A series of experimental results on the in-plane fracture of a fiber reinforced laminated composite panel is analyzed using the variational multiscale cohesive method (VMCM). The VMCM results demonstrate the influence of specimen geometry and load distribution on the propagation of large scale bridging cracks in the fiber reinforced panel. Experimentally observed variation in fracture resistance is substantiated numerically by comparing the experimental and VMCM load–displacement responses of geometrically scaled single edge-notch three point bend (SETB) specimens. The results elucidate the size dependence of the traction-separation relationship for this class of materials even in moderately large specimens, contrary to the conventional understanding of it being a material property. The existence of a “free bridging zone” (different from the conventional “full bridging zone”) is recognized, and its influence on the evolving fracture resistance is discussed. The numerical simulations and ensuing bridging zone evolution analysis demonstrates the versatility of VMCM in objectively simulating progressive crack propagation, compared against conventional numerical schemes like traditional cohesive zone modeling, which require a priori knowledge of the crack path.  相似文献

A micromechanical model for cohesive materials is derived by considering their underlying microstructure conceptualized as a collection of grains interacting through pseudo-bonds. The pseudo-bond or the inter-granular force–displacement relations are formulated taking inspiration from the atomistic-level particle interactions. These force–displacement relationships are then used to derive the incremental stiffnesses at the grain-scale, and consequently, obtain the sample-scale stress–strain relationship of a representative volume of the material. The derived relationship is utilized to study the stress–strain and failure behavior including the volume change and “brittle” to “ductile” transition behavior of cohesive materials under multi-axial loading condition. The model calculations are compared with available measured data for model validation. Model predictions exhibit both quantitative and qualitative consistency with the observed behavior of cohesive material.  相似文献

A linear elastic body in plane strain which contains a stationary crack and which is initially at rest and stress free is considered. It is shown that if the elastodynamic displacement field and stress intensity factor are known, as functions of crack length, for any symmetrical distribution of time-varying forces which acts on the body, subsequent to t=0, then the stress intensity factor due to any other symmetrical load system whatsoever which acts on the same body may be directly determined. The other load system may be of arbitrary spatial distribution and time variation. Further, that part of the elastodynamic displacement field due to the other load system, which arises from the presence of the crack, may also be directly determined. The results are obtained by extension of Rice's mode of derivation of the corresponding Bueckner-Rice elastostatic results to Laplace-transformed elastodynamic variables. Likewise, the existence of a universal elastodynamic “weight function” for any given cracked body is demonstrated. As an application, Freund's recent result for the stress intensity factor due to suddenly applied concentrated forces on the crack surfaces is derived directly by our method, from de Hoop's earlier solution for suddenly applied uniform pressures.  相似文献

After briefly describing an experimental modelling method consisting of a marriage of frozen stress photoelasticity with the Griffith–Irwin equations of fracture mechanics, the method is applied to a generic motor grain model containing part through cracks emanating from the corner of a fin tip under internal pressure to determine approximate crack shapes and stress intensity factor values at maximum crack depth for various penetration depths. The role of shear modes during crack turning is described.  相似文献

In structural analysis of large masonry structures, nondemanding computation effort, numerical stability and simplified model assembly and meshing often have a higher priority over precise details of local stress or strain responses. This paper presents the development of a Fourier-based incremental homogenisation technique, where the macro–micro transformations of mechanical variables are derived by incremental variational problems to minimise the potential energy in representative volume elements (RVEs) with respect to local fluctuating displacement fields expanded in Fourier series. In addition to the proposed homogenisation technique, a unilateral damage–plasticity constitutive model for mortar joints in the RVE is developed within the framework of thermomechanics, which accounts for the stiffness and strength degradation (or recovery) due to the transverse crack opening/closing in the mortar joints. The numerical solution for the homogenisation problem and the performances of the proposed coupled-damage plastic mode and Fourier-based homogenisation scheme verified by detailed case studies are presented. It has been shown that the computational effort of the analysis with the proposed modelling technique can be considerably reduced by more than 20% as compared with that of the discrete modelling technique.  相似文献

