Au nanocomposites with a specific block copolymer stabilized Au particle was attributed to the good compatibility of block copolymer coated Au particles with a specific polymer matrix. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Brush-like block copolymers with poly(t-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) as side arms, PBMA-b-PNIPAAm, were designed and synthesized via a simple free radical polymerization route. The chemical structure and molecular weight of these polymer brushes were characterized and determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The micellar formation by these polymer brushes in aqueous solutions were detected by a surface tension technique, and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) ranged from 1.53 to 8.06 mg L−1. The morphology and geometry of polymer micelles were investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The polymer micelles assume the regularly-spherical core-shell structure with well-dispersed individual nanoparticles, and the particle size was in the range from 36 to 93 nm. The PNIPAAm segments exhibited a thermoreversible phase transition, so the resulting block polymer brushes were temperature-sensitive and the low critical solution temperature (LCST) was determined by UV-vis spectrometer at about 28.82–29.40°C. The characteristic parameters of the polymer micelles such as CMC, micellar size and LCST values were affected by their compositional ratios and the length of hydrophilic or hydrophobic chains. The evaluation for caffeine drug release behavior of the block polymer micelles demonstrated that the self-assembled micelles exhibited thermal-triggered properties in controlled drug release.  相似文献

A combined theoretical and experimental investigation of conjugated rod-coil block copolymer brushes is reported. The theoretical study for the surface structures of rod-coil block copolymer brushes was established based on the simulation method of dissipative particle dynamics. The effects of solvent stimuli, grafting density, and rod-coil block ratio of the polymer brushes on the surface structures were examined. The rod blocks of polymer brushes were found to be well-dispersed on the surface in their good solvents. On the other hand, aggregative domains of the rod blocks were formed in their poor solvents with the conformations of isolated islands or worm-like structures depending on the grafting density of the polymer brushes. The aggregative domains tend to stay on top of the coil blocks for small rod-to-coil block ratio. However, the submergence of the aggregative domains into the coil blocks is thermodynamically preferred for large enough rod-to-coil block ratio. New multifunctional amphiphilic rod-coil block copolymers, poly-[2,7-(9,9-di-n-hexylfluorene)]-block-poly-[poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate]-block-poly-[3(tripropoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (PF-b-PPEGMA-b-PPOPS), with two different block ratios were synthesized and used to prepare the corresponding polymer brushes via the grafting- method. The effects of stimuli factors on the surface structures characterized by the atomic force microscopy images were consistent with the theoretical results. Furthermore, the photophysical properties of PF-b-PPEGMA-b-PPOPS brushes were significantly varied by the solvent stimuli. The emission peaks originated from the aggregation and/or excimer formation of PF blocks were observed after methanol treatment. The photoluminescence intensity and its efficiency were well correlated to the surface structure and the methanol content in mixed solvents. Our study demonstrates how the surface structures and photophysical properties of rod-coil block copolymer brushes response to environmental stimuli.  相似文献

Acrylic polymers, including poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate), poly( N,N'-dimethyaminoethyl methacrylate), and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) were grafted from flat nickel and copper surfaces through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). For the nickel system, there was a linear relationship between polymer layer thickness and monomer conversion or molecular weight of "free" polymers. The thickness of the polymer brush films was greater than 80 nm after 6 h of reaction time. The grafting density was estimated to be 0.40 chains/nm2. The "living" chain ends of grafted polymers were still active and initiated the growth of a second block of polymer. Block copolymer brushes with different block sequences were successfully prepared. The experimental surface chemical compositions as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy agreed very well with their theoretical values. Water contact angle measurements further confirmed the successful grafting of polymers from nickel and copper surfaces. The surface morphologies of all samples were studied by atomic force microscopy. This study provided a novel approach to prepare stable functional polymer coatings on reactive metal surfaces.  相似文献

This report describes the remarkably rapid synthesis of polymer brushes under mild conditions (50 degrees C) using surface-initiated polymerization. The highly active atom transfer radical polymerization catalyst Cu(I)-1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane allows synthesis of 100 nm thick poly(tert-butyl acrylate) brushes from initiator-modified Au surfaces in just 5 min. Using the same catalyst, polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate yielded 100 nm thick films in 10 and 60 min, respectively. Such growth rates are an order of magnitude greater than those for traditional free-radical polymerizations initiated from surfaces. These polymerizations also retain some features of controlled radical polymerizations, such as the ability to form block copolymer brushes.  相似文献

