This paper describes flow around a pair of cylinders in tandem arrangement with a downstream cylinder being fixed or forced to oscillate transversely. A sinusoidal parietal velocity is applied to simulate cylinder oscillation. Time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite element method. It is shown that there exist two distinct flow regimes: ‘vortex suppression regime’ and ‘vortex formation regime’. Averaged vortex lengths between the two cylinders, pressure variations at back and front stagnant points as well as circumferential pressure profiles of the downstream cylinder are found completely different in the two regimes and, thus, can be used to identify the flow regimes. It is shown that frequency selection in the wake of the oscillating cylinder is a result of non-linear interaction among vortex wakes upstream and downstream of the second cylinder and its forced oscillation. Increasing cylinder spacing results in a stronger oscillatory incident flow upstream of the second cylinder and, thus, a smaller synchronization zone.  相似文献

The present work is aimed to give some insight into the relation between vortex shedding modes and transition to three-dimensionality in the wake of a freely vibrating cylinder by establishing a numerical model and analyzing the relevant results of two- and three-dimensional simulations. The compressible flow past an elastically-mounted cylinder is solved by using the immersed boundary method (IB method). The cylinder is free to vibrate in the transverse direction with zero structure damping. The response of displacement amplitude is studied with the variation of reduced velocity. Whether P+S mode exists in three-dimensional flow and the occurrence of 2P mode is caused by flow transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional are problems of concern. Both 2P and P+S wake modes are observed in two- and three-dimensional simulations. The numerical results indicate that the flow transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional is coupled with the cylinder vibration in the synchronization/lock-in regime. The wake formation given by three-dimensional simulations suggests that the P+S mode might exist in reality when the flow is reverted to two-dimensional by vortex induced vibration (VIV) at Re=300–350. When Reynolds number increases to 425, the wake formation undergoes transition to three-dimensionality and 2P mode is observed. The effect of mass ratio on the flow transition to three-dimensionality is studied. The relationship between wake modes and aerodynamic forces is discussed.  相似文献

Flow around an oscillating cylinder in a subcritical region are numerically studied with a lattice Boltzmann method(LBM). The effects of the Reynolds number, oscillation amplitude and frequency on the vortex wake modes and hydrodynamics forces on the cylinder surface are systematically investigated. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of resonance induced by the cylinder oscillation. The results demonstrate that vortex shedding can be excited extensively under subcritical conditions, and the response region of vibration frequency broadens with increasing Reynolds number and oscillation amplitude. Two distinct types of vortex shedding regimes are observed. The first type of vortex shedding regime(VSR I) is excited at low frequencies close to the intrinsic frequency of flow, and the second type of vortex shedding regime(VSR II)occurs at high frequencies with the Reynolds number close to the critical value. In the VSR I, a pair of alternately rotating vortices are shed in the wake per oscillation cycle, and lock-in/synchronization occurs, while in the VSR II, two alternately rotating vortices are shed for several oscillation cycles, and the vortex shedding frequency is close to that of a stationary cylinder under the critical condition. The excitation mechanisms of the two types of vortex shedding modes are analyzed separately.  相似文献

Two-dimensional numerical simulation is performed to understand the effect of flow pulsation on the flow and heat transfer from a heated square cylinder at Re = 100. Numerical calculations are carried out by using a finite volume method based on the pressure-implicit with splitting of operators algorithm in a collocated grid. The effects of flow pulsation amplitude (0.2 ≤ A ≤ 0.8) and frequency (0 ≤ f p  ≤ 20 Hz) on the detailed kinematics of flow (streamlines, vorticity patterns), the macroscopic parameters (drag coefficient, vortex shedding frequency) and heat transfer enhancement are presented in detail. The Strouhal number of vortices shedding, drag coefficient for non-pulsating flow are compared with the previously published data, and good agreement is found. The lock-on phenomenon is observed for a square cylinder in the present flow pulsation. When the pulsating frequency is within the lock-on regime, time averaged drag coefficient and heat transfer from the square cylinder is substantially augmented, and when the pulsating frequency in about the natural vortex shedding frequency, the heat transfer is also substantially enhanced. In addition, the influence of the pulsating amplitude on the time averaged drag coefficient, heat transfer enhancement and lock-on occurrence is discussed in detail.  相似文献

