Electrolarynxes have been used as one of the rehabilitation methods for laryngectomees. Earlier electrolarynxes could not alter frequency and intensity simultaneously during conversation. Recently, we developed an electrolarynx named “Evada” (prototype so far) using a force sensing resistor (FSR) sensor that can control both frequency and intensity simultaneously during conversation. Employing three types of electrolarynxes (Evada, Servox-inton, Nu-vois), this study was undertaken to examine the functional characteristics of Evada for the normal control group and for laryngectomess. Five laryngectomees and five normal adults were asked to express three sentences (declarative sentence, “You stay here.”, interrogative sentence, “You stay here?”, and imperative sentence, “You! Stay here.”) using three types of electrolarynxes. Frequency and intensity changes between the first and last vowels in the three sentences were calculated and analyzed statistically by paired t test. The frequency changes in the interrogative and imperative sentences were more prominent in Evada than in Servox-inton and Nu-vois. The intensity changes in the interrogative and imperative sentences were also more prominent in Evada than in Servox-inton and Nu-vois. Evada controls frequency and/or intensity by having the subject press the control button(s). Therefore, Evada appears to be better at producing intonation and contrastive stress than Nu-vois and Servox-inton.  相似文献

Vocal performance often requires excessively high vocal demand. In particular “high-risk” performers, a group of individuals who use their voices at their maximum effort level, are often exposed to unique vocal abuse characteristics which include high environmental and performance demands and inconsistencies of cast performance. Three categories of high-risk performers were studied: musical theater, choral ensemble, and street theater. Musical theater performers produce a Broadway, West End “belting” style voice. Street theater performers use a high-energy pitch varying dialogue in order to imitate a desired character voice. Choral ensemble performance requires group cohesion and blending of four-part harmony. The melodies require sustained vocal durations within each of the respective registers. For each of these studied groups vocal tasks of sustained production of /i/ and /a/ were subjected to analysis. Acoustic measures included fundamental frequency, standard deviation of fundamental frequency, jitter percent, shimmer percent, and noise-to-harmonic ratio. Laryngostroboscopic parameters were assessed during sustained /i/. Environmental acoustic sound field measurements were made using an A weighting and linear weighting sound pressure level. These weightings were used to describe noise levels and vocal output, respectively, within the performance environments. Results of the analysis suggest that high-risk performers are a unique performance type defined by distinctive, acoustic, laryngostroboscopic, and environmental characteristics.  相似文献

Some analytical models of quiescent hot electron distributions are extended to the transient conditions, in order to describe the response of hot electrons to step changes in the magnitude of the electric field. These models apply to semiconductors having one or several equivalent energy minima in the conduction band, and isotropic lattice scattering due to low-energy acoustic phonons (elastic in-valley scattering) and to high energy single-level acoustic phonons (inelastic inter-valley scattering) or dispersionless optical phonons (inelastic in-valley scattering). Step changes in the field magnitude are considered with respect to the time and space (one-dimensional) variables, separately. In both cases, the spherically-symmetrical term ƒO of the electron distribution function may be expressed using a Laguerre polynomial expansion in the energy variable. For a positive step change in field magnitude, transient electron drift velocities in excess of the steady-state “scattering-limited” values are found in both silicon and germanium.  相似文献

Variation in duration and frequency during two readings of each of four sentences by 15 normal 9- and 10-year-old children were compared. Instructions to the children included overt cues designed specifically to elicit durational and frequency changes. Children demonstrated increased sentence variability in their voices when they were cued. Specific key words in the four sentences were also analyzed and results indicated that semantic content in addition to parameter-specific cognitive cues provided a significant effect. The male 9 and 10-year-old subjects showed less variability in “no cue” readings than the females, but showed a greater increase in voice change during the “cognitive cue” readings. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.  相似文献

