Arborescent copolymers with a core‐shell‐corona (CSC) architecture, incorporating a polystyrene (PS) core, an inner shell of poly(2‐vinylpyridine), P2VP, and a corona of PS chains, were obtained by anionic polymerization and grafting. Living PS‐b‐P2VP‐Li block copolymers serving as side chains were obtained by capping polystyryllithium with 1,1‐diphenylethylene before adding 2‐vinylpyridine. A linear or arborescent (generation G0 – G3) PS substrate, randomly functionalized with acetyl or chloromethyl coupling sites, was then added to the PS‐b‐P2VP‐Li solution for the grafting reaction. The grafting yield and the coupling efficiency observed in the synthesis of the arborescent PS‐g‐(P2VP‐b‐PS) copolymers were much lower than for analogous coupling reactions previously used to synthesize arborescent PS homopolymers and PS‐g‐P2VP copolymers from the same types of coupling sites. It was determined from static and dynamic light scattering analysis that PS‐b‐P2VP formed aggregates in THF, the solvent used for the synthesis. This presumably hindered coupling of the macroanions with the substrate, and explains the low grafting yield and coupling efficiency observed in these reactions. Purification of the crude products was also problematic due to the amphipolar character of the CSC copolymers and the block copolymer contaminant. A new fractionation method by cloud‐point centrifugation was developed to purify copolymers of generations G1 and above. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Polymer complexes were prepared from high molecular weight poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(styrene)‐block‐poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) in dimethyl formamide (DMF). The hydrogen bonding interactions, phase behavior, and morphology of the complexes were investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this A‐b‐B/C type block copolymer/homopolymer system, P4VP block of the block copolymer has strong intermolecular interaction with PAA which led to the formation of nanostructured micelles at various PAA concentrations. The pure PS‐b‐P4VP block copolymer showed a cylindrical rodlike morphology. Spherical micelles were observed in the complexes and the size of the micelles increased with increasing PAA concentration. The micelles are composed of hydrogen‐bonded PAA/P4VP core and non‐bonded PS corona. Finally, a model was proposed to explain the microphase morphology of complex based on the experimental results obtained. The selective swelling of the PS‐b‐P4VP block copolymer by PAA resulted in the formation of different micelles. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The complexation between polystyrene‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) (PS‐b‐PAA) micelles and poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (PEG‐b‐P4VP) is studied, and a facile strategy is proposed to prepare core‐shell‐corona micellar complexes. Micellization of PS‐b‐PAA in ethanol forms spherical core‐shell micelles with PS block as core and PAA block as shell. When PEG‐b‐P4VP is added into the core‐shell micellar solution, the P4VP block is absorbed into the core‐shell micelles to form spherical core‐shell‐corona micellar complexes with the PS block as core, the combined PAA/P4VP blocks as shell and the PEG block as corona. A model is suggested to characterize the core‐shell‐corona micellar complexes.

Blends of poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (P2VP‐b‐PMMA) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) were prepared by solvent casting from chloroform solution. The specific interactions, phase behavior and nanostructure morphologies of these blends were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In this block copolymer/homopolymer blend system, it is established that competitive hydrogen bonding exists as both blocks of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA are capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with phenoxy. It was observed that the interaction between phenoxy and P2VP is stronger than that between phenoxy and PMMA. This imbalance in the intermolecular interactions and the repulsions between the two blocks of the diblock copolymer lead to a variety of phase morphologies. At low phenoxy concentration, spherical micelles are observed. As the concentration increases, PMMA begins to interact with phenoxy, leading to the changes of morphology from spherical to wormlike micelles and finally forms a homogenous system. A model is proposed to describe the self‐assembled nanostructures of the P2VP‐b‐PMMA/phenoxy blends, and the competitive hydrogen bonding is responsible for the morphological changes. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report manipulation of polymer nano‐objects by changing solvents through chemically crosslinking the spherical micelles of poly(3‐(triethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate)‐block‐polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (PTEPM‐b‐PS‐b‐P2VP). In methanol, which is a common solvent of PTEPM and P2VP but poor of PS, PTEPM‐b‐PS‐b‐P2VP forms micelles with a PS core. When changing the medium into acidic water, the PTEPM segments further collapse and gelate to form a crosslinked shell outside of the PS core. When the particles are re‐dispersed into tetrahydrofuran (THF), the PS segments are extracted out, producing uniform small cavity of few nanometers in each particle. Thus one sample can be used to generate well‐defined nano‐objects with different appearance by solvent manipulation. The particle structure development has been characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), DLS, and 1H NMR. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2012  相似文献

