Alkali-metal atoms captured on the surface of superfluid helium droplets are excited to high energies (≈3?eV) by means of pulsed lasers, and their laser-induced-fluorescence spectra are recorded. We report on the one-photon excitation of the (n+1)p←ns transition of K, Rb, and Cs (n=4, 5, and 6, respectively) and on the two-photon one-color excitation of the 5d←5s transition of Rb. Gated-photon-counting measurements are consistent with the relaxation rates of the bare atoms, hence consistent with the reasonable expectation that atoms quickly desorb from the droplet and droplet-induced relaxation need not be invoked.  相似文献

Electron impact mass spectra have been recorded for helium nanodroplets containing water clusters. In addition to identification of both H(+)(H(2)O)(n) and (H(2)O)(n)(+) ions in the gas phase, additional peaks are observed which are assigned to He(H(2)O)(n)(+) clusters for up to n=27. No clusters are detected with more than one helium atom attached. The interpretation of these findings is that quenching of (H(2)O)(n)(+) by the surrounding helium can cool the cluster to the point where not only is fragmentation to H(+)(H(2)O)(m) (where m < or = n-1) avoided, but also, in some cases, a helium atom can remain attached to the cluster ion as it escapes into the gas phase. Ab initio calculations suggest that the first step after ionization is the rapid formation of distinct H(3)O(+) and OH units within the (H(2)O)(n)(+) cluster. To explain the formation and survival of He(H(2)O)(n)(+) clusters through to detection, the H(3)O(+) is assumed to be located at the surface of the cluster with a dangling O-H bond to which a single helium atom can attach via a charge-induced dipole interaction. This study suggests that, like H(+)(H(2)O)(n) ions, the preferential location for the positive charge in large (H(2)O)(n)(+) clusters is on the surface rather than as a solvated ion in the interior of the cluster.  相似文献

Helium atoms bind strongly to alkali cations which, when embedded in liquid helium, form so-called snowballs. Calculations suggest that helium atoms in the first solvation layer of these snowballs form rigid structures and that their number (n) is well defined, especially for the lighter alkalis. However, experiments have so far failed to accurately determine values of n. We present high-resolution mass spectra of Na(+)He(n), K(+)He(n), Na(2)(+)He(n) and K(2)(+)He(n), formed by electron ionization of doped helium droplets; the data allow for a critical comparison with several theoretical studies. For sodium and potassium monomers the spectra indicate that the value of n is slightly smaller than calculated. Na(2)(+)He(n) displays two distinct anomalies at n=2 and n=6, in agreement with theory; dissociation energies derived from experiment closely track theoretical values. K(2)(+)He(n) distributions are fairly featureless, which also agrees with predictions.  相似文献

Electron impact ionization of helium nanodroplets containing a dopant, M, can lead to the detection of both M(+) and helium-solvated cations of the type M(+)·He(n) in the gas phase. The observation of helium-doped ions, He(n)M(+), has the potential to provide information on the aftermath of the charge transfer process that leads to ion production from the helium droplet. Here we report on helium attachment to the ions from four common diatomic dopants, M = N(2), O(2), CO, and NO. For experiments carried out with droplets with an average size of 7500 helium atoms, the monomer cations show little tendency to attach and retain helium atoms on their journey out of the droplet. By way of contrast, the corresponding cluster cations, M(n)(+), where n ≥ 2, all show a clear affinity for helium and form He(m)M(n)(+) cluster ions. The stark difference between the monomer and cluster ions is attributed to more effective cooling of the latter in the aftermath of the ionization event.  相似文献

