The linear stability of the double-diffusive convection in a horizontal porous layer is studied considering the upper boundary to be open. A horizontal temperature gradient is applied along the upper boundary. It is assumed that the viscous dissipation and Soret effect are significant in the medium. The governing parameters are horizontal Rayleigh number (\(Ra_\mathrm{H}\)), solutal Rayleigh number (\(Ra_\mathrm{S}\)), Lewis number (Le), Gebhart number (Ge) and Soret parameter (Sr). The Rayleigh number (Ra) corresponding to the applied heat flux at the bottom boundary is considered as the eigenvalue. The influence of the solutal gradient caused due to the thermal diffusion on the double-diffusive instability is investigated by varying the Soret parameter. A horizontal basic flow is induced by the applied horizontal temperature gradient. The stability of this basic flow is analyzed by calculating the critical Rayleigh number (\(Ra_\mathrm{cr}\)) using the Runge–Kutta scheme accompanied by the Shooting method. The longitudinal rolls are more unstable except for some special cases. The Soret parameter has a significant effect on the stability of the flow when the upper boundary is at constant pressure. The critical Rayleigh number is decreasing in the presence of viscous dissipation except for some positive values of the Soret parameter. How a change in Soret parameter is attributing to the convective rolls is presented.  相似文献

The vertical throughflow with viscous dissipation in a horizontal porous layer is studied. The horizontal plane boundaries are assumed to be isothermal with unequal temperatures and bottom heating. A basic stationary solution of the governing equations with a uniform vertical velocity field (throughflow) is determined. The temperature field in the basic solution depends only on the vertical coordinate. Departures from the linear heat conduction profile are displayed by the temperature distribution due to the forced convection effect and to the viscous dissipation effect. A linear stability analysis of the basic solution is carried out in order to determine the conditions for the onset of convective rolls. The critical values of the wave number and of the Darcy–Rayleigh number are determined numerically by the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. It is shown that, although generally weak, the effect of viscous dissipation yields an increase of the critical value of the Darcy–Rayleigh number for downward throughflow and a decrease in the case of upward throughflow. Finally, the limiting case of a vanishing boundary temperature difference is discussed.  相似文献

The convective instability activated by the sole effect of viscous dissipation in a fluid saturated porous layer is studied. The basic parallel flow in a highly permeable porous medium is analysed by considering the viscous heating contribution in the local energy balance, by assuming a thermally insulated lower boundary and an isothermal upper boundary. The Brinkman model of momentum transfer is adopted. Arbitrarily oriented oblique roll disturbances are considered in the linear stability analysis. Among them, the longitudinal rolls, having axis parallel to the basic flow direction, are shown to be the preferred mode of instability. Some considerations on the reliability of the Brinkman model, when the viscous dissipation contribution is not negligible and when the flow conditions are close to the limiting case of a clear fluid, are finally expressed.  相似文献

The effect of viscous dissipation on the development of the boundary layer flow from a cold vertical surface embedded in a Darcian porous medium is investigated. It is found that the flow evolves gradually from the classical Cheng–Minkowycz form to the recently discovered asymptotic dissipation profile which is a parallel flow.

Adopting a two-temperature and two-velocity model, appropriate to a bidisperse porous medium (BDPM) proposed by Nield and Kuznetsov (2008), the classical steady, mixed convection boundary layer flow about a horizontal, isothermal circular cylinder embedded in a porous medium has been theoretically studied in this article. It is shown that the boundary layer analysis leads to expressions for the flow and heat transfer characteristics in terms of an inter-phase momentum parameter, a thermal diffusivity ratio, a thermal conductivity ratio, a permeability ratio, a modified thermal capacity ratio, and a buoyancy or mixed convection parameter. The transformed partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer in the f-phase (the macro-pores) and the p-phase (the remainder of the structure) are solved numerically using a very efficient implicit finite-difference technique known as Keller-box method. A good agreement is observed between the present results and those known from the open literature in the special case of a traditional Darcy formulation (monodisperse system).  相似文献

