The radical copolymerization of chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) with 3,3,4,4‐tetrafluoro‐4‐bromobut‐1‐ene (BTFB) initiated by tert‐butylperoxypivalate is presented. The microstructures of the obtained copolymers are determined by means of NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis and show that random copolymers were obtained. A wide range of poly(CTFE‐co‐BTFB) copolymers is synthesized, containing from 17 to 89 mol % of CTFE. In all the cases, CTFE is the less reactive of both comonomers. Td10% values, ranging from 163 up to 359 °C, are dependent on the BTFB content. These variations of thermal property are attributed to the increase in the number of C‐H and C‐Br bonds breakdown when the BTFB molar percentage in the copolymer is higher. Tg values range from 19 to 39 °C and a decreasing trend is observed when increasing the amount of BTFB in the copolymer. This observation arises from the higher flexibility of the copolymer when increasing the number of fluorobrominated lateral chains. These original fluoropolymers bearing reactive pendant bromo groups are suitable candidates for various applications. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The grafting polymerization of styrene initiated by the alkyl chloride groups of poly(CTFE‐alt‐VE) and poly[(CTFE‐alt‐VE)‐co‐(HFP‐alt‐VE] copolymers (where CTFE, HFP, and VE stand for chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), hexafluoropropylene (HFP), and vinyl ether (VE), respectively) followed by the chemical modification of the polystyrene grafts are presented. First, the fluorinated alternating copolymers were produced by radical copolymerization of CTFE (with HFP) and VE. Second, atom transfer radical polymerization enabled the grafting polymerization of styrene in the presence of the poly(CTFE‐alt‐VE)‐macroinitiator using the alkyl chloride group of CTFE as the initiation site. Kinetics of the styrene polymerization indicated that such a grafting had a certain controlled character. For the first time, grafting of polystyrene onto alternating fluorinated copolymers has been achieved. Differential scanning calorimetry thermograms of these graft copolymers exhibited two glass transition temperatures assigned to both amorphous domains of the polymeric fluorobackbone (ranging from ?20 to +56 °C) and the polystyrene grafts (ca. 95 °C). The thermostability of these copolymers increased on grafting. Thermal degradation temperatures at 5% weight loss were ranging from 193 to 305 °C when the polystyrene content varied from 81 to 27%. Third, chloromethylation of the polystyrene grafts followed by the cationization of the chloromethyl dangling groups led to original ammonium‐containing graft copolymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of functionalized fluorocooligomers based on chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) under radical copolymerization is presented. The compositions of comonomers in the cooligomers were determined by three different analyses viz: from 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy by using 1,3‐bis(trifluoromethyl) benzene as the external standard, epoxy equivalent weight value, and elemental analyses. The compositions determined by three methods were matching reasonably well and showed that the resulting poly(CTFE‐co‐AGE) cooligomers exhibit a tendency for alternation. The distribution of the monomers in the cooligomers was proposed based on the assessment of the reactivity ratios, ri, of both comonomers. These values were determined from the kinetics of radical copolymerization of CTFE with AGE from Fineman‐Ross, Kelen‐Tudos, and extended Kelen‐Tudos methods which led to the assessment of the average reactivity ratios as: rCTFE = 0.20 ± 0.03 and rAGE = 0.15 ± 0.08 at 74 °C. The lower Mn values substantiated the formation of cooligomers rather than copolymers. The formation of cooligomers was attributed to the chain transfer to AGE (by hydrogen abstraction from AGE) from the allylic transfer. The poly(CTFE‐co‐AGE) cooligomers were soluble in most of the common organic polar solvents. An optimization of cooligomer yields was investigated by using ethyl vinyl ether as a third comonomer and from different initiators. The thermal stabilities of the cooligomers, obtained by thermal gravimetric analysis, showed a 5% weight loss at temperatures over 225 °C under air. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis and characterization of novel poly(CTFE‐g‐oligoEO) graft copolymers [chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and ethylene oxide (EO)] are presented. First, vinyl ether monomers bearing oligo(EO) were prepared by transetherification of ω‐hydroxyoligo(EO) with ethyl vinyl ether catalyzed by a palladium complex in 70–84% yields. Two vinyl ethers of different molecular weights (three and 10 EO units) were thus obtained. Then, radical copolymerization of the above vinyl ethers with CTFE led to alternating poly(CTFE‐alt‐VE) copolymers that bore oligo(OE) side chains in satisfactory yields (65%). These original poly(CTFE‐g‐oligoEO) graft copolymers were characterized by 1H, 19F, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Their molecular weights reached 19,000 g mol?1, and their thermal properties were investigated while their glass transition temperatures ranged between ?42 and ?36 °C. Their thermogravimetric analyses under air showed decomposition temperatures of 270 °C with 10% weight loss (Td,10%). These novel copolymers are of potential interest as polymer electrolytes in lithium ion batteries, showing room temperature conductivities ranging from 4.49 × 10?7 to 1.45 × 10?6 S cm?1 for unplasticized material. