ABA-type amphiphilic triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) with different number-average molecular weights as the hydrophilic blocks (B) and poly{6-[4-(4-ethoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate} (PA6C) as the hydrophobic blocks (A) were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization. These copolymers were prepared from bromo-terminated macroinitiators based on PEG6000, PEG2000, and PEG600, with CuBr/N,N,N,N,N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalytic system, at 85 °C in anisole. The block copolymers were characterized with 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements were performed to reveal the phase segregation. In contrast to those polymers with similar compositions and structures in previous reports, these amphiphilic copolymers exhibited unusual liquid-crystalline properties over a wide temperature range, being stable even at room temperature. These copolymers showed photoresponsive isomerization under the irradiation of UV–vis light both in THF solutions and in solid films. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n‐butyl methacrylate (n‐BMA) was initiated by a poly(ethylene oxide) chloro telechelic macroinitiator synthesized by esterification of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. The polymerization, carried out in bulk at 90 °C and catalyzed by iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate in the presence of triphenylphosphine ligand (FeCl2 · 4H2O/PPh3), led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock copolymers with MMA or n‐BMA as the A block and PEO as the B block. A kinetic study showed that the polymerization was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration. Moreover, the experimental molecular weights of the block copolymers increased linearly with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution was acceptably narrow at the end of the reaction. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through the adjustment of the content of PEO blocks (PEO content >90% by mass). When the PEO content was small [monomer/macroinitiator molar ratio (M/I) = 300], the block copolymers were water‐insoluble and showed only one glass‐transition temperature. With an increase in the concentration of PEO (M/I = 100 or 50) in the copolymer, two glass transitions were detected, indicating phase separation. The macroinitiator and the corresponding triblock copolymers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, size exclusion chromatography analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined sulfonated polystyrene and block copolymers with n‐butyl acrylate (nBA) were synthesized by CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization. Neopentyl p‐styrene sulfonate (NSS) was polymerized with ethyl‐2‐bromopropionate initiator and CuBr catalyst with N,N,N′,N′‐pentamethylethyleneamine to give poly(NSS) (PNSS) with a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD < 1.12). PNSS was then acidified by thermolysis resulting in a polystyrene backbone with 100% sulfonic acid groups. Random copolymers of NSS and styrene with various composition ratios were also synthesized by copolymerization of NSS and styrene with different feed ratios (MWD < 1.11). Well defined block copolymers with nBA were synthesized by sequential polymerization of NSS from a poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA) precursor using CuBr catalyzed living radical polymerization (MWD < 1.29). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two sets of styrene‐based semifluorinated block copolymers, one with a perfluoroether pendant group and another with a perfluoroalkyl group, were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Microphase separation of the block copolymers was established by small‐angle X‐ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC measurements also showed that the perfluoroether‐based polymer had a low glass‐transition temperature (?44 °C). Contact‐angle measurements indicated that the semifluorinated block copolymers had low surface energies (ca. 13 mJ/m2). These materials hold promise as low‐surface‐energy additives or surfactants for supercritical CO2 applications. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A stable nitroxyl radical functionalized with an initiating group for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), 4‐(2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyloxy)‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (Br‐TEMPO), was synthesized by the reaction of 4‐hydroxyl‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy with 2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropionyl bromide. Stable free radical polymerization of styrene was then carried out using a conventional thermal initiator, dibenzoyl peroxide, along with Br‐TEMPO. The obtained polystyrene had an active bromine atom for ATRP at the ω‐end of the chain and was used as the macroinitiator for ATRP of methyl acrylate and ethyl acrylate to prepare block copolymers. The molecular weights of the resulting block copolymers at different monomer conversions shifted to higher molecular weights and increased with monomer conversion. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. AB block copolymers of 2‐(2′,3′,4′,6′‐tetra‐O‐acetyl‐β‐D‐glucopyranosyloxy)ethyl acrylate (AcGEA) with styrene (St) have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization using well‐defined bromo‐terminated polystyrene as a macroinitiator. An O‐deacetylation of the precursor copolymers affords amphiphilic block copolymers, PSt‐b‐PGEA, with well‐defined glycopolymer segments and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn < 1.4). The examination of the aqueous solution of these amphiphilic block copolymers revealed the formation of ordered aggregates.  相似文献

