A finite difference simulation method for a viscous flow around a circular cylinder sinusoidally oscillating at low Keulegan-Carpenter numbers is presented. Navier-Stokes equations in finite difference form are solved on a moving grid system, based on a time dependent coordinate transformation. Evolution with time of the flow structures induced by a circular cylinder performing sinusoidal oscillations in a fluid at rest, by means of stream lines, pressure contours and vortex shedding is studied in detail at Keulegan-Carpenter numbers, Kc = 9.4 and 14. The time dependent drag and lift are also explained.  相似文献

Vortex induced vibrations of two equal-sized cylinders in tandem and staggered arrangement placed in uniform incompressible flow is studied. A stabilized finite element formulation is utilized to solve the governing equations. The Reynolds number for these 2D simulations is 1000. The cylinders are separated by 5.5 times the cylinder diameter in the streamwise direction. For the staggered arrangement, the cross-flow spacing between the two cylinders is 0.7 times the cylinder diameter. In this arrangement, the downstream cylinder lies in the wake of the upstream one and therefore experiences an unsteady inflow. The wake looses its temporal periodicity, beyond a few diameters downstream of the front cylinder. The upstream cylinder responds as an isolated single cylinder while the downstream one undergoes disorganized motion. Soft-lock-in is observed in almost all the cases.  相似文献

A numerical study is performed of flow behind a rotationally oscillating circular cylinder in a uniform flow by solving the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The flow behavior in lock-on regime and the timing of vortex formation from the oscillating cylinder are studied. When the frequency of excitation of the cylinder is in the vicinity of the natural vortex formation frequency, a lock-on vortex formation regime appears. As the excitation frequency being increased relative to the natural frequency the initially formed vorticity concentration switches to the opposite side of the cylinder. The effects of oscillating frequency and amplitude on the vortex structures formed in the near wake of the cylinder are also investigated. Based on the present calculated results, some complicated vortex patterns are identified and are consistent with the previous experimental visualizations.  相似文献

Coherent structures in a tripped turbulent boundary layer havebeen analysed by applying a new conditional sampling algorithm tolarge-eddy simulation (LES) data. The space-time development of theevents and structural characteristics were examined. The new conditionalsampling scheme is shown to be very effective in the eduction of thecoherent eddy structures, allowing the simultaneous detection, trackingand averaging of several three-dimensional (3-D) structures. Alignmentof the triggering events in all spatial directions and flip-averaging(spatial reflection of the samples) enhance significantly the extractionof detailed features of the structures. The detection method minimisesthe smearing of the spatial details and avoids imposing artificialsymmetry, which is often intrinsic to other conditional samplingschemes. The results show the existence of cigar-shapedstreamwise vortices which are directly associated with negative pressurefluctuation peaks (positive source term of the pressure Poissonequation). They are inclined at 12° to the wall andtilted laterally at an angle of 7° to the streamwisedirection. The streamwise vortices induce ejections and sweeps throughan advection mechanism due to the tilting or inclination of thevortices. There is no evidence of hairpin vortices in either theconditional averages or instantaneous flow fields. Near-wall shearlayers are found to be related to the positive pressure fluctuationpeaks as a result of complex interactions between ejection and sweepevents. The shear layer structure has an inclination of10°, being located between two tilted, streamwisevortices of opposite direction of rotation. The presentresults are very close to other Direct Numerical Simulation studiesusing different conditional sampling schemes. Conceptual models for thestreamwise vortices and shear layer structures are proposed to accountfor the results.  相似文献

This work aims to investigate the dependence of flow classification on the Reynolds number (Re) for the wake of two staggered cylinders. The Re examined ranges from 1.5×103 to 2.0×104. The pitch ratio, P=P/d examined is 1.2–6.0 (d is the cylinder diameter), and angle (α) is 0–90°, where P is the center-to-center spacing between two cylinders and α is the angle between the incident flow and the line through the cylinder centers. Two single hotwires were used to measure simultaneously the fluctuating streamwise velocities (u) in the vortex streets generated by the two cylinders. The power spectral density functions and the Strouhal numbers were then obtained from the u signals, based on which the flow structure pattern or mode could be determined. Over two hundred configurations of two staggered cylinders have been examined for each Re. It is found that Re has an appreciable effect on the dependence of the flow mode on P and α. The observation is connected to the Re effect on the generic features of a two-cylinder wake such as flow separation, boundary layer thickness, gap flow deflection and vortex formation length.  相似文献

