Viscous flow around a circular cylinder at a subcritical Reynolds number is investigated using a large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with the Smagorinsky subgrid-scale (SGS) model. A fractional-step method with a second-order in time and a combined finite-difference/spectral approximations are used to solve the filtered three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Calculations have been performed with and without the SGS model. Turbulence statistical behaviors and flow structures in the near wake of the cylinder are studied. Some calculated results, including the lift and drag coefficients, shedding frequency, peak Reynolds stresses, and time-average velocity profile, are in good agreement with the experimental and computational data, which shows that the Smagorinsky model can reasonably predict the global features of the flow and some turbulent statistical behaviors. Oscillatory turbulent flow over a flat plate is studied using large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods. A dynamic subgrid-scale model is employed in LES and Saffman's turbulence model is used in RANS. The flow behaviors are discussed for the accelerating and decelerating phases during the oscillating cycle. The friction force on the wall and its phase shift from laminar to turbulent regime are also investigated for different Reynolds numbers. A recently introduced nonlinear model undergoes evaluations based on two isotropic turbulent cases: a University of Wiscosion-Madison case at a moderate Reynolds number and a Johns Hopkins University case at a high Reynolds number. The model uses an estimation of the subgrid-scale (SGS) kinetic energy to model the magnitude of the SGS stress tensor, and uses the normalized velocity gradient tensor to model the structure of the SGS stress tensor. Testing is performed for the first case through a comparison between direct numerical simulation (DNS) results and large eddy simulation (LES) results regarding resolved kinetic energy and energy spectrum. In the second case, we examine the resolved kinetic energy, the energy spectrum, as well as other key statistics including the probability density functions of velocities and velocity gradients, the skewness factors, and the flatness factors. Simulations using the model are numerically stable, and results are satisfactorily compared with DNS results and consistent with statistical theories of turbulence.

This study employed a direct numerical simulation (DNS) technique to contrast the plume behaviours and mixing of passive scalar emitted from line sources (aligned with the spanwise direction) in neutrally and unstably stratified open‐channel flows. The DNS model was developed using the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) employing trilinear brick elements with equal‐order interpolating polynomials that solved the momentum and continuity equations, together with conservation of energy and mass equations in incompressible flow. The second‐order accurate fractional‐step method was used to handle the implicit velocity–pressure coupling in incompressible flow. It also segregated the solution to the advection and diffusion terms, which were then integrated in time, respectively, by the explicit third‐order accurate Runge–Kutta method and the implicit second‐order accurate Crank–Nicolson method. The buoyancy term under unstable stratification was integrated in time explicitly by the first‐order accurate Euler method. The DNS FEM model calculated the scalar‐plume development and the mean plume path. In particular, it calculated the plume meandering in the wall‐normal direction under unstable stratification that agreed well with the laboratory and field measurements, as well as previous modelling results available in literature. Thermally stratified shear turbulent channel flow with temperature oscillation on the bottom wall of the channel is calculated to investigate the behavior of turbulent flow and heat transfer by use of large eddy simulation (LES) approach coupled with dynamic subgrid-scale (SGS) models. The objective of this study is to deal with the effect of the temperature oscillation on turbulent behavior of thermally stratified turbulent channel flow and to examine the effectiveness of the LES technique for predicting statistically unsteady turbulent flow driven by time-varying buoyancy force. To validate the present calculation, thermally stratified shear turbulent channel flow is computed and compared with available data obtained by direct numerical simulation (DNS), which confirm that the present approach can be used to predict thermally stratified turbulent channel flow satisfactorily. Further, to illustrate the effect of the temperature oscillation with different Richardson numbers and periods of the oscillation on turbulence characteristics, the phase-averaged mean value and fluctuation of the resolved velocities and temperature, and instantaneous velocity fluctuation structures are analyzed.

