Denote by σ the subspace of Hilbert space {(xi)?l2:xi=0 for all but finitely many i}. Examples of cell-like decompositions of σ are constructed that have decomposition spaces that are not homeomorphic to σ. At one extreme is a cell-like decomposition G of σ produced using ghastly finite dimensional examples such that the decomposition space σ?G contains no embedded 2-cell but (σ?GR is homeomorphic to σ. At the other extreme is a cell-like decomposition G of σ satisfying: (a) the nondegeneracy set NG={g?G:g≠point} consists of countably many arcs (necessarily tame); (b) the nondegeneracy set NG is a closed subset of the decomposition space σ?G; (c) each map f:B2σ?G of a 2-cell into σ?G can be approximated arbitrarily closely by an embedding; (d) σ?G is not homeomorphic to σ but (σ?GR is homeomorphic to σ. The fact that both conditions (a) and (b) can be satisfied (and have (d) hold) is directly attributable to σ’s incompleteness as a topological space.  相似文献

In this article the existence of one solution for a class of asymptotically periodic equations in the euclidean space is established. The basic tools employed here are the Mountain Pass Theorem and the Concentration-Compactness Principle. By using a change of variable, the quasilinear equation is reduced to a semilinear equation, whose respective associated functional is well defined in H1(RN) and satisfies the geometric hypotheses of the Mountain Pass Theorem.  相似文献

We show that a compact space is I-favorable if, and only if it can be represented as the limit of a σ-complete inverse system of compact metrizable spaces with skeletal bonding maps. We also show that any completely regular I-favorable space can be embedded as a dense subset of the limit of a σ-complete inverse system of separable metrizable spaces with skeletal bonding maps.  相似文献

For X a metrizable space and (Y,ρ) a metric space, with Y pathwise connected, we compute the density of (C(X,(Y,ρ)),σ)—the space of all continuous functions from X to (Y,ρ), endowed with the supremum metric σ. Also, for (X,d) a metric space and (Y,‖⋅‖) a normed space, we compute the density of (UC((X,d),(Y,ρ)),σ) (the space of all uniformly continuous functions from (X,d) to (Y,ρ), where ρ is the metric induced on Y by ‖⋅‖). We also prove that the latter result extends only partially to the case where (Y,ρ) is an arbitrary pathwise connected metric space. To carry such an investigation out, the notions of generalized compact and generalized totally bounded metric space, introduced by the author and A. Barbati in a former paper, turn out to play a crucial rôle. Moreover, we show that the first-mentioned concept provides a precise characterization of those metrizable spaces which attain their extent.  相似文献

Let G be a topological group with the identity element e. Given a space X, we denote by Cp(X,G) the group of all continuous functions from X to G endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence, and we say that X is: (a) G-regular if, for each closed set FX and every point xX?F, there exist fCp(X,G) and gG?{e} such that f(x)=g and f(F)⊆{e}; (b) G?-regular provided that there exists gG?{e} such that, for each closed set FX and every point xX?F, one can find fCp(X,G) with f(x)=g and f(F)⊆{e}. Spaces X and Y are G-equivalent provided that the topological groups Cp(X,G) and Cp(Y,G) are topologically isomorphic. We investigate which topological properties are preserved by G-equivalence, with a special emphasis being placed on characterizing topological properties of X in terms of those of Cp(X,G). Since R-equivalence coincides with l-equivalence, this line of research “includes” major topics of the classical Cp-theory of Arhangel'ski? as a particular case (when G=R).We introduce a new class of TAP groups that contains all groups having no small subgroups (NSS groups). We prove that: (i) for a given NSS group G, a G-regular space X is pseudocompact if and only if Cp(X,G) is TAP, and (ii) for a metrizable NSS group G, a G?-regular space X is compact if and only if Cp(X,G) is a TAP group of countable tightness. In particular, a Tychonoff space X is pseudocompact (compact) if and only if Cp(X,R) is a TAP group (of countable tightness). Demonstrating the limits of the result in (i), we give an example of a precompact TAP group G and a G-regular countably compact space X such that Cp(X,G) is not TAP.We show that Tychonoff spaces X and Y are T-equivalent if and only if their free precompact Abelian groups are topologically isomorphic, where T stays for the quotient group R/Z. As a corollary, we obtain that T-equivalence implies G-equivalence for every Abelian precompact group G. We establish that T-equivalence preserves the following topological properties: compactness, pseudocompactness, σ-compactness, the property of being a Lindelöf Σ-space, the property of being a compact metrizable space, the (finite) number of connected components, connectedness, total disconnectedness. An example of R-equivalent (that is, l-equivalent) spaces that are not T-equivalent is constructed.  相似文献

