Ionic liquid promoted synthesis of bis(indolyl) methanes

1-benzyl-3-methyl imidazolium hydrogen sulphate [bnmim][HSO₄] was found to be an effective catalyst for the condensation reaction of indoles and derivatives with benzaldehydes in microwave irradiation with lower reaction time and higher yields to give bis(indolyl) methanes.      

Comparison of structure,log<Emphasis Type="Italic">P</Emphasis> and P388 cytotoxicity of some phenyl and ferrocenyl cyclic chalcone analogues. Application of RP-TLC for log<Emphasis Type="Italic">P</Emphasis> determination of the ferrocenyl analogues

Cyclic chalcone analogues (2–5) and their ferrocenyl counterparts (6–10) were synthesized and their logP and P388 cyctotoxity were investigated. The structures of the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR ¹H and ¹³NMR spectroscopy. Comparison of conjugation and stereochemistry of the respective derivatives showed similar characteristics compared to ones with some higher degree of conjugation in the ferrocenyl series. Comparison of logP of the ferrocenyl derivatives determined by a validated RP-TLC method showed the ferrocenyl derivatives to have higher logP _TLC. The results demonstrate that the differences in three dimensional shape, conjugation and lipophilicity do not have strong influence on the P388 cytotoxicity of the investigated phenyl (1−5) and ferrocenyl (6−10) enones.      

Synthesis,characterization, catalytic and antimicrobial studies of ruthenium(III) complexes

Ru(III) complexes of the type [RuXB(L)2] have been prepared by the reaction of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones/thiones (HL¹–HL⁴) with the precursors of the type [RuX₃B₃] where X=Cl or Br; B=PPh₃ or AsPh₃ and L is the deprotonated ligand. The synthesized complexes were characterized by physico-chemical methods, electrochemical and magnetic moment data. The catalytic efficiency of the complexes were examined in the oxidation of alcohols and antimicrobial studies were also carried out.      

Synthesis of Xenbucin using Suzuki reaction catalyzed by Pd/C in water

Xenbucin 1, an analgesic drug, was synthesized in 4 steps using two different routes. The biaryl fragment could successfully be produced via a Pd/C catalysed Suzuki coupling in water using sodium tetraphenylborate as a phenylation reagent. Overall yields of the routes were 36% and 59%, respectively.      

Synthesis and pharmacological properties of 3-(2-methyl-furan-3-yl)-4-substituted-Δ<Superscript>2</Superscript>-1,2,4-triazoline-5-thiones

By the reaction of 2-methyl-furan-3-carboxylic acid hydrazide with isothiocyanates, 1-[(2-methyl-furan-3-yl)carbonyl]-4-substituted thiosemicarbazides 1 were obtained. Further cyclization with 2% NaOH led to the formation of 3-(2-methyl-furan-3-yl)-4-substituted-Δ²-1,2,4-triazoline-5-thiones 2. The pharmacological effects of 2 on the central nervous system in mice were investigated. Strong antinociceptive properties of the investigated derivatives were observed in a wide range of doses.      

Metathesis transformations of unsaturated derivatives of β-diketones

Selected β-diketones bearing unsaturated derivatives have been demonstrated to undergo homo-metathesis and cross-metathesis with selected olefins in the presence of Grubbs catalysts. The reactions led to respective homo- and cross-metathesis products mainly with good yields and selectivities.      

α-Amino acid-derived 2-phenylimidazoles with potential antimycobacterial activity

α-Amino acid-derived 2-phenylimidazole derivatives were designed, synthesized, and further investigated as potential antimycobacterial agents. The synthesis of target imidazole derivatives involved the transformation of Cbz-protected α-amino acids (Ala, Val, Phe, Leu, iLe, and Pro) into α-diazoketones and α-bromoketones, respectively. Subsequent treatment of α-bromoketones with (4-nitro)benzamidine afforded imidazole derivatives bearing α-amino acid residue appended to the imidazole C4 and (4-nitro)phenyl ring in the position C2. Antimycobacterial activities of both series of compounds against M. tuberculosis, M. avium, and M. kansasii were screened and basic structure-activity relationships were further evaluated.      

Partition coefficients of ketones,phenols, aliphatic and aromatic acids,and esters in <Emphasis Type="Italic">n</Emphasis>-hexane/nitromethane

Liquid-liquid partition is used in sample preparation and in countercurrent and liquid-liquid chromatographic separations. Partition coefficients are widely used in toxicology, environmental, and analytical chemistry. The K _hn determination procedure for the n-hexane/nitromethane system was optimized and partition coefficients for 99 ketones, esters and trimethylsilyl derivatives of phenols, aliphatic and aromatic acids were determined. For 130 compounds, K _hn values were predicted using mathematical relationships between K _hn and other physicochemical and structural parameters.      

Activity and stereoselectivity of Ru-based catalyst bearing a fluorinated imidazolinium ligand

Grubbs II generation catalyst (3), bearing a fluorinated imidazolinium ligand, was investigated in cross metathesis (CM), ring closing metathesis (RCM) and ring opening polymerization metathesis (ROMP) for a variety of substrates. Kinetic studies showed reduced stability of the catalyst in methylene chloride following the first 15 minutes of reaction preventing a higher efficiency despite the very high activity. Beneficial solvent effects on the catalyst stability were observed by performing RCM in C₆F₆.      