This work presents results of flow around a heated circular cylinder in mixed convection regime and demonstrates that Prandtl number and angle of attack of the incoming flow have a large influence on the characterisation of the flow transition from 2-D to 3-D. Previous studies show that heat transfer can enhance the formation of large 3-D structures in the wake of the cylinder for Reynolds numbers between 75 and 127 and a Richardson number larger than 0.35. This transitional mode is generally identified as “mode E”. In this work, we compare the results for water-based flow (large Prandtl number) with the ones for air-based flows (low Prandtl number). The comparison is carried out at two Reynolds numbers (100 and 150) and at a fixed Richardson number of 1. It shows that at the low Reynolds number of 100 the low Prandtl number flow does not enter into transition. This is caused by the impairment of the baroclinic vorticity production provoked by the spanwise temperature gradient. At low Prandtl number temperature gradients are less steep. For an air-based flow at Reynolds number 150, several Richardson numbers have been simulated. In this situation, the flow enters into transition and exhibits the characteristics of “mode E”, with the development of Λ-shaped structures in the near wake and mushroom-like structures in the far wake. It is also observed that the transition is delayed at Richardson number of 0.5. Simulations are also carried to investigate the effect of the angle of attack on the incoming flow on the development of large coherent structures. When the angle of attack is positive, the development of the wake tends to return to a more bi-dimensional configuration, where large scale coherent structures are impaired. In contrast, when the angle of attack is negative, large scale tri-dimensional structures dominate the flow in the wake, but with a very chaotic behaviour and the regular pattern of zero angle of attack is destroyed. The different behaviour of the flow with the variation of the angle of attack is also related to the baroclinic vorticity production, where new terms appear in the equations, leading to a positive effect of the vorticity production in case of a negative angle of attack and the opposite for a positive angle of attack.  相似文献

Three-dimensional fluid computations have been performed to investigate the flows around two circular cylinders in tandem arrangements at a subcritical Reynolds number, Re=2.2×104. The center-to-center space between the cylinders was varied from twice the cylinder diameter to five times that, and the flows and fluid-dynamic forces obtained from the simulations are compared with the experimental results reported in the literature. Special attention is paid to the characteristics of the vortices shed from the upstream cylinder such as the convection, the impingement onto the downstream cylinder and the interaction with the vortices from the downstream cylinder. The effects of the vortices from the upstream cylinder on the fluid-dynamic forces acting on the downstream cylinder are discussed.  相似文献

The problem of the stability of a circular cylinder in a circulation flow is considered under the condition that the cylinder can perform both free (free cylinder) and forced oscillations (cylinder on a spring). It is shown that this simple system can be unstable in the presence of flow vorticity. Particular cases of vorticity distributions which make it possible to obtain an analytic solution are considered. The case of weak monotonically decreasing vorticity of an arbitrary form is analyzed for an arbitrary relation between the densities of the cylinder and the fluid. It turns out that the instability can develop only for a cylinder whose density is greater than that of the fluid. An approximate method of solving this problem based on consideration of the energy balance in the system is constructed. This makes it possible to obtain an expression for the growth rates and explain the physical mechanism realizing the instability, which is associated with the possibility of energy transfer from perturbations in the critical layer to the cylinder oscillations.  相似文献

