In this paper, we study the properties of the penalized Fischer-Burmeister (FB) second-order cone (SOC) complementarity function. We show that the function possesses similar desirable properties of the FB SOC complementarity function for local convergence; for example, with the function the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP) can be reformulated as a (strongly) semismooth system of equations, and the corresponding nonsmooth Newton method has local quadratic convergence without strict complementarity of solutions. In addition, the penalized FB merit function has bounded level sets under a rather weak condition which can be satisfied by strictly feasible monotone SOCCPs or SOCCPs with the Cartesian R 01-property, although it is not continuously differentiable. Numerical results are included to illustrate the theoretical considerations.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend the one-parametric class of merit functions proposed by Kanzow and Kleinmichel [C. Kanzow, H. Kleinmichel, A new class of semismooth Newton-type methods for nonlinear complementarity problems, Comput. Optim. Appl. 11 (1998) 227-251] for the nonnegative orthant complementarity problem to the general symmetric cone complementarity problem (SCCP). We show that the class of merit functions is continuously differentiable everywhere and has a globally Lipschitz continuous gradient mapping. From this, we particularly obtain the smoothness of the Fischer-Burmeister merit function associated with symmetric cones and the Lipschitz continuity of its gradient. In addition, we also consider a regularized formulation for the class of merit functions which is actually an extension of one of the NCP function classes studied by [C. Kanzow, Y. Yamashita, M. Fukushima, New NCP functions and their properties, J. Optim. Theory Appl. 97 (1997) 115-135] to the SCCP. By exploiting the Cartesian P-properties for a nonlinear transformation, we show that the class of regularized merit functions provides a global error bound for the solution of the SCCP, and moreover, has bounded level sets under a rather weak condition which can be satisfied by the monotone SCCP with a strictly feasible point or the SCCP with the joint Cartesian R02-property. All of these results generalize some recent important works in [J.-S. Chen, P. Tseng, An unconstrained smooth minimization reformulation of the second-order cone complementarity problem, Math. Program. 104 (2005) 293-327; C.-K. Sim, J. Sun, D. Ralph, A note on the Lipschitz continuity of the gradient of the squared norm of the matrix-valued Fischer-Burmeister function, Math. Program. 107 (2006) 547-553; P. Tseng, Merit function for semidefinite complementarity problems, Math. Program. 83 (1998) 159-185] under a unified framework.  相似文献

A popular approach to solving the nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) is to reformulate it as the global minimization of a certain merit function over ℝn. A popular choice of the merit function is the squared norm of the Fischer-Burmeister function, shown to be smooth over ℝn and, for monotone NCP, each stationary point is a solution of the NCP. This merit function and its analysis were subsequently extended to the semidefinite complementarity problem (SDCP), although only differentiability, not continuous differentiability, was established. In this paper, we extend this merit function and its analysis, including continuous differentiability, to the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP). Although SOCCP is reducible to a SDCP, the reduction does not allow for easy translation of the analysis from SDCP to SOCCP. Instead, our analysis exploits properties of the Jordan product and spectral factorization associated with the second-order cone. We also report preliminary numerical experience with solving DIMACS second-order cone programs using a limited-memory BFGS method to minimize the merit function. We investigate some properties related to the generalized Newton method for the Fischer-Burmeister (FB) function over second-order cones, which allows us to reformulate the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP) as a semismooth system of equations. Specifically, we characterize the B-subdifferential of the FB function at a general point and study the condition for every element of the B-subdifferential at a solution being nonsingular. In addition, for the induced FB merit function, we establish its coerciveness and provide a weaker condition than Chen and Tseng (Math. Program. 104:293–327, 2005) for each stationary point to be a solution, under suitable Cartesian P-properties of the involved mapping. By this, a damped Gauss-Newton method is proposed, and the global and superlinear convergence results are obtained. Numerical results are reported for the second-order cone programs from the DIMACS library, which verify the good theoretical properties of the method. We establish that the Fischer–Burmeister (FB) complementarity function and the natural residual (NR) complementarity function associated with the symmetric cone have the same growth, in terms of the classification of Euclidean Jordan algebras. This, on the one hand, provides an affirmative answer to the second open question proposed by Tseng (J Optim Theory Appl 89:17–37, 1996) for the matrix-valued FB and NR complementarity functions, and on the other hand, extends the third important inequality of Lemma 3.1 in the aforementioned paper to the setting of Euclidean Jordan algebras. It is worthwhile to point out that the proof is surprisingly simple.  相似文献