A well‐defined amphiphilic coil‐rod block copolymer, poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐b‐poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate) (P2VP‐b‐PHIC), was synthesized with quantitative yields by anionic polymerization. A low reactive one‐directional initiator, potassium diphenyl methane (DPM‐K), was very effective in polymerizing 2‐vinyl pyridine (2VP) without side reactions, leading to perfect control over molecular weight and molecular weight distribution over a broad range of initiator and monomer concentration. Copolymerization of 2VP with n‐hexyl isocyanate (HIC) was carried out in the presence of sodium tetraphenyl borate (NaBPh4) to prevent backbiting reactions during isocyanate polymerization. Terminating the living end with a suitable end‐capping agent resulted in a P2VP‐b‐PHIC coil‐rod block copolymer with controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. Cast film from a chloroform solution of P2VP‐b‐PHIC displayed microphase separation, characteristic of coil‐rod block copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A variety of sub‐10 nm nanoparticles are successfully prepared by crosslinking of polystyrene‐b‐poly(1,3‐butadiene) (PS‐b‐PB) and polystyrene‐b‐poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) block copolymer micelles and inverse micelles. Among them, the core‐crosslinked PS‐b‐PB micelles can self‐assemble into ultrathin (< 10 nm) macroporous (pore size <1 µm) membranes in a facile way, i.e., by simply drop‐coating the particle solution onto a mica surface. No continuous/porous membranes are produced from shell‐crosslinked PS‐b‐PB micelles and both forms of PS‐b‐P4VP micelles. This suggests that the unique structure of the block copolymer precursor, including the very flexible core‐forming block and the glassy corona‐forming block and the specific block length ratio, directly determines the formation of the macroporous membrane.

We have studied the self‐assembly of the ABA triblock copolymer (P4VP‐b‐PS‐b‐P4VP) in dilute solution by using binary block‐selective solvents, that is, water and methanol. The triblock copolymer was first dissolved in dioxane to form a homogeneous solution. Subsequently, a given volume of selective solvent was added slowly to the solution to induce self‐assembly of the copolymer. It was found that the copolymer (P4VP43b‐PS366b‐P4VP43) tended to form spherical aggregate or bilayer structure when we used methanol or water as the single selective solvent, respectively. However, the aggregates with various nanostructures were obtained by using mixtures of water and methanol as the block‐selective solvents. The aggregate structure changed from sphere to rod, vesicle, and then to bilayer by changing water content in the block‐selective solvent from 0 to 100%. Moreover, it was found that the vesicle size could be well controlled by changing the copolymer content in the solution. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Molecular‐level understanding of the vesicular structure and formation process is beneficial for potential vesicle applications, especially in drug delivery. In this article, coarse‐grained molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the self‐assembly behavior of amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)‐b‐polystyrene copolymers in water at different concentrations and PS/PAA block ratios. It was found that various spherical and tube‐like vesicles formed at PS/PAA 3:3 and 4:2. For spherical vesicles, analysis of vesicular structure indicated that the cavity size was influenced by copolymer concentration and wall thickness by the block ratio. Tube‐like vesicle was formed via the fusion of two spherical vesicles, and a key factor for this morphology is polymer movements between inner and outer layer. This simulation study identifies the key factors governing vesicle formation and structure, and provides a guidance to design and prepare various vesicles for wide applications in drug delivery. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The light‐responsive behavior in solution and in thin films of block copolymers bearing 2‐nitrobenzyl photocleavable esters as side groups is discussed in this article. The polymers were synthesized by grafting 2‐nitrobenzyl moieties onto poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐polystyrene (PAA‐b‐PS) precursor polymers, leading to poly(2‐nitrobenzyl acrylate‐random‐acrylic acid)‐block‐polystyrene (P(NBA‐r‐AA)‐b‐PS) block copolymers. The UV irradiation of the block copolymers in a selective solvent for PS led to the formation of micelles that were used to trap hydrophilic molecules inside their core (light‐induced encapsulation). In addition, thin films consisting of light‐responsive P(NBA‐r‐AA) cylinders surrounded by a PS matrix were achieved by the self‐assembly of P(NBA‐r‐AA)‐b‐PS copolymers onto silicon substrates. Exposing these films to UV irradiation generates nanostructured materials containing carboxylic acids inside the cylindrical nanodomains. The availability of these chemical functions was demonstrated by reacting them with a functional fluorescent dye. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization afforded triple hydrogen‐bonding block copolymers (PBA‐b‐PDAD) with well‐controlled molecular weight and molecular weight distributions (1.2–1.4). The complexation via specific hydrogen bonding between these block copolymers in CHCl3 provided an unprecedented approach for the formation of spherical vesicles. Atomic force microscopy and dynamic light‐scattering measurements revealed that the resultant polymeric vesicles were about 100 nm in radius. Triple hydrogen‐bonding interactions between maleimide and PBA‐b‐PDAD resulted in the dissociation of these spherical vesicles, facilitating the guest molecule recognition. The hydrogen‐bonding interaction between maleimide and the PBA‐b‐PDAD was further confirmed by 1H NMR and FTIR spectra. These results indicated that these vesicles of triple hydrogen‐bonding block copolymer could be a potential new vehicle for molecular recognition. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A simple route to organic–inorganic (O/I) nano‐objects with different morphologies through polymerization‐induced block copolymer self‐assembly is described. The synthetic strategy relies on the chain‐extension of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)‐containing macro‐CTA (PMAiBuPOSS13 and PMAiBuPOSS19) with styrene at 120 °C in octane, a selective solvent of the POSS‐containing block. The polymerization system was proven to afford a plethora of O/I nano‐objects, such as spherical micelles, cylindrical micelles, and vesicles depending on the respective molar masses of the PMAiBuPOSS and polystyrene (PS) blocks. The cooling procedure was also proven to be a crucial step to generate particles with a unique morphology. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P2VP) diblock copolymer was functionalized with luminescent chlorotricarbonyl rhenium (I) phenanthroline complex in the presence of silver perchlorate. The copolymer‐metal complex showed high sensitivity to the solvent system. Different morphologies and dimensions of the rhenium complex within nanosized micelles were controlled by changing the solvent systems. Core‐embedded rhenium complex within micelles appear by adding methanol, a poor solvent for the copolymer‐metal complex, to the solution of common solvent tetrahydrofuran (THF); the number of the core‐embedded rhenium complex and the scale of the micelles are strongly related to the addition of methanol. Moreover, a novel morphology of corona‐embedded rhenium complex micelles was prepared by dropping the original THF solution of copolymer‐metal complex into water at a low pH value. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Disulfide‐centered star‐shaped poly(ε‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐l ‐lysine)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers (i.e., A2B4 type Cy‐PZlys‐b‐PEO) were synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization and thiol‐yne chemistry. Their molecular structures and physical properties were characterized in detail by FTIR, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscope. Despite mainly exhibiting an α‐helix conformation, the inner PZlys blocks within copolymers greatly prohibited the crystallinity of the outer PEO blocks and presented a liquid crystal phase transition behavior in solid state. These block copolymers Cy‐PZlys‐b‐PEO self‐assembled into nearly spherical micelles in aqueous solution, which had a hydrophobic disulfide‐centered PZlys core surrounded by a hydrophilic PEO corona. As monitored by means of DLS and TEM, these micelles were progressively reduced to smaller micelles in 10 mM 1,4‐dithiothreitol at 37 °C and finally became ones with a half size, demonstrating a reduction‐sensitivity. Despite a good drug‐loading property, the DOX‐loaded micelles of Cy‐PZlys‐b‐PEO exhibited a reduction‐triggered drug release profile with an improved burst‐release behavior compared with the linear counterpart. Importantly, this work provides a versatile strategy for the synthesis of the disulfide‐centered star‐shaped polypeptide block copolymers potential for intracellular glutathione‐triggered drug delivery systems. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: We report the multiple morphologies and their transformation of polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) in low‐alkanol solvents. In order to improve the solubility of polystyrene block in alcohol solvents, the solution of block copolymer sample was treated at a higher temperature, and then the influence of rate of decreasing temperature on multiple morphologies (including spheres, rods, vesicles, porous vesicles, large compound vesicles, and large compound micelles) was observed. The transformation of spheres to rods, to tyre‐shaped large compound micelles, and to sphere‐shaped large compound micelles was also realized. The formation mechanisms of the multiple morphologies and their transformation are discussed briefly.

