The boundary layer flow over a uniformly moving vertical surface with suction or injection is studied when the buoyancy forces assist or oppose the flow. Similarity solutions are obtained for the boundary layer equations subject to power law temperature and velocity boundary conditions. The effect is of various governing parameters, such as Prandtl number Pr, temperature exponent n, injection parameter d, and the mixed convection parameter λ=Gr/Re2, which determine the velocity and temperature distributions and the heat transfer coefficient, are studied. The heat transfer coefficient increases as λ assisting the flow for all d at Pr=0.72 however, for n=−1 it decreases sharply with λ. On the other hand, increasing λ has no effect on heat transfer coefficient for Pr=10 at n=0, and 1 for almost all values of d studied. However, for n=−1 it has similar effect as for Pr=0.72. It is also found that Nusselt number increases as n increases for fixed λ and d. Received on 26 March 1997  相似文献

A boundary layer analysis was presented to study the non-Darcy-free convection of a power-law fluid over a non-isothermal two-dimensional body embedded in a porous medium. The Ostwald-de Waele power-law model was used to characterize the non-Newtonian fluid behavior. Similarity solutions were obtained with variations in surface temperature or surface heat flux. In view of the fact that most of the non-Newtonian fluids have large Prandtl numbers, this study was directed toward such fluids. The effects of the porous medium parameters, k 1 and k 2, body shape parameter, m, and surface thermal variations parameter, p, as well as the power-law index, n, were examined.  相似文献

In this paper the problem of momentum and heat transfer in a thin liquid film of power-law fluid on an unsteady stretching surface has been studied. Numerical solutions are obtained for some representative values of the unsteadiness parameter S and the power-law index n for a wide range of the generalized Prandtl number, 0.001 ≤ Pr ≤ 1000. Typical temperature and velocity profiles, the dimensionless film thickness, free-surface temperature, and the surface heat fluxes are presented at selected controlling parameters. The results show that increasing the value of n tends to increase the boundary-layer thickness and broadens the temperature distributions. The free-surface temperature of a shear thinning fluid is larger than that of a Newtonian fluid, but the opposite trend is true for a shear thickening fluid. For small generalized Prandtl numbers, the surface heat flux increases with a decrease in n, but the impacts of n on the heat transfer diminish for Pr greater than a moderate value (approximately 1 ≤ Pr ≤ 10, depending on the magnitude of S).  相似文献

An analysis is made for the steady two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic flow of an incompressible viscous and electrically conducting fluid over a stretching vertical sheet in its own plane. The stretching velocity, the surface temperature and the transverse magnetic field are assumed to vary in a power-law with the distance from the origin. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically for some values of the involved parameters, namely the magnetic parameter M, the velocity exponent parameter m, the temperature exponent parameter n and the buoyancy parameter λ, while the Prandtl number Pr is fixed, namely Pr = 1, using a finite difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Similarity solutions are obtained in the presence of the buoyancy force if n = 2m−1. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the governing parameters are analyzed and discussed. It is found that both the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number decrease as the magnetic parameter M increases for fixed λ and m. For m = 0.2 (i.e. n = −0.6), although the sheet and the fluid are at different temperatures, there is no local heat transfer at the surface of the sheet except at the singular point of the origin (fixed point).  相似文献

Exact solutions are obtained for the heat transfer in an electrically conducting fluid past a stretching sheet subjected to the thermal boundary with either a prescribed temperature or a prescribed heat flux in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The solutions for the heat transfer characteristics are evaluated numerically for different parameters, such as the magnetic parameterN, the Prandtl numberPr, the surface temperature indexs, and the surface heat flux indexd. It is observed that for the prescribed surface temperature case the fluid temperature increases due to the existance of the magnetic field, and decreases as the Prandtl number or the surface temperature index increases; for the prescribed surface heat flux case, the surface temperature decreases as the Prandtl number of the surface heat flux index increases, and the magnetic parameter decreases. In addition, varying the prescribed surface temperature indexs affects the mechanism of heat transfer.  相似文献