An interface crack with a frictionless contact zone at the right crack-tip between two dissimilar magnetoelectroelastic materials under the action of a thermal flux and remote magnetoelectromechanical loads is considered. The open part of the crack is assumed to be electrically impermeable and magnetically permeable, and the crack faces are assumed to be heat insulted. The inhomogeneous combined Dirichlet–Riemann and Hilbert boundary value problems are, respectively, formulated and solved analytically. Stress, electrical displacement intensity factors as well as energy release rate are found in analytical forms, and analytical expressions for the contact zone length have been obtained for both the general case and the case of small contact zone length. Some numerical results are presented, which show clearly the effects of thermal and magnetoelectromechanical loads on the contact zone length, stress intensity factor and energy release rate. Results presented in this paper should have potential applications to the design of multilayered magnetoelectroelastic structures and devices.  相似文献

The paper deals with joint element model used in crashworthiness simulations. The first part of the paper is dedicated to the formulation of a new “global” finite element for spotweld modelling. The mechanical behaviour of the joint is elastic–plastic type and damage is taken into account to model the failure of the welded area. The second part of the paper concerns a new experimental procedure for joint strength analysis in pure and mixed modes I/II and for joint model characterisation. Experiment is based on Arcan principle and results are compared to open literature. In the last part of the paper, the parameters of the new joint model are identified using experiments and used for several shapes of spot-welded specimens. The model predicts reasonably the elastic–plastic part of the response but is unable to predict the post-peak response observed especially in the case of pure shear.  相似文献

The paper deals with experimental studies of inhomogeneous strain fields in the “neck” region in extension of plane and cylindrical specimens at the postcritical stage, which directly precedes the fracture, by using a video system and a digital image correlation method. We consider the problems of interpretation of extension diagrams obtained for specimens of various length with strain inhomogeneity in the working section of the specimen with a “neck.”We obtain experimental data about the distribution of longitudinal, transverse, and shear strain fields and the displacement fields in the region of the plane specimen localization by using the digital image correlation method.  相似文献

The dynamic behavior ofa Griffith permeable crack under harmonic anti-plane shearwaves in the piezoelectric materials is investigated by use of the non-local theory. To overcome themathematical difficulties,a one-dimensional non-local kernel is used instead of a two-dimensionalone for the anti-plane dynamic problem to obtain the stress and the electric displacement near thecrack tips.By means of Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with a pair of dual integralequations that the unknown variable is the jump of the displacement across the crack surfaces. These equations are solved with the Schmidt method and numerical examples are provided.Con-trary to the previous results,it is found that no stress and electric displacement singularities arepresent at the crack tip.The finite hoop stress and the electric displacement depend on the cracklength, the lattice parameter of the materials and the circle frequency of the incident waves.Thisenables us to employ the maximum stress hypothesis to deal with fracture problems in a naturalway.  相似文献

For a crack in a magnetoelectroelastic plane under the electrically and magnetically semi-permeable boundary condition, we derive the non-linear analytical solution of the strip electric–magnetic polarization saturation (EMPS) model. Using the extended dislocation theory and integral equation method, we obtain the electric and magnetic yielding zones, as well as the field intensity factor and local J-integral. Adapting an iterative method, numerical examples were performed to analyze the effect of different boundary conditions and the electric–magnetic saturated properties on the electric displacement and magnetic induction in the crack cavity, electric and magnetic yielding zones, stress intensity factor and local J-integral.  相似文献

The broad topic of the present work is Statics and Kinematics of masonry structures, made of monolithic blocks, modelled a la Heyman, that is rigid bodies loaded by external forces, submitted to unilateral constraints, and undergoing small displacements, under the simplifying assumption that sliding on rough interfaces is prevented. Specifically, in this work, we study the effect, in terms of internal forces, of specified loads, by using given settlements/eigenstrains to trigger special regimes of the internal forces. Although our scope here is the analysis of masonry structures composed by monolithic pieces, and whose blocks are not likely to break at their inside, the method we propose can also be applied to generic masonry structures, such as those made of bricks or small stones. Heyman’s assumptions translate, for unilateral continua, into a normality assumption which allows to employ the two theorems of Limit Analysis. These continuous structures may actually fracture everywhere at their inside, forming rigid blocks in relative displacement among each other. Such piecewise rigid-body displacements in masonry are physiological, and rather than the result of over-loading, are most likely the direct product of small changes of the displacement type boundary conditions. However, when in a part of the structure a specific piecewise rigid-body displacement nucleates, that part of the structure exhibits a one degree of freedom mechanism, and becomes statically determined. Therefore, the internal forces can be computed, despite the original uncracked structure being abundantly overdetermined, and then admitting infinite many statically admissible stress regimes. With these assumptions, in the present paper we study the equilibrium and the effect of settlements in a masonry structure made of monolithic blocks. In particular, the triple helical stair of the convent of San Domingos de Bonaval, located in the Bonaval district of Santiago de Compostela, is considered as case study.  相似文献