The flow around a stationary circular cylinder modified by two synthetic jets positioned at the mean separation points is numerically studied. The Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity and the circular cylinder diameter is Re=500. The focus is to present a novel way to suppress the lift fluctuations by changing the vortex shedding mode, and thus particular attention is paid to the interactions between the synthetic jets and wake shear layers and the resulting vortex dynamics. The overall influences of both momentum coefficient and excitation frequency are discussed. In some simulated cases, the vortex lock-on phenomenon is discovered, which causes the typical Kàrmàn type vortex shedding to be converted into the symmetric shedding modes, leading to the complete suppression of lift fluctuations. In other cases, the asymmetric shedding mode still dominates the wake evolution. Detailed vortical evolution for each typical wake pattern is analyzed to reveal the control mechanism. Additionally, the control effectiveness is evaluated, indicating that the present control strategy contributes an effective way to suppress the lift fluctuations and reduce the mean drag.  相似文献

This paper comprises an in-depth physical discussion of the flow-induced vibration of two circular cylinders in view of the time-mean lift force on stationary cylinders and interaction mechanisms. The gap-spacing ratio T/D is varied from 0.1 to 5 and the attack angle α from 0° to 180° where T is the gap width between the cylinders and D is the diameter of a cylinder. Mechanisms of interaction between two cylinders are discussed based on time-mean lift, fluctuating lift, flow structures and flow-induced responses. The whole regime is classified into seven interaction regimes, i.e., no interaction regime; boundary layer and cylinder interaction regime; shear-layer/wake and cylinder interaction regime; shear-layer and shear-layer interaction regime; vortex and cylinder interaction regime; vortex and shear-layer interaction regime; and vortex and vortex interaction regime. Though a single non-interfering circular cylinder does not correspond to a galloping following quasi-steady galloping theory, two circular cylinders experience violent galloping vibration due to shear-layer/wake and cylinder interaction as well as boundary layer and cylinder interaction. A larger magnitude of fluctuating lift communicates to a larger amplitude vortex excitation.  相似文献

Flow structure of wake behind a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Flow around a circular cylinder oscillating rotationally with a relatively high forcing frequency has been investigated experimentally. The dominant parameters affecting this experiment are the Reynolds number (Re), oscillation amplitude (θA), and frequency ratio FR=ff/fn, where ff is the forcing frequency and fn is the natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under conditions of Re=4.14×103, 0°θA60° and 0.0FR2.0. Rotational oscillation of the cylinder significantly modified the flow structure in the near-wake. Depending on the frequency ratio FR, the cylinder wake showed five different flow regimes, each with a distinct wake structure. The vortex formation length and the vortex shedding frequency were greatly changed before and after the lock-on regime where vortices shed at the same frequency as the forcing frequency. The lock-on phenomenon always occurred at FR=1.0 and the frequency range of the lock-on regime expanded with increasing oscillation amplitude θA. In addition, the drag coefficient was reduced when the frequency ratio FR was less than 1.0 (FR<1.0) while fixing the oscillation amplitude at θA=30°. When the oscillation amplitude θA was used as a control parameter at a fixed frequency ratio FR=1.0 (lock-on regime), the drag reduction effect was observed at all oscillation amplitudes except for the case of θA=30°. This type of active flow control method can be used effectively in aerodynamic applications while optimizing the forcing parameters.  相似文献