In this paper we show the solvability of the expected residual minimization (ERM) formulation for the general stochastic linear complementarity problem (SLCP) under mild assumptions. The properties of the ERM formulation are dependent on the choice of NCP functions. We focus on the ERM formulations defined by the “min” NCP function and the penalized FB function, both of which are nonconvex programs on the nonnegative orthant.  相似文献

In the solution methods of the symmetric cone complementarity problem (SCCP), the squared norm of a complementarity function serves naturally as a merit function for the problem itself or the equivalent system of equations reformulation. In this paper, we study the growth behavior of two classes of such merit functions, which are induced by the smooth EP complementarity functions and the smooth implicit Lagrangian complementarity function, respectively. We show that, for the linear symmetric cone complementarity problem (SCLCP), both the EP merit functions and the implicit Lagrangian merit function are coercive if the underlying linear transformation has the P-property; for the general SCCP, the EP merit functions are coercive only if the underlying mapping has the uniform Jordan P-property, whereas the coerciveness of the implicit Lagrangian merit function requires an additional condition for the mapping, for example, the Lipschitz continuity or the assumption as in (45). The symmetric cone complementarity problem (denoted by SCCP) is a broad class of optimization problems, which contains the semidefinite complementarity problem, the second-order cone complementarity problem, and the nonlinear complementarity problem. In this paper we first extend the smoothing function proposed by Huang et al. (Sci. China 44:1107–1114, 2001) for the nonlinear complementarity problem to the context of symmetric cones and show that it is coercive under suitable assumptions. Based on this smoothing function, a smoothing-type algorithm, which is a modified version of the Qi-Sun-Zhou method (Qi et al. in Math. Program. 87:1–35, 2000), is proposed for solving the SCCP. By using the theory of Euclidean Jordan algebras, we prove that the proposed algorithm is globally and locally quadratically convergent under suitable assumptions. Preliminary numerical results for some second-order cone complementarity problems are reported which indicate that the proposed algorithm is effective.  相似文献

We consider a class of derivative-free descent methods for solving the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP). The algorithm is based on the Fischer–Burmeister (FB) unconstrained minimization reformulation of the SOCCP, and utilizes a convex combination of the negative partial gradients of the FB merit function ψFB as the search direction. We establish the global convergence results of the algorithm under monotonicity and the uniform Jordan P-property, and show that under strong monotonicity the merit function value sequence generated converges at a linear rate to zero. Particularly, the rate of convergence is dependent on the structure of second-order cones. Numerical comparisons are also made with the limited BFGS method used by Chen and Tseng (An unconstrained smooth minimization reformulation of the second-order cone complementarity problem, Math. Program. 104(2005), pp. 293–327), which confirm the theoretical results and the effectiveness of the algorithm.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a predictor-corrector smoothing Newton method for solving nonlinear symmetric cone complementarity problems (SCCP) based on the symmetrically perturbed smoothing function. Under a mild assumption, the solution set of the problem concerned is just nonempty, we show that the proposed algorithm is globally and locally quadratic convergent. Also, the algorithm finds a maximally complementary solution to the SCCP. Numerical results for second order cone complementarity problems (SOCCP), a special case of SCCP, show that the proposed algorithm is effective.  相似文献

We investigate a one-parametric class of merit functions for the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP) which is closely related to the popular Fischer–Burmeister (FB) merit function and natural residual merit function. In fact, it will reduce to the FB merit function if the involved parameter τ equals 2, whereas as τ tends to zero, its limit will become a multiple of the natural residual merit function. In this paper, we show that this class of merit functions enjoys several favorable properties as the FB merit function holds, for example, the smoothness. These properties play an important role in the reformulation method of an unconstrained minimization or a nonsmooth system of equations for the SOCCP. Numerical results are reported for some convex second-order cone programs (SOCPs) by solving the unconstrained minimization reformulation of the KKT optimality conditions, which indicate that the FB merit function is not the best. For the sparse linear SOCPs, the merit function corresponding to τ=2.5 or 3 works better than the FB merit function, whereas for the dense convex SOCPs, the merit function with τ=0.1, 0.5 or 1.0 seems to have better numerical performance.  相似文献

