We propose that the hydrogen spectrum in intense magnetic fields will help clarify the mechanisms which govern the SS433 system. In ultra high magnetic fields the standard hydrogen spectrum is superimposed on the Landau levels. There is, however, one deep-lying level in hydrogen at an energy of 50 eV to greater than 200 eV, depending on the magnetic field strength typical of neutron stars in x-ray binaries. When this level manifests itself it will give an indication of the magnetic field strength at the location of the radiating material; it could thus support the infall model SS433.  相似文献

We present optical spectroscopic observations of SS 433 during different precessional and orbital phases. Our 2004, 2007 and 2008 data provide us a good chance to study the variability of the Hα line at different orbital phases for nearly the same disk inclination. The data show that the Hα of SS 433 usually had a symmetric profile between orbital phases 0.25–0.75, while an asymmetric structure with a strong red peak was observed for other orbital phases. We suggest that the orbital variability of Hα emission is connected with accretion flow from the donor star to the accretion disk. In addition, we attribute the dramatic increase of Hα emission during our 2007 observational run, which had a time scale of one day, to the emergence of strong jets.

The present status of lattice measurements with fermions is discussed. Methods are presented which improve the extraction of particle masses using staggered fermions. It is suggested that fermion physics on blocked lattices might show improvement as compared to that on lattices generated with the Wilson action. This idea is tested by comparing results from 183×42 lattices generated atβ=6.2 with results from the 63×14 lattices obtained from them by twice blocking with a 31/2 transformation. Also, a comparison of 83×16 blocked and Wilson axis lattices is made. Finally, three point correlators are used to elucidate the properties of the scalar isoscalar channel. Zeeman mixing of singlet and triplet 2P states of positronium (Ps) atoms, followed by decay back to the ground state, can effectively turn a long-lived triplet atom into a short-lived singlet state, which would seem to preclude laser cooling of Ps in a magnetic field. Here we report experiments which show that, in fact, because of the large splitting of the n=2 states in a high magnetic field (the Paschen-Back regime), the amount of such mixing diminishes approximately exponentially with an increasing magnetic field >0.01 T and is essentially eliminated above ~2 T. Thus, laser cooling of Ps should be feasible at high fields, which will facilitate the production of a Ps Bose-Einstein condensate.  相似文献

There has been disagreement in the literature on whether the hydrogen atom spectrum receives any tree-level correction due to non-commutativity. Here we shall clarify this issue and show that indeed a general argument on the structure of the proton as a non-elementary particle leads to the appearance of such corrections. As a showcase, we evaluate the corrections in a simple non-relativistic quark model with a result in full agreement with the previous one we had obtained by considering the electron moving in the external electric field of proton. The extensive air shower (EAS) muon number spectrum is obtained with increased statistics using the central muon detector of the EAS MSU array, which records muons with energies above 10 GeV. The dependence of the mass composition of primary cosmic rays on the energy is considered. The conclusion is confirmed that for energies from 3 × 1015 eV (the primary energy spectrum knee) up to 1017 eV a change in the composition associated with an increase in the proportion of heavy nuclei occurs; however, after the energy of 1017 eV, the proportion of heavy nuclei begins to decrease and the composition becomes lighter. A comparison with similar data from other experiments is conducted. The existence of an additional component of cosmic rays is confirmed; earlier an indication of its presence was derived from data on the EAS electron number spectrum.  相似文献

The DEAR (DAPhiNE exotic atom research) experiment measured the energy of x rays emitted in the transitions to the ground state of kaonic hydrogen. The measured values for the shift epsilon and the width Gamma of the 1s state due to the K(-)p strong interaction are epsilon(1s)=-193 +/- 37 (stat) +/- 6 (syst) eV and Gamma(1s)=249 +/- 111 (stat) +/- 30 (syst) eV, the most precise values yet obtained. The pattern of the kaonic hydrogen K-series lines, K(alpha), K(beta), and K(gamma), was disentangled for the first time.  相似文献

The Born-Infeld form of the hydrogen atom has a spectrum that can be used to determine the physical viability of the theory, and place an experimentally relevant bound on the single parameter found in it. We compute this spectrum using the relativistic Dirac equation, and a form of the Born-Infeld potential that approximates the self-field corrections of the electron. Using these together, we can establish that if the Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics is to be physically relevant, it must contain a fundamental constant that is well below the original value proposed by Born. This work extends the original Schrödinger spectrum from Carley and Kiessling (2006) [1] for the self-field correction, and shows that using the Dirac equation introduces minor corrections - but also gives access to a range for the fundamental constant that is below that attainable from non-relativistic considerations.  相似文献

The normal vibration frequencies of hydrogen xanthane are calculated on the basis of a mechanical model. The IR absorption spectrum was measured in the range 400–3600 cm–1 for tablets of this substance with KBr and in vaseline and fluorinated oil. The spectrum is interpreted. Millimeter and submillimeter microwave studies are used to predict and assign the FIR rotational-torsional spectrum of hydrogen peroxide. Special attention is given to the strong Q-branch features that have recently been used by Traub and Chance to place an upper limit on the atmospheric abundance of hydrogen peroxide. Radiation emitted by an electron in arbitrary, extreme relativistic motion, has been described for the first time in terms of a standard spectrum of nonsynchrotron type. Ultimately, such a nonsynchrotron spectrum is dependent not only on instantaneous trajectory curvature, but also upon its first two time derivatives and helicity, to provide a basic correction to the synchrotron approximation (SA). A strong deviation from SA has been predicted for above GeV electrons in oriented crystals.  相似文献
