Viscous flow around a circular cylinder at a subcritical Reynolds number is investigated using a large eddy simulation (LES) coupled with the Smagorinsky subgrid-scale (SGS) model. A fractional-step method with a second-order in time and a combined finite-difference/spectral approximations are used to solve the filtered three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Calculations have been performed with and without the SGS model. Turbulence statistical behaviors and flow structures in the near wake of the cylinder are studied. Some calculated results, including the lift and drag coefficients, shedding frequency, peak Reynolds stresses, and time-average velocity profile, are in good agreement with the experimental and computational data, which shows that the Smagorinsky model can reasonably predict the global features of the flow and some turbulent statistical behaviors. This work focuses upon the development of a wavelet-based variant of the variational multiscale method (VMS) for accurate and efficient large eddy simulation (LES) called wavelet-based VMS-LES (WMS-LES). This approach has been incorporated within the framework of a high-order incompressible flow solver based upon the pressure-stabilized discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DG-FEM). The VMS approach is designed to produce an a priori scale separation of the governing equations, in a manner which makes no assumptions on either the boundary conditions or the mesh uniformity. Using second-generation wavelets (SGWs) elementwise for scale separation ensures, on one hand, the preservation of the computational compactness of the DG-FEM scheme and, on the other hand, the ability to achieve scale separation in wavenumber space. The optimal space-frequency localization property of the SGW provides an improvement over the commonly used Legendre polynomials. The suitability of the elementwise SGW scale-separation operation as a tool for error indication has been demonstrated in an h-adaptive computation of the reentrant corner test case. Finally, the DG-FEM solver and the WMS-LES method have been assessed through simulations upon the three-dimensional Taylor-Green vortex test case. Our results indicate that the WMS-LES approach exhibits a distinct improvement over the monolevel LES approach. This effect is not produced by a change in the magnitude of the subgrid dissipation but rather by the redistribution of the subgrid dissipation in wavenumber space.

Oscillatory turbulent flow over a flat plate is studied using large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods. A dynamic subgrid-scale model is employed in LES and Saffman's turbulence model is used in RANS. The flow behaviors are discussed for the accelerating and decelerating phases during the oscillating cycle. The friction force on the wall and its phase shift from laminar to turbulent regime are also investigated for different Reynolds numbers. This study employed a direct numerical simulation (DNS) technique to contrast the plume behaviours and mixing of passive scalar emitted from line sources (aligned with the spanwise direction) in neutrally and unstably stratified open‐channel flows. The DNS model was developed using the Galerkin finite element method (FEM) employing trilinear brick elements with equal‐order interpolating polynomials that solved the momentum and continuity equations, together with conservation of energy and mass equations in incompressible flow. The second‐order accurate fractional‐step method was used to handle the implicit velocity–pressure coupling in incompressible flow. It also segregated the solution to the advection and diffusion terms, which were then integrated in time, respectively, by the explicit third‐order accurate Runge–Kutta method and the implicit second‐order accurate Crank–Nicolson method. The buoyancy term under unstable stratification was integrated in time explicitly by the first‐order accurate Euler method. The DNS FEM model calculated the scalar‐plume development and the mean plume path. In particular, it calculated the plume meandering in the wall‐normal direction under unstable stratification that agreed well with the laboratory and field measurements, as well as previous modelling results available in literature. A finite element method for computing viscous incompressible flows based on the gauge formulation introduced in [Weinan E, Liu J‐G. Gauge method for viscous incompressible flows. Journal of Computational Physics (submitted)] is presented. This formulation replaces the pressure by a gauge variable. This new gauge variable is a numerical tool and differs from the standard gauge variable that arises from decomposing a compressible velocity field. It has the advantage that an additional boundary condition can be assigned to the gauge variable, thus eliminating the issue of a pressure boundary condition associated with the original primitive variable formulation. The computational task is then reduced to solving standard heat and Poisson equations, which are approximated by straightforward, piecewise linear (or higher‐order) finite elements. This method can achieve high‐order accuracy at a cost comparable with that of solving standard heat and Poisson equations. It is naturally adapted to complex geometry and it is much simpler than traditional finite element methods for incompressible flows. Several numerical examples on both structured and unstructured grids are presented. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Thermally stratified shear turbulent channel flow with temperature oscillation on the bottom wall of the channel is calculated to investigate the behavior of turbulent flow and heat transfer by use of large eddy simulation (LES) approach coupled with dynamic subgrid-scale (SGS) models. The objective of this study is to deal with the effect of the temperature oscillation on turbulent behavior of thermally stratified turbulent channel flow and to examine the effectiveness of the LES technique for predicting statistically unsteady turbulent flow driven by time-varying buoyancy force. To validate the present calculation, thermally stratified shear turbulent channel flow is computed and compared with available data obtained by direct numerical simulation (DNS), which confirm that the present approach can be used to predict thermally stratified turbulent channel flow satisfactorily. Further, to illustrate the effect of the temperature oscillation with different Richardson numbers and periods of the oscillation on turbulence characteristics, the phase-averaged mean value and fluctuation of the resolved velocities and temperature, and instantaneous velocity fluctuation structures are analyzed.