The baseline and forced flow around a bluff body with semi-elliptical D-shape was investigated by solving the 2D Navier–Stokes equations at low Reynolds numbers. A D-shape rather than the canonic circular-cylinder was selected due to the fixed separation points in the latter, enabling to study a pure wake rather than boundary-layer control. The correlation between Strouhal and Reynolds numbers, the mean drag, the lift and drag oscillations vs. the Reynolds number and wake structure were investigated and compared to experimental and numerical data. Effects of open-loop forcing, resulting from the influence of zero-mass-flux actuators located at the fixed separation points, were studied at a Reynolds number of 150. Fluidic rather than body motion or volume forcing was selected due to applicability considerations. The motivation for the study was to quantify the changes in the flow field features, as captured by Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis, due to open-loop forcing, inside and outside the “lock-in” regime. This is done in order to evaluate the suitability of low-order-models based on POD modes of this changing flow field, for future feed-back flow control studies. The evolution of the natural and the excited vortices in the Kármán wake were also investigated. The formation and convection regions of the vortex evolution were documented. It was found that the forcing causes an earlier detachment of the vortices from the boundary-layers, but does not affect their circulation or convection speeds. The results of the POD analysis of the near-wake flow show that the influence of the bluff body shape (“D”-shaped versus circular cylinder) on the baseline POD wake modes is small. It was found that the eigenfunctions (mode-shapes) of the POD velocity modes are less sensitive to slot excitation than the vorticity modes. As a result of the open-loop excitation, two types of mode-shape-change were observed: a mode can be exchanged with a lower-energy mode or shifted to a low energy level. In the latter case, the most energetic mode becomes the “actuator” mode. The evolution of one-slot excitation on still fluid (“Synthetic jet”) was studied and compared to published data and to “actuator” modes with external flow present. Based on the current findings, it is hypothesized that the cross-flow velocity POD modes are suitable for feedback control of wake flow using periodic excitation, due to their low sensitivity to the excitation as compared to the streamwise velocity or vorticity modes.  相似文献

A narrow strip is used to control mean and fluctuating forces on a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers from 2.0 × 104 to 1.0 × 105. The axes of the strip and cylinder are parallel. The control parameters are strip width ratio and strip position characterized by angle of attack and distance from the cylinder. Wind tunnel tests show that the vortex shedding from both sides of the cylinder can be suppressed, and mean drag and fluctuating lift on the cylinder can be reduced if the strip is installed in an effective zone downstream of the cylinder. A phenomenon of mono-side vortex shedding is found. The strip-induced local changes of velocity profiles in the near wake of the cylinder are measured, and the relation between base suction and peak value in the power spectrum of fluctuating lift is studied. The control mechanism is then discussed from different points of view. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (10172087 and 10472124). This study elucidates the relation between wake vortex shedding and aerodynamic force fluctuations for a low Reynolds number wing from time resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) experimental measurements. The results reveal a periodic lift and drag variation within the shedding cycle and resolve the frequencies of those fluctuations from a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and power spectral density (PSD) analysis. To show the effect of vortex shedding on the body force fluctuations, the evolution of instantaneous aerodynamic forces is compared to the pressure field of the fluid flow and to the vortical structures in the wake of the airfoil. A six step model describing the vortex-force relation is proposed. It shows that changes in lift such as maximum lift and minimum lift are associated with the detachment of a vortex. It also shows that the minimum or local minimum drag value is obtained at the onset formation of a vortex on the airfoil wake. Similarly, the maximum or local maximum drag is obtained at the onset formation of the saddle on the airfoil wake. The model further explains the asymmetry observed in the unsteady drag force evolution. The model can be used to optimize flow control and fluid-structure interaction applications.  相似文献

An experimental study is conducted on flow past a circular cylinder fitted with a single spanwise wire on its surface. The work investigates the dependency of the critical wire locations on the wire size and Reynolds number, and examines the near wake and vortex shedding characteristics in an effort to advance the understanding of the critical wire effects beyond the existing literature. The Reynolds number is varied from 5000 to 30 000, and the wire diameter is varied from 2.9% to 5.9% of the cylinder diameter. All wires are larger than the boundary-layer thickness forming around a comparable smooth cylinder. Constant Temperature Anemometry and hydrogen bubble visualization are used as the flow diagnostic tools. The frequency and strength of the Karman instability are shown to vary with the wire location at any given Reynolds number nearly in an inverse fashion. For all the Reynolds numbers and wire sizes considered, two types of critical locations are shown to exist on the cylinder surface for the application of a wire. These locations are associated with the attenuation and amplification of the Karman instability, and in accord with the existing literature, are denoted as θc1 and θc2, respectively. The present work reveals that θc2 consists of a wide range of locations which remains unaffected from the wire size and Reynolds number, while θc1 is a relatively distinct location on the cylinder surface and depends on both the Reynolds number and wire size. For a given Reynolds number, increasing the wire size decreases θc1. For a given wire size, increasing the Reynolds number from 5000 to 15 000 increases θc1, and past 15 000, θc1 remains unaffected from the Reynolds number. When a wire is at θc1, even though, for the majority of the time the regular formation of Karman vortices ceases, the present data also reveals intermittent, short time periods where the regular shedding resumes.  相似文献

