In this article, the synthesis and self‐assembly of a novel well‐defined biocompatible amphiphilic POEGMA‐PDMS‐POEGMA triblock copolymer were studied. The copolymer was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) using α,ω‐dibromo polydimethylsiloxane macroinitiator (Br‐PDMS‐Br). Br‐PDMS‐Br was synthesized through the esterification of α,ω‐hydroxypropyl polydimethylsiloxane and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. The structures of the copolymers were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The copolymers showed reversible aggregation in response to temperature cycles with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between 61 and 66 °C, as determined by ultraviolet‐visible spectrophotometry and dynamic light scattering. The LCST values increased in proportion to the length of the hydrophilic block and were lower than that of the POEGMA homopolymer. The self‐assembly behavior of the copolymers in aqueous solution was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The critical micelle concentration value (1.08–0.26 10?6 mol L?1) decreased as the length of the POEGMA chain increased. The POEGMA‐PDMS‐POEGMA copolymers can easily self‐assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous solution. Such biocompatible block copolymers may be attractive candidates as ‘‘smart'' thermo‐responsive drug delivery systems. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In this paper, N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) was synthesized by acrylonitrile and isopropanol. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) was prepared by a chemical method. The dependence of its swelling behavior on temperature was studied. Results showed that PNIPA hydrogel was a temperature‐sensitive gel. Its LCST (lower critical solution temperature) was about 32 °C, and its swelling ratio (at 20 °C) was about 17–18. Sodium acrylate (SA) and sodium methylacrylate (SMA) were copolymerized with NIPA respectively. Equilibrium swelling ratios of the copolymer hydrogels at lower temperature were two to three times that of PNIPA. The LCST of the copolymer hydrogels could be controlled between 32 and 45 °C by adjusting the content of SA or SMA. Kinetics of P(NIPA‐co‐SA) hydrogels, whether swelling or shrinking processes, were in good agreement with apparent second order kinetic equations. Several experiments were designed to separate aqueous bovine serum albumin solution using the hydrogels prepared above. The separation efficiency was about 80%. A series of random copolymers of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulphonate (AMPS) was synthesized by free‐radical copolymerization. The content of AMPS in the copolymers ranged from 1.1 to 9.6 mol %. The lower critical‐solution temperature (LCST) of copolymers in water increased strongly with an increasing content of AMPS. The influence of polymer concentration on the LCST of the copolymers was studied. For the copolymers with a higher AMPS content, the LCST decreased faster with an increasing concentration than for copolymers with a low content of AMPS. For a copolymer containing 1.1 mol % of AMPS the LCST dropped by about 3 °C when the concentration increased from 1 to 10 g/L, whereas for a copolymer containing 9.6 mol % of AMPS the LCST dropped by about 10 °C in the concentration range from 2 to 10 g/L. It was observed that the ionic strength of the aqueous polymer solution very strongly influences the LCST. This effect was most visible for the copolymer with the highest content of AMPS (9.6 mol %) for which an increase in the ionic strength from 0.2 to 2.0 resulted in a decrease in the LCST by about 27 °C (from 55 to 28 °C), whereas for the copolymer containing 1.1 mol % of AMPS the LCST decreased only by about 6 °C (from 37 to 31 °C) when the ionic strength increased from 0.005 to 0.3. The reactivity ratios for the AMPS and NIPAM monomer pairs were determined using different methods. The values of rAMPS and rNIPAM obtained were 11.0–11.6 and 2.1–2.4, respectively. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 2784–2792, 2001  相似文献

Terpolymers composed of Nn‐propylacrylamide (NPAAm), butyl methacrylate (BMA), and N,N‐diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) were prepared in an attempt to investigate the temperature‐induced phase transition and its mechanism. Poly(NPAAm) showed the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) around 24°C in water. With the incorporation of DEAEMA with NPAAm, the LCST change was characterized by an initial increase. However, the LCST was shifted to the lower temperature at the later stage. This might be explained in terms of hydrophilic/hydrophobic contribution of DEAEMA to the LCST. The swelling behavior of copolymer gel in the various solvents and spin‐lattice relaxation time (T1) study by NMR strongly suggested the hydrophilic/hydrophobic contribution of DEAEMA to the LCST depending on the local environment. