Differential cross-sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured using the Glasgow/Mainz photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator together with the Mainz [48]cm ;SPMOslash; × [64]cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the G?ttingen SENECA recoil detector. The data cover photon energies ranging from [200]MeV to [400]MeV at θLAB γ = 136.2°. Liquid deuterium and hydrogen targets allowed direct comparison of free and quasi-free scattering from the proton. The neutron detection efficiency of the SENECA detector was measured via the reaction p(γ,π+ n). The “free” proton Compton scattering cross-sections extracted from the bound proton data are in reasonable agreement with those for the free proton which gives confidence in the method to extract the differential cross-section for free scattering from quasi-free data. Differential cross-sections on the free neutron have been extracted and the difference of the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron has been determined to be αn - βn = 9.8±3.6(stat)+2.1 -1.1(syst)±2.2(model) in units of [10-4]fm 3. In combination with the polarizability sum αn + βn = 15.2±0.5 deduced from photoabsorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, αn = 12.5±1.8(stat)+1.1 -0.6(syst)±1.1(model) and βn = 2.7±1.8(stat)+0.6 -1.1(syst)±1.1(model) are obtained. The backward spin polarizability of the neutron was determined to be γ(n) π = (58.6±4.0)×10-4 fm 4. Low-energy Compton scattering and the polarizabilities of the proton   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Differential cross-sections for Compton scattering from the proton have been measured at the MAMI tagged photon facility using the TAPS setup. The data cover an angular range of θlab γ = 59°-155° and photon energies ranging from 55 MeV to 165 MeV. Our results are in good agreement with those from previous experiments, but yield higher precision. Using dispersion relations the proton polarizabilities have been determined to be = [11.9±0.5stat.±1.3syst.±0.3mod.] . 10-4 fm 3 and = [1.2±0.7stat.±0.3syst.±0.4mod.)] . 10-4 fm 3. These results confirm the Baldin sum rule which was re-evaluated to be + = [13.8±0.4] . 10-4 fm 3. We can also conclude that there is no significant additional asymptotic contribution to the backward spin polarizability γπ beyond the t-channel π0-exchange. We present in detail a dispersion relation formalism for virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off the proton from threshold into the Δ(1232)-resonance region. Such a formalism can be used as a tool to extract the generalized polarizabilities of the proton from both unpolarized and polarized VCS observables over a larger energy range. We present calculations for existing and forthcoming VCS experiments and demonstrate that the VCS observables in the energy region between pion production threshold and the Δ(1232)-resonance show an enhanced sensitivity to the generalized polarizabilities. The G0 experiment is dedicated to the determination of the strange quark contribution to the electric and magnetic nucleon form factors for a large range of momentum transfers between 0.1 to 1(GeV/c)2 . This information is provided by the asymmetries of cross-sections measured with longitudinally polarized electrons in elastic electron-proton scattering and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering. A set of measurements at two different Q2 will allow the complete separation of the electric and magnetic weak, as well as axial nucleon form factors. This report summarizes the physics case, gives details about the dedicated set-up used, and shows the results of the combination of the strange quark contribution in the electric and magnetic form factors of the protons. The experiment was performed at the Jefferson Laboratory, during years 2003 and 2004, and will be completed after backward-angle measurements in 2006, 2007.  相似文献

The study of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) has shown that electromagnetic gauge invariance requires, to leading order, not only twist-two but additional twist-three contributions. We apply this analysis and, using the Ellis-Furmanski-Petronzio factorization scheme, compute the single- (electron) spin asymmetry arising in the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons with hadrons up to twist-3 accuracy. In order to simplify the kinematics we restrict the actual calculation to pions in the chiral limit. The process is described in terms of the generalized parton distribution functions which we obtain within a bag model framework. Received: 7 November 2001 / Accepted: 25 February 2002  相似文献

The large ˉ(x)/ˉ(x) ratio observed by Fermilab E866/NuSea convincingly demonstrated that the sea is not simply a result of pQCD. Moreover, meson cloud models also failed to explain fully the observed kinematic dependence. The Drell-Yan mechanism offers a unique, selective probe of antiquarks in the nucleon. Fermilab has approved a new Drell-Yan experiment, E906, that will exploit this feature to probe ˉ(x)/ˉ(x) by measuring the ratio of cross-sections for the proton-induced Drell-Yan process on hydrogen to deuterium. When the nucleon is contained in a nucleus, the nucleon's parton distributions should to be modified; although this effect was not seen in the sea quark distributions obtained by Fermilab E772 with Drell-Yan scattering. The upcoming E906 Drell-Yan experiment will provide much more precise measurements over a wider kinematic range in order to guide and challenge the theoretical models.  相似文献

We consider the spin-averaged nucleon forward Compton scattering amplitude in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory including all terms to order . The chiral prediction for the spin-averaged forward Compton scattering amplitude is in good agreement with the data for photon energies110 MeV. We also evaluate the nucleon electric and magnetic Compton polarizabilities to this order and discuss the uncertainties of the various counter terms entering the chiral expansion of these quantities.  相似文献

Hard exclusive production of mesons in deep-inelastic scattering allows one to probe the so-far unknown Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) of the nucleon. The HERMES experiment has measured several different observables in exclusive meson production by scattering the 27.6GeV HERA lepton beam off an internal fixed gaseous target. Recent results on exclusive π +, ρ 0 and pion pair production will be presented.  相似文献