The site‐specific attachment of nanoparticles is of interest for biomaterials or biosensor applications. Polymer brushes can be used to regulate this adsorption, so the conditions for selective adsorption of phosphonate‐functionalized nanoparticles onto micropatterned polymer brushes with different functional groups are optimized. By choosing the strong polyelectrolytes poly(3‐sulfopropyl methacrylate), poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate), and poly[2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium chloride], it is possible to direct the adsorption of nanoparticles to specific regions of the patterned substrates. A pH‐dependent adsorption can be achieved by using the polycarboxylate brush poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) as substrate coating. On PMAA brushes, the nanoparticles switch from attachment to the brush regions to attachment to the grooves of a patterned substrate on changing the pH from 3 to 7. In this manner, patterned substrates are realized that assemble nanoparticles in pattern grooves, in polymer brush areas, or substrates that resist the deposition of the nanoparticles. The nanoparticle deposition can be directed in a pH‐dependent manner on a weak polyelectrolyte, or is solely charge‐dependent on strong polyelectrolytes. These results are correlated with surface potential measurements and show that an optical trap is a versatile method to directly probe interactions between nanoparticles and polymer brushes. A model for these interactions is proposed based on the optical trap measurements.  相似文献

In this work, silica particles were firstly modified with poly(methyl methacrylate) and then converted to poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA). The PMAA brushes with different molecular weight were used to modify the seed particles and learn the formation process of the raspberry-like particles. Silica particles with core–shell structure were obtained when the silica seed particles were modified only with carboxyl functional groups. With the increase of the molecular weight of PMAA brushes, uniform raspberry-like silica particles appeared gradually. But when the molecular weight of PMAA brushes was above 136,100, the morphologies became complicated. The electric charge of the polymer brushes was also found to have influence on the final morphologies of the particles. The contact angle (CA) tests showed that films composed of nanoparticles with uniform raspberry-like structures had an average CA of 157.2°, which indicated great prospects in the super-hydrophobic applications.  相似文献

Synthesis of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes from the inside of silica capillaries by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) yields unique stationary phases for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). Although PHEMA brushes have only a small effect on the separation of a set of phenols and anilines, derivatization of PHEMA with ethylenediamine (en) allows baseline resolution of several anilines that co-elute from bare silica capillaries. Derivatization of PHEMA with octanoyl chloride (C8-PHEMA films) affords even better resolution in the separation of a series of phenols and anilines. Increasing the thickness of C8-PHEMA coatings by a factor of 2 enhances resolution for several solute pairs, presumably because of an increase in the effective stationary phase to mobile phase volume ratio. Thus, this work demonstrates that thick polymer brushes provide a tunable stationary phase with a much larger phase ratio than is available from monolayer wall coatings. Through appropriate choice of derivatizing reagents, these polymer brushes should allow separation of a wide range of neutral molecules as well as compounds with similar electrophoretic mobilities.  相似文献

Well‐defined central functionalized asymmetric triblock copolymers (CFABC) were designed as a new type of polymer‐brush surface modifier with a short central functionalized block that could form chemical bonds with a suitable substrate surface. A combination of sequential living anionic polymerization and polymer modification reactions was used for the synthesis of two CFABCs: polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐hydroxystyrene)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (3) and polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐urethanopropyl triethoxysilylstyrene)‐b‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (4). The central block of 3, poly(4‐hydroxystyrene), was synthesized with a protected monomer, p‐[(tert‐butyldimethylsilyl)oxy]styrene, for the polymerization step, and this synthesis was followed by the hydrolysis of the silyl protecting group. To obtain polymer 4, the phenol functionality in 3 was converted to triethoxysilyl groups by a quantitative reaction with isocyanato propyl triethoxysilane. Gel permeation chromatography and NMR characterization indicated that the block copolymers possessed controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Summary: This work aimed to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles for use in drug encapsulation. The polymer nanoparticles were produced using miniemulsion polymerization technique. Monomer miniemulsion showed moderate stability and polymer average particle size was about 90 nm. PMMA nanoparticles were tested for toxicity in human leukemic cell strain K562 and they did not show any adverse effect on cell viability. Therefore, poly(methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles are suitable to encapsulate antitumor agents.  相似文献

