The successful implementation of a finite element model for computing shallow water flow requires: (1) continuity and momentum equations to describe the physics of the flow, (2) boundary conditions, (3) a discrete surface water region, and (4) an algebraic form of the shallow water equations and boundary conditions. Although steps (1), (2), and (4) may be documented and can be duplicated by multiple scientific investigators, the actual spatial discretization of the domain, i.e. unstructured mesh generation, is not a reproducible process at present. This inability to automatically produce variably-graded meshes that are reliable and efficient hinders fast application of the finite element method to surface water regions. In this paper we present a reproducible approach for generating unstructured, triangular meshes, which combines a hierarchical technique with a localized truncation error analysis as a means to incorporate flow variables and their derivatives. The result is a process that lays the groundwork for the automatic production of finite element meshes that can be used to model shallow water flow accurately and efficiently. The methodology described herein can also be transferred to other modeling applications.

对于两相统一Navier-Stokes方程,首先利用分裂格式对其解耦,然后通过SUPG(Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin)方法进行数值求解。

In this paper we present a finite element method for the numerical solution of axisymmetric flows. The governing equations of the flow are the axisymmetric Euler equations. We use a streamfunction angular velocity and vorticity formulation of these equations, and we consider the non-stationary and the stationary problems. For industrial applications we have developed a general model which computes the flow past an annular aerofoil and a duct propeller. It is able to take into account jumps of angular velocity and vorticiy in order to model the flow in the presence of a propeller. Moreover, we compute the complete flow around the after-body of a ship and the interaction between a ducted propeller and the stern. In the stationary case we have developed a simple and efficient version of the characteristics/finite element method. Numerical tests have shown that this last method leads to a very fast solver for the Euler equations. The numerical results are in good agreement with experimental data.

A numerical method based on the finite element method is presented for simulating the two-dimensional transient motion of a viscous liquid with free surfaces. For ease of numerical treatment of the free surface expressed by a multiple-valued function, the marker particle method is employed. Numerous virtual particles are spread over all regions occupied by liquid. They move about on a fixed finite element mesh with the liquid velocity at their positions. These particles contribute nothing to the dynamics of the liquid and only serve as markers of liquid regions. The velocity field within liquid regions is calculated by solving the Navier– Stokes equations and the equation of continuity by the finite element method based on quadrilateral elements. A detailed discussion is given of the methodological problems arising in the implementation of the marker particle method on an unstructured finite element mesh and of the solutions to these problems. The proposed method is demonstrated on three sample problems: the broken dam problem, the impact of a falling liquid drop on a still liquid and the entry of a rigid block into water. Good agreement has been obtained in the comparison of the present numerical results with available experimental data.

We first establish the rigorous field equations of the two continuous stages before and after entering water. Then correspondently, we obtain the specific variational principles, bounded theorems, and boundary integral equations of the second stage problems. The existence of solutions are proved and the scheme of solving the solutions are provided. Finally, as a numerical example, the ship's wave resistence problem is used to demonstrate the specific application of the second stage problems and its accuracy. Then we provide a rigorous and sound theoretical basis of variational finite element method and boundary element method for calculating the accurately fundamental equations.

A new Lagrangian finite element formulation is presented for time-dependent incompressible free surface fluid flow problems described by the Navier-Stokes equations. The partial differential equations describing the continuum motion of the fluid are discretized using a Galerkin procedure in conjunction with the finite element approximation. Triangular finite elements are used to represent the dependent variables of the problem. An effective time integration procedure is introduced and provides a viable computational method for solving problems with equality of representation of the pressure and velocity fields. Its success has been attributed to the strict enforcement of the continuity constraint at every stage of the iterative process. The capabilities of the analysis procedure and the computer programs are demonstrated through the solution of several problems in viscous free surface fluid flow. Comparisons of results are presented with previous theoretical, numerical and experimental results.

Theoretical and numerical formulations are presented for the conjugate problem involving incompressible flow and flow in a saturated porous medium. The major focus of the work is the development of a generally applicable finite element method for the simulation of both fixed interface and evolving porous interface problems. The available alternatives for coupling Darcy and non-Darcy models to the Navier-Stokes equations have been studied and evaluated in a mixed finite element framework. Questions regarding convergence of the finite element method for porous flow models have been addressed. Numerical experiments on simple flow geometries have revealed the shortcomings of both the Darcy and Brinkman models. Application of the more realistic models to practical, multidimensional, flow studies has also been demonstrated.

This paper proposes a hybrid vertex-centered finite volume/finite element method for solution of the two dimensional (2D) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on unstructured grids. An incremental pressure fractional step method is adopted to handle the velocity-pressure coupling. The velocity and the pressure are collocated at the node of the vertex-centered control volume which is formed by joining the centroid of cells sharing the common vertex. For the temporal integration of the momentum equations,an implicit second-order scheme is utilized to enhance the computational stability and eliminate the time step limit due to the diffusion term. The momentum equations are discretized by the vertex-centered finite volume method (FVM) and the pressure Poisson equation is solved by the Galerkin finite element method (FEM).The momentum interpolation is used to damp out the spurious pressure wiggles. The test case with analytical solutions demonstrates second-order accuracy of the current hybrid scheme in time and space for both velocity and pressure. The classic test cases, the lid-driven cavity flow, the skew cavity flow and the backward-facing step flow, show that numerical results are in good agreement with the published benchmark solutions.