We prove that under a=c (in particular, under Martin's Axiom) there exists a regular σ-compact sequential space which is not hereditarily weakly Whyburn. This gives a consistent solution to a question, first formulated by V.V. Tkachuk and I.V. Yashenko, and then raised again by F. Obersnel.  相似文献

In this paper we give a realization of some symmetric space G/K as a closed submanifold P of G. We also give several equivalent representations of the submanifold P. Some properties of the set gKP are also discussed, where gK is a coset space in G.  相似文献

We study the space of pictures of a graph G in complex projective d-space. The main result is that the homology groups (with integer coefficients) of are completely determined by the Tutte polynomial of G. One application is a criterion in terms of the Tutte polynomial for independence in the d-parallel matroids studied in combinatorial rigidity theory. For certain special graphs called orchards, the picture space is smooth and has the structure of an iterated projective bundle. We give a Borel presentation of the cohomology ring of the picture space of an orchard, and use this presentation to develop an analogue of the classical Schubert calculus.  相似文献

Within the class of Tychonoff spaces, and within the class of topological groups, most of the natural questions concerning ‘productive closure’ of the subclasses of countably compact and pseudocompact spaces are answered by the following three well-known results: (1) [ZFC] There is a countably compact Tychonoff space X such that X × X is not pseudocompact; (2) [ZFC] The product of any set of pseudocompact topological groups is pseudocompact; and (3) [ZFC+ MA] There are countably compact topological groups G0, G1 such that G0 × G1 is not countably compact. In this paper we consider the question of ‘productive closure” in the intermediate class of homogeneous spaces. Our principal result, whose proof leans heavily on a simple, elegant result of V.V. Uspenski?, is this: In ZFC there are pseudocompact, homogeneous spaces X0, X1 such that X0 × X1 is not pseudocompact; if in addition MA is assumed, the spaces Xi may be chosen countably compact. Our construction yields an unexpected corollary in a different direction: Every compact space embeds as a retract in a countably compact, homogeneous space. Thus for every cardinal number α there is a countably compact, homogeneous space whose Souslin number exceeds α.  相似文献

Results of Henriksen and Johnson, for archimedean f-rings with identity, and of Aron and Hager, for archimedean ?-groups with unit, relating uniform completeness to order-convexity of a representation in a D(X) (the lattice of almost real continuous functions on the space X) are extended to situations without identity or unit. For an archimedean ?-group, G, we show: if G admits any representation G?D(X) in which G is order-convex, then G is divisible and relatively uniformly complete. A converse to this would seem to require some sort of canonical representation of G, which seems not to exist in the ?-group case. But for a reduced archimedean f-ring, A, there is the Johnson representation A?D(XA), and we show: A is divisible, relatively uniformly complete and square-dominated if and only if A is order-convex in D(XA) and square-root-closed. Also, we expand on the situation with unit, where we have the Yosida representation, G?D(YG): if G is divisible, relatively uniformly complete, and the unit is a near unit, then G is order-convex in D(YG).  相似文献

We deal with the existence of positive solutions u decaying to zero at infinity, for a class of equations of Lane-Emden-Fowler type involving a gradient term. One of the main points is that the differential equation contains a semilinear term σ(u) where σ:(0,)→(0,) is a smooth function which can be both unbounded at infinity and singular at zero. Our technique explores symmetry arguments as well as lower and upper solutions.  相似文献

