A general framework within time-dependent density functional theory is presented for the calculation of excitations to states of arbitrary multiplicity in molecular systems with a non-singlet ground state. The proposed approach combines generalized orbital excitation operators designed to generate excited states which have well-defined multiplicities and the noncollinear formulation of density functional theory and it can be straightforwardly implemented in currently existing density functional programs. 相似文献

Adiabatic time-dependent density functional theory fails for excitations of a heteroatomic molecule composed of two open-shell fragments at large separation. Strong frequency dependence of the exchange-correlation kernel is necessary for both local and charge-transfer excitations. The root of this is the static correlation created by the step in the exact Kohn-Sham ground-state potential between the two fragments. An approximate nonempirical kernel is derived for excited molecular dissociation curves at large separation. Our result is also relevant when the usual local and semilocal approximations are used for the ground-state potential, as static correlation there arises from the coalescence of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied orbital energies as the molecule dissociates. 相似文献

The DFTB method is an approximate KS-DFT scheme with an LCAO representation of the KS orbitals, which can be derived within a variational treatment of an approximate KS energy functional. But it may also be related to cellular Wigner-Seitz methods and to the Harris functional. It is an approximate method, but it avoids any empirical parametrization by calculating the Hamiltonian and overlap matrices out of DFT-derived local orbitals (atomic orbitals, AO's). The method includes ab initio concepts in relating the Kohn-Sham orbitals of the atomic configuration to a minimal basis of the localized atomic valence orbitals of the atoms. Consistent with this approximation, the Hamiltonian matrix elements can strictly be restricted to a two-center representation. Taking advantage of the compensation of the so-called "double counting terms" and the nuclear repulsion energy in the DFT total energy expression, the energy may be approximated as a sum of the occupied KS single-particle energies and a repulsive energy, which can be obtained from DFT calculations in properly chosen reference systems. This relates the method to common standard "tight-binding" (TB) schemes, as they are well-known in solid-state physics. This approach defines the density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) method in its original (non-self-consistent) version. 相似文献

Within the adiabatic approximation, time-dependent density functional theory yields only single excitations. Near states of double excitation character, the exact exchange-correlation kernel has a strong dependence on frequency. We derive the exact frequency-dependent kernel when a double excitation mixes with a single excitation, well separated from the other excitations, in the limit that the electron--electron interaction is weak. Building on this, we construct a nonempirical approximation for the general case, and illustrate our results on a simple model. 相似文献

Corrections to the self-interaction error which is rooted in all standard exchange-correlation functionals in the density functional theory (DFT) have become the object of an increasing interest. After an introduction reminding the origin of the self-interaction error in the DFT formalism, and a brief review of the self-interaction free approximations, we present a simple, yet effective, self-consistent method to correct this error. The model is based on an average density self-interaction correction (ADSIC), where both exchange and Coulomb contributions are screened by a fraction of the electron density. The ansatz on which the method is built makes it particularly appealing, due to its simplicity and its favorable scaling with the size of the system. We have tested the ADSIC approach on one of the classical pathological problem for density functional theory: the direct estimation of the ionization potential from orbital eigenvalues. A large set of different chemical systems, ranging from simple atoms to large fullerenes, has been considered as test cases. Our results show that the ADSIC approach provides good numerical values for all the molecular systems, the agreement with the experimental values increasing, due to its average ansatz, with the size (conjugation) of the systems. 相似文献

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of charge-transfer excitation energies omegaCT are significantly in error when the adiabatic local density approximation (ALDA) is employed for the exchange-correlation kernel fxc. We relate the error to the physical meaning of the orbital energy of the Kohn-Sham lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The LUMO orbital energy in Kohn-Sham DFT--in contrast to the Hartree-Fock model--approximates an excited electron, which is correct for excitations in compact molecules. In CT transitions the energy of the LUMO of the acceptor molecule should instead describe an added electron, i.e., approximate the electron affinity. To obtain a contribution that compensates for the difference, a specific divergence of fxc is required in rigorous TDDFT, and a suitable asymptotically correct form of the kernel fxc(asymp) is proposed. The importance of the asymptotic correction of fxc is demonstrated with the calculation of omegaCT(R) for the prototype diatomic system HeBe at various separations R(He-Be). The TDDFT-ALDA curve omegaCT(R) roughly resembles the benchmark ab initio curve omegaCT CISD(R) of a configuration interaction calculation with single and double excitations in the region R=1-1.5 A, where a sizable He-Be interaction exists, but exhibits the wrong behavior omegaCT(R)相似文献