Hyperbranched-linear star block copolymers, hyperbranched poly(siloxysilane)-block-polystyrene (HBPS-b-PSt), were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene in xylene, using bromoester-terminated HBPS (HBPS-Br (P3), Mn = 7500, Mw/Mn = 1.76) as a macroinitiator. The number-average molecular weights of the obtained polymers (Mn) were in the range of 21,800-60,000 and molecular weight distributions were unimodal throughout the reaction (Mw/Mn = 1.28-1.40). These polymers showed 5 wt.% decomposition temperature (Td5) over 300 °C. The DSC thermograms of the resulting polymers indicated two glass transition temperatures (Tg). The Tg of HBPS segment shifted to higher value while the Tg of PSt segment shifted to lower value compared with those of the homopolymers. Preliminary physical characterization related to the solution viscosity of the resulting block copolymers is also reported.  相似文献

This investigation attempts to elucidate the copolymerization reaction ethylene and p-methylstyrene via the homogeneous metallocene catalyst, Et(Ind)2ZrCl2. With increasing of p-methylstyrene concentration, the poly[ethylene-co-(p-methylstyrene)] copolymer shows systematical decrease of melting temperature and crystallinity and increase of glass transition temperature. The benzylic protons of p-methylstyrene are ready for numerous chemical reactions, such as halogenation and oxidation, which can introduce functional groups at the p-methyl group position under mild reaction conditions. With the bromination reaction of poly[ethylene-co-(p-methylstyrene)], polyethylene graft copolymers, such as polyethylene-g-poly(methyl methacrylate) and polyethylene-g-polystyrene can be prepared via atomic transfer radical polymerization. The following selective bromination reaction of p-methylstyrene units in the copolymer and the subsequent radical graft-from polymerization were effective methods of producing polymeric side chains with well-defined structure. The products were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, gel-permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Additionally, the morphology of PE/PMMA and PE/PMMA/PE-g-PMMA blend are compared by using scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

Different acrylate oligomers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization in the presence of a transfer agent and CuBr/1,1,4,7,10,10‐hexamethyltriethylenetetramine. The functionality in bromine was determined by 1H NMR. These oligomers were coupled in the presence of Cu(0) and the ligand 2,2′‐bipyridine. The coupling yield was determined by size exclusion chromatography and NMR analysis and depended on the nature of the monomer and not on the molecular weight. In other words, the preliminary functionalization of the brominated chain end with styrene increased the coupling yield. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) and poly(ethylene‐g‐methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) was converted into ATRP macroinitiators by reaction with chloroacetic acid and 2‐bromoisobutyric acid, respectively, and the pendant‐functionalized polyolefins were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene and methyl methacrylate. In both cases, incorporation of the vinyl monomer into the graft copolymer increased with extent of the reaction. The controlled growth of the side chains was proved in the case of poly(ethylene‐g‐styrene) by the linear increase of molecular weight with conversion and low polydispersity (Mw /Mn < 1.4) of the cleaved polystyrene grafts. Both macroinitiators and graft copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 2440–2448, 2000  相似文献

Conetworks based on end‐linked homopolymers and amphiphilic gradient copolymers were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA, hydrophilic monomer), methyl methacrylate (MMA, hydrophobic monomer), and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA, hydrophobic cross‐linker). Sequential, rather than step‐wise polymerizations, were performed to enhance the livingness of the polymerization, particularly for the end‐linking step, and to ultimately obtain conetworks based on gradient rather than pure block copolymers. Amphiphilic conetworks based on end‐linked MMA‐DMAEMA‐MMA gradient copolymers of different compositions were successfully synthesized as confirmed by the narrow molecular weight distributions of the linear precursors, the rigidity of the amphiphilic conetwork products and the low sol‐fraction extracted from the conetworks. Similarly successful was the ATRP synthesis of an end‐linked conetwork based on a DMAEMA‐MMA statistical copolymer and of a randomly cross‐linked conetwork that resulted from the simultaneous terpolymerization of DMAEMA, MMA and EGDMA. An amphiphilic conetwork based on an end‐linked DMAEMA‐MMA‐DMAEMA gradient copolymer presented a less rigid, mucous‐like, texture. The degrees of swelling (DS) in tetrahydrofuran of all the conetworks were higher than those measured in pure water, whereas the aqueous DS values increased by lowering the pH and increasing the DMAEMA content of the conetworks. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of tert-butyl acrylate by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is reported. This polymer was prepared using FeCl2 · 4H2O(PPh3)2 catalyst system in conjunction with methyl 2-bromopropionate as initiator, in bulk and in solution using acetone as a solvent. The addition of solvent was necessary in order to decrease the polymerization rate and to afford low polydispersity polymers. The number-average molecular weights of the resulting polymers increased in direct proportion to the monomer conversion, and the polydispersities (Mw/Mn) were as low as 1.2. In addition, the preparation of an AB diblock copolymer of poly (n-butyl methacrylate)-block-poly (tert-butyl acrylate) by ATRP is reported. The resulting polymers and copolymers were characterized by means of size exclusion chromatography and 1H-NMR Spectroscopy.  相似文献

