We investigate the two-dimensional eight-states ferromagnetic Potts model in the Voronoi-Delaunay tessellation. In this study, we assume that the coupling factor J varies with the distance r between the first neighbors as , with . The disordered system is simulated applying the single-cluster Monte-Carlo update algorithm and the reweighting technique. We find that this model displays a first-order phase transition if , in agreement with previous recent studies. For and 1.0, a typical second order transition is observed and the critical exponents for magnetization and susceptibility are calculated. Quantum phase transitions in Mott insulators do not fit easily into the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm. A recently proposed alternative to it is the so-called deconfined quantum criticality scenario, providing a new paradigm for quantum phase transitions. In this context it has recently been proposed that a second-order phase transition would occur in a two-dimensional spin 1/2 quantum antiferromagnet in the deep easy-plane limit. A check of this conjecture is important for understanding the phase structure of Mott insulators. To this end we have performed large-scale Monte Carlo simulations on an effective gauge theory for this system, including a Berry-phase term that projects out the S=1/2 sector. The result is a first-order phase transition, thus contradicting the conjecture.

The leading corrections to finite-size scaling predictions for eigenvalues of the quantum Hamiltonian limit of the critical four-state Potts model are calculated analytically from the Bethe ansatz equations for equivalent eigenstates of a modifiedXXZ chain. Scaled gaps are found to behave for large chain lengthL asx+dL+0[(lnL)–1], wherex is the anomalous dimension of the associated primary scaling operator. For the gaps associated with the energy and magnetic operators, the values of the amplitudesd are in agreement with predictions of conformai invariance. The implications of these analytical results for the extrapolation of finite lattice data are discussed. Accurate estimates of x andd are found to be extremely difficult even with data available from large lattices,L500.

We present a Monte Carlo study of various universal amplitude ratios of the two-dimensional q=4 Potts model. We simulated the model close to criticality in both phases taking care to keep the systematic errors, due to finite size effects and logarithmic corrections in the scaling functions, under control. Our results are compatible with those recently obtained using the form-factor approach and with the existing low temperature series for the model.

The three-state Potts model in three dimensions is studied by Monte Carlo and finite-size scaling techniques. Using a histogram method recently proposed by Ferrenberg and Swendsen, the finite-size dependence for the maximum of the specific heat is found to scale with the volume of the system, indicating that the phase transition is of first order. The value of the latent heat per spin and the correlation length at the transition are estimated.

We investigate the influence of aperiodic modulations of the exchange interactions between nearest-neighbour rows on the phase transition of the two-dimensional eight-state Potts model. The systems are studied numerically through intensive Monte-Carlo simulations using the Swendsen-Wang cluster algorithm for different aperiodic sequences. The transition point is located through duality relations, and the critical behaviour is investigated using FSS techniques at criticality. While the pure system exhibits a first-order transition, we show that the deterministic fluctuations resulting from the aperiodic coupling distribution are liable to modify drastically the physical properties in the neighbourhood of the transition point. For strong enough fluctuations of the sequence under consideration, a second-order phase transition is induced. The exponents , and are obtained at the new fixed point and crossover effects are discussed. Surface properties are also studied. We study finite-temperature phase transitions in a two-dimensional boson Hubbard model with zero-point quantum fluctuations via Monte Carlo simulations of a quantum rotor model and construct the corresponding phase diagram. Compressibility shows a thermally activated gapped behavior in the insulating regime. Finite-size scaling of the superfluid stiffness clearly shows the nature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The transition temperature T(c) confirms a scaling relation T(c) proportional, rho(0)(x), with x=1.0. Some evidence of anomalous quantum behavior at low temperatures is presented.

We investigate the short-time critical dynamics of the Baxter-Wu (BW) and n=3 Turban (3TU) models to estimate their global persistence exponent θg. We conclude that this new dynamical exponent can be useful in detecting differences between the critical behavior of these models which are very difficult to obtain in usual simulations. In addition, we estimate again the dynamical exponents of the four-state Potts (FSP) model in order to compare them with results previously obtained for the BW and 3TU models and to decide between two sets of estimates presented in the current literature. We also revisit the short-time dynamics of the 3TU model in order to check if, as already found for the FSP model, the anomalous dimension of the initial magnetization x0 could be equal to zero.

We consider the diagonal-to-diagonal transfer matrix of the four-state self-dual chiral Potts model on a square lattice. We show that there exists a family of models parametrized by a spectral variable u and an auxiliary variable b such that the commutation requirement [T(u,b), T(u′,b)] = 0 needed for the existence of an infinite number of commuting constants of the motion holds. This family is uniformized by the curve x4+y4 = 1 for all values of b except 0, 1 and ∞, where b = 1 corresponds to the critical self-dual model of Fateev and Zamolodchikov.

We reveal a universal spin-flip (SF) transition as a function of temperature in spin-density-wave (SDW) systems. At low temperatures the antiferromagnetic (AFM) polarization is parallel to the applied field and above a critical temperature the AFM polarization flips perpendicular to the field. This transition occurs in any SDW system and may be considered as a qualitative probe of the itinerant character of AFM in a given material. Our SF transition may provide an explanation to the long-standing puzzle of the SF transition observed in chromium and may be at the origin of the equally puzzling SDW-I to SDW-II transition in Bechgaard salts for which we make experimental predictions.

We investigate quantum phase transitions for q-state quantum Potts models (q=2,3,4) on a square lattice and for the Ising model on a honeycomb lattice by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state algorithm with a simplified updating scheme. We extend the universal order parameter to a two-dimensional lattice system, which allows us to explore quantum phase transitions with symmetry-broken order for any translation-invariant quantum lattice system of the symmetry group G. The universal order parameter is zero in the symmetric phase, and it ranges from zero to unity in the symmetry-broken phase. The ground-state fidelity per lattice site is computed, and a pinch point is identified on the fidelity surface near the critical point. The results offer another example highlighting the connection between (i) critical points for a quantum many-body system undergoing a quantum phase-transition and (ii) pinch points on a fidelity surface. In addition, we discuss three quantum coherence measures: the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence, the relative entropy of coherence, and the l1 norm of coherence, which are singular at the critical point, thereby identifying quantum phase transitions.
