Flow around an oscillating cylinder in a subcritical region are numerically studied with a lattice Boltzmann method(LBM). The effects of the Reynolds number, oscillation amplitude and frequency on the vortex wake modes and hydrodynamics forces on the cylinder surface are systematically investigated. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of resonance induced by the cylinder oscillation. The results demonstrate that vortex shedding can be excited extensively under subcritical conditions, and the response region of vibration frequency broadens with increasing Reynolds number and oscillation amplitude. Two distinct types of vortex shedding regimes are observed. The first type of vortex shedding regime(VSR I) is excited at low frequencies close to the intrinsic frequency of flow, and the second type of vortex shedding regime(VSR II)occurs at high frequencies with the Reynolds number close to the critical value. In the VSR I, a pair of alternately rotating vortices are shed in the wake per oscillation cycle, and lock-in/synchronization occurs, while in the VSR II, two alternately rotating vortices are shed for several oscillation cycles, and the vortex shedding frequency is close to that of a stationary cylinder under the critical condition. The excitation mechanisms of the two types of vortex shedding modes are analyzed separately.  相似文献

Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of two elastically coupled circular cylinders in side-by-side arrangement is investigated numerically. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved by the finite element method for simulating the flow and the equation of motion is solved for calculating the vibration. The mass ratio (the ratio of the mass of the cylinder to the displaced fluid mass) is 2 and the Reynolds number is 5000 in the simulations. Simulations are carried out for one symmetric configuration (referred to be Case A) and one asymmetric configuration (referred to be Case B). In both Case A and Case B, the primary response frequencies of the two cylinders are found to be the same both inside and outside the lock-in regimes. Five response regimes are found in both cases and they are the first-mode lock-in regime, the second-mode lock-in regime, the sum-frequency lock-in regime and two transition regimes. When the vibration is transiting from the first- to the second-mode lock-in regimes, the vibration of each cylinder contains both first- and the second-mode natural frequencies, and the vibrations are usually irregular. In the transition regime between the second-mode lock-in and the sum-frequency lock-in regimes, the response frequencies of both cylinders increases with an increase in the reduced velocity until they are close to the sum of the two natural frequencies. In both cases, the lower boundary reduced velocity of the total lock-in regime (the sum of the five lock-in regimes) is about 3 and the upper boundary reduced velocity is about 11 times the first-to-second-mode natural frequency ratio.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the numerical simulation of the flow structure around a square cylinder in a uniform shear flow. The calculations were conducted by solving the unsteady 2D Navier–Stokes equations with a finite difference method. The effect of the shear parameter K of the approaching flow on the vortex-shedding Strouhal number and the force coefficients acting on the square cylinder is investigated in the range K=0·0–0·25 at various Reynolds numbers from 500 to 1500. The computational results are compared with some existing experimental data and previous studies. The effect of shear rate on the Strouhal number and the force acting on the cylinder has a tendency to reduce the oscillation. The Strouhal number, mean drag and amplitude of the fluctuating force tend to decrease as the shear rate increases, but show no significant change at low shear rate. Increasing the Reynolds number decreases the Strouhal number and increases the force acting on the cylinder. At high shear rate the shedding frequencies of the fluctuating drag and lift coefficients are identical. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The salient features of the interaction between a free-surface flow and a cylinder of rectangular cross-section are investigated and discussed. Laboratory-scale experiments are performed in a water channel under various flow conditions and elevations of the cylinder above the channel floor. The flow field is characterized on the basis of time-averaged and fluctuating local velocity measurements. Dynamic loadings on the cylinder are measured by two water-insulated dynamometers placed inside the cylinder structure. Starting from frequency and spectral analyses of the force signals, insights on the relationship between force dominant frequencies and the Strouhal number of the vortex shedding phenomenon are provided. Experimental results highlight the strong influence of the asymmetric configuration imposed by the two different boundary conditions (free surface and channel floor) on (i) the mean force coefficients and (ii) the vortex shedding frequencies. We provide an analysis of the nature of the dependence of average force coefficients on relevant dimensionless groups, i.e., the Reynolds number, normalized flow depth and cylinder submersion.  相似文献