Two novel, rigid, photoluminescent, substituted terfluorene derivatives were synthesized by utilizing direct bromination and Suzuki coupling reactions. These oligomers were used as initiators for the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and tert-butyl acrylate. Thus, diblock and triblock rod-coil block copolymers were prepared with well-defined structure, as far as their size and shape is concerned. Molecular weights up to approximately 21 000 and polydispersity indices not exceeding 1.5 in most cases were obtained. The copolymers emit blue light in solution, and their luminescence properties remain practically invariable when passing from solution to the solid state. No ground-state aggregation or excimer formation were observed in the solid state, even after annealing at high temperatures.  相似文献

A series of new mesomorphic block copolymers composedofdifferentmacroinitiators, including poly(ethylene oxide), polystyrene, and poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐polystyrene, and polymethacrylate with a pendent cyanoterphenyl group were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization. The number‐average molecular weights of the three diblock copolymers, determined by gel permeation chromatography, were 10,254, 9,772, and 15,632 g mol?1, and their polydispersity indices were 1.17, 1.28, and 1.34. The mesomorphic and optical properties of all the block copolymers were investigated, and they possessed a smectic A phase with mesophasic ranges wider than 100 °C. Moreover, X‐ray diffraction patterns provided evidence of the smectic A phase and the corresponding interdigitated packing of all the polymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Azo-containing polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) obtained by cationic polymerization was used as a macroinitiator in the reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of styrene and methyl acrylate in conjunction with CuCl2/2,2′-bipyridine as a catalyst. Diblock PTHF–polystyrene and PTHF–poly(methyl acrylate) were obtained after a two-step process. In the first step of the reaction, stable chlorine-end-capped PTHF was formed with the thermolysis of azo-linked PTHF at 65–70 °C in the presence of the catalyst. Heating the system at temperatures of 100–110 °C started the polymerization of the second monomer, which resulted in the formation of block copolymers. The decomposition behavior of the azo-linked PTHF and the structure of the block copolymers were determined by 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Kinetic studies and GPC analyses further confirmed the controlled/living nature of the RATRP initiated by the polymeric radicals. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study reports an application of trichloroethanol (TCE) as a bifunctional initiator for the synthesis of block copolymers (BCPs) by organocatalyzed ring‐opening polymerization (OROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). TCE was employed to synthesize a low dispersity poly (valerolactone) macroinitiator, which was subsequently used for the ATRP of tert‐butyl methacrylate. While it is known that TCE can serve as an initiator in ATRP, the ability to induce polymerization under OROP is reported for the first time. The formation of well‐defined BCPs was confirmed by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. Computational studies were performed to obtain a molecular‐level understanding of the ring‐opening polymerization mechanism involving TCE as initiator. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. For the first time, a detailed study of the atom transfer radical polymerization of isobornyl acrylate (iBA) is reported. On the basis of these results, well‐defined PiBA‐containing block copolymers were synthesized, focussing on the preparation of amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) containing block copolymers. The precursor monomers 1‐ethoxyethyl acrylate (EEA) as well as tert‐butyl acrylate have been used to synthesize the PAA‐segments of the PiBA‐b‐PAA block copolymers. Finally, the synthesis of “block‐like” copolymers of PiBA and PEEA via a one‐pot procedure was investigated. By optimizing the copper and ligand concentration, and choosing the appropriate solvent, a controlled polymerization behaviour was obtained in all cases, as evidenced by a detailed kinetic analysis, GPC, NMR, and MALDI‐TOF data. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the quantitative transformation of the precursor polymer PEEA to the corresponding PAA‐containing copolymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A two-step procedure based on ultrasonic irradiation and reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) for the synthesis of block copolymers is described. In the first step of the procedure, a stable chlorine-end-capped polymer is formed upon the ultrasonic irradiation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in dry benzene in the presence of a copper chloride/2,2′-bipyridine catalyst. Heating the system to 110 °C initiates the polymerization of the second monomer, styrene, and this results in the formation of the block copolymers. The degradation behavior of PMMA under ultrasonic irradiation has also been studied. The agreement of the experimentally obtained molecular weights and theoretical molecular weights and the unimodal shapes of the gel permeation chromatography curves of the block copolymers indicate the controlled nature of the RATRP process initiated by polymeric radicals formed by sonication. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