Multistimuli‐responsive precise morphological control over self‐assembled polymers is of great importance for applications in nanoscience as drug delivery system. A novel pH, photoresponsive, and cyclodextrin‐responsive block copolymer were developed to investigate the reversible morphological transition from micelles to vesicles. The azobenzene‐containing block copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(2‐(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate‐co‐6‐(4‐phenylazo phenoxy)hexyl methacrylate) [PEO‐b‐P(DEAEMA‐co‐PPHMA)] was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. This system can self‐assemble into vesicles in aqueous solution at pH 8. On adjusting the solution pH to 3, there was a transition from vesicles to micelles. The same behavior, that is, transition from vesicles to micelles was also realizable on addition of β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) to the PEO‐b‐P(DEAEMA‐co‐PPHMA) solution at pH 8. Furthermore, after β‐CD was added, alternating irradiation of the solution with UV and visible light can also induce the reversible micelle‐to‐vesicle transition because of the photoinduced trans‐to‐cis isomerization of azobenzene units. The multistimuli‐responsive precise morphological changes were studied by laser light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and UV–vis spectra. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of self‐assembling polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (PS‐b‐P4VP) diblock‐copolymers and poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) homopolymers were used to fabricate isoporous and nanoporous films. Block copolymers (BCP) self‐assembled into a structure where the minority component forms very uniform cylinders, while homopolymers, resided in the core of the cylinders. Selective removal of the homopolymers by ethanol immersion led to the formation of well‐ordered pores. In films without added homopolymer, just immersion in ethanol and subsequent swelling of the P4VP blocks was found to be sufficient to create pores. Pore sizes were tuned between 10 and 50 nm by simply varying the homopolymer content and the molecular weight of the block‐copolymer. Uniformity was lost when the average pore size exceeded 30 nm because of macrophase separation. However, preparation of films from low MW diblock copolymers showed that it is possible to have excellent pore size control and a high porosity, while retaining a low pore size distribution. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Redox‐responsive core cross‐linked (CCL) micelles of poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(furfuryl methacrylate) (PEO‐b‐PFMA) block copolymers were prepared by the Diels‐Alder click‐type reaction. First, the PEO‐b‐PFMA amphiphilic block copolymer was synthesized by the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The hydrophobic blocks of PFMA were employed to encapsulate the doxorubicin (DOX) drug, and they were cross‐linked using dithiobismaleimidoethane at 60 °C without any catalyst. Under physiological circumstance, the CCL micelles demonstrated the enhanced structural stability of the micelles, whereas dissociation of the micelles took place rapidly through the breaking of disulfide bonds in the cross‐linking linkages under reduction environment. The core‐cross‐linked micelles showed fine spherical distribution with hydrodynamic diameter of 68 ± 2.9  nm. The in vitro drug release profiles presented a slight release of DOX at pH 7.4, while a significant release of DOX was observed at pH 5.0 in the presence of 1,4‐dithiothreitol. MTT assays demonstrated that the block copolymer did not have any practically cytotoxicity against the normal HEK293 cell line while DOX‐loaded CCL micelles exhibited a high antitumor activity towards HepG2 cells. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Double hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐b‐poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PEO‐b‐PNIPAM) block copolymers were synthesized via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, using a PEO‐based chain transfer agent (PEO‐CTA). The molecular structures of the copolymers were designed to be asymmetric with a short PEO block and long PNIPAM blocks. Temperature‐induced aggregation behavior of the block copolymers in dilute aqueous solutions was systematically investigated by a combination of static and dynamic light scattering. The effects of copolymer composition, concentration (Cp), and heating rate on the size, aggregation number, and morphology of the aggregates formed at temperatures above the LCST were studied. In slow heating processes, the aggregates formed by the copolymer having the longest PNIPAM block, were found to have the same morphology (spherical “crew‐cut” micelles) within the full range of Cp. Nevertheless, for the copolymer having the shortest PNIPAM block, the morphology of the aggregates showed a great dependence on Cp. Elongation of the aggregates from spherical to ellipsoidal or even cylindrical was observed. Moreover, vesicles were observed at the highest Cp investigated. Fast heating leads to different characteristics of the aggregates, including lower sizes and aggregation numbers, higher densities, and different morphologies. Thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms were proposed to interpret these observations, including the competition between PNIPAM intrachain collapse and interchain aggregation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