The main objective of the present experimental study is to analyse the turbulence properties in unsteady flows around bluff body wakes and to provide a database for improvement and validation of turbulence models, concerning the present class of non-equilibrium flows. The flow around a circular cylinder with a low aspect ratio () and a high blockage coefficient () is investigated. This confined environment is used in order to allow direct comparisons with realisable 3D Navier–Stokes computations avoiding ‘infinite’ conditions. The flow is investigated in the critical regime at Reynolds number 140,000. A cartography of the velocity fields in the near wake of the cylinder is obtained by PIV and Stereoscopic PIV techniques. Statistical means and phase-averaged quantities are determined. Furthermore, POD analysis is performed on the data set in order to extract coherent structures of the flow and to compare the results with those obtained by the conditional sampling technique. The Reynolds stresses, the strain-rate and vorticity fields as well as the turbulence production terms are determined.  相似文献

Low-order moments of the increments δu andδv where u and v are the axial and radial velocity fluctuations respectively, have been obtained using single and X-hot wires mainly on the axis of a fully developed pipe flow for different values of the Taylor microscale Reynolds numberR λ. The mean energy dissipation rate〉ε〈 was inferred from the uspectrum after the latter was corrected for the spatial resolution of the hot-wire probes. The corrected Kolmogorov-normalized second-order structure functions show a continuous evolution withR λ. In particular, the scaling exponentζ v , corresponding to the v structure function, continues to increase with R λ in contrast to the nearly unchanged value of ζ u . The Kolmogorov constant for δu shows a smaller rate of increase with R λ than that forδv. The level of agreement with local isotropy is examined in the context of the competing influences ofR λ and the mean shear. There is close but not perfect agreement between the present results on the pipe axis and those on the centreline of a fully developed channel flow. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate by experiments the effect of Reynolds number on a passive scalar (temperature) field in the turbulent wake of a slightly heated circular cylinder. The Reynolds number defined by ReU d/ν (see Nomenclature) is varied from Re= 1200 to Re= 8600. Temperature differential above ambient is chosen to be the passive scalar quantity. Present measurements are conducted using a cold wire (0.63 μm) probe. Results obtained suggest that Reynolds number in general has significant influence on the scalar mixing characteristics in the entire wake flow. Specifically, as Re increases, the mean scalar spreads out more rapidly, the scalar fluctuation intensity increases; however, its variance decays at a lower rate with downstream distance. It is also found that an increase of Re accelerates the streamwise evolution of the scalar probability density function from highly non-Gaussianity to near Gaussianity along the wake centreline. This reflects the reduction in length of the Karman-vortex street caused by an increase of Re.  相似文献

This paper describes flow around a pair of cylinders in tandem arrangement with a downstream cylinder being fixed or forced to oscillate transversely. A sinusoidal parietal velocity is applied to simulate cylinder oscillation. Time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite element method. It is shown that there exist two distinct flow regimes: ‘vortex suppression regime’ and ‘vortex formation regime’. Averaged vortex lengths between the two cylinders, pressure variations at back and front stagnant points as well as circumferential pressure profiles of the downstream cylinder are found completely different in the two regimes and, thus, can be used to identify the flow regimes. It is shown that frequency selection in the wake of the oscillating cylinder is a result of non-linear interaction among vortex wakes upstream and downstream of the second cylinder and its forced oscillation. Increasing cylinder spacing results in a stronger oscillatory incident flow upstream of the second cylinder and, thus, a smaller synchronization zone.  相似文献
