Finite segments of infinite chains of classical coupled harmonic oscillators are treated as models of thermodynamic systems in contact with a heat bath, i.e., canonical ensembles. The Liouville function for the infinite chain is reduced by integrating over the outside variables to a function N of the variables of theN-particle segment that is the thermodynamic system. The reduced Liouville function N which is calculated from the dynamics of the infinite chain and the statistical knowledge of the coordinates and momenta att = 0, is a time-dependent probability density in the 2N-dimensional phase space of the system. A Gibbs entropy defined in terms of N measures the evolution of knowledge of the system (more accurately, the growth of missing pertinent information) in the sense of information theory. As ¦t ¦ , energy is equipartitioned, the entropy evolves to the value expected from equilibrium statistical mechanics, and N evolves to an equilibrium distribution function. The simple chain exhibits diffusion in coordinate space, i.e., Brownian motion, and the diffusivity is shown to depend only on the initial distribution of momenta (not of coordinates) in the heat bath. The harmonically bound chain, in the limit of weak coupling, serves as an excellent model for the approach to equilibrium of a canonical ensemble of weakly interacting particles.  相似文献

The magnetic moments of the proton drip-line nuclei13O(I = 3/2,T 1/2 = 8.6 ms) and 9C(I = 3/2,T 1/2 = 126 ms) have been determined for the first time through the combined techniques of polarized radioactive nuclear beams and-NMR detection. The observed magnetic moments are ¦(13O)¦ = 1.3891 ±0.0003 N and ¦(9C)¦ = 1.3914 ±0.0005 N. Spin expectation values are deduced to be 0.76 and 1.44 for13O and9C, respectively. While the of13O is consistent with the systematics from isospinT= 1/2 mirror pairs, the of9C is unusually large, even far larger than the single particle value, = 1.  相似文献

We consider translation-invariant attractive spin systems. LetT ,x v be the first time that the average spin inside the hypercube reaches the valuex when the process is started from an invariant measure with density smaller thanx. We obtain sufficient conditions for (1) ¦¦–1 logT ,x v (x) in distribution as ¦¦ , and ¦¦–1 logT ,x v (x) as ¦¦ , where (x):= –lim ¦¦–1 log {(average spin inside ) x. And (2)T ,x v /ET ,x v converges to a unit mean exponential random variable as ¦¦ . Both (1) and (2) are proven under some type of rapid convergence to equilibrium. (1) is also proven without extra conditions for Ising models with ferromagnetic pair interactions evolving according to an attractive reversible dynamics; in this case is a thermodynamic function. We discuss also the case of finite systems with boundary conditions and what can be said about the state of the system at the timeT ,x v .On leave from São Paulo University.  相似文献

A Milnor-Thurston type dynamical zeta function L (Z) is associated with a family of maps of the interval (–1, 1). Changing the direction of time produces a new zeta function L (Z). These zeta functions satisfy a functional equation L (Z) L (Z)= 0(Z) (where amounts to sign changes and, generically,01). The functional equation has non-trivial implications for the analytic properties of L (Z).  相似文献

We give a simplified construction of twist eating configurations, based on a theorem due to Frobenius. These configurations are defined through the equation:U U U + U + =exp(2in /N) withU SU(N), =1 tod andn an antisymmetric matrix with integer entries. In the (Twisted)-Eguchi-Kawai model they yield extrema some of which survive forN. Comparison is made with the Monte Carlo data of the internal energy in the small coupling region.  相似文献

We present some inequalities for the Schattenp-norm of operators on a Hilbert space. It is shown, among other things, that ifA is an operator such that ReAa0, then for any operatorX, AX+XA* p 2aX p . Also, for any two operatorsA andB, AB 2 2 +A*B* 2 2 2AB 2 2 .  相似文献