Steady mixed convection boundary layer flow from an isothermal horizontal circular cylinder embedded in a porous medium filled with a nanofluid has been studied for both cases of a heated and cooled cylinder. The resulting system of nonlinear partial differential equations is solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. The solutions for the flow and heat transfer characteristics are evaluated numerically for various values of the governing parameters, namely the nanoparticle volume fraction φ and the mixed convection parameter λ. Three different types of nanoparticles are considered, namely Cu, Al2O3 and TiO2. It is found that for each particular nanoparticle, as the nanoparticle volume fraction φ increases, the magnitude of the skin friction coefficient decreases, and this leads to an increase in the value of the mixed convection parameter λ which first produces no separation. On the other hand, it is also found that of all the three types of nanoparticles considered, for any fixed values of φ and λ, the nanoparticle Cu gives the largest values of the skin friction coefficient followed by TiO2 and Al2O3. Finally, it is worth mentioning that heating the cylinder (λ > 0) delays separation of the boundary layer and if the cylinder is hot enough (large values of λ > 0), then it is suppressed completely. On the other hand, cooling the cylinder (λ < 0) brings the boundary layer separation point nearer to the lower stagnation point and for a sufficiently cold cylinder (large values of λ < 0) there will not be a boundary layer on the cylinder.  相似文献

This article investigates a theoretical and numerical study for the effect of viscous dissipation on the steady flow with heat transfer of Newtonian fluid toward a permeable stretching surface embedded in a porous medium with a second-order slip and thermal slip. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using similarity variables. The resulting ODEs are successfully solved numerically with the help of Chebyshev finite difference method. Graphically results are shown for non-dimensional velocities and temperature. The effects of the porous parameter, the suction (injection) parameter, Eckert number, first- and second-order velocity slip parameter, the thermal slip parameter and the Prandtl number on the flow and temperature profiles are presented. Moreover, the local skin-friction and Nusselt numbers are presented. A comparison of numerical results is made with the earlier published results under limiting cases.  相似文献

The volume-averaged equations are derived for convective flow in porous media. In the thermal energy equation viscous dissipation is taken into account, and a suitable form is obtained which is valid when Brinkman effects are significant.  相似文献

The steady laminar incompressible free convective flow of a nanofluid over a permeable upward facing horizontal plate located in porous medium taking into account the thermal convective boundary condition is studied numerically. The nanofluid model used involves the effect of Brownian motion and the thermophoresis. Using similarity transformations the continuity, the momentum, the energy, and the nanoparticle volume fraction equations are transformed into a set of coupled similarity equations, before being solved numerically, by an implicit finite difference numerical method. Our analysis reveals that for a true similarity solution, the convective heat transfer coefficient related with the hot fluid and the mass transfer velocity must be proportional to x −2/3, where x is the horizontal distance along the plate from the origin. Effects of the various parameters on the dimensionless longitudinal velocity, the temperature, the nanoparticle volume fraction, as well as on the rate of heat transfer and the rate of nanoparticle volume fraction have been presented graphically and discussed. It is found that Lewis number, the Brownian motion, and the convective heat transfer parameters increase the heat transfer rate whilst the thermophoresis decreases the heat transfer rate. It is also found that Lewis number and the convective heat transfer parameter enhance the nanoparticle volume fraction rate whilst the thermophoresis parameter decreases nanoparticle volume fraction rate. A very good agreement is found between numerical results of the present article for special case and published results. This close agreement supports the validity of our analysis and the accuracy of the numerical computations.  相似文献