The present study is devoted to investigate the influences of mass transfer on buoyancy induced flow over vertical flat plate embedded in a non-Newtonian fluid saturated porous medium. The Ostwald–de Waele power-law model is used to characterize the non-Newtonian fluid behavior. Similarity solution for the transformed governing equations is obtained with prescribed variable surface heat flux. Numerical results for the details of the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are shown on graphs. Excess surface temperature as well as concentration gradient at the wall associated with heat flux distributions, which are entered in tables, have been presented for different values of the power-law index n, buoyancy ration B and the exponent λ as well as Lewis number Le. Flow and heat transfer over a permeable sensor surface placed in a squeezing channel is analyzed. A constant transpiration through the sensor surface is assumed. Locally non-similar momentum and energy equations are solved by three different methods, against the transpiration parameter τ, for different values of the squeezing parameter b, and Prandtl number Pr. From the investigation, it is found that when the channel being squeezed, the skin-friction reduces but the heat transfer coefficient increases. Increase in the value of the squeezing parameter onsets reverse flow at the sensor surface when fluid is being injected and the affect is enhanced with the increase of injection through the surface. It is further observed that increase of suction of fluid through the sensor thins the thermal and the momentum boundary layer regions, whereas injection of fluid leads to thickening of both the thermal and the momentum boundary layer regions. Heat transfer from the surface of the sensor increases with the increase of the value of Pr for the entire range of surface mass-flux parameter τ. M. A.  An numerical study of the flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with a heated, continuously stretching surface being cooled by a mixed convection flow has been carried out. The relevant heat transfer mechanisms are of interest in a wide variety of practical applications, such as hot rolling, continuous casting, extrusion, and drawing. The surface velocity of the continuously stretching sheet was assumed to vary according to a power-law form, that is, u w (x)=Cx p . Two conditions of surface heating were considered, a variable wall temperature (VWT) in the form T w (x)−T =Ax n and a variable surface heat flux (VHF) in the form q w (x)=Bx m . The governing differential equations are transformed by introducing proper nonsimilarity variables and solved numerically using a procedure based on finite difference approximations. Results for the local Nusselt number and the local friction coefficient are obtained for a wide range of governing parameters, such as the surface velocity parameter p, the wall temperature exponent n, the surface heat flux exponent m, the buoyancy force parameters (ξ for the VWT case and χ for the VHF case), and Prandtl number of the fluid. It is found that the local Nusselt number is increased with increasing the velocity exponent parameter p for the VWT case, while the opposite trend is observed for the VHF case. The local friction coefficient is increased for a decelerated stretching surface, while it is decreased for an accelerated stretching surface. Also, appreciable effects of the buoyancy force on the local Nusselt number and the local friction coefficient are observed for both VWT and VHF cases, as expected. An analysis is presented for the steady non-linear viscous flow of an incompressible viscous fluid over a horizontal surface of variable temperature with a power-law velocity under the influences of suction/blowing, viscous dissipation and thermal radiation. Numerical results are illustrated by means of tables and graphs. The governing partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations by a similarity transformation. The effects of the stretching parameter n, suction/blowing parameter b, Prandtl number σ, Eckert number Ec(Ec * )E_{c}(E_{c}^{ *} ) and radiation parameter N R are discussed. Two cases are studied, namely, (i) Prescribed surface temperature (PST case) and, (ii) Prescribed heat flux at the sheet (PHF case).  相似文献

The effect of thermoviscosity (temperature-dependent viscosity) on the heat transfer in a power-law liquid film over an unsteady stretching sheet is investigated. Similarity analysis is used to transform the governing equations for mass, momentum and energy into a system of ordinary differential equations, which contain a thermoviscosity parameter θr, unsteadiness parameter S, generalized Prandtl number Pr and power-law index n. The film thickness, the temperature distributions, the local heat transfer rate, and the local skin-friction coefficient were obtained using the Chebyshev finite difference method (ChFD). The results show that thermoviscosity significantly increases the film thickness and the local heat transfer rate while decreasing the local skin-friction coefficient as θr  1. It is found that liquids with a higher power-law index will have a larger film thickness and a higher free-surface temperature, which indicate a lower local heat transfer rate, ?θ′(0).  相似文献

