This paper deals with some theoretical and experimental aspects of the behavior of periodic hyperelastic composites. We focus here on composites consisting of an elastomeric matrix periodically reinforced by long fibers. The paper is composed of three parts. The first part deals with the theoretical aspects of compressible behavior. The second-order theory of Ponte Castañeda (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 44 (1996) 827) is considered and extended to periodic microstructures. Comparisons with results obtained by the finite element method show that the composite behavior predicted by the present model is much more accurate for compressible than for incompressible materials. The second part deals with the extension of the method to incompressible behavior. A mixed formulation (displacement-pressure) is used which improves the accuracy of the estimate given by the model. The third part presents experimental results. The composite tested is made of a rubber matrix reinforced by steel wires. Firstly, the matrix behavior is identified with a tensile test and a shear test carried out on homogeneous samples. Secondly, the composite is tested under shearing. The experimentally measured homogenized stress is then compared with the predictions of the model.  相似文献

A micro-mechanical damage model is proposed to predict the overall viscoplastic behavior and damage evolution in a particle filled polymer matrix composite. Particulate composite consists of polymer matrix, particle fillers, and an interfacial transition interphase around the filler particles. Yet the composite is treated as a two distinct phase material, namely the matrix and the equivalent particle-interface assembly. The CTE mismatch between the matrix and the filler particles is introduced into the model. A damage evolution function based on irreversible thermodynamics is also introduced into the constitutive model to describe the degradation of the composite. The efficient general return-mapping algorithm is exploited to implement the proposed unified damage coupled viscoplastic model into finite element formulation. Furthermore, the model predictions for uniaxial loading conditions are compared with the experimental data.  相似文献

The predictive capacity of ductile fracture models when applied to composite and multiphase materials is related to the accuracy of the estimated stress/strain level in the second phases or reinforcements, which defines the condition for damage nucleation. Second phase particles contribute to the overall hardening of the composite before void nucleation, as well as to its softening after their fracture or decohesion. If the volume fraction of reinforcement is larger than a couple of percents, this softening can significantly affect the resistance to plastic localization and cannot be neglected. In order to explicitly account for the effect of second phase particles on the ductile fracture process, this study integrates a damage model based on the Gologanu–Leblond–Devaux constitutive behavior with a mean-field homogenization scheme. Even though the model is more general, the present study focuses on elastic particles dispersed in an elasto-plastic matrix. After assessing the mean-field homogenization scheme through comparison with two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element calculations, an extensive parametric study is performed using the integrated homogenization-damage model. The predictions of the integrated homogenization-damage model are also compared with experimental results on cast aluminum alloys, in terms of both the fracture strain and overall stress–strain curves. The study demonstrates the complex couplings among the load transfer to second phase particles, their resistance to fracture, the void nucleation mode, and the overall ductility.  相似文献

In order to effectively describe the progressively intralaminar and interlam- inar damage for composite laminates, a three dimensional progressive damage model for composite laminates to be used for low-velocity impact is presented. Being applied to three-dimensional (3D) solid elements and cohesive elements, the nonlinear damage model can be used to analyze the dynamic performance of composite structure and its failure be- havior. For the intralaminar damage, as a function of the energy release rate, the damage model in an exponential function can describe progressive development of the damage. For the interlaminar damage, the damage evolution is described by the framework of the continuum mechanics through cohesive elements. Coding the user subroutine VUMAT of the finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit, the model is applied to an example, i.e., carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite laminates under low-velocity impact. It is shown that the prediction of damage and deformation agrees well with the experimental results.  相似文献

Both numerical and experimental researches are carried out to study the strength of the composite double-bolted joints and the bearing damage propagation. A mesoscale level progressive damage model along with analytical formulation is used to predict the bearing failure of carbon–epoxy composite plates. This damage model is introduced as a user material subroutine in the commercial software ABAQUS, and the maximum failure load is calculated. In order to validate the numerical results, experimental tests are also conducted in which comparison between the results shows an excellent agreement. Furthermore, the effects of the bolt distances on the maximum failure load are studied. The results reveal that there is an optimum bolt distance that outcomes maximum failure loads.  相似文献