In last decades, there has been much effort on the solution and the analysis of the nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) by reformulating NCP as an unconstrained minimization involving an NCP function. In this paper, we propose a family of new NCP functions, which include the Fischer-Burmeister function as a special case, based on a p-norm with p being any fixed real number in the interval (1,+∞), and show several favorable properties of the proposed functions. In addition, we also propose a descent algorithm that is indeed derivative-free for solving the unconstrained minimization based on the merit functions from the proposed NCP functions. Numerical results for the test problems from MCPLIB indicate that the descent algorithm has better performance when the parameter p decreases in (1,+∞). This implies that the merit functions associated with p∈(1,2), for example p=1.5, are more effective in numerical computations than the Fischer-Burmeister merit function, which exactly corresponds to p=2. Recently Tseng (Math Program 83:159–185, 1998) extended a class of merit functions, proposed by Luo and Tseng (A new class of merit functions for the nonlinear complementarity problem, in Complementarity and Variational Problems: State of the Art, pp. 204–225, 1997), for the nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) to the semidefinite complementarity problem (SDCP) and showed several related properties. In this paper, we extend this class of merit functions to the second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP) and show analogous properties as in NCP and SDCP cases. In addition, we study another class of merit functions which are based on a slight modification of the aforementioned class of merit functions. Both classes of merit functions provide an error bound for the SOCCP and have bounded level sets.Member of Mathematics Division, National Center for Theoretical Sciences, Taipei Office. In this paper, we propose a new generalized penalized Fischer–Burmeister merit function, and show that the function possesses a system of favorite properties. Moreover, for the merit function, we establish the boundedness of level set under a weaker condition. We also propose a derivative-free algorithm for nonlinear complementarity problems with a nonmonotone line search. More specifically, we show that the proposed algorithm is globally convergent and has a locally linear convergence rate. Numerical comparisons are also made with the merit function used by Chen (J Comput Appl Math 232:455–471, 2009), which confirm the superior behaviour of the new merit function.  相似文献

This paper is devoted to the eigenvalue complementarity problem (EiCP) with symmetric real matrices. This problem is equivalent to finding a stationary point of a differentiable optimization program involving the Rayleigh quotient on a simplex (Queiroz et al., Math. Comput. 73, 1849–1863, 2004). We discuss a logarithmic function and a quadratic programming formulation to find a complementarity eigenvalue by computing a stationary point of an appropriate merit function on a special convex set. A variant of the spectral projected gradient algorithm with a specially designed line search is introduced to solve the EiCP. Computational experience shows that the application of this algorithm to the logarithmic function formulation is a quite efficient way to find a solution to the symmetric EiCP.  相似文献

Let f and g be continuously differentiable functions on R n . The nonlinear complementarity problem NCP(f,g), 0≤f(x)⊥g(x)≥0, arises in many applications including discrete Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations and nonsmooth Dirichlet problems. A popular method to find a solution of the NCP(f,g) is the generalized Newton method which solves an equivalent system of nonsmooth equations F(x)=0 derived by an NCP function. In this paper, we present a sufficient and necessary condition for F to be Fréchet differentiable, when F is defined by the “min” NCP function, the Fischer-Burmeister NCP function or the penalized Fischer-Burmeister NCP function. Moreover, we give an explicit formula of an element in the Clarke generalized Jacobian of F defined by the “min” NCP function, and the B-differential of F defined by other two NCP functions. The explicit formulas for generalized differentials of F lead to sharper global error bounds for the NCP(f,g).  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new smooth function that possesses a property not satisfied by the existing smooth functions. Based on this smooth function, we discuss the existence and continuity of the smoothing path for solving theP 0 function nonlinear complementarity problem ( NCP). Using the characteristics of the new smooth function, we investigate the boundedness of the iteration sequence generated by the non-interior continuation methods for solving theP 0 function NCP under the assumption that the solution set of the NCP is nonempty and bounded. We show that the assumption that the solution set of the NCP is nonempty and bounded is weaker than those required by a few existing continuation methods for solving the NCP  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new class of two-parametric penalized function, which includes the penalized minimum function and the penalized Fischer-Burmeister flmc- tion over symmetric cone complementarity problems. We propose that this class of function is a class of complementarity functions(C-function). Moreover, its merit function has bounded level set under a weak condition.  相似文献

There recently has been much interest in smoothing Newton method for solving nonlinear complementarity problems. We extend such method to symmetric cone complementarity problems (SCCP). In this paper, we first investigate a one-parametric class of smoothing functions in the context of symmetric cones, which contains the Fischer–Burmeister smoothing function and the CHKS smoothing function as special cases. Then we propose a smoothing Newton method for the SCCP based on the one-parametric class of smoothing functions. For the proposed method, besides the classical step length, we provide a new step length and the global convergence is obtained. Finally, preliminary numerical results are reported, which show the effectiveness of the two step lengthes in the algorithm and provide efficient domains of the parameter for the complementarity problems.  相似文献