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Stimuli‐responsive polypeptides are receiving much attention for drug delivery systems and tissue engineering scaffolds; however, it is challenging to construct multiple‐responsive polypeptides and one‐component polymeric hydrogels. Herein, a novel type of triple redox/temperature‐responsive diselenide‐containing poly(methoxydiethylene glycol‐l ‐glutamate) homopolypeptide was facilely synthesized by selenocystamine‐initiated ring‐opening polymerization in DMF at 30 °C, and their chemical structures and physical properties were fully characterized by means of 1H NMR, GPC, FT‐IR, WAXD, and CD. They self‐assembled into spherical micelles in aqueous solution, which possess a lower critical solution temperature, redox‐responsiveness inherited from diselenide bond, and the triple stimuli‐sensitive self‐assembly behaviors, as characterized by means of turbidity, DLS, TEM, and zeta potential measurements. The diselenide‐containing homopolypeptides formed supramolecular hydrogels at room temperature, exhibiting a thermal gel–sol transition. The rheological tests evidence that the mechanical modulus of the hydrogel is independent of angular frequency within 100 rad/s and at 25 °C, in which the storage modulus of G′ is order of magnitude greater than the loss modulus of G″, displaying a solid‐like elastic behavior. Moreover, the mechanical modulus of the hydrogel can be tuned by changing the chain length of the homopolypeptide, the 10‐mM 1,4‐dithiothreitol (DTT) reduction, and 1 mM H2O2 oxidation, respectively. Consequently, this work provides a simple strategy to fabricate triple‐stimuli responsive polypeptide micelles and one‐component hydrogels. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Self‐immolative polymers (SIPs) undergo depolymerization in response to the cleavage of stimuli‐responsive end‐caps from their termini. Some classes of SIPs, including polycarbamates, have depolymerization rates that depend on environmental factors such as solvent and pH. In previous work, hydrophobic SIPs have been incorporated into amphiphilic block copolymers and used to prepare nanoassemblies. However, stimuli‐responsive hydrophilic blocks have not previously been incorporated. In this work, we synthesized amphiphilic copolymers composed of a hydrophobic polycarbamate SIP block and a hydrophilic poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) block connected by a UV light‐responsive linker end‐cap. It was hypothesized that after assembly of the block copolymers into nanoparticles, chain collapse of the PDMAEMA above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) might change the environment of the SIP block, thereby altering its depolymerization rate. Self‐assembly of the block copolymers was performed, and the depolymerization of the resulting assemblies was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and NMR spectroscopy. At 20 °C, the system exhibited a selective response to the UV light. At 65 °C, above the LCST of PDMAEMA, the systems underwent more rapid depolymerization, suggesting that the increase in rate arising from the higher temperature dominated over environmental effects arising from chain collapse. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A naphthalene diimide (NDI) building block containing hydrazide (H1) and hydroxy (H2) groups self‐assembled into a reverse‐vesicular structure in methylcyclohexane by orthogonal H‐bonding and π‐stacking. At an elevated temperature (LCST=43 °C), destruction of the assembled structure owing to selective dissociation of H2–H2 H bonding led to macroscopic precipitation. Further heating resulted in homogeneous redispersion of the sample at 70 °C (UCST) and the formation of a reverse‐micellar structure. In the presence of a pyridine (H3)‐functionalized pyrene (PY) donor, a supramolecular dyad (NDI–PY) was formed by H2–H3 H‐bonding. Slow transformation into an alternate NDI–PY stack occurred by a folding process due to the charge‐transfer interaction between NDI and PY. The mixed NDI–PY assembly exhibited a morphology transition from a reverse micelle (with a NDI–PY mixed‐stack core) below the LCST to another reverse micelle (with a NDI core) above the UCST via a “denatured” intermediate.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on self‐interaction of human‐like collagen (HLC) were investigated by hydrophobic interaction chromatography, calorimetric measurement, and sodium dodecyl sulphate‐polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS‐PAGE) analysis. Results show that three types of interaction roles may exist between HLC molecules at 3–50°C, which were divided into three narrower temperature ranges. In temperature range from 3–22°C, hydrogen bonding plays a key role in the formation of a gelatinous aggregate. In the range of 22–38°C, hydrophobic bonds accompanied by hydrogen bonds are involved in the formation compact aggregates. When temperature is above 38°C the hydrophobic effect formed in the HLC monomer results in the loss of its ability to self‐interact.  相似文献