Interest in using ultrasound energy in wound management and intracellular drug delivery has been growing rapidly. Development and treatment optimization of such non-diagnostic applications requires a fundamental understanding of interactions between the acoustic wave and phospholipid membranes, be they cell membranes or liposome bilayers. This work investigates the changes in membrane permeation (leakage mimicking drug release) in vitro during exposure to ultrasound applied in two frequency ranges: “conventional” (1 MHz and 1.6 MHz) therapeutic ultrasound range and low (20 kHz) frequency range. Phospholipids vesicles were used as controllable biological membrane models. The membrane properties were modified by changes in vesicle dimensions and incorporation of poly(ethylene glycol) i.e. PEGylated lipids. Egg phosphatidylcholine vesicles with 5 mol% PEG were prepared with sizes ranging from 100 nm to 1 μm. Leakage was quantified in terms of temporal fluorescence intensity changes observed during carefully controlled ultrasound ON/OFF time intervals. Custom-built transducers operating at frequencies of 1.6 MHz (focused) and 1.0 MHz (unfocused) were used, the Ispta of which were 46.9 W/cm2 and 3.0 W/cm2, respectively. A commercial 20 kHz, point-source, continuous wave transducer with an Ispta of 0.13 W/cm2 was also used for comparative purposes. Whereas complete leakage was obtained for all vesicle sizes at 20 kHz, no leakage was observed for vesicles smaller than 100 nm in diameter at 1.6 or 1.0 MHz. However, introducing leakage at the higher frequencies became feasible when larger (greater than 300 nm) vesicles were used, and the extent of leakage correlated well with vesicle sizes between 100 nm and 1 μm. This observation suggests that physico-chemical membrane properties play a crucial role in ultrasound mediated membrane permeation and that low frequency (tens of kilohertz) ultrasound exposure is more effective in introducing permeability change than the “conventional” (1 MHz) therapeutic one. The experimental data also indicate that the leakage level is controlled by the exposure time. The results of this work might be helpful to optimize acoustic field and membrane parameters for gene or drug delivery. The outcome of this work might also be useful in wound management.  相似文献

The term “compensatory falsetto”, for the purpose of this investigation, refers to the development of an abnormally high-pitched voice in the presence of laryngeal pathology where more socially acceptable lower pitched voice production is possible. The purpose of this investigation was to compare laryngeal compensations and their effects on objective measures of vocal function during production of compensatory falsetto voice. Eighteen patients with abnormally high-pitched voice in the presence of underlying laryngeal pathology were evaluated in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Miami School of Medicine from January 1988 through December 1992 and were diagnosed with “compensatory falsetto”. Vocal fold paralysis (n = 11) was the most common laryngeal pathology. Vibratory characteristics were evaluated through videostrobolaryngoscopic examination. Acoustic and aerodynamic parameters assessed included fundamental frequency, jitter rate, harmonic-to-noise ratio, glottal air flow, and maximum phonation time. Production of a higher-pitched voice appeared to improve glottic closure and decrease the amount of air loss during phonation. A corresponding increase in maximum phonation time and improvement in acoustic characteristics of jitter and harmonic-to-noise ratio was also observed.  相似文献

Growth and optical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals in a glass matrix   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Over the last 15 years nanocrystals embedded in a glass matrix have been a subject for studies of fundamental phenomena of quasiparticles (electrons, holes, excitons, phonons) quantum confinement in the nanosize semiconductor materials. Growth of the nanocrystals in a glass matrix is based on the thermodynamic process of the diffusion-controlled phase decomposition of oversaturated solid solutions. Three stages of the process in solutions prepared by co-melting, co-sputtering and ion-implantation techniques are discussed. It is shown that the growth technique makes it possible to vary the mean size of the particles, their size distribution and crystalline structure.

The optical properties of nanocrystals of various semiconductor compounds grown in different glass matrices are discussed. Attention is given to studies of a fine structure of optical spectra at resonant size-selective spectroscopy for both “strong” and “weak” confinement regimes. Energy spectra of confined acoustic and optical phonons in a “strong” confinement regime, studied by resonant Raman scattering, are discussed.  相似文献

On the basis of propositions of the common fluctuation theory, peculiarities of small fluctuations in real physical systems with limited sizes are analyzed. It is established that small fluctuations should necessarily be divided into two types of fluctuations: “small” and “very small”. It is shown that the damping process of “small” fluctuations has relaxation character, while the damping process of “very small” fluctuations is of random character, i.e., it represents a random rectangular signal. The probability density of “very small” fluctuations is shown to be Gaussian. The agreement of the obtained results with experimental data acquired from semiconductor-based devices is analyzed. A relation between the generation–recombination noise and phonon number fluctuations in semiconductors is studied. On the basis of this consideration it is shown that the Schönfeld pulse spectrum preserves its well-known 1/f form only in the range of intermediate frequencies; at lower frequencies the spectrum gets saturated. An expression for the low-frequency limit of Schönfeld pulse 1/f law is obtained.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of the second interlaboratory calibration experiments, which were carried out in two parts. In the first, five types of commercially available and economically cheap membranes were tested as the barrier against thoron for “radon-only” measurements. It was found that all the membranes tested are good barriers against thoron and can be used in the “radon-only” device. In the second, actual calibration experiments were performed with LR-115 type-II and CR-39 track-etch detectors for different radon measuring configurations in a radon exposure chamber.  相似文献