Nonlinear dynamic aeroelasticity of composite wings in compressible flows is investigated. To provide a reasonable model for the problem, the composite wing is modeled as a thin walled beam (TWB) with circumferentially asymmetric stiffness layup configuration. The structural model considers nonlinear strain displacement relations and a number of non-classical effects, such as transverse shear and warping inhibition. Geometrically nonlinear terms of up to third order are retained in the formulation. Unsteady aerodynamic loads are calculated according to a compressible model, described by indicial function approximations in the time domain. The aeroelastic system of equations is augmented by the differential equations governing the aerodynamics lag states to derive the final explicit form of the coupled fluid-structure equations of motion. The final nonlinear governing aeroelastic system of equations is solved using the eigenvectors of the linear structural equations of motion to approximate the spatial variation of the corresponding degrees of freedom in the Ritz solution method. Direct time integrations of the nonlinear equations of motion representing the full aeroelastic system are conducted using the well-known Runge–Kutta method. A comprehensive insight is provided over the effect of parameters such as the lamination fiber angle and the sweep angle on the stability margins and the limit cycle oscillation behavior of the system. Integration of the interpolation method employed for the evaluation of compressible indicial functions at any Mach number in the subsonic compressible range to the derivation process of the third order nonlinear aeroelastic system of equations based on TWB theory is done for the first time. Results show that flutter speeds obtained by the incompressible unsteady aerodynamics are not conservative and as the backward sweep angle of the wing is increased, post-flutter aeroelastic response of the wing becomes more well-behaved.  相似文献

By taking the frozen soil as a particle-reinforced composite material which consists of clay soil(i.e., the matrix) and ice particles, a micromechanical constitutive model is established to describe the dynamic compressive deformation of frozen soil. The proposed model is constructed by referring to the debonding damage theory of composite materials, and addresses the effects of strain rate and temperature on the dynamic compressive deformation of frozen soil. The proposed model is verified through comparison of the predictions with the corresponding dynamic experimental data of frozen soil obtained from the split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) tests at different high strain rates and temperatures. It is shown that the predictions agree well with the experimental results.  相似文献

Damage in heterogeneous model materials was measured using high-resolution X-ray absorption tomography. The material consisted of an aluminium matrix containing 1% and 4% of spherical ceramic particles acting as nucleation sites for an interface decohesion mechanism of damage. The damage initiation stage was quantified using the global population of particles in the 4% material. A strain path change experiment was then applied to the 1% material. The sample was first deformed in tension in order to create elongated cavities and then compressed at 45° to rotate and close these cavities. The results of a model based on the Rice and Tracey approach accounting for the presence of particles inside the cavities and calculating their rotation with assuming a linear hardening plastic behaviour of the matrix were compared with the observations. The model was modified to account for the damage initiation phase. It was shown to give a good global prediction of the void volume fraction provided that the physical, mechanical and morphological information are corresponding in the experimental and the model cases. The cavity rotation experiment was also shown to compare well with the calculation although only one cavity was sufficiently opened after compression to allow the comparison.  相似文献