The numerical study of the flow past a circular cylinder forced to oscillate transversely to the incident stream is presented herein, at a fixed Reynolds number equal to 106. The finite element technique was favoured for the solution of the Navier–Stokes equations, in the formulation where the stream function and the vorticity are the field variables. The cylinder oscillation frequency ranged between 0·80 and 1·20 of the natural vortex-shedding frequency, and the oscillation amplitude extended up to 50% of the cylinder diameter. Since the resolution of the characteristics of synchronized wakes is the focus of the study, the first task is the determination of the boundary of the lock-in region. The computation revealed that, when the cylinder oscillation frequency exceeds the frequency of the natural shedding of vortices, the flow is not absolutely periodic at subsequent cycles but a quasiperiodic flow pattern occurs, which creates difficulty in the determination of the lock-in boundary. The time histories of the drag and lift forces for various oscillation parameters are presented, while the vorticity contours were favoured for the numerical flow visualization. The hydrodynamic forces, the phase angle between the lift force and the cylinder displacement, and the parameters of the wake geometry when steady state was reached, are presented in cumulative diagrams. These diagrams indicate the effect of the oscillation parameters on the hydrodynamic forces and on the wake geometry.  相似文献

Aeroelastic instability of a circular cylinder with surface roughness was experimentally studied by free-oscillation tests in a wind tunnel. Flows at high Reynolds numbers could be simulated at relatively low wind velocities, by introducing surface roughness, so as to reduce the value of the critical Reynolds number. The response amplitudes of a roughened cylinder oscillating in the transverse (cross-flow) direction in the flow were measured. The measured range of reduced velocity is about 1·5–8, which includes the critical velocity. The value of a reduced mass-damping parameter (the Scruton number) is constant at about 6. For the aeroelastic instability in the transverse direction, it was found that the oscillation of the roughened cylinder induced by a vortex-excitation is damped down in a small velocity range covering the critical Reynolds number. At Reynolds numbers higher than the critical value, a roughened cylinder vibrates with a large amplitude again, associated with a lock-in phenomenon due to the coincidence of the wake-frequency and the natural frequency of the oscillating cylinder.  相似文献

The occurrence of lock-in, defined as the local synchronization between the vortex shedding frequency and the cross-flow structural vibration frequency, is investigated in the case of a tensioned beam of length to diameter ratio 200, free to move in both the in-line and cross-flow directions, and immersed in a linear shear current. Direct numerical simulation is employed at three Reynolds numbers, from 110 to 1100, so as to include the transition to turbulence in the wake. The Reynolds number influences the response amplitudes, but in all cases we observed similar fluid–structure interaction mechanisms, resulting in high-wavenumber vortex-induced vibrations consisting of a mixture of standing and traveling wave patterns.Lock-in occurs in the high oncoming velocity region, over at least 30% of the cylinder length. In the case of multi-frequency response, at any given spanwise location lock-in is principally established at one of the excited vibration frequencies, usually the locally predominant one. The spanwise patterns of the force and added mass coefficients exhibit different behaviors within the lock-in versus the non-lock-in region. The spanwise zones where the flow provides energy to excite the structural vibrations are located mainly within the lock-in region, while the flow damps the structural vibrations in the non-lock-in region.  相似文献

Vortex shedding from an oscillating circular cylinder is studied by numerical solutions of the two-dimensional unsteady Navier–Stokes equations. A physically consistent method is used for the reconstruction of velocity fluxes which arise from discrete equations for the mass and momentum balances. This method ensures a second-order accuracy. Two phenomena are investigated and, in both cases, the cylinder oscillation is forced. The first is the flow induced by the harmonic in-line oscillation of cylinder in water at rest. The Reynolds number is equal to 100 and the Keulegan–Carpenter number is equal to 5. A comparison of phase-averaged velocity vectors between measurements and predictions is presented. Applying the widely used model of Morison to the computed in-line force history, the drag and the inertia coefficients are calculated and compared for different grid levels. Using these to reproduce the force functions, deviations from those originally computed are revealed. The second problem is an investigation of a transversely oscillating cylinder in a uniform flow at fixed Reynolds number equal to 185. The cylinder oscillation frequency ranges between 0·80 and 1·20 of the natural vortex-shedding frequency, and the oscillation amplitude is 20% of the cylinder diameter. As the frequency of excitation of the cylinder increases relative to the inherent vortex formation frequency, the initially formed concentration of vorticity moves closer to the cylinder until a limiting position is reached. At this point, the vorticity concentration abruptly switches to the opposite side of the cylinder. This process induces distinct changes of the topology of the corresponding streamline patterns.  相似文献