This paper attempts to study the roles of lateral cylinder oscillations and a uniform cross-flow in the vortex formation and wake modes of an oscillating circular cylinder. A circular cylinder is given lateral oscillations of varying amplitudes (between 0.28 and 1.42 cylinder-diameters) in a slow uniform flow stream (Reynolds number=284) to produce the 2S, 2P and P+S wake modes. Detailed flow information is obtained with time-resolved particle-image velocimetry and the phase-locked averaging techniques. In the 2S and 2P mode, the flow speeds relative to the cylinder movement are less than the uniform flow velocity and it is found that initial formation of a vortex is caused by shear-layer separation of the uniform flow on the cylinder. Subsequent development of the shear-layer vortices is affected by the lateral cylinder movement. At small cylinder oscillation amplitudes, vortices are shed in synchronization with the cylinder movement, resulting in the 2S mode. The 2P mode occurs at larger cylinder oscillation amplitudes at which each shear-layer vortex is found to undergo intense stretching and eventual bifurcation into two separate vortices. The P+S mode occurs when the cylinder moving speeds are, for most of the time, higher than the speed of the uniform flow. These situations are found at fast and large-amplitude cylinder oscillations in which the flow relative to the cylinder movement takes over the uniform flow in governing the initial vortex formation. The formation stages of vortices from the cylinder are found to bear close resemblance to those of a vortex street pattern of a cylinder oscillating in an otherwise quiescent fluid at Keulegan–Carpenter numbers around 16. Vortices in the inclined vortex street pattern so formed are then convected downstream by the uniform flow as the vortex pairs in the 2P mode.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of two-dimensional fluid flow past a stationary and rotationally oscillating equilateral triangular cylinder with a variable incident angle, Reynolds number, oscillating amplitude, and oscillating frequency is numerically investigated. The computations are carried out by using a two-step Taylor-characteristic-based Galerkin (TCBG) algorithm. For the stationary cases, simulations are conducted at various incident angles of α=0.0–60.0° and Reynolds numbers of Re=50–160. For the oscillation cases, the investigations are done at various oscillating amplitudes of θmax=7.5–30.0° and oscillating frequencies of Fs/Fo=0.5–3.0 considering two different incidence angles (α=0.0°, 60.0°) and three different Reynolds numbers (Re=50, 100, 150). The results show that the influences of key parameters (incidence angle, Reynolds number, oscillating amplitude, and oscillating frequency) are significant on the flow pattern and hydrodynamic forces. For the stationary cases, at smaller angle of incidence (α≤30.0°), Reynolds number has a large impact on the position of the separation points. When α is between 30.0° and 60.0°, it was found that the separation points are located at the rear corners. From a topological point of view, the diagram of flow pattern is summarized, including two distinct patterns, namely, main separation and vortex merging. A deep analysis of the influence of Reynolds number and incidence angles on the mean pressure coefficient along the triangular cylinder surface is presented. Additionally, for the oscillating cases, the lock-on phenomenon is captured. The dominant flow patterns are 2S mode and P+S mode in lock-on region at α=0.0°. It is found at α=60.0°, however, that the flow pattern is predominantly 2S mode. Furthermore, except for the case of Fs/Fo=2.0, the mean drag decreases as the oscillating amplitude increases for each Reynolds number at α=0.0°. At α=60.0°, the minimum mean drag for Fs/Fo=1.5 is lower than that for stationary case, and occurs at θmax=15.0° (Re=100) and θmax=22.5° (Re=150), respectively. Finally, the effect of Reynolds number on a rotational oscillation cylinder is elucidated.  相似文献

Interaction of an incident vortex street with an oscillating cylinder is addressed using high-image-density particle image velocimetry and simultaneous force measurements. This approach reveals that the timing of the incident vortices relative to the cylinder motion controls the large-scale vortex formation in the near-wake, and thereby the phase shift between the loading on the cylinder and its motion. As a consequence, it is possible to change the sign of the fluid-dynamic work done by the fluid on the cylinder. The incident vortices dramatically shorten the formation length of vortices in the near-wake and yield values of lift coefficient up to a factor of five larger than that for an isolated cylinder subjected to controlled oscillations in the absence of incident vortices. These alterations of the wake structure and loading occur in conjunction with globally locked-on patterns of incident and shed vortices with respect to the cylinder oscillation. Different states of global lock-on are attainable for different values of timing of the incident vortices.  相似文献

Vortex shedding from an oscillating circular cylinder is studied by numerical solutions of the two-dimensional unsteady Navier–Stokes equations. A physically consistent method is used for the reconstruction of velocity fluxes which arise from discrete equations for the mass and momentum balances. This method ensures a second-order accuracy. Two phenomena are investigated and, in both cases, the cylinder oscillation is forced. The first is the flow induced by the harmonic in-line oscillation of cylinder in water at rest. The Reynolds number is equal to 100 and the Keulegan–Carpenter number is equal to 5. A comparison of phase-averaged velocity vectors between measurements and predictions is presented. Applying the widely used model of Morison to the computed in-line force history, the drag and the inertia coefficients are calculated and compared for different grid levels. Using these to reproduce the force functions, deviations from those originally computed are revealed. The second problem is an investigation of a transversely oscillating cylinder in a uniform flow at fixed Reynolds number equal to 185. The cylinder oscillation frequency ranges between 0·80 and 1·20 of the natural vortex-shedding frequency, and the oscillation amplitude is 20% of the cylinder diameter. As the frequency of excitation of the cylinder increases relative to the inherent vortex formation frequency, the initially formed concentration of vorticity moves closer to the cylinder until a limiting position is reached. At this point, the vorticity concentration abruptly switches to the opposite side of the cylinder. This process induces distinct changes of the topology of the corresponding streamline patterns.  相似文献