An analytical study of viscous dissipation effect on the fully developed forced convection Couette flow through a parallel plate channel partially filled with porous medium is presented. A uniform heat flux is imposed at the moving plate while the fixed plate is insulated. In the fluid-only region the flow field is governed by Navier–Stokes equation while the Brinkman-extended Darcy law relationship is considered in the fully saturated porous medium. The interface conditions are formulated with an empirical constant β due to the stress jump boundary condition. Fluid properties are assumed to be constant and the longitudinal heat conduction is neglected. A closed-form solution for the velocity and temperature distributions and also the Nusselt number in the channel are obtained and the viscous dissipation effect on these profiles is briefly investigated.  相似文献

This paper considers the two-dimensional problem of the theory of viscous hypersonic flows formulated for the high-velocity translational-nonequilibrium flow of a monatomic gas past a surface based on macrokinetic 13-moment Grad equations using the model of a two-layer thin viscous shock layer (TVSL) near non-thin bodies. A class of similarity variables is proposed that allows the kinetic problem of the TVSL to be reduced to the well-studied Navier–Stokes problem of the TVSL.  相似文献

The linear stability analysis of a Newtonian incompressible fluid in a vertical curved channel formed by two coaxial cylindrical surfaces with a radial temperature gradient and an azimuthal pressure gradient shows that critical modes are oscillatory and non-axisymmetric. We have derived a generalized Rayleigh discriminant which includes both the curvature and buoyancy effects. Centrifugal buoyancy induces weak asymmetry of the dependence of the control parameter critical values on the sign of the temperature gradient. The critical parameters depend on the temperature gradient, the radius ratio and the nature of the fluid. For a wide curvature channel flow, there are two critical modes: oscillatory Dean modes for small temperature gradients and oscillatory centrifugal-thermal modes for relatively large temperature gradients. Numerical solutions for the free convection heat transfer in a viscous fluid at a permeable surface embedded in a saturated porous medium, in the presence of viscous dissipation with temperature-dependent variable fluid properties, are obtained. The governing equations for the problem are derived using the Darcy model and the Boussinesq approximation (with nonlinear density temperature variation in the buoyancy force term). The coupled non-linearities arising from the temperature-dependent density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, and viscous dissipation are included. The partial differential equations of the model are reduced to ordinary differential equations by a similarity transformation and the resulting coupled, nonlinear ordinary differential equations are solved numerically by a second order finite difference scheme for several sets of values of the parameters. Also, asymptotic results are obtained for large values of | f w|. Moreover, the numerical results for the velocity, the temperature, and the wall-temperature gradient are presented through graphs and tables, and are discussed. It is observed that by increasing the fluid variable viscosity parameter, one could reduce the velocity and thermal boundary layer thickness. However, quite the opposite is true with the non-linear density temperature variation parameter.  相似文献

The effect of pulsed jet vortex generators on the structure of an adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer flow was investigated. Two geometrically optimised vortex generator configurations were used, co-rotating and counter-rotating. The duty cycle and pulse frequency were both varied and measurements of the skin friction (using hot films) and flow structure (using stereo PIV) were performed downstream of the actuators. The augmentation of the mean wall shear stress was found to be dependent on the net mass flow injected by the actuators. A quasi steady flow structure was found to develop far downstream of the injection location for the highest pulse frequency tested. The actuator near field flow structure was observed to respond very quickly to variations in the jet exit velocity.  相似文献

Fully developed forced convection in a parallel plate channel filled by a saturated porous medium, with walls held either at uniform temperature or at uniform heat flux, with the effects of viscous dissipation and flow work included, is treated analytically. The Brinkman model is employed. The analysis leads to expressions for the Nusselt number, as a function of the Darcy number and Brinkman number.  相似文献

We derive a sufficient condition for stability of a steady solution of the Navier–Stokes equation in a 3D exterior domain Ω. The condition is formulated as a requirement on integrability on the time interval (0, +∞) of a semigroup generated by the linearized problem for perturbations, applied to a finite family of certain functions. The norm of the semigroup is measured in a bounded sub-domain of Ω. We do not use any condition on “smallness” of the basic steady solution.   相似文献