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical co‐ and terpolymerization of perfluoro(4‐methyl‐3,6‐dioxaoct‐7‐ene) sulfonyl fluoride (PFSVE) with 1,1‐difluoroethylene (or vinylidene fluoride, VDF or VF2), hexafluoropropene (HFP), chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), and bromotrifluoroethylene (BrTFE) is presented. Although PFSVE could not homopolymerize under radical initiation, it could be copolymerized in solution under a radical initiator with VDF, while its copolymerizations with HFP or CTFE led to oligomers in low yields. The terpolymerizations of PFSVE with VDF and HFP, with VDF and CTFE, or with VDF and BrTFE also led to original fluorinated terpolymers bearing sulfonyl fluoride side‐groups. The conditions of co‐ and terpolymerization were optimized in terms of the nature and the amount of the radical initiators, of the nature of solvents (fluorinated or nonhalogenated), and of the initial amounts of fluorinated comonomers. The different mol % contents of comonomers in the co‐ and terpolymers were assessed by 19F NMR spectroscopy. A wide range of co‐ and terpolymers containing mol % of PFSVE functional monomer ranging from 10 to 70% was produced. The kinetics of copolymerization of VDF with PFSVE enabled to assess the reactivity ratios of both comonomers: rVDF = 0.57 ± 0.15 and rPFSVE = 0.07 ± 0.04 at 120 °C. The thermal and physicochemical properties were also studied. Moreover, the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of poly(VDF‐co‐PFSVE) copolymers containing different amounts of VDF and PFSVE were determined and the theoretical Tg of poly(PFSVE) homopolymer was deduced. Then, the hydrolysis of the ? SO2F into ? SO3H function was investigated and enabled the synthesis of fluorinated copolymers bearing sulfonic acid functions. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of [1‐(fluoromethyl)vinyl]benzene (or α‐(fluoromethyl)styrene, FMB) and its radical copolymerization with chlorotrifluorethylene (CTFE), initiated by tert‐butyl peroxypivalate (TBPPi) are presented. The allyl monomer [H2C = C(CH2F)C6H5] was obtained by electrophilic fluorodesilylation of trimethyl(2‐phenylprop‐2‐en‐1‐yl)silane in 93% yield. A series of seven copolymerization reactions were carried out starting from initial [CTFE]0/([FMB]0 + [CTFE]0) molar ratios ranging from 19.6 to 90.0 mol %. The molar compositions of the obtained poly(CTFE‐co‐FMB) copolymers were assessed by means of 19F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Statistic copolymers were produced with molar masses ranging between 13,800 and 25,600 g/mol. From the Kelen and Tudos method, the kinetics of the copolymerization led to the determination of the reactivity ratios, ri, of both comonomers (rCTFE = 0.4 ± 0.2 and rFMB = 3.7 ± 1.8 at 74 °C) showing that FMB is more reactive than CTFE as well as other halogenated or nonhalogenated monomers involved in the radical copolymerization with CTFE. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of perfluoro‐3‐methylene‐2,4‐dioxabicyclo[3,3,0] octane (D), its radical homopolymerization, and copolymerization with fluoroolefins are presented. Fluorodioxolane (D) was synthesized through direct fluorination of the corresponding hydrocarbon precursor in a fluorinated solvent by F2/N2 gas. It was polymerized in bulk using perfluorodibenzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The resulting homopolymer had a limited solubility in fluorinated solvents, and its glass transition temperature (Tg) was in the range of 180–190 °C. The polymeric films prepared by casting from hot hexafluorobenzene (HFB) solution were transparent with low refractive index (1.329 at 633 nm). These films were thermally stable (Td > 350 °C), and were hard and brittle. The copolymers of monomer (D) were prepared with fluorovinyl monomers such as chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), perfluoropropyl vinyl ether, perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, and vinylidene fluoride. The kinetics of radical copolymerization of monomer (D) with CTFE led to the assessment of the reactivity ratios of both comonomers: rD = 3.635 and rCTFE = 0.737 at 74 °C, respectively. The copolymers obtained were soluble in HFB and perfluoro‐2‐butyltetrahydrofuran, with Tg in the range of 84–145 °C depending on the copolymer composition. The films of the copolymers were flexible and clear with a low refractive index (1.3350–1.3770 at 532 nm). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 6571–6578, 2009  相似文献