A hybrid approach to couple finite difference method (FDM) with finite particle method (FPM) (ie, FDM-FPM) is developed to simulate viscous incompressible flows. FDM is a grid-based method that is convenient for implementing multiple or adaptive resolutions and is computationally efficient. FPM is an improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), which is widely used in modeling fluid flows with free surfaces and complex boundaries. The proposed FDM-FPM leverages their advantages and is appealing in modeling viscous incompressible flows to balance accuracy and efficiency. In order to exchange the interface information between FDM and FPM for achieving consistency, stability, and convergence, a transition region is created in the particle region to maintain the stability of the interface between two methods. The mass flux algorithm is defined to control the particle creation and deletion. The mass is updated by N-S equations instead of the interpolation. In order to allow information exchange, an overlapping zone is defined near the interface. The information of overlapping zone is obtained by an FPM-type interpolation. Taylor-Green vortices and lid-driven shear cavity flows are simulated to test the accuracy and the conservation of the FDM-FPM hybrid approach. The standing waves and flows around NACA airfoils are further simulated to test the ability to deal with free surfaces and complex boundaries. The results show that FDM-FPM retains not only the high efficiency of FDM with multiple resolutions but also the ability of FPM in modeling free surfaces and complex boundaries.

A finite element method for quasi‐incompressible viscous flows is presented. An equation for pressure is derived from a second‐order time accurate Taylor–Galerkin procedure that combines the mass and the momentum conservation laws. At each time step, once the pressure has been determined, the velocity field is computed solving discretized equations obtained from another second‐order time accurate scheme and a least‐squares minimization of spatial momentum residuals. The terms that stabilize the finite element method (controlling wiggles and circumventing the Babuska–Brezzi condition) arise naturally from the process, rather than being introduced a priori in the variational formulation. A comparison between the present second‐order accurate method and our previous first‐order accurate formulation is shown. The method is also demonstrated in the computation of the leaky‐lid driven cavity flow and in the simulation of a crossflow past a circular cylinder. In both cases, good agreement with previously published experimental and computational results has been obtained. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Based on local algorithms, some parallel finite element(FE) iterative methods for stationary incompressible magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) are presented. These approaches are on account of two-grid skill include two major phases: find the FE solution by solving the nonlinear system on a globally coarse mesh to seize the low frequency component of the solution, and then locally solve linearized residual subproblems by one of three iterations(Stokes-type, Newton, and Oseen-type) on subdomains with fine...

In this paper, we report our development of an implicit hybrid flow solver for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The methodology is based on the pressure correction or projection method. A fractional step approach is used to obtain an intermediate velocity field by solving the original momentum equations with the matrix‐free implicit cell‐centred finite volume method. The Poisson equation derived from the fractional step approach is solved by the node‐based Galerkin finite element method for an auxiliary variable. The auxiliary variable is closely related to the real pressure and is used to update the velocity field and the pressure field. We store the velocity components at cell centres and the auxiliary variable at cell vertices, making the current solver a staggered‐mesh scheme. Numerical examples demonstrate the performance of the resulting hybrid scheme, such as the correct temporal convergence rates for both velocity and pressure, absence of unphysical pressure boundary layer, good convergence in steady‐state simulations and capability in predicting accurate drag, lift and Strouhal number in the flow around a circular cylinder. In this paper, a three-dimensional filter-matrix lattice Boltzmann (FMLB) model based on large eddy simulation (LES) was verified for simulating wall-bounded turbulent flows. The Vreman subgrid-scale model was employed in the present FMLB–LES framework, which had been proved to be capable of predicting turbulent near-wall region accurately. The fully developed turbulent channel flows were performed at a friction Reynolds number Reτ of 180. The turbulence statistics computed from the present FMLB–LES simulations, including mean stream velocity profile, Reynolds stress profile and root-mean-square velocity fluctuations greed well with the LES results of multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) LB model, and some discrepancies in comparison with those direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of Kim et al. was also observed due to the relatively low grid resolution. Moreover, to investigate the influence of grid resolution on the present LES simulation, a DNS simulation on a finer gird was also implemented by present FMLB–D3Q19 model. Comparisons of detailed computed various turbulence statistics with available benchmark data of DNS showed quite well agreement.