Rheological properties of polymer blends with sphere-in-sphere morphology   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The linear viscoelastic behavior of polystyrene (PS) and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) blends with PS as the matrix and amounts of PMMA in the range 10–30 wt% was investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a complex morphology which was characterized by the existence of composite particles; the PMMA particles which are enclosed in the PS matrix themselves carry PS inclusions. In order to explain the G* data of these blends a model is presented which consists of a Palierne model for the composite particles and a Palierne model for the whole blend, taking into account composite and neat particles. Simulations show the principal relevance of the assumptions made. Moreover, it is shown that the measurements agree well with the model for the whole measured frequency region and that the fit parameters, the size of the composite particles and the concentration and size of interior particles are in reasonable agreement with data available from TEM. Based on the micromechanics-based constitutive model, derived in our preceding work [Lee, H.K., Pyo, S.H., 2009. A 3D-damage model for fiber-reinforced brittle composites with microcracks and imperfect interfaces. Journal of Engineering Mechanics-ASCE, in press, doi:10.1061/(ASCE)EM.1943.7889.0000039.], incorporating a multi-level damage model and a continuum damage model, the overall elastic behavior and damage evolution of laminated composite structures are studied in detail. The constitutive model is implemented into the finite element program ABAQUS using a user-subroutine UMAT to solve boundary value problems of the composite structures. The validity of the implemented constitutive model is assured by comparing the predicted stress–strain curves with experimental data available in literature under uniaxial tension with various fiber orientations. The results show that the proposed micromechanics-based constitutive model accurately predict the overall elastic-damage behavior of laminated composite structures having different material compositions, thicknesses and boundary conditions.  相似文献

A recently developed damage-plasticity model for metal matrix composites is examined using the overall approach to damage. In this approach, the damage mechanisms in the composite system are reflected through a single overall damage tensor assuming an elasto-plastic matrix with elastic fibers. It is shown how the model is applied to uniaxially loaded metal-matrix specimens. Each specimen is a symmetric laminate composed of four plies with different orientations. A numerical procedure is formulated and implemented to calculate the stresses, strains, and damage variables in these specimens.

In order to test the validity of the model, a series of uniaxial test experiments are conducted for the damage characterization of the metal-matrix composite. The experiments are conducted on a titanium aluminide SiC-reinforced laminate. Laminate layups of (0/90)s and (± 45)s are tested under uniaxial tension. In order to investigate and model damage evolution, each specimen is loaded to different load levels ranging from the fracture load to 70% of fracture load. Scanning electron microscopy is performed on representative cross-sections of all specimens. This information is then used to quantify damage in the composite system. Damage variables are defined based on the crack density and correlated with the theoretical model. The experimental and numerical results are then compared. Certain recommendations are finally made concerning the determination of damage parameters in metal-matrix composites.

This paper introduces a nonlinear finite element analysis on damage propagation behavior of composite sandwich panels under in-plane uniaxial quasi-static compression after a low velocity impact. The major damage modes due to the impact, including the residual indentation on the impacted facesheet, the initially crushed core under the impacted area, and the delamination are incorporated into the model. A consequential core crushing mechanism is incorporated into the analysis by using an element deactivation technique. Damage propagation behavior, which corresponds to those observed in sandwich compression after impact (SCAI) tests, has been successfully captured in the numerical simulation. The critical far field stress corresponding to the onset of damage propagation at specified critical locations near the damage zone are captured successfully. They show a good correlation with experimental data. These values can be used to effectively predict the residual compressive strength of low-velocity impact damaged composite sandwich panels.  相似文献

The mechanical behavior of uniaxially fiber-reinforced composites with a ductile rubber-toughened epoxy matrix was studied through the finite element analysis of a RVE of the composite microstructure. The fibers were represented by elastic and isotropic solids, while the rubber-modified epoxy matrix behaved as a elasto-viscoplastic solid. The matrix flow stress followed the model developed by Jeong [Jeong, H.-Y., 2002. A new yield function and a hydrostatic stress-controlled void nucleation model for porous solids with pressure-sensitive matrices. International Journal of Solids and Structures 39, 1385–1403.], which included the inherent pressure-sensitivity of the yield stress in the epoxy matrix, the damage due to the cavitation of the rubber particles and subsequent void growth, and the particular features of elastic–viscoplastic behavior in glassy polymers, particularly the intrinsic softening upon yield followed by hardening. Composites with either perfect or weak fiber/matrix interfaces (the latter introduced through cohesive elements) were studied to assess the influence of interface strength on the composite behavior. Simulations under transverse tension and out-of-plane shear were carried out to establish the effect of loading conditions on the dominant deformation and failure micromechanisms. In addition, the corresponding failure locus was obtained and compared with the predictions of current phenomenological failure criteria for composites. The range of validity of these criteria and the areas for further improvement were established by comparison with the numerical results.  相似文献