Zinc antimonate nanoparticles consisting of antimony and zinc oxide were surface modified in a methanol solvent medium using triethoxysilane‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating group (i.e.,) 6‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methyl) propionyloxy hexyl triethoxysilane. Successful grafting of ATRP initiator on the surface of nanoparticles was confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis that shows a significant weight loss at around 250–410 °C. Grafting of ATRP initiator onto the surface was further corroborated using Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface‐initiated ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) mediated by a copper complex was carried out with the initiator‐fixed zinc antimonate nanoparticles in the presence of a sacrificial (free) initiator. The polymerization was preceded in a living manner in all examined cases; producing nanoparticles coated with well defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes with molecular weight in the range of 35–48K. Furthermore, PMMA‐grafted zinc antimonate nanoparticles were characterized using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) that exhibit significant weight loss in the temperature range of 300–410 °C confirming the formation of polymer brushes on the surface with the graft density as high as 0.26–0.27 chains/nm2. The improvement in the dispersibility of PMMA‐grafted zinc antimonate nanoparticles was verified using ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The block copolymer brushes grafted from hollow sphere surface via reverse iodine transfer polymerization (RITP) were investigated in this work. A sufficient amount of azo initiator was introduced onto hollow sphere surface firstly. Then the monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA) was polymerized via surface-initiated reverse iodine transfer polymerization (RITP) using azo group modified hollow sphere as initiator. The microstructure of the samples was characterized by FT-IR, (1)H NMR, respectively. Results indicated that the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with end functionality of alkyl iodine group had grafted from hollow sphere surface. TEM observations showed that the average diameter of hollow core was central at 1.3-1.4 μm and the average wall thickness increased from 103 nm to 138 nm and 172 nm after grafting polymerization of MMA and Tb complex, respectively. The closely linear plots of molecular weight (M(n)) versus conversion, linear kinetic plots for the free polymer formed in solution and the ability to extend the chains by sequential addition of monomer indicated that the RITP was a controlled process with a "living" characteristic.  相似文献

We demonstrate the directional alignment of perpendicular‐lamellae domains in fluorinated three‐armed star block polymer (BP) thin films using solvent vapor annealing with shear stress. The control of orientation and alignment was accomplished without any substrate surface modification. Additionally, three‐armed star poly(methyl methacrylate‐block‐styrene) [PMMA‐PS] and poly(octafluoropentyl methacrylate‐block‐styrene) were compared to their linear analogues to examine the impact of fluorine content and star architecture on self‐assembled BP feature sizes and interdomain density profiles. X‐ray reflectometry results indicated that the star BP molecular architecture increased the effective polymer segregation strength and could possibly facilitate reduced polymer domain spacings, which are useful in next‐generation nanolithographic applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel cylindrical polymer brushes consisting of poly(diphenylacetylene) main chain and poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether monomethacrylate) (PPEGMA) side chains were synthesized by the diphenylacetylene macromonomer or side chain initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether monomethacrylate (PEGMA) from an bromo isobutyryl-bearing poly(diphenylacetylene) (poly(BrDPA)) method. The diphenylacetylene macromonomer, namely, DPA-PPEGMA, were prepared by the ATRP of PEGMA from bromo isobutyryl-bearing diphenylacetylene. DPA-PPEGMA was polymerized successfully with WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst to give high molecular weight polymer brushes poly(DPA-PPEGMA). Meanwhile, polymer brushes (PDPA-g-PPEGMA) were obtained by ATRP of PEGMA from poly(BrDPA). The molecular weight of the side chains of PPEGMA could be controlled simply by modulating the ATRP time. The macromonomer and polymer brushes are soluble in nonpolar solvents such as toluene and chloroform. The polymers of poly(BrDPA) and poly(DPA-PPEGMA) absorb in the longer wavelength region, with two peaks at around 370 and 414 nm. The polymers are thermally stable and exhibit double crystallization and melting peaks during the cooling and heating scans.  相似文献