Flow around two oscillating cylinders in a side-by-side arrangement at Reynolds number (Re)=185 is simulated using the immersed boundary method. The purpose of this study is to investigate the combined effects of the gap between the two cylinders and their oscillation in the flow. The cylinders oscillate transversely to a uniform cross-flow with a prescribed sinusoidal function in the opposite direction, with the oscillation amplitude equal to 20% of the cylinder diameter. The gap between the two cylinders and the oscillating frequency are chosen as major variables for the parametric study to investigate their influence on the flow pattern. The ratio of mean gap distance between the two oscillating cylinders to the cylinder diameter is chosen to be 0.6, 1.0, 1.4, and 1.8, and the ratio of oscillating frequencies to the natural vortex shedding frequency of a fixed cylinder is 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2. Wake patterns and the drag and lift coefficients are described and compared with those from a single oscillating cylinder and two stationary cylinders. The wake patterns of two oscillating cylinders can be explained by flow mechanisms of two stationary cylinders, a single oscillating cylinder, and their combinations, and are in agreement with classifications of flow over two stationary cylinders presented in previous studies. In the case of two oscillating cylinders, the modulation phenomenon appears from a lower excitation frequency than in a single oscillating cylinder. Generally, oscillating cylinders have higher drag and root-mean-square (r.m.s.) values of drag coefficients than stationary cylinders.  相似文献

A finite volume method for the time dependent viscous incompressible flow around an in-line oscillating circular cylinder at Reynolds number of 200, 855 is presented in this paper. The Navier-Stokes equations in a finite volume form are solved with a moving grid system, based on a time dependent coordinate transformation. To investigate the vortex-shedding characteristics behind the circular cylinder and the effects of Reynolds number and other non-dimensional parameters such as reduced amplitude and reduced frequency, several numerical schemes have been tested with different amplitude and frequency close to Sto and a harmonic at each Reynolds number. Present numerical results indicate several types of vortex shedding mode which is known mainly depending on the reduced frequency and also the reduced amplitude, which is called synchronization or lock-on.  相似文献

The fundamental mechanism of vortex shedding past a curved cylinder has been investigated at a Reynolds number of 100 using three-dimensional spectral/hp computations. Two different configurations are presented herein: in both cases the main component of the geometry is a circular cylinder whose centreline is a quarter of a ring and the inflow direction is parallel to the plane of curvature. In the first set of simulations the cylinder is forced to transversely oscillate at a fixed amplitude, while the oscillation frequency has been varied around the Strouhal value. Both geometries exhibit in-phase vortex shedding, with the vortex cores bent according to the body's curvature, although the wake topology is markedly different. In particular, the configuration that was found to suppress the vortex shedding in absence of forced motion exhibits now a primary instability in the near wake. A second set of simulations has been performed imposing an oscillatory roll to the curved cylinder, which is forced to rotate transversely around the axis of its bottom section. This case shows entirely different wake features from the previous one: the vortex shedding appears to be out-of-phase along the body's span, with straight cores that tend to twist after being shed and manifest a secondary spanwise instability. Further, the damping effect stemming from the transverse planar motion of the part of the cylinder parallel to the flow is no longer present, leading to a positive energy transfer from the fluid to the structure.

A dual-step cylinder is comprised of two cylinders of different diameters. A large diameter cylinder (D) with low aspect ratio (L/D) is attached to the mid-span of a small diameter cylinder (d). The present study investigates the effect of Reynolds number (ReD) and L/D on dual step cylinder wake development for D/d=2, 0.2≤L/D≤3, and two Reynolds numbers, ReD=1050 and 2100. Experiments have been performed in a water flume facility utilizing flow visualization, Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The results show that vortex shedding occurs from both the large and small diameter cylinders for 1≤L/D≤3 at ReD=2100 and 2≤L/D≤3 at ReD=1050. At these conditions, large cylinder vortices predominantly form vortex loops in the wake and small cylinder vortices form half-loop vortex connections. At lower aspect ratios, vortex shedding from the large cylinder ceases, with the dominant frequency in the large cylinder wake attributed to the passage of vortex filaments connecting small cylinder vortices. At these lower aspect ratios, the presence of the large cylinder induces periodic vortex dislocations. Increasing L/D increases the frequency of occurrence of vortex dislocations and decreases the dominant frequency in the large cylinder wake. The identified changes in wake topology are related to substantial variations in the location of boundary layer separation on the large cylinder, and, consequently, changes in the size of the vortex formation region. The results also show that the Reynolds number has a substantial effect on wake vortex shedding frequency, which is more profound than that expected for a uniform cylinder.  相似文献