A numerical study of the turbulent air flow in a trench trap and the turbulent flow around a permeable sand fence is reported in this paper. The two-dimensional modified k–ε turbulence model proposed by Kato and Launder is used to predict the turbulent characteristics of the air flow. The discretization method for the governing equations is the three-step Taylor/Galerkin finite element method proposed by the authors. For the flow in a trench trap the numerical results are compared with experimental data obtained under realistic conditions using a large wind tunnel. For the air flow around a permeable sand fence a pressure loss model is used to represent the effect of the porosity of the fence on the flow field.

In this paper, we present spectral/hp penalty least‐squares finite element formulation for the numerical solution of unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Pressure is eliminated from Navier–Stokes equations using penalty method, and finite element model is developed in terms of velocity, vorticity and dilatation. High‐order element expansions are used to construct discrete form. Unlike other penalty finite element formulations, equal‐order Gauss integration is used for both viscous and penalty terms of the coefficient matrix. For time integration, space–time decoupled schemes are implemented. Second‐order accuracy of the time integration scheme is established using the method of manufactured solution. Numerical results are presented for impulsively started lid‐driven cavity flow at Reynolds number of 5000 and transient flow over a backward‐facing step. The effect of penalty parameter on the accuracy is investigated thoroughly in this paper and results are presented for a range of penalty parameter. Present formulation produces very accurate results for even very low penalty parameters (10–50). Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study is concerned with developing a two-dimensional multiphase model that simulates the movement of NAPL in heterogeneous aquifers. Heterogeneity is dealt with in a probabilistic sense by modeling the intrinsic permeability of the porous medium as a stochastic process. The deterministic finite element method is used to spatially discretize the multiphase flow equations. The intrinsic permeability is represented in the model via its Karhunen–Loeve expansion. This is a computationally expedient representation of stochastic processes by means of a discrete set of random variables. Further, the nodal unknowns, water phase saturations and water phase pressures, are represented by their stochastic spectral expansions. This representation involves an orthogonal basis in the space of random variables. The basis consists of orthogonal polynomial chaoses of consecutive orders. The relative permeabilities of water and oil phases, and the capillary pressure are expanded in the same manner, as well. For these variables, the set of deterministic coefficients multiplying the basis in their expansions is evaluated based on constitutive relationships expressing the relative permeabilities and the capillary pressure as functions of the water phase saturations. The implementation of the various expansions into the multiphase flow equations results in the formulation of discretized stochastic differential equations that can be solved for the deterministic coefficients appearing in the expansions representing the unknowns. This method allows the computation of the probability distribution functions of the unknowns for any point in the spatial domain of the problem at any instant in time. The spectral formulation of the stochastic finite element method used herein has received wide acceptance as a comprehensive framework for problems involving random media. This paper provides the application of this formalism to the problem of two-phase flow in a random porous medium.

A new numerical method has been developed for the analysis of unsteady free surface flow problems. The problem under consideration is formulated mathematically as a two-dimensional non-linear initial boundary value problem with unknown quantities of a velocity potential and a free surface profile. The basic equations are discretized spacewise with a boundary element method and timewise with a truncated forward-time Taylor series. The key feature of the present paper lies in the method used to compute the time derivatives of the unknown quantities in the Taylor series. The use of the Taylor series expansion has enabled us to employ a variable time-stepping method. The size of time increment is determined at each time step so that the remainders of the truncated Taylor series should be equal to a given small error limit. Such a variable time-stepping technique has made a great contribution to numerically stable computations. A wave-making problem in a two-dimensional rectangular water tank has been analysed. The computational accuracy has been verified by comparing the present numerical results with available experimental data. Good agreement is obtained.

A finite element method is proposed for the analysis of density flow which is induced by a difference of density. The method employs the idea that density variation can be pursued by using markers distributed in the flow field. For the numerical integration scheme, the velocity correction method is successfully used, introducing a potential for the correction of velocity. This method is useful because one can use linear interpolation functions for velocity, pressure and potential based on the triangular finite element. The final equations can be formulated using the quasi-explicit finite element method. A flume in a tank with sloping bottom has been analysed by the present method. The computed results show extremely good agreement with the experimental observations.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the density flow in adiabatic two-phase fluids through the characteristic finite element method. The fluids are assumed to be liquids. The equations of conservations of mass and momentum for the adiabatic flows and the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state are employed as the governing equations. The employed finite element method is a combination of the characteristic method and the implicit method. The governing equations are divided into two parts: the advection part and the non-advection part. The characteristic method is applied to the advection part. The Hermite interpolation function, which is based on the complete third-order polynomial interpolation using triangular finite element is employed for the interpolation of both velocity and density. Using the discontinuity conditions, an interface translocation method can be derived. The interface of the two flow densities are interpolated through the third-order spline function, using which the curvature of the interface can be directly computed. For the numerical study, the development of density flow over the Tokyo bay is presented. It is detected out that high density area is abruptly diffused over the whole area. According to the differences in the two densities, various flow patterns are computed.

The present paper makes use of a wave equation formulation of the primitive shallow water equations to simulate one-dimensional free surface flow. A numerical formulation of the boundary element method is then developed to solve the wave continuity equation using a time-dependent fundamental solution, while an explicit finite difference scheme is used to derive velocities from the primitive momentum equation. One-dimensional free surface flows in open channels are treated and the results compared with analytical and numerical solutions.

A finite difference technique has been developed to study the Newtonian jet swell problem. The streamfunction and vorticity were used as dependent variables to describe the jet flow. The boundary-fitted co-ordinate transformation method was adopted to map the flow geometry into a rectangular domain. The standard finite difference method was then applied for solving the flow equations. The location of the jet free surface was updated by the kinematic boundary condition, and an adjustable parameter was included in the free-surface iteration. We could obtain numerical solutions for the Reynolds number as high as 100, and the differences between the present study and previous finite element simulations on the jet swell ratio are less than 5%.
