Dodec-8Z-en-1-ol (VIII) and tetradec-8Z-en-1-ol (IX) and the corresponding acetates (X and IX) — components of the sex pheromones of many species of Lepidoptera — have been synthesized from cyclooctene (I) in three stages. The ozonolysis of (I) (–70°C, CH2Cl2-MeOH, NaHCO3; –20°C, Ac2O/Et3N) led to methyl 8-oxooctanoate (II). The DNPH of (II), (III), mp 59–61°C. The coupling of (II) with n-C3H17 CH=PPh3 (IV) or with n-C5H11 CH=PPh3 (V) (–70°C, 2 h; 25°C, 15 h, Ar) gave the methyl esters of dodec-8Z-enoic (VI) and tetradec-8Z-enoic (VII) acids, respectively. The reduction of (VI) and (VII) [(i-Bu)2AlH, 0°C, 2 h; 25°C, 15 h] gave the corresponding alcohols (VIII) and (IX) by the acetylation (Ac2O-Py, 25°C, 24 h) of which, (X) and (XI), were obtained. The yields (%): (II) 80, (VI) 45, (VII) 60, (VIII) 95, (IX) 90, (X) 75, (XI) 74. The stabilization of cis-hexadec-11-enal — the main component of the sex pheromone of the boll worm — by additions of tocopherol has been studied by UV spectroscopy. The substrate specificity of a proteolytic enzyme — protease C — isolated from cotton seeds has been studied. The activity of protease C is suppressed completely under the action of diisopropyl phosphorofluoridate. Protein inhibitors — duck ovomucoid, soybean inhibitor, and also TPCK — suppressed the activity of protease C to different degrees. On the basis of results obtained in the hydrolysis of the cottonseed reserve proteins, 7S and 11S globulins, and the B chain of insulin, protease C has been assigned to the serine group of endopeptidases. The 11S globulins of two varieties of the cotton plant — 108-F and Tashkent-1 — have been studied. It has been shown that the 11S globulins do not differ in quaternary structure and each consists of three subunits A, B, and C. A new route to the synthesis of a number of attractants of Lepidoptera(Argyrotaenia velutinana, Mamestra configurata, andLycorea ceres ceres) have been developed. These substances are acetates of enols with the cis configuration: tetradec-11-en-1-ol, hexadec-11-en-1-ol, and octadec-11-en-1-ol, respectively. The constants of the substances obtained agree completely with those given in the literature. The method is based on the coupling of the C3, C5, and C7 aldehydes with methyl 11-bromoundecanoate (I) by the Wittig reaction. To obtain compound (I) from methyl undeca-2E,5E,10-trienoate or methyl undeca-10-enoate we used hydroboration according to Brown followed by hydrogenation and bromination of the alcohol obtained. The advantage of this method is the use as starting materials of esters of unsaturated acids readily obtained by the homogeneous catalytic co-oligomerization of 1,3-dienes with acrylates.Institute of Chemistry, Bashkir Branch, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Ufa. The rate constants and stoichiometric coefficients of chain termination in the oxidation of lipid models (methyl esters of acids of the oleic series: cis-6-, cis-9-, trans-9-, and trans-11-C17H33COOCH3) by the main representative of the follicular hormones — estrone (313–348 K) — and for comparison by the phenol 2,6-ditert-butyl-4-methylphenol (323.15 K) were measured.