The present work focuses on the development of a physically-based model for large deformation stress-strain response and anisotropic damage in rubber-toughened glassy polymers. The main features leading to a microstructural evolution (regarding cavitation, void aspect ratio, matrix plastic anisotropy and rubbery phase deformation) in rubber-toughened glassy polymers are introduced in the proposed constitutive model. The constitutive response of the glassy polymer matrix is modelled using the hyperelastic-viscoplastic model of [Boyce et al., 1988] and [Boyce et al., 2000]. The deformation mechanisms of the matrix material are accounted for by two resistances: an elastic-viscoplastic isotropic intermolecular resistance acting in parallel with a visco-hyperelastic anisotropic network resistance, each resistance being modified to account for damage effects by void growth with a variation of the void aspect ratio. The effective contribution of the hyperelastic particles to the overall composite behaviour is taken into account by treating the overall system in a composite scheme framework. The capabilities of the proposed constitutive model are checked by comparing experimental data with numerical simulations. The deformation behaviour of rubber-toughened poly(methyl methacrylate) was investigated experimentally in tension at a temperature of 80 °C and for different constant true strain rates monitored by a video-controlled technique. The reinforcing phase is of the soft core-hard shell type and its diameter is of the order of one hundred nanometers. The particle volume fraction was adjusted from 15% to 45% by increments of 5%. The stress-strain response and the inelastic volumetric strain are found to depend markedly on particle volume fraction. For a wide range of rubber volume fractions, the model simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, a parametric analysis demonstrates the importance of accounting for void shape, matrix plastic anisotropy and rubber content.  相似文献

Weibull parameters of angular alumina particles are determined from experimental tensile test data on high-ceramic-content metal matrix composites using a micromechanical model that accounts for internal damage in the form of particle cracking, the dominant damage mode in these composites. The fraction of broken particles is assessed from the drop of Young's modulus and particle fracture is assumed to be stress controlled. Two extreme load-sharing modes, namely a purely local and a global load-sharing mode, are considered to account for the load redistribution due to particle fracture. Consistent powder strength parameters can be thus “back-calculated” for particles that are embedded in different Al-Cu matrices. On the other hand, this calculation fails for pure Al matrix composites, which exhibit a much larger strain to failure than Al-Cu matrix composites. It is shown that for Al matrix composites, the role of plastic (composite) strain on particle fracture constitutes a second parameter governing particle damage. This finding is rationalized by particle-particle interactions in these tightly packed ceramic particle-reinforced composites, and by the increase of matrix stress heterogeneity that is brought with increasing plastic strain. Failure of the alloyed matrix composites is well described by the (lower bound) local load-sharing micromechanical model, which predicts a catastrophic failure due to an avalanche of damage. The same model predicts failure of pure aluminium matrix composites to occur at the onset of tensile instability, also in agreement with experimental results once the role of plastic strain on damage accumulation is accounted for.  相似文献

Soft biological tissues are frequently modeled as hyperelastic materials. Hyperelastic behavior is typically ensured by the assumption of a stored energy function with a pre-determined shape. This function depends on some material parameters which are obtained through an optimization algorithm in order to fit experimental data from different tests. For example, when obtaining the material parameters of isotropic, incompressible models, only the extension part of a uniaxial test is frequently taken into consideration. In contrast, spline-based models do not require material parameters to exactly fit the experimental data, but need the compression branch of the curve. This is not a disadvantage because as we explain herein, to properly characterize hyperelastic materials, the compression branch of the uniaxial tests (or valid alternative tests) is also needed, in general. Then, unless we know beforehand the tendency of the compression branch, a material model should not be characterized only with tensile tests. For simplicity, here we address isotropic, incompressible materials which use the Valanis-Landel decomposition. However, the concepts are also applicable to compressible isotropic materials and are specially relevant to compressible and incompressible anisotropic materials, because in biomechanics, materials are frequently characterized only by tensile tests.  相似文献