The slq(2) quantum-group-invariant Heisenberg model with open boundary conditions is investigated by means of the Bethe ansatz. As is well known, quantum groups for q equal to a root of unity possess a finite number of “good” representations with non-zero q-dimension and “bad” ones with vanishing q-dimension. Correspondingly, the state space of an invariant Heisenberg chain decomposes into “good” and “bad” states. A “good” state may be described by a path of only “good” representations. It is shown that the “good” states are given by all “good” Bethe ansatz solutions with roots restricted to the first periodicity strip, i.e. only positive-parity strings (in the language of Takahashi) are allowed. Applying Bethe's string-counting technique completeness of the “good” Bethe states is proven, i.e. the same number of states is found as the number of all restricted paths on the slq(2) Bratteli diagram. It is the first time that a “completeness” proof for an anisotropic quantum-invariant reduced Heisenberg model is performed.  相似文献

Methane activation catalyzed over Ag-exchanged ZSM-5 zeolites was investigated by using the density functional theory (DFT) with a cluster model. Two different pathways were taken into account in this work: the “alkyl” and the “carbenium” pathways. The activation barriers obtained are 34.09 and 66.63 kcal/mol for the “alkyl” and the “carbenium” pathway, respectively. The calculated results show that the activation barrier of the “alkyl” pathway is smaller than that of “carbenium” pathway. Consequently, the “alkyl” pathway is the preferential reaction pathway. A new mechanism of methane conversion in the presence of ethene was proposed. In the catalytic cycle, the initial step of methane activation proceeds with the “alkyl” pathway and the Ag+ cation acts as an acceptor of the methyl group, then ethene reacts with the Ag+CH3 group to form propene. In addition, it is found that the Ag+ cations play an important role in the methane activation, compared with the reaction of methane activation over H-ZSM-5.  相似文献

The effects of surface tension and temperature on the nonlinear dynamics of the dripping faucet were investigated, through the introduction of high-resolution timing, temperature and continuously variable flow rate controls, and the addition of surfactant of the water. The continuously variable flow rate allows the recording of the novel “dripping spectrum” (drop intervals {ti} versus flow rate) over a wide range of flow rate in a single experiment. Lowering the surface tension dramatically changes the dynamics, sharpens the familiar dripping patterns previously found for water, and reveals the existence of novel single and multiple closed-loop patterns. Using dripping spectra, time-delay and time-series representations, the closed-loop patterns are shown to correspond to quasiperiodic states. Lowering the temperature reduces random noise and shifts the occurrence of characteristic patterns to higher flow rates.  相似文献

An important aspect of optical waveguide fiber made of glass is whether it will break under a wide variety of service and manufacturing conditions. This paper covers some of the testing in which stress, length, time, and environment were vaned. The use of Weibull statistics with these data indicates that a statistically predictable behavior exists for populations of glass fibers. Extrapolation from short lengths and short times to very long lengths and very long times must be based on an understanding of the “constants” in the prediction equation. That is, these “constants” can be shown to vary when the three basic parameters cover orders of magnitude in range.  相似文献

Volume selective magnetic resonance (MR) proton spectroscopy was used to investigate the haemopoietic (iliac bone) and fatty bone marrow (tibia) in patients with leukemia and polycythaemia vera. Selective measurements of the relaxation times T1 and T2 for the “water” and “fat” resonances in the bone marrow spectra were performed. Nine patients with acute leukemia and three patients with chronic leukemia were examined at diagnosis. Three patients with acute leukemia in remission were also examined. Five of the leukemic patients had follow-up examinations performed in relation to chemotherapeutic treatment. Nine patients with polycythaemia vera and 21 normal control subjects were examined with identical methods for comparison. All patients had bone marrow biopsies performed prior to every MR examination. Significant differences could be detected in the spectral patterns from iliac bone marrow in patients with leukemia at diagnosis compared to the healthy normal controls. The “relative water content” was increased in the iliac bone marrow spectra of the leukemic patients compared to the normal subjects, which indicates an increase in the amount of haemopoietic tissue and a corresponding decrease in marrow fat content. The T1 relaxation times of the “water” resonance in the spectra from the iliac bone marrow of the leukemic patients were significantly prolonged at diagnosis, compared to the normal controls and the patients with polycythaemia vera. After chemotherapeutic induction of remission, the spectra from the iliac bone marrow in the patients with leukemia resembled normal spectra. Four leukemic patients had abnormal spectra from the tibial bone marrow and one patients showed early changes in tibial marrow during chemotherapeutic treatment, before any major changes could be detected in the iliac bone marrow.  相似文献

