We study long-time dynamics of abstract nonlinear second-order evolution equations with a nonlinear damping. Under suitable hypotheses we prove existence of a compact global attractor and finiteness of its fractal dimension. We also show that any solution is stabilized to an equilibrium and estimate the rate of the convergence which, in turn, depends on the behaviour at the origin of the function describing the dissipation. If the damping is bounded below by a linear function, this rate is exponential. Our approach is based on far reaching generalizations of the Ceron–Lopes theorem on asymptotic compactness and Ladyzhenskayas theorem on the dimension of invariant sets. An application of our results to nonlinear damped wave and plate equations allow us to obtain new results pertaining to structure and properties of global attractors for nonlinear waves and plates.  相似文献

We consider a semilinear parabolic equation with a nonlinear non-dissipative boundary condition. In the one-dimensional case we describe bifurcation diagrams for positive and sign-changing equilibria and connecting orbits between these equilibria. We also show that the number of sign-changing stationary solutions strongly depends on the spatial dimension. The results are based on new a priori estimates of global solutions.  相似文献

The delay differential equation, (t)=–x(t)+f(x(t–1)), with >0 and a real function f satisfying f(0)=0 and f>0 models a system governed by delayed positive feedback and instantaneous damping. Recently the geometric, topological, and dynamical properties of a three-dimensional compact invariant set were described in the phase space C=C([–1, 0], ) of initial data for solutions of the equation. In this paper, for a set of and f which include examples from neural network theory, we show that this three-dimensional set is the global attractor, i.e., the compact invariant set which attracts all bounded subsets of C. The proof involves, among others, results on uniqueness and absence of periodic orbits.  相似文献

First, some linear techniques in multivariate time-series analysis in EEG research are reviewed to highlight the problem of estimating the dimensionality of the state space (embedding dimension), the reconstruction of an attractor, and the evaluation of invariant properties of the attractor. The traditional linear techniques included the usual spectral and cospectral measures of power, phase, and coherence to which stepwise discriminant analysis was applied for canonical representation of the attractor. Then, some traditional nonlinear techniques of attractor reconstruction and dimensional analysis which use the time-lagged univariate approach of Ruelle and Takens (Takens, 1981) are reviewed. Next, updates and multivariate generalizations that use singular-value decomposition (Broomhead & King, 1986) are reviewed. Finally, Stewart's (1995, 1996) multivariate generalization of the method of false nearest neighbors (Abarbanel, Brown, Sidorowich, & Tsimring, 1993; Kennel, Brown, & Abarbanel, 1992) is reviewed. These are particularly relevant for evaluating multivariate coherence in research on the complex cooperative dynamical systems found in neuroscience, psychology, and social science when time series of sufficient length are investigated.  相似文献

众所周知,平面自治系统即使具有光滑非线性存在,系统也不会出现复杂的动力学行为。本文研究这样的系统存在时滞时,时滞量对系统的动力学行为的影响。通过对一个平面自治非线性系统引入时滞反馈,得到数学模型。利用泛函分析和平均法建立系统平衡态随时滞量变化的失稳机理,研究表明:时滞量平面自治系统动力学行为的影响是本质的.时滞量不但可以使系统出现Hopf分岔,产生周期振动。而且还可以使系统出现多稳态的周期运动或周期吸引子,这些共存的吸引子相碰是导致系统复杂的动力学行为,包括概周期和混沌运动。  相似文献

We continue work by the second author and co-workers onsolitary wave solutions of nonlinear beam equations and their stabilityand interaction properties. The equations are partial differentialequations that are fourth-order in space and second-order in time.First, we highlight similarities between the intricate structure ofsolitary wave solutions for two different nonlinearities; apiecewise-linear term versus an exponential approximation to thisnonlinearity which was shown in earlier work to possess remarkablystable solitary waves. Second, we compare two different numericalmethods for solving the time dependent problem. One uses a fixed griddiscretization and the other a moving mesh method. We use these methodsto shed light on the nonlinear dynamics of the solitary waves. Earlywork has reported how even quite complex solitary waves appear stable,and that stable waves appear to interact like solitons. Here we show twofurther effects. The first effect is that large complex waves can, as aresult of roundoff error, spontaneously decompose into two simplerwaves, a process we call fission. The second is the fusion of twostable waves into another plus a small amount of radiation.  相似文献

This paper deals with nonlinear oscillations of conservative single-degree-of-freedom systems with odd nonlinearity. By combining the linearization of the governing equation with the method of harmonic balance, we establish two approximate analytic formulas for the period. These two formulas are valid for small as well as large amplitudes of oscillation. Three examples are used to illustrate that the proposed formulas can give very satisfactory approximate results. Sommario. Questo lavoro tratta il problema delle oscillazioni nonlineari di sistemi conservativi ad un grado di libertà con nonlinearità simmetriche. Combinando opportunamente la tecnica di linearizzazione dellequazione del moto con il metodo del bilancio armonico si perviene a due formule analitiche approssimate per il periodo. Le formule ottenute sono valide sia per piccole che per grandi ampiezze di oscillazione. This paper presents an adaptive regulation scheme for a class ofordinary nonlinear nonautonomous second-order differential equationswhich includes as particular cases a number of particular differentialequations which occur in applications. The unforced reference model isproposed to be a stable differential parametrization within the generalclass dealt with. Therefore, some sufficient Lyapunov's stabilityconditions for such a class are previously investigated which can beused, in particular, to set an appropriate reference model. Theresulting closed-loop adaptive scheme is proved to be stable and itinvolves a parameter estimation scheme of least-squares type which isproved to possess all suitable properties in terms of estimatesboundedness and asymptotic convergence of the estimates to finite limitsas well as time-integrability of the squared adaptation error.  相似文献

We classify the weak traveling wave solutions for a class of one-dimensional non-linear shallow water wave models. The equations are shown to admit smooth, peaked, and cusped solutions, as well as more exotic waves such as stumpons and composite waves. We also explain how some previously studied traveling wave solutions of the models fit into this classification.  相似文献
