An element a of a semigroup S is a left magnifier if λa, the inner left translation associated with a, is surjective and is not injective (E. S. Ljapin [11]). When this happens there exists a proper subset M of S such that the restriction to M of λa is bijective. In that case M is said to be a minimal subset for the left magnifier a (F. Migliorini [13], [14], [15]). Remark that if S is a semigroup having left identities then every left magnifier of S admits minimal subsets which are right ideals. Characterisations for semigroups with left magnifiers which also contain left identities have been given by E. S. Ljapin and R. Desq, using the bicyclic monoid. The general problem, precisely to give a characterization of semigroups having left magnifiers, is still open.  相似文献

The p n -sequence of a semigroup S is said to be polynomially bounded, if there exist a positive constant c and a positive integer r such that the inequality p n (S) ≤cn r holds for all n≥ 1. In this paper, we fully describe all finite semigroups having polynomially bounded p n -sequences. First we give a characterization in terms of identities satisfied by these semigroups. In the sequel, this result will allow an insight into the structure of such semigroups. We are going to deal with certain ideals and the construction of ideal extension of semigroups. In addition, we supply an effective procedure for deciding whether a finite semigroup has polynomially bounded p n -sequence and give some examples. We study the character amenability of semigroup algebras. We work on general semigroups and certain semigroups such as inverse semigroups with a finite number of idempotents, inverse semigroups with uniformly locally finite idempotent set, Brandt and Rees semigroup and study the character amenability of the semigroup algebra l1(S) in relation to the structures of the semigroup S. In particular, we show that for any semigroup S, if ?1(S) is character amenable, then S is amenable and regular. We also show that the left character amenability of the semigroup algebra ?1(S) on a Brandt semigroup S over a group G with index set J is equivalent to the amenability of G and J being finite. Finally, we show that for a Rees semigroup S with a zero over the group G, the left character amenability of ?1(S) is equivalent to its amenability, this is in turn equivalent to G being amenable.  相似文献

Finite generation and presentability of general unions of semigroups, as well as of bands of semigroups, bands of monoids, semilattices of semigroups and strong semilattices of semigroups, are investigated. For instance, it is proved that a band Y of monoids S α (α∈ Y ) is finitely generated/presented if and only if Y is finite and all S α are finitely generated/presented. By way of contrast, an example is exhibited of a finitely generated semigroup which is not finitely presented, but which is a disjoint union of two finitely presented subsemigroups. In the present paper it is shown that if S1 and S2 are two Clifford topological semigroups satisfying certain conditions and T is an isometric isomorphism of LUC(S1*) onto LUC(S2*), then T maps S1 topologically isomorphically onto S2. Furthermore, T maps M l n(S1) (M(S1), respectively) isometrically isomorphically onto M l n(S2) (M(S2), respectively). Indeed, we have obtained a generalization of a well-known result of Ghahramani, Lau and Losert for locally compact groups to a more general setting of Clifford topological semigroups.  相似文献

Superabundant semigroups are generalizations of completely regular semigroups written the class of abundant semigroups. It has been shown by Fountain that an abundant semigroup is superabundant if and only if it is a semilattice of completely J *-simple semigroups. Reilly and Petrich called a semigroup S cryptic if the Green's relation H is a congruence on S. In this paper, we call a superabundant semigroup S a regular crypto semigroup if H * is a congruence on S such that S/H * is a regular band. It will be proved that a superabundant semigroup S is a regular crypto semigroup if and only if S is a refined semilattice of completely J *-simple semigroups. Thus, regular crypto semigroups are generalization of the cryptic semigroups as well as abundant semigroups.  相似文献

On any regular semigroup S, the greatest idempotent pure congruence τ the greatest idempotent separating congruence μ and the least band congruence β are used to give the S-classification of regular semigroups as follows. These congruences generate a sublattice Λ of the congruence lattice C(S) of S. We consider the triples (Λ,K,T), where K and T are the restrictions of the K- and T-relations on C(S) to Λ. Such triples are characterized abstractly and form the objects of a category S whose morphisms are surjective K- and T-preserving homomorphisms subject to a mild condition. The class of regular semigroups is made into a category S whose morphisms are fairly restricted homomorphisms. The main result of the paper is the existence of a representative functor from S to S. The effect of the S-classification on Reilly semigroups and cryptogroups is discussed briefly.  相似文献

Recall that the semigroups S and R are said to be strongly Morita equivalent if there exists a unitary Morita context (S, R., S P R,R Q S ,〈〉 , ⌈⌉) with 〈〉 and ⌈⌉ surjective. For a factorisable semigroup S, we denote ζ S = {(s 1, s 2) ∈S×S|ss 1 = ss 2, ∀sS}, S' = S S and US-FAct = { S MS− Act |SM = M and SHom S (S, M) ≅M}. We show that, for factorisable semigroups S and M, the categories US-FAct and UR-FAct are equivalent if and only if the semigroups S' and R' are strongly Morita equivalent. Some conditions for a factorisable semigroups to be strongly Morita equivalent to a sandwich semigroup, local units semigroup, monoid and group separately are also given. Moreover, we show that a semigroup S is completely simple if and only if S is strongly Morita equivalent to a group and for any index set I, SSHom S (S, ∐ i∈I S) →∐ i∈I S, st·ƒ↦ (st)ƒ is an S-isomorphism. It is well known that S 12 cannot prove the injective weak pigeonhole principle for polynomial time functions unless RSA is insecure. In this note we investigate the provability of the surjective (dual) weak pigeonhole principle in S 12 for provably weaker function classes. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The diagonal right act of a semigroup S is the set S × S, with S acting by componentwise multiplication from the right. The diagonal left act and diagonal bi-act of S are defined analogously.

Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for the finite generation of the diagonal bi-acts of completely zero-simple semigroups and completely simple semigroups. It is also proved that various classes of semigroups do not have finitely generated or cyclic diagonal right, left, or bi-acts.  相似文献

Given a subgroup G of the symmetric group S n on n letters, a semigroup S of transformations of X n is G-normal if G S =G, where G S consists of all permutations hS n such that h −1 fhS for all fS. A semigroup S is G-normax if it is a maximal semigroup in the set of all G-normal semigroups. In 1996, I. Levi showed that the alternating group A n can not serve as the group G S for any semigroup of total transformations of X n . In 2000 and 2001, I. Levi, D.B. McAlister and R.B. McFadden described all A n -normal semigroups of partial transformations of X n . Also, in 1994, I. Levi and R.B. McFadden described all S n -normal semigroups. In this paper, we show that the dihedral group D n may serve as the group G S for semigroups of transformations of X n . We characterize a large class of D n -normax semigroups and describe certain D n -normal semigroups.  相似文献

In this paper we give a sufficient condition for regular semigroups with a finite height function to be left absolutely flat. As a consequence, we can show that the semigroup Λ(S) of all right translations of a primitive regular semigroupS with only finitely manyR-classes, with composition being from left to right, is absolutely flat and give a generalization of a Bulman-Fleming and McDowell result concerning absolutely flat semigroups from primitive regular semigroups to regular semigroups with a finite height function. These results give examples of semigroups which are amalgamation bases in the class of semigroups. The author thanks the referee for finding errors in the original version of this paper.  相似文献

Let S be a semigroup. In this paper we investigate the injectivity of ?1(S) as a Banach right module over ?1(S). For weakly cancellative S this is the same as studying the flatness of the predual left module c0(S). For such semigroups S, we also investigate the projectivity of c0(S). We prove that for many semigroups S for which the Banach algebra ?1(S) is non-amenable, the ?1(S)-module ?1(S) is not injective. The main result about the projectivity of c0(S) states that for a weakly cancellative inverse semigroup S, c0(S) is projective if and only if S is finite.  相似文献

We consider the question of membership of AG, where A and G are the pseudovarieties of finite aperiodic semigroups, and finite groups, respectively. We find a straightforward criterion for a semigroup S lying in a class of finite semigroups that are weakly abundant, to be in AG. The class of weakly abundant semigroups contains the class of regular semigroups, but is much more extensive; we remark that any finite monoid with semilattice of idempotents is weakly abundant. To study such semigroups we develop a number of techniques that may be of interest in their own right.  相似文献

In this paper we study sub-semigroups of a finite or an infinite zero-divisor semigroup S determined by properties of the zero-divisor graph Γ(S). We use these sub-semigroups to study the correspondence between zero-divisor semigroups and zero-divisor graphs. In particular, we discover a class of sub-semigroups of reduced semigroups and we study properties of sub-semigroups of finite or infinite semilattices with the least element. As an application, we provide a characterization of the graphs which are zero-divisor graphs of Boolean rings. We also study how local property of Γ(S) affects global property of the semigroup S, and we discover some interesting applications. In particular, we find that no finite or infinite two-star graph has a corresponding nil semigroup.  相似文献

A semigroup S is called an absolute coretract if for any continuous homomorphism f from a compact Hausdorff right topological semigroup T onto a compact Hausdorff right topological semigroup containing S algebraically there exists a homomorphism g \colon S→ T such that f\circ g=id S . The semigroup β\ben contains isomorphic copies of any countable absolute coretract. In this article we define a class C of semigroups of idempotents each of which is a decreasing chain of rectangular semigroups. It is proved that every semigroup from C is an absolute coretract and every finite semigroup of idempotents, which is an absolute coretract, belongs to C . July 25, 2000  相似文献

Let S be a grading monoid with quotient group q(S) , let F(S) be the set of fractional ideals of S . For A ∈ F(S) , define A w = {x ∈ q(S) \mid J+x \subseteq A for some f.g. ideal J of S with J -1 =S} and A_ \overline w ={x ∈ q(S)\mid J+x \subseteq A for some ideal J of S with J -1 =S} . Then w and \overline w are star-operations on F(S) such that w ≤ \overline w . Using these star-operations, we give characterizations of Krull semigroups and pre-Krull semigroups. Also we show that for every maximal * -ideal P of S , if S P is a valuation semigroup, then * -cancellation ideals are * -locally principal ideals, where * is a star-operation on S of finite character. Finally, we show that S is a pre-Krull semigroup (H-semigroup) if and only if the polynomial semigroup S[x] is a pre-Krull semigroup (H-semigroup). October 15, 1999  相似文献

The rank of a commutative cancellative semigroup S is the cardinality of a maximal independent subset of S. Commutative cancellative semigroups of finite rank are subarchimedean and thus admit a Tamura-like representation. We characterize these semigroups in several ways and provide structure theorems in terms of a construction akin to the one devised by T. Tamura for N-semigroups.  相似文献

We prove that given a finite (zero) exact right decomposition (M, T) of a semigroup S, if M is defined by a finite complete presentation, then S is also defined by a finite complete presentation. Exact right decompositions are natural generalizations to semigroups of coset decompositions in groups. As a consequence, we deduce that any Zappa–Szép extension of a monoid defined by a finite complete presentation, by a finite monoid, is also defined by such a presentation.

It is also proved that a semigroup M 0[A; I, J; P], where A and P satisfy some very general conditions, is also defined by a finite complete presentation.  相似文献