Far-infrared spectroscopy of the electronic transitions between bound states of impurities provides a very high resolution technique for studying chemical shifts and thereby identifying residual contaminants. The use of photoconductivity generated within the sample itself, usually by the photothermal mechanism (“photothermal ionisation spectroscopy”), enables very high sensitivity to be achieved even with very thin films or ultrahigh-purity material. The current knowledge about the identity of the residual shallow donors in GaAs, InP, InAs and InSb obtained with this technique is reviewed. With high-purity materials the magneto-optical spectrum of the shallow donors can be particularly rich and more than fifty lines can be observed with both GaAs and InP.

Hydrostatic pressure provides a valuable additional experimental parameter in studies of impurities. Not only does the pressure-induced increase in mass improve the resolution of the “fine structure” due to different chemical species but additional states can be introduced into the forbidden energy gap. Results with both InSb and GaAs have shown that generally donors in direct-gap III-V materials may be expected to have three types of state: the familiar gamma-associated donors, localised states with A1 symmetry which are normally resonant within the conduction band and metastable DX states.

Negatively charged shallow donor states (D- states) and “molecular” combinations where the electrons are shared between two or more donor sites have been studied by infrared spectroscopy of III-V materials. These states are important precursors of the metal-insulator transition.

Recently there have been a number of studies of impurities within quantum wells and heterostructures. The dependence of impurity energy on distance from the well edge has been established and it has been shown that high concentrations of D- states can be formed by remote deping of the structures.  相似文献

We demonstrate an efficient continuous-wave diode-pumped Nd : YLF laser emitting in the red (660.5 and 657 nm) by intracavity frequency doubling with a LBO crystal. We obtained more than 1 W of average power (in two output beams) for 12 W of pump power with a TEM00 mode. This power is to our knowledge the highest obtained with a frequency-doubled Nd : YLF laser emitting in the red. Comparison between “a-cut” and “c-cut” crystals has been carried out in terms of performance and wavelength emission.  相似文献

Acoustic and glottographic measures may provide important information that could enhance clinical management and documentation of vocal dysfunction. Acoustic measures such as jitter and shimmer reflect “short-term” perturbations, or instabilities of the voice, and the coefficients of variation for frequency and for amplitude reflect “long-term” perturbations. Interpretations of these acoustic measures are based on the assumption that vocal perturbations may be related to laryngeal tissue abnormalities, asymmetries in vocal fold movement, or neuromuscular fluctuations in the respiratory, laryngeal, or vocal tract systems. The abduction quotient is a glottographic measure related to laryngeal adduction and is obtained from an analysis of the electroglottograph signal. The adduction measure appears to be independent of the acoustic perturbation measures. Interpretations of the acoustic and adductory measures may, therefore, complement each other for greater understanding of a patient's laryngeal behavior. Visual displays of the acoustic and glottographic signals also are discussed to demonstrate their value in voice signal interpretations. Case studies illustrate potential interpretations of the acoustic perturbation and abduction quotient measures.  相似文献

Polystyrene spheres of the same size (10–100μm) dispersed in ferrofluid produce voids, which have been denoted magnetic holes. A two-dimensional system of interacting magnetic holes confined between two glass plates and subject to rotating magnetic fields in the sample plane are studied in a light microscope. For low frequencies of the field rotation, the holes form pairs, which arrange themselves in a regular triangular lattice when stabilized with a weak constant field normal to the sample plane. By increasing the frequency of the rotating field, we observe that above a critical frequency, the steady forward rotation of the pairs is interrupted by backward rotations in short time intervals. Because the intervals of backward rotation occur at different times for each individual pair, disorder is introduced in the system, and the triangular lattice of pairs “melts” and forms a liquid-like structure at high rotation frequencies of the field. This “melting” transition is observed both directly and in light scattering experiments using a laser.  相似文献