The Schmidt method is adopted to investigate the fracture problem of multiple parallel symmetric and permeable finite length mode-III cracks in a functionally graded piezoelectric/piezomagnetic material plane. This problem is formulated into dual integral equations, in which the unknown variables are the displacement jumps across the crack surfaces. In order to obtain the dual integral equations, the displacement jumps across the crack surfaces are directly expanded as a series of Jacobi polynomials. The results show that the stress, the electric displacement, and the magnetic flux intensity factors of cracks depend on the crack length, the functionally graded parameter, and the distance among the multiple parallel cracks. The crack shielding effect is also obviously presented in a functionally graded piezoelectric/piezomagnetic material plane with mul- tiple parallel symmetric mode-III cracks.  相似文献

In this paper, the interaction of two collinear cracks in functionally graded materials subjected to a uniform anti-plane shear loading is investigated by means of nonlocal theory. The traditional concepts of the nonlocal theory are extended to solve the fracture problem of functionally graded materials. To make the analysis tractable, it is assumed that the shear modulus varies exponentially with the coordinate vertical to the crack. By use of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of a pair of triple integral equations, in which the unknown variable is the displacement on the crack surfaces. To solve the triple integral equations, the displacement on the crack surfaces is expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials. Unlike the classical elasticity solutions, it is found that no stress singularity is present near the crack tips. The nonlocal elastic solutions yield a finite hoop stress at the crack tip, thus allowing us to use the maximum stress as a fracture criterion in functionally graded materials. The magnitude of the finite stress field depends on the crack length, the distance between two cracks, the parameter describing the functionally graded materials and the lattice parameter of the materials.  相似文献

In this work the photodegradation of a polyethylene co-polymer, ECO, is exploited to generate inhomogeneous arrangements of model “granular” media that aids in the experimental study of crack path selection problems. The advantage of our approach is that the well-known sensitivity of ECO’s properties to ultraviolet (UV) light allows knowledge of both grain and grain boundary response a priori to performing the experiments. A model granular arrangement with identical grain structure and of three different levels of grain boundary strength was constructed. Each microstructure was loaded in uniaxial tension, and the resulting strain fields were recorded using digital image correlation (DIC). Depending on the applied load and the local microstructure, crack initiation and growth occurred differently: either one main crack developed and became responsible for failure, or an initial crack formed but arrested, and a host of secondary cracks appeared at different critical locations, including grain boundaries and grain interiors. Thus, the experimental configuration can be used to produce controllable amounts of intergranular vs. transgranular failure. The DIC results were correlated with global load–displacement measurements and were compared to finite element models using ABAQUS that simulated the configurations tested in each case. A von Mises and Tresca yield criterion was used to illustrate areas where failure was possible, and the results were favorably compared with the experimental failure initiation sites in each case.  相似文献

The boundary element method combined with subtration of Bueckner singular fields are used to obtain weight functions for an internal edge crack in a rotating annular disk. A previously developed, general representation of the weight function is used which leads to integrals that can be evaluated analytically to obtain the stress intensity factor and surface displacements of the crack. The determination of crack tip opening displacements for the strip yield crack is reduced to a non-singular integral which can be evaluated in closed form. The strip yield zone length and crack tip opening displacement are determined for an internal radial crack in a rotating annular disk for a range of crack lengths and rotational speeds.  相似文献

In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a Griffith crack in a piezoelectric material strip subjected to the harmonic anti-plane shear waves is investigated by use of the non-local theory for impermeable crack surface conditions. To overcome the mathematical difficulties, a one-dimensional non-local kernel is used instead of a two-dimensional one for the anti-plane dynamic problem to obtain the stress and the electric displacement near at the crack tip. By means of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of two pairs of dual integral equations. These equations are solved using the Schmidt method. Contrary to the classical solution, it is found that no stress and electric displacement singularity is present near the crack tip. The non-local dynamic elastic solutions yield a finite hoop stress near the crack tip, thus allowing for a fracture criterion based on the maximum dynamic stress hypothesis. The finite hoop stress at the crack tip depends on the crack length, the thickness of the strip, the circular frequency of incident wave and the lattice parameter.  相似文献