We apply the adiabatic time-dependent density functional theory to magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra using the real-space, real-time computational method. The standard formulas for the MCD response and its A and B terms are derived from the observables in the time-dependent wave function. We find real-time method is well suited for calculating the overall spectrum, particularly at higher excitation energies where individual excited states are numerous and overlapping. The MCD sum rules are derived and intepreted in the real-time formalism; we find that they are very useful for normalization purposes and assessing the accuracy of the theory. The method is applied to MCD spectrum of C(60) using the adiabatic energy functional from the local density approximation. The theory correctly predicts the signs of the A and B terms for the lowest allowed excitations. However, the magnitudes of the terms only show qualitative agreement with experiment. 相似文献

The collective electronic excitation in planar sodium clusters is studied by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. The formation and development of the resonances in photoabsorption spectra are investigated in terms of the shape and size of the two-dimensional (2D) systems. The nature of these resonances is revealed by the frequency-resolved induced charge densities present on a real-space grid. For long double chains, the excitation is similar to that in long single atomic chains, showing longitudinal modes, end and central transverse modes. However, for 2D planes consisting of (n × n) atoms with n being up to 16, new 2D characteristic modes emerge regardless of the symmetries considered. For in-plane excitations, besides the equivalent end mode, mixed modes with contrary polarity occur. The relation between the frequency of the primary modes and the system size is similar to the case of a 2D electron gas but with a correction due to the realistic atomic structure. For excitations perpendicular to the plane there are corner, side center, bulk center, and circuit modes. Our calculation reveals the importance of dimensionality for plasmon excitation and how it evolves from 1D to 2D. 相似文献

Density functional theory was applied to the investigation of photoinduced electron transfer (ET) and the absorption spectrum for a bis-naphthalimide spermine conjugate. The multichannel feature of ET excitation in this system was focused on because four groups may act as electron donors and acceptors. The segment in this conjugate, N-(N-methylpropyl)-1,8-naphthalimide, which contains one donor and acceptor pair, was studied at first. Through theoretical calculation, the absorption band at 340 nm was assigned to the pi-->pi* transition. For the whole system involving four chromophores, this work suggested three types of ET. From the theoretical investigation, the naphthalimide radical anion turned out to be formed via intramolecular ET between the two terminal naphthalimide groups, rather than via the electron transfer between the dialkylamine moiety and the naphthalimide one. Furthermore, the electronic coupling matrix elements according to the generalized Mulliken-Hush theory were estimated and the detailed analyses showed that the strongest absorption was due to the local excitation of the naphthalimide chromophore. 相似文献

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is implemented within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) using a pseudospectral approach to evaluate two-electron repulsion integrals. The pseudospectral approximation uses a split representation with both spectral basis functions and a physical space grid to achieve a reduction in the scaling behavior of electronic structure methods. We demonstrate here that exceptionally sparse grids may be used in the excitation energy calculation, following earlier work employing the pseudospectral approximation for determining correlation energies in wavefunction-based methods with similar conclusions. The pseudospectral TDA-TDDFT method is shown to be up to ten times faster than a conventional algorithm for hybrid functionals without sacrificing chemical accuracy. 相似文献

Excited state properties of one-dimensional molecular materials are dominated by many-body interactions resulting in strongly bound confined excitons. These effects cannot be neglected or treated as a small perturbation and should be appropriately accounted for by electronic structure methodologies. We use adiabatic time-dependent density functional theory to investigate the electronic structure of one-dimensional organic semiconductors, conjugated polymers. Various commonly used functionals are applied to calculate the lowest singlet and triplet state energies and oscillator strengths of the poly(phenylenevinylene) and ladder-type (poly)(para-phenylene) oligomers. Local density approximations and gradient-corrected functionals cannot describe bound excitonic states due to lack of an effective attractive Coulomb interaction between photoexcited electrons and holes. In contrast, hybrid density functionals, which include long-range nonlocal and nonadiabatic corrections in a form of a fraction of Hartree-Fock exchange, are able to reproduce the excitonic effects. The resulting finite exciton sizes are strongly dependent on the amount of the orbital exchange included in the functional. 相似文献