We consider the optimization problem of minimizing in the class of functions W1,G(Ω) with , for a given φ0?0 and bounded. W1,G(Ω) is the class of weakly differentiable functions with . The conditions on the function G allow for a different behavior at 0 and at ∞. We prove that every solution u is locally Lipschitz continuous, that it is a solution to a free boundary problem and that the free boundary, Ω∩∂{u>0}, is a regular surface. Also, we introduce the notion of weak solution to the free boundary problem solved by the minimizers and prove the Lipschitz regularity of the weak solutions and the C1,α regularity of their free boundaries near “flat” free boundary points.  相似文献

In the periodic case, it is proved that the Cauchy problem for the generalized Korteweg–de Vries equation (gKdV) is locally well-posed in a class of analytic functions that can be extended holomorphically in a symmetric strip of the complex plane around the x-axis. Thus, the uniform analyticity radius of the solution does not change as time progresses. Also, information about the regularity of the solution in the time variable is provided.  相似文献

Let σ be a complete simplicial fan in finite dimensional real Euclidean space V, and let G be a cyclic subgroup of GL(V) which acts properly on σ. We show that the representation of G carried by the cohomology of Xσ, the toric variety associated to σ, is a permutation representation.  相似文献

We prove that a Hausdorff space X is very I-favorable if and only if X is the almost limit space of a σ-complete inverse system consisting of (not necessarily Hausdorff) second countable spaces and surjective d-open bonding maps. It is also shown that the class of Tychonoff very I-favorable spaces with respect to the co-zero sets coincides with the d-openly generated spaces.  相似文献

The energy method in the Fourier space is useful in deriving the decay estimates for problems in the whole space Rn. In this paper, we study half space problems in and develop the energy method in the partial Fourier space obtained by taking the Fourier transform with respect to the tangential variable xRn−1. For the variable x1R+ in the normal direction, we use L2 space or weighted L2 space. We apply this energy method to the half space problem for damped wave equations with a nonlinear convection term and prove the asymptotic stability of planar stationary waves by showing a sharp convergence rate for t→∞. The result obtained in this paper is a refinement of the previous one in Ueda et al. (2008) [13].  相似文献

In this paper we examine the role of the β-space property (equivalently of the MCM-property) in generalized ordered (GO-)spaces and, more generally, in monotonically normal spaces. We show that a GO-space is metrizable iff it is a β-space with a Gδ-diagonal and iff it is a quasi-developable β-space. That last assertion is a corollary of a general theorem that any β-space with a σ-point-finite base must be developable. We use a theorem of Balogh and Rudin to show that any monotonically normal space that is hereditarily monotonically countably metacompact (equivalently, hereditarily a β-space) must be hereditarily paracompact, and that any generalized ordered space that is perfect and hereditarily a β-space must be metrizable. We include an appendix on non-Archimedean spaces in which we prove various results announced without proof by Nyikos.  相似文献

In this paper we study the existence of bounded weak solutions for some nonlinear Dirichlet problems in unbounded domains. The principal part of the operator behaves like the p-laplacian operator, and the lower order terms, which depend on the solution u and its gradient u, have a power growth of order p–1 with respect to these variables, while they are bounded in the x variable. The source term belongs to a Lebesgue space with a prescribed asymptotic behaviour at infinity.  相似文献

Based upon recent results characterizing Q-manifolds, this paper sets forth an explicit method for retooling certain pathology arising in finite dimensional manifolds as comparable pathology in the Hilbert cube Q. In particular, with reference to an example constructed by the author and J.J. Walsh, it presents an upper semicontinuous decomposition G of Q into points and a null sequence of cellular arcs such that the associated decomposition space is not a Q-manifold, and it also provides a new procedure for embedding finite dimensional compacta as wild subsets of Q.  相似文献

We prove uniform decay estimates at infinity for solutions 0?uLp of the semilinear elliptic inequality Δu+auσ+bu?0, a,b?0, σ?1, in the presence of a Sobolev inequality (with potential term). This gives a unified point of view in the investigation of different geometric questions. In particular, we present applications to the study of the topology at infinity of parallel mean curvature submanifolds, to the non-compact Yamabe problem, and to estimate the decay rate of the traceless Ricci tensor of conformally flat manifolds.  相似文献