This paper presents the second validation step of a compressible discontinuous Galerkin solver with symmetric interior penalty (DGM/SIP) for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) and the large eddy simulation (LES) of complex flows. The method has already been successfully validated for DNS of an academic flow and has been applied to flows around complex geometries (e.g. airfoils and turbomachinery blades). During these studies, the advantages of the dissipation properties of the method have been highlighted, showing a natural tendency to dissipate only the under‐resolved scales (i.e the smallest scales present on the mesh), leaving the larger scales unaffected. This phenomenon is further enhanced as the polynomial order is increased. Indeed, the order increases the dissipation at the largest wave numbers, while its range of impact is reduced. These properties are spectrally compatible with a subgrid‐scale model, and hence DGM may be well suited to be used for an implicit LES (ILES) approach. A validation of this DGM/ILES approach is here investigated on canonical flows, allowing to study the impact of the discretisation on the turbulence for under‐resolved computations. The first test case is the LES of decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT) at very high Reynolds number. This benchmark allows to assess the spectral behaviour of the method for implicit LES. The results are in agreement with theory and are even slightly more accurate than other numerical results from literature, obtained using a pseudo‐spectral (PS) method with a state‐of‐the‐art subgrid‐scale model. The second benchmark is the LES of the channel flow. Three Reynolds numbers are considered: Reτ=395, 590 and 950. The results are compared with DNS of Moser et al. and Hoyas et al., also using PS methods. Both averaged velocity and fluctuations are globally in good agreement with the reference, showing the ability of the method to predict equilibrium wall‐bounded flow turbulence. To show that the method is able to perform accurate DNS, a DNS of HIT at Reλ=64 and a DNS of the channel flow at Reτ=180 are also performed. The effects of the grid refinement are investigated on the channel flow at Reτ=395, highlighting the improvement of the results when refining the mesh in the spanwise direction. Finally, the modification of the ILES parameters, that is the Riemann solver and of the SIP coefficient, is studied on both cases, showing a significant influence on the choice of the Riemann solver. Subgrid nonlinear interaction and energy transfer are analyzed using direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence. Influences of cutoff wave number at different ranges of scale on the energetics and dynamics have been investigated. It is observed that subgrid-subgrid interaction dominates the turbulent dynamics when cut-off wave number locates in the energy-containing range while resolved-subgrid interaction dominates if it is in the dissipation range. By decomposing the subgrid energy transfer and nonlinear interaction into ‘forward’ and ‘backward’ groups according to the sign of triadic interaction, we find that individually each group has very large contribution, but the net of them is much smaller, implying that tremendous cancellation happens between these two groups.

This paper discusses the application of the extended finite element method (XFEM) to solve two-phase incompressible flows. The Navier–Stokes equations are discretised using the Taylor–Hood finite element. To capture the different discontinuities across the interface, kink or jump enrichments are used for the velocity and/or pressure fields. However, these enrichments may lead to an inappropriate combination of interpolations. Different polynomial enrichment orders and different enrichment functions are investigated; only the stable combination will be used afterward.

In cases with a surface tension force, the accuracy mainly relies on the precise computation of the normal and curvature. A novel method for computing normal vectors to the interface is proposed. This method employs successive mesh refinements inside the cut elements. Comparisons with analytical and numerical solutions demonstrate that the method is effective. Moreover, the mesh refinement improves the sub-integration in the XFEM and allows for a precise re-initialisation procedure.