We apply the long-range correction (LC) scheme for exchange functionals of density functional theory to time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and examine its efficiency in dealing with the serious problems of TDDFT, i.e., the underestimations of Rydberg excitation energies, oscillator strengths, and charge-transfer excitation energies. By calculating vertical excitation energies of typical molecules, it was found that LC-TDDFT gives accurate excitation energies, within an error of 0.5 eV, and reasonable oscillator strengths, while TDDFT employing a pure functional provides 1.5 eV lower excitation energies and two orders of magnitude lower oscillator strengths for the Rydberg excitations. It was also found that LC-TDDFT clearly reproduces the correct asymptotic behavior of the charge-transfer excitation energy of ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene dimer for the long intramolecular distance, unlike a conventional far-nucleus asymptotic correction scheme. It is, therefore, presumed that poor TDDFT results for pure functionals may be due to their lack of a long-range orbital-orbital interaction. 相似文献

The Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) package has been used to constrain Kohn-Sham DFT in such a fashion that a transition from KS-DFT to ligand-field theory in the form of the parametrical d(q)() model is completely well-defined. A relationship is established between the strong-field approximation of the parametrical d(2) model for the tetrahedral complexes VCl(4)(-) and VBr(4)(-) and certain fixed-orbital ADF-computed energies. In this way values for all the parameters of the d(2)() model may be computed, thus allowing the ADF results to be expressed in terms of a KS-DFT energy matrix that can be diagonalized. This means that the KS-DFT deficiency with regard to computation of nondiagonal elements has been overcome and the KS-DFT eigenenergies have become available through the KS-DFT mimicking of the ligand-field plus repulsion model. By using mutually orthogonal strong-field energy matrices, the mimicking has been further elucidated. The computed values for the empirical parameters of VCl(4)(-) and VBr(4)(-) are in good agreement with experimental data. The spectrochemical and the nephelauxetic series have been computed by including the remaining halide complexes and the quantitatively special position of F(-)() among the halides corroborated for both series. 相似文献

Starting from a formally exact density-functional representation of the frequency-dependent linear density response and exploiting the fact that the latter has poles at the true excitation energies, we develop a density-functional method for the calculation of excitation energies. Simple additive corrections to the Kohn-Sham single-particle transition energies are derived whose actual computation only requires the ordinary static Kohn-Sham orbitals and the corresponding eigenvalues. Numerical results are presented for spin-singlet and triplet energies. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

Linear response time-dependent density functional theory is used to study low-lying electronic continuum states of targets that can bind an extra electron. Exact formulas to extract scattering amplitudes from the susceptibility are derived in one dimension. A single-pole approximation for scattering phase shifts in three dimensions is shown to be more accurate than static exchange for singlet electron-He(+) scattering. 相似文献

We present density-functional theory for time-dependent response functions up to and including cubic response. The working expressions are derived from an explicit exponential parametrization of the density operator and the Ehrenfest principle, alternatively, the quasienergy ansatz. While the theory retains the adiabatic approximation, implying that the time-dependency of the functional is obtained only implicitly-through the time dependence of the density itself rather than through the form of the exchange-correlation functionals-it generalizes previous time-dependent implementations in that arbitrary functionals can be chosen for the perturbed densities (energy derivatives or response functions). In particular, general density functionals beyond the local density approximation can be applied, such as hybrid functionals with exchange correlation at the generalized-gradient approximation level and fractional exact Hartree-Fock exchange. With our implementation the response of the density can always be obtained using the stated density functional, or optionally different functionals can be applied for the unperturbed and perturbed densities, even different functionals for different response order. As illustration we explore the use of various combinations of functionals for applications of nonlinear optical hyperpolarizabilities of a few centrosymmetric systems; molecular nitrogen, benzene, and the C(60) fullerene. Considering that vibrational, solvent, and local field factors effects are left out, we find in general that very good experimental agreement can be obtained for the second dynamic hyperpolarizability of these systems. It is shown that a treatment of the response of the density beyond the local density approximation gives a significant effect. The use of different functional combinations are motivated and discussed, and it is concluded that the choice of higher order kernels can be of similar importance as the choice of the potential which governs the Kohn-Sham orbitals. 相似文献