Self‐adaptive subgrid‐scale models are proposed and assessed. They are based on the use of the Germano–Lilly dynamic procedure and the use of a selection function. These models, which do not incorporate any information related to the location of the solid walls, are well suited for the simulation of turbulent flows in complex geometries. Their reliability, when used together with a second‐order non‐dissipative numerical method, is assessed on the plane channel configuration for two values of the Reynolds number (Reτ = 180 and 395) for two grid resolutions. The selection function approach for deriving self‐adaptive subgrid models is found to yield results very similar to those obtained using a dynamic model, without requiring any numerical stabilization procedure. The use of the selection function is shown to be the only one which is able to capture the backscatter process in the buffer layer, while producing a strictly positive subgrid viscosity. This is demonstrated to be linked to the capability of the selection function to permit a decorrelation between the mean strain and the fluctuations of the subgrid stresses. That point is illustrated thanks to the introduction of a new decomposition of the fluctuating strain subgrid dissipation. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A Lagrangian dynamic formulation of the mixed similarity subgrid (SGS) model for large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulence is proposed. In this model, averaging is performed over fluid trajectories, which makes the model applicable to complex flows without directions of statistical homogeneity. An alternative version based on a Taylor series expansion (nonlinear mixed model) is also examined. The Lagrangian models are implemented in a finite difference code and tested in forced and decaying isotropic turbulence. As comparison, the dynamic Smagorinsky model and volume-averaged formulations of the mixed models are also tested. Good results are obtained, except in the case of low-resolution LES (323) of decaying turbulence, where the similarity coefficient becomes negative due to the fact that the test-filter scale exceeds the integral scale of turbulence. At a higher resolution (643), the dynamic similarity coefficient is positive and good agreement is found between predicted and measured kinetic energy evolution. Compared to the eddy viscosity term, the similarity or the nonlinear terms contribute significantly to both SGS dissipation of kinetic energy and SGS force. In order to dynamically test the accuracy of the modeling, the error incurred in satisfying the Germano identity is evaluated. It is found that the dynamic Smagorinksy model generates a very large error, only 3% lower than the worst-case scenario without model. Addition of the similarity or nonlinear term decreases the error by up to about 50%, confirming that it represents a more realistic parameterization than the Smagorinsky model alone.

The near-wall regions of high Reynolds numbers turbulent flows must be modelled to treat many practical engineering and aeronautical applications. In this review we examine results from simulations of both attached and separated flows on coarse grids in which the near-wall regions are not resolved and are instead represented by approximate wall boundary conditions. The simulations use the dynamic Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model and a second-order finite-difference method. Typical results are found to be mixed, with acceptable results found in many cases in the core of the flow far from the walls, provided there is adequate numerical resolution, but with poorer results generally found near the wall. Deficiencies in this approach are caused in part by both inaccuracies in subgrid-scale modelling and numerical errors in the low-order finite-difference method on coarse near-wall grids, which should be taken into account when constructing models and performing large-eddy simulation on coarse grids. A promising new method for developing wall models from optimal control theory is also discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Subgrid nonlinear interaction and energy transfer are analyzed using direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence. Influences of cutoff wave number at different ranges of scale on the energetics and dynamics have been investigated. It is observed that subgrid-subgrid interaction dominates the turbulent dynamics when cut-off wave number locates in the energy-containing range while resolved-subgrid interaction dominates if it is in the dissipation range. By decomposing the subgrid energy transfer and nonlinear interaction into ‘forward’ and ‘backward’ groups according to the sign of triadic interaction, we find that individually each group has very large contribution, but the net of them is much smaller, implying that tremendous cancellation happens between these two groups.

In a large wind farm, the wakes of upstream and downstream wind turbines can interfere with each other, affecting the overall power output of the wind farm. To further improve the numerical accuracy of the turbine wake dynamics under atmosphere turbulence, this work proposes some improvements to the actuator line-large-eddy simulation(AL-LES) method. This paper presents the formulation of a mixed dynamic subgrid-scale model in non-Cartesian geometries suitable for the study of complex flows. Following the approach developed by Jordan [J. Comput. Phys. 148, 322 (1999)], the variables are first transformed into a contravariant form and then filtered in the computational space. A dynamic localized mixed model, previously developed within the Cartesian framework has been entirely re-formulated for non-orthogonal meshes. The model performance was evaluated by carrying out two tests. First, a plane channel flow at Reτ = 395 was simulated using both Cartesian and curvilinear grids; the results show that the model formulation is consistent and insensitive to grid distortion, and compares well with the reference data. Then, computations of the turbulent flow over a two-dimensional channel with a wavy wall were performed. Accurate first- and second-order statistics were obtained using relatively coarse grids. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

This paper presents an anisotropic adaptive finite element method (FEM) to solve the governing equations of steady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) duct flow. A residual error estimator is presented for the standard FEM, and two-sided bounds on the error independent of the aspect ratio of meshes are provided. Based on the Zienkiewicz-Zhu estimates, a computable anisotropic error indicator and an implement anisotropic adaptive refinement for the MHD problem are derived at different values of the Hartmann number. The most distinguishing feature of the method is that the layer information from some directions is captured well such that the number of mesh vertices is dramatically reduced for a given level of accuracy. Thus, this approach is more suitable for approximating the layer problem at high Hartmann numbers. Numerical results show efficiency of the algorithm.

In this article, large eddy simulation is used to simulate homogeneous shear flows. The spatial discretization is accomplished by the spectral collocation method and a third‐order Runge–Kutta method is used to integrate the time‐dependent terms. For the estimation of the subgrid‐scale stress tensor, the Smagorinsky model, the dynamic model, the scale‐similarity model and the mixed model are used. Their predicting performance for homogeneous shear flow is compared accordingly. The initial Reynolds number varies from 33 to 99 and the initial shear number is 2. Evolution of the turbulent kinetic energy, the growth rate, the anisotropy component and the subgrid‐scale dissipation rate is presented. In addition, the performance of several filters is examined.