A vinyl ether bearing a carbonate side group (2‐oxo‐1,3‐dioxolan‐4‐yl‐methyl vinyl ether, GCVE) was synthesized and copolymerized with various commercially available fluoroolefins [chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), hexafluoropropylene (HFP), and perfluoromethyl vinyl ether (PMVE)] by radical copolymerization initiated by tert‐butyl peroxypivalate. Although HFP, PMVE, and vinyl ether do not homopolymerize under radical conditions, they copolymerized easily yielding alternating poly(GCVE‐alt‐F‐alkene) copolymers. These alternating structures were confirmed by elemental analysis as well as 1H, 19F, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. All copolymers were obtained in good yield (73–85%), with molecular weights ranging from 3900 to 4600 g mol?1 and polydispersities below 2.0. Their thermogravimetric analyses under air showed decomposition temperatures at 10% weight loss (Td,10%) in the 284–330°C range. The HFP‐based copolymer exhibited a better thermal stability than those based on CTFE and PMVE. The glass transition temperatures were in the 15–65°C range. These original copolymers may find potential interest as polymer electrolytes in lithium ions batteries. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

The radical copolymerization of vinylidene fluoride (VDF) with 4‐bromo‐1,1,2‐trifluorobut‐1‐ene (C4Br) was examined. This bromofluorinated alkene was synthesized in three steps, which started with the addition of bromine to chlorotrifluoroethylene. In contrast to the ethylenation of 1,1‐difluoro‐1,2‐dibromochlorethane, which failed, that of 2‐chloro‐1,1,2‐trifluoro‐1,2‐dibromoethane was optimized and led to 2‐chloro‐1,1,2‐trifluoro‐1,4‐dibromobutane. The kinetics of the copolymerization of VDF with this brominated monomer initiated by t‐butyl peroxypivalate led to an assessment of the reactivity ratios, rVDF = 0.96 ± 0.67 and rC4Br = 0.09 ± 0.63, at 50 °C. The suspension copolymerization was also carried out, and the chemical modifications of the resulting bromo‐containing poly(vinylidene fluoride)s were attempted and consisted mainly of elimination or nucleophilic substitution of the bromine. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Commercial poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) contains allyl chloride and tertiary chloride groups as structural defects. This article reports the use of the active chloride groups from the structural defects of PVC as initiators for the metal‐catalyzed living radical graft copolymerization of PVC. The following monomers were investigated in graft copolymerization experiments: methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, tert‐butyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, methacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile, styrene, 4‐chloro‐styrene, 4‐methyl‐styrene, and isobornylmethacrylate. Cu(0)/bpy, CuCl/bpy, CuBr/bpy, Cu2O/bpy, Cu2S/bpy, and Cu2Se/bpy (where bpy = 2,2′‐bipyridine) were used as catalysts. Living radical polymerizations initiated from 1‐chloro‐3‐methyl‐2‐butene, allyl bromide, and 1,4‐dichloro‐2‐butene as models for the allyl chloride structural defects and from 3‐chloro‐3‐methyl‐pentane and 1,3‐dichloro‐3‐methylbutane as models for the tertiary chloride defects were studied. Graft copolymerization experiments were accessible in solution, in a swollen state, and in bulk. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 39: 1120–1135, 2001  相似文献

New alternating copolymers comprising a chlorotrifluorinated backbone and imidazole‐terminated pendant ethylene oxide groups have been prepared with a view to their use as a component of proton‐conducting membranes in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. A vinyl ether containing an imidazole (Imi) function protected by a benzyl group (BVI) was first synthesized in a three‐step reaction. It was then copolymerized in solution with chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) by conventional radical copolymerization leading to alternating poly(BVI‐alt‐CTFE) copolymers in good yields. Deprotection of the benzyl group under hydrogen produced a chlorotrifluorinated poly(Imi‐alt‐CTFE) copolymer. The polymer was subsequently used to form blend membranes with sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK). The conductivity of blend membranes of poly (Imi‐alt‐CTFE) with sPEEK lies in the range of 4–10 mS cm?1 at 40–70 °C and, for blend membranes rich in poly(Imi‐alt‐CTFE), is little dependent on relative humidity between 30 and 100%. It is surmised that the polymer and membrane composition favor microstructural phase separation into chlorotrifluorinated polymer backbone domains and regions in which imidazole groups are clustered. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers comprising poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) backbone and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) side chains, i.e. P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA were synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes. Direct initiation of the secondary chlorinated site of CTFE units facilitates grafting of PSSA, as revealed by FT‐IR spectroscopy. The successful “grafting from” method and the microphase‐separated structure of the graft copolymer were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) also showed the decrease in the crystallinity of P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) upon graft copolymerization. Composite NF membranes were prepared from P(VDF‐co‐CTFE)‐g‐PSSA as a top layer coated onto P(VDF‐co‐CTFE) ultrafiltration support membrane. Both the rejections and the flux of composite membranes increased with increasing PSSA concentration due to the increase in SO3H groups and membrane hydrophilicity, as supported by contact angle measurement. The rejections of NF membranes containing 47 wt% of PSSA were 83% for Na2SO4 and 28% for NaCl, and the solution flux were 18 and 32 L/m2 hr, respectively, at 0.3 MPa pressure. Aliphatic polycarbonate (PC) copolymer is synthesized by ring opening copolymerization of acrylate‐ and allyl‐functional cyclic carbonate monomers. The post‐polymerization functionalization of the resulting copolymer is performed quantitatively using a variety of thiol compounds via sequential Michael addition and photo‐induced radical thiol‐ene click reactions within relatively short reaction time at ambient temperature. This metal‐free click chemistry methodology affords the synthesis of biocompatible PC copolymer with multifunctional groups. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with N‐chloro amides (N‐chloro N‐ethyl propionamide, N‐chloro benzanilide, N‐chloro methylbenzamide, and N‐chloro acetanilide), lactams (N‐chloro caprolactam and N‐chloro 2‐pyrrolidinone), carbamates or urethanes (N‐chloro ethylcarbamate or N‐chlorourethane), imides (N‐chloro phtalimide, N‐chloro succinimide, trichloroisocyanuric acid, and N‐chloro saccharin) and catalyzed with the self‐regulated catalytic system Cu2S/2,2′‐bipyridine is reported. The initiation efficiency of these initiators is determined by their structure. Regardless of the initiator efficiency, in all cases, poly (methyl methacrylate) with narrow molecular weight distribution and functionalized chain‐ends was obtained. These new classes of initiators open new strategies for the functionalization of polymer chain‐ends and for the synthesis of complex architectures by graft copolymerization initiated from N‐chloro proteins, aliphatic, aromatic and semiaromatic polyamides, and polyurethanes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A membrane or an electrode binder to be used in a solid alkaline fuel cell (SAFC) needs to (i) be insoluble in both aqueous solutions and the required fuels, and (ii) exhibit an hydroxide ion conductivity. To achieve these goals, two pathways were employed: (i) one consists of the radical copolymerization of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) with chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) while (ii) the other one is based on the counter‐ion exchange of a poly(DADMAC) by fluorinated anions. First, the radical copolymerization of CTFE with DADMAC under various experimental conditions was achieved in yields up to 85%, and DADMAC percentages in the copolymers were higher than those in the feed compositions. To obtain insoluble copolymers, high CTFE feed contents (>70 mol %) were required. The other route consisting in the partial replacement of the Cl? counter‐ions in the water‐soluble poly(DADMAC) by bistrifluoromethanesulfonimide (TFSI?) did confer the starting material insolubility in water while maintaining its conductivity. When the fluorinated poly(DADMAC) was obtained from concentrated solutions of fluorinated surfactant, it was observed that the amount of counter‐ions exchanged was difficult to control, which limits optimization. Nevertheless, under diluted conditions, membranes with ion exchange capacity up to 0.7 meq g?1, and conductivities close to 1 mS cm?1 were obtained. Although their conductivities were low, these membranes fulfill the requirements for a SAFC membrane in terms of solubility in DMSO, water insolubility, and thermal stability (Td,10% > 320 °C). When used in a fuel cell, as a binder in the membrane‐electrode assembly (MEA), significant improvements were noted (+50% of the open circuit voltage, +580% in current density, and +540% in accessible power). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Radical copolymerization of N‐phenylmaleimide (PhMI) is carried out with various diene monomers including naturally occurring compounds and the copolymers are efficiently produced by the suppression of Diels–Alder reaction as the competitive side reaction. Diene monomers with an exomethylene moiety and a fixed s‐trans diene structure, such as 3‐methylenecyclopentene and 4‐isopropyl‐1‐methyl‐3‐methylenecyclohexene, exhibit high copolymerization reactivity to produce a high‐molecular‐weight copolymer in a high yield. The copolymerization of sterically hindered noncyclic diene monomers, such as 2,4‐dimethyl‐1,3‐pentadiene and 2,4‐hexadiene, also results in the formation of a high‐molecular‐weight copolymer in a moderate yield. The NMR spectroscopy reveals that the obtained copolymers consist of predominant 1,4‐repeating structures for the corresponding diene unit. The copolymers have excellent thermal stability, that is, an onset temperature of decomposition over 330 °C and a glass transition temperature over 130 °C. The copolymerization reactivity of these diene monomers is discussed based on the results of the DFT calculations. The efficient copolymer formation in competition with Diels–Alder addition is investigated under various conditions of the temperature, solvents, and initiators used for the copolymerization. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical co‐ and terpolymerization of 4‐[(α,β,β‐trifluorovinyl)oxy]bromo benzene (TFVOBB) with 1,1‐difluoroethylene (or vinylidene fluoride, VDF, or VF2), hexafluoropropene (HFP), perfluoromethyl vinyl ether (PMVE), and chlorotrifluroroethylene (CTFE) is presented. Although TFVOBB could be thermocyclodimerized, it could not homopolymerize under radical initiation. TFVOBB could be copolymerized in solution under a radical initiator with VDF or CTFE comonomers, while its copolymerization with HFP or PMVE were unsuccessful. The terpolymerization of TFVOBB with VDF and HFP, or VDF and PMVE, or VDF and CTFE also led to original fluorinated terpolymers bearing bromoaromatic side‐groups. The conditions of co‐ and terpolymerization were optimized in terms of the nature of the radical initiators, and of the nature of solvents (fluorinated or nonhalogenated). Various monomer concentrations in the co‐ and terpolymers were assessed by 19F and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The thermal and physico chemical properties were also studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The block and random copolymerization of a series of amino acid and amino ester functionalized norbornenes by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) induced by the well‐defined molybdenum [Mo(?N‐2,6‐iPr? C6H3)(?CHCMe2)Ph)(OCMe3)2] or ruthenium [Ru(PCy)2Cl2(?CHPh)] based initiators is described. The monomers are derived from the amino acids glycine, alanine, and isoleucine or the methyl esters of these amino acids and either endo‐ or exo‐norborn‐5‐ene‐2,3‐dicarboxylic anhydride. Enantiomerically pure monomers afforded optically active polymers, and the mechanism and kinetics of the copolymerizations are investigated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This is the second part of the article with a subtitle “… The First Synthesis” published by us previously. For this, second part, we have chosen copolymers with low proportion of (‐b‐) units, as well as random copolymers with substantial proportions of (‐b‐) units. This is in contrast to the part I, in which we mostly described alternating copolymerization. In this article, radical copolymerization of tetraethyl vinylidene phosphonate (B) with several vinyl/ethylenic monomers (M2), namely acrylamide, methacrylamide, methyl methacrylate, n‐butyl acrylate, n‐butyl methacrylate, and styrene has been described and reactivity ratios of monomers as well as the average length of the comonomer blocks (n) have been determined (r1 = 0). It has been found, that (as it should be) there is a proportionality between r2 (=km2M2/km2B) and n. Moreover, there is a proportionality between r2 (or n) and the comonomer (M2) “reactivity,” defined as the rate constant of M2 addition to the styrene radical. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐trifluoroethylene‐co‐chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE)) with internal double bond has been reported with high dielectric constant and energy density at room temperature, which is expected to serve as a promising dielectric film in high pulse discharge capacitors. An environmentally friendly one‐pot route, including the controllable hydrogenation via Cu(0) mediated single electron transfer radical chain transfer reaction (SET‐CTR) and dehydrochlorination catalyzed with N‐containing reagent, is successfully developed to synthesize P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE) containing unsaturation. The resultant polymer was carefully characterized with 1H NMR, 19F NMR, and FTIR. The composition of the resultant copolymer is strongly influenced by reaction conditions, including the reaction temperature, catalyst concentration, the types of ligands and solvents. The kinetics data of the chain transfer and elimination reaction demonstrate their well‐controlled feature of the strategy. By shifting the equilibrium between the CTR and elimination reactions dominated by N‐compounds serving as ligands in SET‐CTR and catalyst in the dehydrochlorination of P(VDF‐co‐CTFE), P(VDF‐co‐TrFE‐co‐CTFE) with tunable TrFE and double‐bond content could be synthesized in this one‐pot route. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