The analysis of laminar mixed convection in boundary layers adjacent to a vertical, continuously stretching sheet has been presented. The velocity and temperature of the sheet were assumed to vary in a power-law form, that is, u w (x)=Bx m and T w (x)−T =Ax n . In the presence of buoyancy force effects, similarity solutions were reported for the following two cases: (a) n=0 and m=0.5, which corresponds to an isothermal sheet moving with a velocity of the form u w =Bx 0.5 and (b) n=1 and m=1, which corresponds to a continuous, linearly stretching sheet with a linear surface temperature distribution, i.e. T w T =Ax. Formulation of the present problem shows that the heat transfer characteristics depends on four governing parameters, namely, the velocity exponent parameter m, the temperature exponent parameter n, the buoyancy force parameter G *, and Prandtl number of the fluid. Numerical solutions were generated from a finite difference method. Results for the local Nusselt number, the local friction coefficient, and temperature profiles are presented for different governing parameters. Effects of buoyancy force and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are thoroughly examined. Received on 17 July 1997  相似文献

A mixed convection flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid along a horizontal circular cylinder has been studied with the effect of radiation when the surface temperature is uniform. Using appropriate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to local nonsimilarity form. Solutions of the governing equations are obtained employing the implicit finite difference method. Effects of varying the pertinent parameters, such as, the Planck number, R w the surface temperature parameter, θw and the buoyancy parameter, α on the local skin-friction and local heat transfer coefficients are shown graphically as well as in tabular form against the curvature parameter ξ, while taking Prandtl number Pr = 1.0. It is found that an increase of R dw or α leads to increases in the values of the local skin-friction and the local rate of heat transfer coefficients. At the stagnation point asymptotic solutions for large value of α are also obtained and the effect of the other pertinent parameters on the formation of the flow separation are studied. A detailed numerical study of laminar forced convection in a porous channel which contains a fibrous medium saturated with a power-law fluid was performed. Hydrodynamic and heat transfer results are presented for a configuration that has uniform heat flux or uniform temperature heating at the walls. The flow in the porous medium was modeled using the modified Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy model for power law fluids in which the non-Darcy effects of inertia and boundary were considered. Parametric studies were conducted to examine the effects of Darcy number, power law index, inertia parameter and Prandtl number. The results indicate that when the power law index is decreased, the velocity gradient near the walls increases but these effects are reduced gradually as the Darcy number decreases until the Darcy regime (Da≤10−6) is reached in which case the effects of power law index become negligible. As the power law index is decreased, the thermal boundary layer thickness decreases significantly only in the non-Darcy regime. Consequently, as the power law index decreases, the fully developed Nusselt number increases considerably in the non-Darcy regime whereas in the Darcy regime the change in Nusselt number is very small. As the Prandtl number increases, the local Nusselt number increases and this effect is more significant for shear thinning fluids (n<1.0). Received on 2 March 1998  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of free convection boundary layer flow on a solid sphere in a micropolar fluid with Newtonian heating, in which the heat transfer from the surface is proportional to the local surface temperature, is considered. The transformed boundary layer equations in the form of partial differential equations are solved numerically using an implicit finite-difference scheme. Numerical solutions are obtained for the local wall temperature, the local skin friction coefficient, as well as the velocity, angular velocity and temperature profiles. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the material or micropolar parameter K, the Prandtl number Pr and the conjugate parameter γ are analyzed and discussed.  相似文献

Similarity solutions for the three-dimensional flow and heat transfer of a power-law fluid near a stagnation point of an isothermal surface are presented. The results of the numerical integrations are given in tables and shown on graphs for some different values of the power-law index n, geometric parameter c, and the Prandtl number Pr. Whenever possible, these results are compared with available analytical solutions and found to be highly accurate.  相似文献