Results from percolation theory are used to study phase transitions in one-dimensional Ising andq-state Potts models with couplings of the asymptotic formJ x,y const/¦xy¦2. For translation-invariant systems with well-defined lim x x 2 J x =J + (possibly 0 or ) we establish: (1) There is no long-range order at inverse temperatures withJ +1. (2) IfJ +>q, then by sufficiently increasingJ 1 the spontaneous magnetizationM is made positive. (3) In models with 0<J +< the magnetization is discontinuous at the transition point (as originally predicted by Thouless), and obeysM( c )1/( c J +)1/2. (4) For Ising (q=2) models withJ +<, it is noted that the correlation function decays as xy()c()/|xy|2 whenever< c . Points 1–3 are deduced from previous percolation results by utilizing the Fortuin-Kasteleyn representation, which also yields other results of independent interest relating Potts models with different values ofq.  相似文献

Norm inequalities for fractional powers of positive operators   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It is shown that ifA, B andX are operators on a Hilbert space such thatA andB are positive andX belongs to a norm ideal associated with some unitarily invariant norm |·|, then for 0 r 1 we have |A r XB r | |X|1-r |AXB| r . This is an extension of the classical Heinz-Kato inequality which was originally proved for the usual operator norm. Other related inequalities are also discussed.  相似文献

We discuss stochastic Schrödinger operators and Jacobi matrices with wave functions, taking values in l so there are 2l Lyaponov exponents 1...l0 l+1...2l =–1. Our results include the fact that if 1=0 on a set positive measure, thenV is deterministic and one that says that {E|exactly 2j 's are zero} is the essential support of the a.c. spectrum of multiplicity 2j.Research partially supported by USNSF under grant DMS-8416049  相似文献

We describe the generators of-conformal transformations leaving invariant the-deformed d'Alembert equation. For the case D=4 the algebraic structure of the conformal extension of the off-shell spin zero realization of-Poincaré algebra is discussed. Then the D=2 off-shell realization of-conformal algebra for arbitrary spin and its commutation relations are studied.Presented at the 4th Colloquium Quantum Groups and Integrable Systems, Prague, 22–24 June 1995.Supported by KBN grant 2P 302 087 06.  相似文献

The issue of whether the present observational evidence that the mean mass density of the universe is less than the critical density (i.e., <1) implies an infinite future expansion of the universe is discussed. Although in conventional cosmological scenarios <1 necessarily leads to a universe that will grow infinitely old, this conclusion can be avoided in ways which are reasonably natural. One of these is to assume the existence of a small negative cosmological constant. Another way is to postulate the existence of unstable fields with a long time scale for the onset of the instability. An example is a scalar field with a negative squared mass and ¦m¦10–32eV. Other examples include fields for which the instability is generated by quantum corrections in curved space-time. All of these are capable of halting the expansion of an open universe and forcing it to recollapse into a big crunch. This essay received the fourth award from the Gravity Research Foundation for the year 1986—Ed.  相似文献

Consider the system of particles on d where particles are of two types—A andB—and execute simple random walks in continuous time. Particles do not interact with their own type, but when anA-particle meets aB-particle, both disappear, i.e., are annihilated. This system serves as a model for the chemical reactionA+B inert. We analyze the limiting behavior of the densities A (t) and B (t) when the initial state is given by homogeneous Poisson random fields. We prove that for equal initial densities A (0)= B (0) there is a change in behavior fromd4, where A (t)= B (t)C/t d /4, tod4, where A (t)= B (t)C/tast. For unequal initial densities A (0)< B (0), A (t)e cl ind=1, A (t)e Ct/logt ind=2, and A (t)e Ct ind3. The termC depends on the initial densities and changes withd. Techniques are from interacting particle systems. The behavior for this two-particle annihilation process has similarities to those for coalescing random walks (A+AA) and annihilating random walks (A+Ainert). The analysis of the present process is made considerably more difficult by the lack of comparison with an attractive particle system.  相似文献