We report the non-desorption of cesium (Cs) atoms on the surface of helium nanodroplets (He(N)) in their 6(2)P(1/2) ((2)Π(1/2)) state upon photo-excitation as well as the immersion of Cs(+) into the He(N) upon photo-ionization via the 6(2)P(1/2) ((2)Π(1/2)) state. Cesium atoms on the surface of helium nanodroplets are excited with a laser to the 6(2)P states. We compare laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra with a desorption-sensitive method (Langmuir-Taylor detection) for different excitation energies. Dispersed fluorescence spectra show a broadening of the emission spectrum only when Cs-He(N) is excited with photon energies close to the atomic D(1)-line, which implies an attractive character of the excited state system (Cs?-He(N)) potential energy curve. The experimental data are compared with a calculation of the potential energy curves of the Cs atom as a function of its distance R from the center of the He(N) in a pseudo-diatomic model. Calculated Franck-Condon factors for emission from the 6(2)P(1/2) ((2)Π(1/2)) to the 6(2)S(1/2) ((2)Σ(1/2)) state help to explain the experimental data. The stability of the Cs?-He(N) system allows to form Cs(+) snowballs in the He(N), where we use the non-desorbing 6(2)P(1/2) ((2)Π(1/2)) state as a springboard for ionization in a two-step ionization scheme. Subsequent immersion of positively charged Cs ions is observed in time-of-flight mass spectra, where masses up to several thousand amu were monitored. Only ionization via the 6(2)P(1/2) ((2)Π(1/2)) state gives rise to a very high yield of immersed Cs(+) in contrast to an ionization scheme via the 6(2)P(3/2) ((2)Π(3/2)) state. When resonant two-photon ionization is applied to cesium dimers on He droplets, Cs(2) (+)-He(N) aggregates are observed in time-of-flight mass spectra.  相似文献

Within the diffusion Monte Carlo approach, we have determined the structure of isotopically pure and mixed helium droplets doped with one magnesium atom. For pure (4)He clusters, our results confirm those of Mella et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 123, 054328 (2005)] that the impurity experiences a transition from a surface to a bulk location as the number of helium atoms in the droplet increases. Contrarily, for pure (3)He clusters Mg resides in the bulk of the droplet due to the smaller surface tension of this isotope. Results for mixed droplets are presented. We have also obtained the absorption spectrum of Mg around the 3s3p?(1)P(1) ← 3s(2)?(1)S(0) transition.  相似文献

The He(n)(+)/He(2)(+) (n ≥ 3) signal ratios in the mass spectra derived from electron impact ionization of pure helium nanodroplets are shown to increase with droplet size, reaching an asymptotic limit at an average droplet size of approximately 50,000 helium atoms. This is explained in terms of a charge hopping model, where on average the positive charge is able to penetrate more deeply into the liquid helium as the droplet size increases. The deeper the point where the charge localizes to form He(2)(+), the greater the likelihood of collisions with the surrounding helium as the ion begins to leave the droplet, thus increasing the probability that helium will be ejected in the form of He(n)(+) (n ≥ 3) cluster ions rather than He(2)(+). The addition of a dopant alters the He(n)(+)/He(2)(+) ratio for small helium droplets, an observation attributed to the potential energy gradient created by the cation-dopant interaction and its effect in drawing the positive charge towards the dopant in the interior of the droplet.  相似文献

Photoionization of He droplets doped with rare gas atoms (Rg=Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) was studied by time-of-flight mass spectrometry, utilizing synchrotron radiation from the Advanced Light Source from 10 to 30 eV. High resolution mass spectra were obtained at selected photon energies, and photoion yield curves were measured for several ion masses (or ranges of ion masses) over a wide range of photon energies. Only indirect ionization of the dopant rare gas atoms was observed, either by excitation or charge transfer from the surrounding He atoms. Significant dopant ionization from excitation transfer was seen at 21.6 eV, the maximum of He 2p 1P absorption band for He droplets, and from charge transfer above 23 eV, the threshold for ionization of pure He droplets. No Ne+ or Ar+ signal from droplet photoionization was observed, but peaks from HenNe+ and HenAr+ were seen that clearly originated from droplets. For droplets doped with Rg=Kr or Xe, both Rg+ and HenRg+ ions were observed. For all rare gases, Rg2+ and HenRgm+ (n,m> or =1) were produced by droplet photoionization. Mechanisms of dopant ionization and subsequent dynamics are discussed.  相似文献