The binary system PbO - BiVO4

Phase equilibria established in the PbO - BiVO₄ system over the whole component concentration range up to 1000°C have been investigated. A phase diagram has been constructed using DTA and XRD.      

Synthesis and structure of new 3,7,10-substituted-phenothiazine derivatives

The synthesis of new 3,7-dibromophenothiazine derivatives bearing bromoalkyl, mercaptoalkyl and alkylthioacetate groups on the N atom at position 10 is reported. The Suzuki coupling reaction of one of these derivatives via the bromine atoms at positions 3 and 7 with bromothiophene derivatives is also discussed.      

One-pot, three-component condensation of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde derivatives, primary amines with alkyl isocyanides to N-alkyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-imino-acetamides

One-pot, three-component condensation of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde derivatives, primary amines with alkyl isocyanides is reported. N-alkyl-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-iminoacetamide derivatives are generated presumably via the preliminary formation of N, N′-disubstituted benzo[b]furan-2,3-diamines and subsequent oxidation with molecular oxygen.      

Ionic liquid promoted Diels-Alder Reaction between anthrone and maleimides

Ionic liquids (IL) are gaining importance as green solvents. Imidazolium ionic liquid [bmim]⁺[Cl]⁻, an environmentally benign solvent, was found to promote the Diels-Alder reaction between anthrone and maleimides at room temperature with excellent yields. The ionic liquid played a dual role as solvent and catalyst.      

Sequential extraction and thermal desorption of mercury from contaminated soil and tailings from Mongolia

Mercury forms in contaminated environmental samples were studied by means of sequential extraction and thermal desorption from the solid phase. The sequential extraction procedure involved the following fractions: water soluble mercury, mercury extracted in acidic conditions, mercury bound to humic substances, elemental Hg and mercury bound to complexes, HgS, and residual mercury. In addition to sequential extraction, the distribution of mercury species as a function of soil particles size was studied. The thermal desorption method is based on the thermal decomposition or desorption of Hg compounds at different temperatures. The following four species were observed: Hg⁰, HgCl₂, HgS and Hg^(II) bound to humic acids. The Hg release curves from artificial soils and real samples were obtained and their applicability to the speciation analysis was considered.      

Ugi products containing boronate esters

The Ugi reaction with formylphenylboronic acid derivatives as the carbonyl component proceeds to give the corresponding boron-containing dipeptide derivatives (Ugi products) in good yields.      

Synthesis of fluorescent carboxylic acid ligands for construction of monolayers on nanostructures

Two new long-chain carboxylic acids (1, 2) bearing strong fluorescent group pyrene as ligands for Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) have been synthesized. The multistep targeted synthesis is accomplished by use of Pyren-1-yl methylamine hydrochloride and employing simplified synthetic protocols. Compound 2 contains a chiral center purposely introduced along the atom chain in order to make it suitable for chiro-optical studies of the resulting SAMs.      

Esterification of palmitic acid with epichlorohydrin on anion exchange resin catalyst

The esterification reaction of palmitic acid with epichlorohydrin catalyzed by an anionic macroporous resin was studied. Purolite A-500 resin proved to be a very effective catalyst in the synthesis of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl palmitate. The effects of certain parameters such as speed of agitation, catalyst particle size, catalyst loading, temperature, initial molar ratio between reactants on the rate of reaction were studied. It was found that the overall rate is intrinsically kinetically controlled. The structure of synthesized ester was confirmed by FTIR and ¹H NMR analyses.      

<Emphasis Type="Italic">N</Emphasis>-Alkylation of benzimidazoles with ketonic Mannich bases and the reduction of the resulting 1-(3-oxopropyl)benzimidazoles

Benzimidazole, benzimidazoles diversely substituted at position 2, and 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole have been alkylated at N ¹ with ketonic Mannich bases derived from acetophenones, acetylnaphthalenes, 2-acetylthiophene and 1-tetralone to afford a series of novel 1-(3-oxopropyl)benzimidazoles. The reduction of these transamination products with NaBH₄ in methanol produced the corresponding 1-(3-hydroxypropyl)benzimidazoles in excellent yields.      

A theoretical study of the neutral and the double-charged cation of cyclo[8]pyrrole and its interaction with inorganic anions

A theoretical study of the complexation of cyclo[8]pyrrole dication, 2, and the corresponding system in neutral form, 3, with six anionic molecules has been carried out up to the B3LYP/6–311++G(2d,2p) computational level. The effect of the water solvation has been taken into account by means of the PCM method. The gas phase results correspond to the very large interaction energies expected for the interaction of molecules of opposite charge. In all the complexes, the analysis of the electron density by means of the Atoms In Molecules (AIM) methodology shows the presence of eight intermolecular interactions between the individual molecules. The results, using the water solvent model, indicate that the 2:SO₄ ²⁻ complex is more stable than the 2:NO₃ ⁻, in agreement with experimental results.