Composite particles comprising poly(2‐phenylethyl methacrylate) (PPhEMA) and imidazolium‐based poly(ionic liquid)s were prepared by suspension polymerization of 1‐vinyl‐3‐ethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide as an ionic liquid monomer with dissolved PPhEMA. Not only PPhEMA exhibits lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior in 1‐vinyl‐3‐ethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide but also the polymer blend in the bulk state exhibited LCST behavior. However, the composite polymer particles obtained after polymerization at 70°C maintained a homogeneous inner structure after heat treatment as the polymerization temperature was greater than the LCST in this system due to the formation of a cross‐linked structure during polymerization. When the composite particles were prepared by suspension polymerization at 30°C, their inner morphology changed from homogeneous to phase separated during the subsequent heat treatment. Moreover, the morphology transformation of the composite particles was dependent on the PPhEMA molecular weight. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The temperature‐induced conformational transition of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in neutral aqueous solution was studied using intrinsic fluorescence emission spectrum, reversed‐phase liquid chromatography and sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and the conformation transition thermodynamic parameters were determined in the temperature range 12–50 °C. The results showed that, in the temperature range 12–20 °C, BSA only existed in a single conformation state A, while in the temperature range 22–50 °C, it existed in two different conformation states: A and B. The percentage of conformation state A decreased while that of conformation state B increased with the increase in temperatures, and when temperature approached 50 °C conformation state B accounted for approximately 25% of all conformation states of BSA. In the conformational transition of BSA from conformation state A to conformation state B, the positive enthalpy change, entropy change and free energy changes demonstrated that the conformational transition was endothermic, nonspontaneous and mainly entropy‐driven. © 2013 The Authors. Novel thermo‐responsive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐block‐poly(l ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(N‐isopropylacylamide) (PNIPAAm‐b‐PLLA‐b‐PNIPAAm) triblock copolymers were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization of NIPAAm with Br‐PLLA‐Br macroinitiator, using a CuCl/tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl) amine (Me6TREN) complex as catalyst at 25 °C in a N,N‐dimethylformamide/water mixture. The molecular weight of the copolymers ranges from 18,000 to 38,000 g mol?1, and the dispersity from 1.10 to 1.28. Micelles are formed by self‐assembly of copolymers in aqueous medium at room temperature, as evidenced by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The critical micelle concentration determined by fluorescence spectroscopy ranges from 0.0077 to 0.016 mg mL?1. 1H NMR analysis in selective solvents confirmed the core‐shell structure of micelles. The copolymers exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between 32.1 and 32.8 °C. The micelles are spherical in shape with a mean diameter between 31.4 and 83.3 nm, as determined by TEM and DLS. When the temperature is raised above the LCST, micelle size increases at high copolymer concentrations due to aggregation. In contrast, at low copolymer concentrations, decrease of micelle size is observed due to collapse of PNIPAAm chains. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Thermosensitive diethylene glycol‐derived poly(L ‐glutamate) homopolypeptides (i.e., poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu) with different molecular weights (MW) (Mn,GPC = 5380–32520) were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of EG2‐L ‐glutamate N‐carboxyanhydride (EG2‐Glu‐NCA) in N,N‐dimethylformamide solution at 50 °C. Their molecular structure, conformation transition, liquid crystal (LC) phase behavior, lower critical solution temperature (LCST) transition, and morphology evolution were thoroughly characterized by means of FTIR, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide angle X‐ray diffraction, polarized optical microscope, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering. In solid state, the homopolypeptide poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu presented a conformation transition from α‐helix to β‐sheet with increasing their MW at room temperature, while it mainly assumed an α‐helix of 80–86% in aqueous solution. Poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu showed a thermotropic LC phase with a transition temperature of about 100 °C in solid state, while it gave a reversible LCST transition of 34–36 °C in aqueous solution. The amphiphilic homopolypeptide poly‐L ‐EG2‐Glu self‐assembled into nanostructures in aqueous solution, and their critical aggregation concentrations decreased with increasing MW. Interestingly, their morphology changed from spherical micelles to worm‐like micelles, then to fiber micelles with increasing MW. This work provides a simple method for the generation of different nanostructures from a thermosensitive biodegradable homopolypeptide. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel water‐soluble triply‐responsive homopolymers of N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) containing an azobenzene moiety as the terminal group were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The ATRP process of DMAEMA was initiated by an azobenzene derivative substituted with a 2‐bromoisobutyryl group (Azo‐Br) in the presence of CuCl/Me6TREN in 1,4‐dioxane as a catalyst system. The molecular weights and their polydispersities of the resulting homopolymers (Azo‐PDMAEMA) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The homopolymers are soluble in aqueous solution and exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) that alternated reversibly in response to Ph and photoisomerization of the terminal azobenzene moiety. It was found that the LCST increased as pH decreased in the range of testing. Under UV light irradiation, the trans‐to‐cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety resulted in a higher LCST, whereas it recovered under visible light irradiation. This kind of polymers should be particularly interesting for a variety of potential applications in some promising areas, such as drug controlled‐releasing carriers and intelligent materials because of the multistimuli responsive property. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel multifunctional hydrogels that combined the merits of both thermoresponsive and biodegradable polymeric materials were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The hydrogels were copolymeric networks composed of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAM) as a thermoresponsive component, poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) as a hydrolytically degradable and hydrophobic component, and dextran as an enzymatically degradable and hydrophilic component. The chemical structures of the hydrogels were characterized by an attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) technique. The hydrogels were thermoresponsive, showing a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at approximately 32 °C, and their swelling properties strongly depended on temperature changes, the balance of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic components, and the degradation of the PLLA component. The degradation of the hydrogels caused by hydrolytic cleavage of ester bonds in the PLLA component was faster at 25 °C below the LCST than at 37 °C above the LCST, determined by the ATR–FTIR technique. Due to their multifunctional properties, the designed hydrogels show great potential for biomedical applications, including drug delivery and tissue engineering. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate‐ran‐9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole) (poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK)) random copolymers, with VBK molar feed compositions fVBK,0 = 0.02–0.09, were synthesized using 10 mol % [tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino] nitroxide (SG1) relative to 2‐([tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino]oxy)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (BlocBuilder) at 80 °C and 90 °C. Controlled polymerizations were observed, even with fVBK,0 = 0.02, as reflected by a linear increase in number average molecular weight (Mn) versus conversion X ≤ 0.6 with final copolymers characterized by relatively narrow, monomodal molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.5). Poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK) copolymers were deemed sufficiently pseudo‐“living” to reinitiate a second batch of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), with very few apparent dead chains, as indicated by the monomodal shift in the gel permeation chromatography chromatograms. Poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK) random copolymers exhibited tuneable lower critical solution temperature (LCST), in aqueous solution, by modifying copolymer composition, solution pH and by the addition of the water‐soluble poly(DMAA) segment. 1H NMR analysis determined that, in water, the VBK units of the poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK) random copolymer were segregated to the interior of the copolymer aggregate regardless of solution temperature and that poly(DMAEMA‐ran‐VBK)‐b‐poly(DMAA) block copolymers formed micelles above the LCST. In addition, the final random copolymer and block copolymer exhibited temperature dependent fluorescence due to the VBK units. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A temperature‐directed micellar morphological transformation was developed using CABC multi‐block copolymers with a hydrophobic block A, a hydrophilic block B, and a thermally responsive block C with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The micellar structure was switched from a star (below LCST) to a flower (above LCST). The transition temperature was tunable in a wide range (11–90 °C) by varying the C monomer composition. The large difference in the loading capacity between the star and flower enabled efficient encapsulation and controlled release of external molecules. Unlike conventional systems, the present star‐to‐flower transformation keeps micellar structures and hence does not liberate polymers but only external molecules selectively. Another application is a hidden functional segment. A functional segment is hidden (shielded) below the LCST and exposed to interact with external molecules or surfaces above the LCST.  相似文献