We abandon as redundant the assumption that there exists something more in the physical world than action quanta, which constitute the atoms of the events of which the four-dimensional world consists. We derive metric, energy, matter, etc., from action and the structure formed by the quanta. In the microworld thequantization of space so introduced implies deviations from conventional metrics that make it possible in particular to explain nonlocality. The uncertainty relations, then, in conjunction with the action-based metric, appear to play an essential role in making direct physical contact between emission and absorption events (i.e., retroactivity) possible, which concretely answers Bohr's conjecture that microprocesses constitute wholes. All of this appears to afford a realistic explanation of wave-particle duality, the EPR and other quantum paradoxes, the hidden variable problem, the collapse of wave packets, and the wave interference mechanism with the ¦ ¦2 rule.  相似文献

A recent analysis by Richard Price of spherical collapse with small nonspherical perturbations is here generalized to the case of an electrically charged collapsing star (0¦Q¦-M). The perturbations are confined to a scalar field generated by a nonspherical distribution of scalar charge in the star. As in the electrically neutral case, the scalar perturbations are probably a prototype for all others — electromagnetic, gravitational, and higherspin. The collapse is shown to produce a Reissner-Nordström black hole, and the scalar-field perturbations are shown to radiate completely away; but they die out more slowly the larger is the star's electric charge. For charge ¦Q¦M, the -pole part of the perturbation at fixedr and late times is dominated by a tail that dies out ast –(2+ 2). But for ¦Q¦=M, the primary outgoing waves emitted from the star's surface are everywhere larger than the tail. At fixedr and late times they die as t–(+2). Also, a calculation of the redshift shows that a collapsing star becomes black more slowly the larger is the star's electric charge.Supported in part by the National Science Foundation (GP-27304, GP-28027, GP-19887).  相似文献

Nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei has been detected for the first time via the destruction of the anisotropy of characteristic Lx-rays. The new method can be applied to isomeric states which decay only via highly converted transitions, for which the standard NMR-ON technique — detection of NMR via the anisotropy of -rays — is not applicable. The X-NMR-ON technique has been used to measure the magnetic hyperfine splitting of193mpt (I=1322+; E=149.8 keV; T1/2= 4.3 d) to be ¦ g NBHF/h¦=111.3 (3) MHz. with the known hyperfine field of –1280(27) kG the magnetic moment of193mpt is deduced to be ¦¦=0.7417(14) N. This magnetic moment differs strongly from the known magnetic moments of the 13/2+ isomeric states in Hg and Pb and195mPt.  相似文献

The charge fluctuations in classical Coulomb systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We study the asymptotic behavior of the charge fluctuations (Q – (Q )2 in infinite classical systems of charged particles, and show, under certain clustering assumptions, that if the charge fluctuations are not extensive, then they are necessarily of the order of the surface ¦¦. Moreover, when the canonical sum rules that are typical for equilibrium states of particles interacting with long-range forces hold true, we prove a central limit theorem for the normalized charge variable ¦¦–1/2((Q – (Q )) in two and three dimensions. In one dimension, the probability distribution of the charge itself converges. The latter case is illustrated by the example of the one-dimensional Coulomb gas.  相似文献

The Dirac spinors and matrices are used in combination with the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formalism in order to obtain yet another formulation of Hamiltonian general relativity, together with a new form of the Gauss-Codazzi equations. The relation with Ashtekar's variables is analyzed; it is shown, for instance, that the matrices are equivalent to the electric field variable. The electric and magnetic decomposition of the gravitational field is also studie using Dirac matrices.  相似文献

We investigate the Finkelstein-Misner geons for a non-simply-connected space-time manifold (M, g 0). We use relations between different Lorentzian structures unequivalent tog 0 and topological properties ofM given by the Morse theory. It implies that to some pieces of geons we have to associate Wheeler's worm-holes. Geons that correspond to time-orientable Lorentz structures are related tog 0 by Morse functions that describe the attaching of a handle of index one. In the case of geons associated to time-nonorientable Lorentzian structures, appropriate handles are related to loops along which the notion of time reverses. If we assume electromagnetic properties of geons, then only four species, v, e, p, m, of different geons can exist and geon m has to decay according to mv+p+e.  相似文献