Interactions between the heavier Group 2 metals (Ca, Sr, and Ba) and helium were studied using the well-tempered model core potential method. Accurate pair potentials, calculated at the coupled-cluster level of theory with very large basis sets, were used in bound state calculations. Three bound rovibrational states were found for each complex. The pair-potential parameters were used to predict how each of the metal atoms would be solvated by a helium nanodroplet. The Ca atom is not fully solvated by the droplet and the interaction between the helium and the metal decreases from Ca to Ba. This agrees with the experimental observation that the spectra of these atoms in a nanodroplet are intermediate between the spectra of the free atoms and the spectra in liquid helium.  相似文献

Clusters of para-hydrogen (pH2) and ortho-deuterium (oD2) have been assembled around an OCS chromophore molecule inside He droplets in a molecular beam and studied via IR diode laser depletion spectroscopy (nu approximately 2060 cm-1). The superfluid 4He droplets provide a gentle host ensuring a constant low temperature of either T = 0.38 K for 4He droplets or T = 0.15 K for both the pure 3He and mixed 4He-3He droplets. The spectra show well resolved rotational structure of the vibrational bands for each attached hydrogen molecule in the range n = 1-8. With only one (n = 1) attached pH2, HD or an oD2 molecule the best fit rotational constants were used to determine the structure of the complex, which was found to be in surprisingly good agreement with quantum chemical calculations for the free complex. With n = 5 and 6 the Q-branch disappears for the pH2 clusters but not for the oD2 clusters which is consistent with a donut model. The moments of inertia of the pH2 and the oD2 complexes are explained by a new model in which each of the 18 attached helium atoms in a shell surrounding the OCS molecule are assigned a mass of 0.55, while each attached H2 and D2 molecule has an effective mass of about 10 and 12 u, respectively.  相似文献

The excited state dynamics of silver atoms embedded in helium nanodroplets have been investigated by a variety of spectroscopic techniques. The experiments reveal that 5p 2P1/2 <-- 5s 2S1/2 excitation of embedded silver atoms results almost exclusively in the ejection of silver atoms populating the 2P1/2 state. In contrast, excitation to the 5p 2P3/2 state leads to the ejection of not only silver atoms in the 2P1/2, 2P3/2, and 2D5/2 excited states but also of AgHe and AgHe2. These AgHe exciplexes are mainly formed in the A2Pi1/2 electronic state. In addition, it is found that a considerable fraction of the 2P3/2 excited silver atoms become solvated within the helium droplets, most probably as AgHe2. The observations can be accounted for by a model in which the metastable 2D5/2 state of silver acts as a doorway state in the relaxation of 2P3/2 excited silver atoms.  相似文献

Reactions of the late third-row transition metal cation Au(+) with H(2), D(2), and HD are examined using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry. A flow tube ion source produces Au(+) in its (1)S (5d(10)) electronic ground state level. Corresponding state-specific reaction cross sections for forming AuH(+) and AuD(+) as a function of kinetic energy are obtained and analyzed to give a 0 K bond dissociation energy of D(0)(Au(+)-H) = 2.13 ± 0.11 eV. Quantum chemical calculations at the B3LYP∕HW+∕6-311+G(3p) and B3LYP∕Def2TZVPP levels performed here show good agreement with the experimental bond energy. Theory also provides the electronic structures of these species and the reactive potential energy surfaces. We also compare this third-row transition metal system with previous results for analogous reactions of the first-row and second-row congeners, Cu(+) and Ag(+). We find that Au(+) has a stronger M(+)-H bond, which can be explained by the lanthanide contraction and relativistic effects that alter the relative size of the valence s and d orbitals. Results from reactions with HD provide insight into the reaction mechanism and indicate that ground state Au(+) reacts largely via a direct mechanism, in concordance with the behavior of the lighter group 11 metal ions, but includes more statistical behavior than these metals as well.  相似文献

High resolution IR spectra of aniline, styrene, and 1,1-diphenylethylene cations embedded in superfluid helium nanodroplets have been recorded in the 300-1700 cm(-1) range using a free-electron laser as radiation source. Comparison of the spectra with available gas phase data reveals that the helium environment induces no significant matrix shift nor leads to an observable line broadening of the resonances. In addition, the IR spectra have provided new and improved vibrational transition frequencies for the cations investigated, as well as for neutral aniline and styrene. Indications have been found that the ions desolvate from the droplets after excitation by a non-evaporative process in which they are ejected from the helium droplets. The kinetic energy of the ejected ions is found to be ion specific and to depend only weakly on the excitation energy.  相似文献