A novel multiresponsive poly(ether tert‐amine) (PEA) was synthesized by nucleophilic addition/ring‐opening reaction of commercial poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(propylene oxide) (PPO), and di‐epoxy and di‐amine monomer. The process of synthesis was very simple and green in ethanol as reactive media. These PEAs exhibit sharp response to temperature, pH, and ionic strength, with adjustable and sharp phase transitions in the range of 27–100 °C. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PEA's aqueous solution presents a linear relationship to the PEO content (y = 35.7 + x), indicating well‐tunable LCST. The concentration of PEA has no obvious effect on LCST. Therefore, PEA will be potential in applications of drug delivery, separation, and biotechnology. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymers that can respond reversibly by changing their physical or chemical properties are recognized as stimuli‐responsive polymers. The renowned temperature‐sensitive polymer is poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (p(NIPAM)), and here, homopolymeric supermacroporous p(NIPAM)) cryogel was synthesized via cryopolymerization technique at cryogenic condition (below melting point of solvent, −18°C). Then, the prepared p(NIPAM) cryogel was characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared radiation spectrometer, and thermogravimetric analyzer. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) value of the prepared p(NIPAM) cryogel was determined from % swelling equilibrium swellings at various temperatures, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50°C, respectively. Furthermore, the pore volume and porosity of p(NIPAM) cryogels were compared below and above the LCST values. Finally, the separation capability of p(NIPAM) cryogels for some molecules such as tannic acid, gallic acid, nicotine (N), and caffeine (C) was investigated at the below and above the LCST values.  相似文献

In this research, thermo‐ and pH‐responsive chitosan‐based porous nanoparticles were prepared by the temperature‐dependent self assembly method. The chitosan‐graft‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (CS‐g‐PNIPAAm) copolymer solution was prepared through polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer in the presence of chitosan (CS) solution using cerium ammounium nitrate as the initiator. Then, CS‐g‐PNIPAAm solution was diluted by deionized water and heated to 40 °C for CS‐g‐PNIPAAm self‐assembly. After that, CS‐g‐PNIPAAm assembled to form micelles in which shell layer was CS. Crosslinking agent was used to reinforce the micelle structure to form nanoparticle. The molar ratio of CS/NIPAAm in the feed mixture was changed to investigate its effect on structure, morphology, thermal‐ and pH‐responsive properties of the nanoparticles. TEM images showed that a porous structure of nanoparticles was developed. The synthesized nanoparticles carried positive charges on the surface and exhibited stimuli‐responsive properties, and their mean diameter thus could be manipulated by changing pH value and temperature of the environment. The nanoparticles showed a continuous release of the encapsulated doxycycline hyclate up to 10 days during an in‐vitro release experiment. These porous particles with environmentally sensitive properties are expected to be utilized in hydrophilic drug delivery system. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A nondestructive method was developed for grafting and retrieving polymer brushes from single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT)s based on mussel‐inspired chemistry. Thermo‐responsive polymer brushes were grafted on SWCNTs by coating the tubes with polydopamine as a reactive underlayer and sequential surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (OEGMA, Mn = 475) and 2‐(2'‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate (MEO2MA). Copolymer brushes were retrieved from the SWCNTs using 1 M NaOH to destroy the crosslinked polydopamine coating, and after that, the pristine properties of the SWCNTs were preserved. The low critical solution temperature (LCST) and molecular weight of the copolymer were measured using a nephelometer and gel permeation chromatograph, respectively. The loading and release behavior of Rhodamine 6G on responsive polymer‐grafted SWCNTs demonstrates that the copolymer brushes confer the SWCNTs an LCST dependence. This method can accurately confirm the molecular weights and polydispersity of stimuli‐responsive polymers grafted on any other nanoparticles and predict their controlled release behavior. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