We present a technique for calculating the temperature field in the vicinity of a cylinder in a viscous incompressible fluid flow under given conditions for the heat flux or the cylinder surface temperature. The Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation for the steady heat transfer regime form the basis of the calculations. The numerical calculations are made for three flow regimes about the cylinder, corresponding to Reynolds numbers of 20, 40, and 80. The pressure distribution, voracity, and temperature distributions along the cylinder surface are found. It is known that for a Reynolds number R>1 the calculation of cylinder drag within the framework of the solution of the Oseen and Stokes equations yields a significant deviation from the experimental data. In 1933 Thom first solved this problem [1] on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations. Subsequently several investigators [2, 3] studied the problem of viscous incompressible fluid flow past a cylinder. It has been established that a stable solution of the Navier-Stokes equations exists for R40 and that in this case the calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental data. According to [2], a stable solution also exists for R=44. The possibility of obtaining a steady solution for R>44 is suggested.Analysis of the results of [2] permits suggesting that the questions of constructing a difference scheme with a given order of approximation of the basic differential relations which will permit obtaining the sought solution over the entire range of variation of the problem parameters of interest are still worthy of attention.Calculation of the velocity field in the vicinity of a cylinder also makes possible the calculation of the cylinder temperature regime for given conditions for the heat flux or the temperature on its surface. However, we are familiar only with experience in the analytic solution of several questions of cylinder heat transfer with the surrounding fluid for large R within the framework of boundary layer theory [4].  相似文献

A method of solution for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow past a cylinder is given in which the euquation of continuity is solved by a step-by-step integration procedure at each stage of an interative process. Thus the formulation involves the solution of one first-order and one second-order equation for the velocity components, together with the vorticity transport equation. the equations are solved numerically by h4-accurate methods in the case of steady flow past a circular cylinder in the Reynolds number range 10–100. Results are in satisfactory agreement with recent h4-accurate calculations. An improved approximation to the boundary conditions at large distance is also considered.  相似文献

Self-similar solutions are obtained in [1, 2] to the Navier-Stokes equations in gaps with completely porous boundaries and with Reynolds number tending to infinity. Approximate asymptotic solutions are also known for the Navier-Stokes equations for plane and annular gaps in the neighborhood of the line of spreading of the flow [3, 4]. A number of authors [5–8] have discovered and studied the effect of increase in the stability of a laminar flow regime in channels of the type considered and a significant increase in the Reynolds number of the transition from the laminar regime to the turbulent in comparison with the flow in a pipe with impermeable walls. In the present study a numerical solution is given to the system of Navier-Stokes equations for plane and annular gaps with a single porous boundary in the neighborhood of the line of spreading of the flow on a section in which the values of the local Reynolds number definitely do not exceed the critical values [5–8]. Generalized dependences are obtained for the coefficients of friction and heat transfer on the impermeable boundary. A comparison is made between the solutions so obtained and the exact solutions to the boundary layer equations.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 21–24, January–February, 1987.  相似文献

A fluid flow with a free surface inside a circular cylinder subjected to horizontal, circular oscillation was analyzed theoretically and numerically under the assumption of small-amplitude oscillation and high Reynolds number. It was shown that the nature of the oscillatory flow is of a standing-wave type when projected onto the axial plane and of a progressive-wave type when projected onto the azimuthal plane. The Stokes drift motion in the azimuthal direction and the steady streaming velocity at the edge of the bottom- and side-wall boundary layers are then used in the numerical computation for the steady axisymmetric recirculatory flow outside the boundary layers. We have found that the solutions can be well predicted by asymptotic analysis for the full Navier–Stokes equations in the low streaming-Reynolds-number limit. A simple experiment on flow visualization revealed a good agreement in the surface flow pattern on the bottom wall. It also provided steady recirculatory flows that were not much different from the numerical results on the whole. Received 16 August 1999 and accepted 14 January 2000  相似文献