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser pulsed field ionization-photoelectron (PFI-PE) spectroscopy has been applied to the study of the sulfur monoxide radical (SO) prepared by using a supersonically cooled radical beam source based on the 193 nm excimer laser photodissociation of SO(2). The vibronic VUV-PFI-PE bands for the photoionization transitions SO(+)(X(2)Π(1∕2); v(+) = 0) ← SO(X(3)Σ(-); v = 0); and SO(+)((2)Π(3∕2); v(+) = 0) ← SO(X(3)Σ(-); v = 0) have been recorded. On the basis of the semiempirical simulation of rotational branch contours observed in these PFI-PE bands, we have obtained highly precise ionization energies (IEs) of 83,034.2 ± 1.7 cm(-1) (10.2949 ± 0.0002 eV) and 83,400.4 ± 1.7 cm(-1) (10.3403 ± 0.0002 eV) for the formation of SO(+)(X(2)Π(1∕2); v(+) = 0) and SO(+)((2)Π(3∕2); v(+) = 0), respectively. The present VUV-PFI-PE measurement has enabled the direct determination of the spin-orbit coupling constant (A(0)) for SO(+)(X(2)Π(1∕2,3∕2)) to be 365.36 ± 0.12 cm(-1). We have also performed high-level ab initio quantum chemical calculations at the coupled-cluster level up to full quadruple excitations and complete basis set (CBS) extrapolation. The zero-point vibrational energy correction, the core-valence electronic correction, the spin-orbit coupling, and the high-level correction are included in the calculation. The IE[SO(+)(X(2)Π(1∕2,3∕2))] and A(0) predictions thus obtained are found to be in remarkable agreement with the experimental determinations.  相似文献

Radiative relaxation of S 2p-excited hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) is investigated by dispersed ultraviolet and visible fluorescence spectroscopies. We observe distinct changes in the fluorescence spectra as a function of excitation energy. Excitation to Rydberg states below the S 2p ionization threshold yields intense fluorescence from neutral and ionic atomic fragments (H, S(+), and S(2+)). In addition to the atomic emission, fluorescence of the molecular fragment ion HS(+) is preferably found after excitation of the S 2p electron into the unoccupied 6a(1) and 3b(2) orbitals with sigma(*) character. This is interpreted as evidence for ultrafast dissociation of the core-excited molecule prior to electronic relaxation. The rotationally resolved fluorescence spectra of the A (3)Pi-->X (3)Sigma(-) transition are analyzed in terms of the fragmentation dynamics leading to the formation of the excited molecular fragment ion, where changes in bond angle are discussed in terms of the rotational population.  相似文献

We present systematic results, based on density functional calculations, for the structure and energetics of 3He and 4He nanodroplets doped with alkaline earth atoms. We predict that alkaline earth atoms from Mg to Ba go to the center of 3He drops, whereas Ca, Sr, and Ba reside in a deep dimple at the surface of 4He drops, and Mg is at their center. For Ca and Sr, the structure of the dimples is shown to be very sensitive to the He-alkaline earth pair potentials used in the calculations. The 5s5p <-- 5s2 transition of strontium atoms attached to helium nanodroplets of either isotope has been probed in absorption experiments. The spectra show that strontium is solvated inside 3He nanodroplets, supporting the calculations. In the light of our findings, we emphasize the relevance of the heavier alkaline earth atoms for analyzing mixed 3He-4He nanodroplets, and in particular, we suggest their use to experimentally probe the 3He-4He interface.  相似文献

Helium droplets spanning a wide size range, N(He) = 10(3)-10(10), were formed in a continuous-nozzle beam expansion at different nozzle temperatures and a constant stagnation pressure of 20 bars. The average sizes of the droplets have been obtained by attenuation of the droplet beam through collisions with argon and helium gases at room temperature. The results obtained are in good agreement with previous measurements in the size range N(He) = 10(5)-10(7). Moreover, the measurements give the average sizes in the previously uncharacterized range of very large droplets of 10(7)-10(10) atoms. The droplet sizes and beam flux increase rapidly at nozzle temperatures below 6 K, which is ascribed to the formation of droplets within the nozzle interior. The mass spectra of the droplet beam upon electron impact ionization have also been obtained. The spectra show a large increase in the intensity of the He(4) (+) signal upon increase of the droplet size, an effect which can be used as a secondary size standard in the droplet size range N(He) = 10(4)-10(9) atoms.  相似文献