The t-channel contribution to the difference of electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon, (α - β)t, can be quantitatively understood in terms of a σ-meson pole in the complex t-plane of the invariant scattering amplitude A 1(s, t) with properties of the σ-meson as given by the quark-level Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model (NJL). Equivalently, this quantity may be understood in terms of a cut in the complex t-plane where the properties of the σ-meson are taken from the ππ → σ → ππ, γγ → σ → ππ and Nˉ → σ → ππ reactions. This equivalence may be understood as a sum rule where the properties of the σ-meson as predicted by the NJL model are related to the f 0(600) particle observed in the three reactions. In the following, we describe details of the derivation of (α - β)t making use of predictions of the quark-level NJL model for the σ-meson mass. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

We use the relation between Structure Functions (SFs) of nuclei A and nucleons N in order to fomulate a criterion which isolates the QE part out of the total inclusive cross-section. From data points around the QEP we extract the reduced neutron magnetic form factor 〈α n = G M n/μ n G d〉. The latter shows an unexpected decrease up to Q 2 = 10GeV^2, the largest measured.  相似文献

The HAPPEX Collaboration measured parity-violating electron scattering from 4He$(e, e)$and H(e, e) in 2004 and 2005 for Q 2≤0.11GeV^2. Results for the strange-quark contributions to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon from the 2004 data will be reviewed. Preliminary results from the 2005 data, which have significantly greater statistical precision, are G E s = 0.004±0.014stat±0.013syst for Q 2 = 0.0772GeV^2 from the helium data and G E s +0.088G M s = 0.004±0.011stat±0.005syst±0.004FF for Q 2 = 0.1089GeV^2 from the hydrogen data.  相似文献

The Goldberger-Miyazawa-Oehme sum rule is used to extract the pion-nucleon coupling constant from experimental π N information. Chiral perturbation theory is exploited in relating the pionic hydrogen s -wave level shift and width results to the appropriate scattering lengths. The deduced value for the coupling is f 2 = 0.075±0.002 , where the largest source of uncertainty is the determination of the s -wave π- p scattering length from the atomic level shift measurement.  相似文献

The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon are shown to be essentially composed of the nonresonant α p(E 0+) = + 3.2, α n(E 0+) = + 4.1, the t-channel α t p, n = - β t p, n = + 7.6 and the resonant β p, n(P 33(1232)) = + 8.3 contributions (in units of 10-4fm^3). The remaining deviations from the experimental data Δα p = 1.2±0.6, Δβ p = 1.2±0.6, Δα n = 0.8±1.7 and Δβ n = 2.0±1.8 are contributed by a larger number of resonant and nonresonant processes with cancellations between the contributions. This result confirms that dominant contributions to the electric and magnetic polarizabilities may be represented in terms of two-photon coupling to the σ-meson having the predicted mass m σ = 666MeV and two-photon width Γ γγ = 2.6keV.  相似文献

Measurements of azimuthal cross-section asymmetries from deeply virtual Compton scattering on transversely and longitudinally polarized hydrogen and longitudinally polarized deuterium targets at HERMES are reported. By comparing the HERMES results on the transverse target-spin asymmetry with theoretical calculations based on a phenomenological model of generalized parton distributions, a model-dependent constraint on the total angular momentum carried by quarks in the nucleon is obtained.  相似文献

The spin polarizabilities of the nucleon are fundamental structure constants which describe the response of the nucleon spin to an incident polarized photon. The most model-independent way to measure the nucleon spin polarizabilities is the Compton scattering with polarization degrees of freedom. Three Compton scattering asymmetries on the proton were measured in the Δ(1232) region using a polarized incident photon beam and a polarized (or unpolarized) proton target at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). These asymmetries are sensitive to values of the spin polarizabilities. Fits to asymmetry data were performed using a dispersion model calculation, and a separation of all four proton spin-polarizabilities in the multipole basis was achieved. The values of the proton spin polarizabilities are presented.  相似文献

We investigate the strange and flavor-singlet electric and magnetic form factors of the nucleon within the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model. Isospin symmetry is assumed and the symmetry-conserving SU(3) quantization is employed, rotational and strange-quark mass corrections being included. For the experiments G0, A4, and HAPPEX II we predict the quantities G0E + G0M and GsE + GsM. The dependence of the results on the parameters of the model and the treatment of the Yukawa asymptotic behavior of the soliton are investigated.  相似文献

The hyperfine-state population of hydrogen after the bound-β-decay of the neutron directly yields the neutrino left-handedness or a possible right-handed admixture and possible small scalar and tensor contributions to the weak force. Using the through-going beam tube of a high-flux reactor, a background free hydrogen rate of ca. 3s^-1 can be obtained. The detection of the neutral hydrogen atoms and the analysis of the hyperfine states is accomplished by Lamb shift source type quenching and subsequent ionization. The constraints on the neutrino helicity and the scalar and tensor coupling constants of the weak interaction can be improved by a factor of ten.  相似文献

We report a virtual Compton scattering study of the proton at low c.m. energies. We have determined the structure functions P(LL)-P(TT)/epsilon and P(LT), and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha(E)(Q2) and beta(M)(Q2) at momentum transfer Q(2)=0.92 and 1.76 GeV2. The electric GP shows a strong falloff with Q2, and its global behavior does not follow a simple dipole form. The magnetic GP shows a rise and then a falloff; this can be interpreted as the dominance of a long-distance diamagnetic pion cloud at low Q2, compensated at higher Q2 by a paramagnetic contribution from piN intermediate states.  相似文献