The transient boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting non-Newtonian power-law fluid in a stagnation region of a two-dimensional body in the presence of an applied magnetic field have been studied when the motion is induced impulsively from rest. The non-linear partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer have been solved by the homotopy analysis method and by an implicit finite-difference scheme. For some cases, analytical or approximate solutions have also been obtained. The special interest are the effects of the power-law index, magnetic parameter and the generalized Prandtl number on the surface shear stress and heat transfer rate. In all cases, there is a smooth transition from the transient state to steady state. The shear stress and heat transfer rate at the surface are found to be significantly influenced by the power-law index N except for large time and they show opposite behaviour for steady and unsteady flows. The magnetic field strongly affects the surface shear stress, but its effect on the surface heat transfer rate is comparatively weak except for large time. On the other hand, the generalized Prandtl number exerts strong influence on the surface heat transfer. The skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number decrease rapidly in a small interval 0<t*<1 and reach the steady-state values for t*≥4.  相似文献

The boundary layer flow and heat transfer on a stretched surface moving with prescribed skin friction is studied for permeable surface. Three major cases are studied for isothermal surface (n=0) stretched corresponding to different dimensional skin friction boundary conditions namely; skin friction at the surface scales as (x ?1/2) at m=0, constant skin friction at m=1/3 and skin friction scales as (x) at m=1. The constants m and n are the indices of the power law velocity and temperature exponent respectively. Similarity solutions are obtained for the boundary layer equations subject to power law temperature and velocity variation. The effect of various governing parameters, such as Prandtl number Pr, suction/injection parameter f w , m and n are studied. The results show that for isothermal surface increasing m enhances the dimensionless heat transfer coefficient for fixed f w at the suction case and the reverse is true at the injection case. Furthermore, for fixed m, as f w increases the dimensionless heat transfer coefficient increases. Large enhancements are observed in the heat transfer coefficient as the temperature boundary condition along the surface changes from uniform to linear where the dimensional skin friction is of order (x) at m=1. This enhancement decreases as the suction increases.  相似文献

The paper considers the flow of a power-law fluid past a vertical stretching sheet. Effects of variable thermal conductivity and non-uniform heat source/sink on the heat transfer are addressed. The thermal conductivity is assumed to vary linearly with temperature. Similarity transformation is used to convert the governing partial differential equations into a set of coupled, non-linear ordinary differential equations. Two different types of boundary heating are considered, namely Prescribed power-law Surface Temperature (PST) and Prescribed power-law Heat Flux (PHF). Shooting method is used to obtain the numerical solution for the resulting boundary value problems. The effects of Chandrasekhar number, Grashof number, Prandtl number, non-uniform heat source/sink parameters, wall temperature parameter and variable thermal conductivity parameter on the dynamics are shown graphically in several plots. The skin friction and heat transfer coefficients are tabulated for a range of values of the parameters. Present study reveals that in a gravity affected flow buoyancy effect has a significant say in the control of flow and heat transfer.  相似文献

A free convertion flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid along a vertical thin circular cylinder has been studied with effect of radiation when the surface temperature is uniform. With appropriate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to local nonsimilarity equations. Solutions of the governing equations are obtained employing the implicit finite difference methods together with Keller box scheme as well the local nonsimilarity method with second order truncation for all ξ (nondimensional transverse curvature parameter) in the interval [0,10] and are expressed in terms of local Nusselt number for a range of values of the pertinent parameters. Effects of pertinent parameters, such as, the radiation parameter, R d , the surface temperature parameter, θ w , taking Prandtl number, Pr, equals 0.7 on the velocity and temperature field are also presented graphically. From the solution it is seen that increase of R d , or θ w leads to increase in the local rate of heat transfer coefficients. Results obtained by both the methods are obtained in excellent agreement between each other upto ξ = 10.  相似文献