In a series of experiments devoted to the study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for astrophysical applications, the S(2)<--S(0) transition of jet-cooled pyrene (C(16)H(10)) at 321 nm has been studied by an absorption technique for the first time. The spectra observed by cavity ring-down spectroscopy closely resemble the excitation spectra obtained earlier by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and show the same band clusters arising from the vibronic interaction of S(2) with S(1). We have also investigated pyrene when it was incorporated into 380 mK cold helium droplets. These spectra which were recorded employing LIF and molecular beam depletion spectroscopy are broadened and redshifted by 0.94 nm but retain the essential features of the gas phase spectra.  相似文献

Vacuum ultraviolet pulsed-field ionization-photoelectron (PFI-PE) spectra of H(2)S have been recorded at PFI-PE resolutions of 0.6-1.0 meV in the energy range of 10-17 eV using high-resolution synchrotron radiation. The PFI-PE spectrum, which covers the formation of the valence electronic states H(2)S(+) (X (2)B(1), A (2)A(1), and B (2)B(2)), is compared to the recent high-resolution He I photoelectron spectra of H(2)S obtained by Baltzer et al. [Chem. Phys. 195, 403 (1995)]. In addition to the overwhelmingly dominated origin vibrational band, the PFI-PE spectrum for H(2)S(+)(X (2)B(1)) is found to exhibit weak vibrational progressions due to excitation of the combination bands in the nu(1) (+) symmetric stretching and nu(2) (+) bending modes. While the ionization energy (IE) for H(2)S(+)(X (2)B(1)) obtained here is in accord with values determined in previously laser PFI-PE measurements, the observation of a new PFI-PE band at 12.642+/-0.001 eV suggests that the IE for H(2)S(+)(A (2)A(1)) may be 0.12 eV lower than that reported in the He I study. The simulation of rotational structures resolved in PFI-PE bands shows that the formation of H(2)S(+)(X (2)B(1)) and H(2)S(+)(A (2)A(1)) from photoionization of H(2)S(X (1)A(1)) is dominated by type-C and type-B transitions, respectively. This observation is consistent with predictions of the multichannel quantum defect theory. The small changes in rotational angular momentum observed are consistent with the dominant atomiclike character of the 2b(1) and 5a(1) molecular orbitals of H(2)S. The PFI-PE measurement has revealed perturbations of the (0, 6, 0) K(+)=3 and (0, 6, 0) K(+)=4 bands of H(2)S(+)(A (2)A(1)). Interpreting that these perturbations arise from Renner-Teller interactions at energies close to the common barriers to linearity of the H(2)S(+) (X (2)B(1) and A (2)A(1)) states, we have deduced a barrier of 23,209 cm(-1) for H(2)S(+)(X (2)B(1)) and 5668 cm(-1) for H(2)S(+)(A (2)A(1)). The barrier of 23 209 cm(-1) for H(2)S(+)(X (2)B(1)) is found to be in excellent agreement with the results of previous studies. The vibrational PFI-PE bands for H(2)S(+)(B (2)B(2)) are broad, indicative of the predissociative nature of this state.  相似文献

A new method is presented for recording excitation spectra of molecules embedded in helium nanodroplets. The method relies on the complete evaporation of the droplets following excitation of a dissolved molecule and the subsequent detection of the remaining unsolvated molecule by mass spectrometry. The technique has been successfully applied to record the S1 1B(2u) <-- S0 1A(1g) transition in benzene. The transition frequencies determined by this new method, beam depletion spectroscopy and REMPI spectroscopy have been found to differ slightly from each other. It is argued that these differences in transition frequency are related to the different droplet sizes probed by the spectroscopic techniques.  相似文献