We present a computational study of the forces on a cylinder oscillating harmonically in the direction perpendicular to a uniform flow. The two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations are solved on a coordinate system fixed on the cylinder. The Reynolds number is equal to 400. Several oscillation frequencies are considered: (a) resonant forcing, (b) forcing at frequency below the natural frequency of the wake, and (c) forcing at frequency above the natural frequency of the wake. Once the flow has reached a statistical steady state, the lift and drag forces on the cylinder are computed. The lift force in particular is decomposed into one component that is in phase with the velocity (excitation force), and one component that is 180 out of phase with the acceleration (inertia or added mass force). The variation of the forces as a function of the amplitude-over-diameter-ratio is studied in detail. It is found that the scaling of the so-called inertia component of the force with the acceleration of the cylinder can lead to serious problems at small amplitudes of oscillation, and that it is overall preferable to scale both components of the force with the dynamic pressure of the fluid. Through extensive flow visualization, it is shown that changes in the state of the flow are related to the abrupt changes of the forces with the amplitude-over-diameter-ratio. Moreover, qualitative differences are found between the results for the below resonance and the resonant or above resonance forcing. The former are characterized by smooth variation of the hydrodynamic force coefficients and spatially ordered vortex streets. The latter are characterized by continuous and sharp, even jump-like, changes of the forces, and a variety of vortex patterns in the wake, resulting for some combinations of frequency and amplitude of oscillation to spatially disordered vortex streets.  相似文献

We study the stability of the flow which forms in a plane channel with influx of an incompressible viscous fluid through its porous parallel walls. Under certain assumptions the study of the stability reduces to the solution of modified Orr-Sommerfeld equation accounting for the transverse component of the main-flow velocity. As a result of numerical integration of this equation we find the dependence of the local critical Reynolds number on the blowing Reynolds number R0, which may be defined by two factors: the variation of the longitudinal velocity profile with R0 and the presence of the transverse velocity component. A qualitative comparison is made of the computational results with experimental data on transition from laminar to turbulent flow regimes in channels with porous walls, which confirms that it is necessary to take into account the effect of the transverse component of the main-flow velocity on the main-flow stability in the problem in question.Flows in channels with porous walls are of interest for hydrodynamic stability theory in view of the fact that they can be described by the exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations by analogy with the known Poiseuille and Couette flows. However, in contrast with the latter, the flows in channels with porous walls (studies in [1], for example) will be nonparallel. The theory of hydrodynamic stability of parallel flows has frequently been applied to nonparallel flows (in the boundary layer, for example). In so doing the nonparallel nature of the flow has been taken into account only by varying the longitudinal velocity component profiles. A study was made in [2, 3] of the effect of the transverse component of the main flow on its stability. In the case of the boundary layer in a compressible gas, a considerable influence of the transverse velocity component on the critical Reynolds number was found in [2] and confirmed experimentally. A strong influence of the transverse velocity component on the instability region was also found in [3] in a study of the flow stability in a boundary layer with suction for an incompressible fluid.  相似文献

This paper presents a linear global stability analysis of the incompressible axisymmetric boundary layer on a circular cylinder. The base flow is parallel to the axis of the cylinder at inflow boundary. The pressure gradient is zero in the streamwise direction. The base flow velocity profile is fully non-parallel and non-similar in nature. The boundary layer grows continuously in the spatial directions. Linearized Navier–Stokes (LNS) equations are derived for the disturbance flow quantities in the cylindrical polar coordinates. The LNS equations along with homogeneous boundary conditions forms a generalized eigenvalues problem. Since the base flow is axisymmetric, the disturbances are periodic in azimuthal direction. Chebyshev spectral collocation method and Arnoldi’s iterative algorithm is used for the solution of the general eigenvalues problem. The global temporal modes are computed for the range of Reynolds numbers and different azimuthal wave numbers. The largest imaginary part of the computed eigenmodes is negative, and hence, the flow is temporally stable. The spatial structure of the eigenmodes shows that the disturbance amplitudes grow in size and magnitude while they are moving towards downstream. The global modes of axisymmetric boundary layer are more stable than that of 2D flat-plate boundary layer at low Reynolds number. However, at higher Reynolds number they approach 2D flat-plate boundary layer. Thus, the damping effect of transverse curvature is significant at low Reynolds number. The wave-like nature of the disturbance amplitudes is found in the streamwise direction for the least stable eigenmodes.  相似文献
