Schrödinger Operators with A∞$A_{\infty }$ Potentials

We study the heat kernel p(x,y,t) associated to the real Schrödinger operator H=?Δ + V on \(L^{2}(\mathbb {R}^{n})\), n≥1. Our main result is a pointwise upper bound on p when the potential \(V \in A_{\infty }\). In the case that \(V\in RH_{\infty }\), we also prove a lower bound. Additionally, we compute p explicitly when V is a quadratic polynomial.

On Poincaré-Friedrichs Type Inequalities for the Broken Sobolev Space ${\rm W}^{2,1}$

We are concerned with the derivation of Poincaré-Friedrichs type inequalities in the broken Sobolev space $W^{2,1}$($Ω$; $\mathcal{T}_h$) with respect to a geometrically conforming, simplicial triagulation $\mathcal{T}_h$ of a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ , $d$ $∈$ $\mathbb{N}$. Such inequalities are of interest in the numerical analysis of nonconforming finite element discretizations such as ${\rm C}^0$ Discontinuous Galerkin (${\rm C}^0$${\rm DG}$) approximations of minimization problems in the Sobolev space $W^{2,1}$($Ω$), or more generally, in the Banach space $BV^2$($Ω$) of functions of bounded second order total variation. As an application, we consider a ${\rm C}^0$${\rm DG}$ approximation of a minimization problem in$BV^2$($Ω$) which is useful for texture analysis and management in image restoration.     

Mixed A p -A r Inequalities for Classical Singular Integrals and Littlewood–Paley Operators

We prove mixed A _p -A _r inequalities for several basic singular integrals, Littlewood–Paley operators, and the vector-valued maximal function. Our key point is that r can be taken arbitrarily big. Hence, such inequalities are close in spirit to those obtained recently in the works by T. Hytönen and C. Pérez, and M. Lacey. On one hand, the “A _p -A _∞” constant in these works involves two independent suprema. On the other hand, the “A _p -A _r ” constant in our estimates involves a joint supremum, but of a bigger expression. We show in simple examples that both such constants are incomparable. This leads to a natural conjecture that the estimates of both types can be further improved.     

A primal-dual homotopy algorithm for $$\ell _{1}$$-minimization with $$\ell _{\infty }$$ℓ∞-constraints

In this paper we propose a primal-dual homotopy method for \(\ell _1\)-minimization problems with infinity norm constraints in the context of sparse reconstruction. The natural homotopy parameter is the value of the bound for the constraints and we show that there exists a piecewise linear solution path with finitely many break points for the primal problem and a respective piecewise constant path for the dual problem. We show that by solving a small linear program, one can jump to the next primal break point and then, solving another small linear program, a new optimal dual solution is calculated which enables the next such jump in the subsequent iteration. Using a theorem of the alternative, we show that the method never gets stuck and indeed calculates the whole path in a finite number of steps. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. In many cases, our method significantly outperforms commercial LP solvers; this is possible since our approach employs a sequence of considerably simpler auxiliary linear programs that can be solved efficiently with specialized active-set strategies.

Let ${2\leq k\in \mathbb{N}}$ . Recently, Costantini and Zacher obtained a lattice-theoretic characterization of the classes ${\mathfrak{N}^k}$ of finite soluble groups with nilpotent length at most k. It is the aim of this paper to give a lattice-theoretic characterization of the classes ${\mathfrak{N}^{k-1}\mathfrak{A}}$ of finite groups with commutator subgroup in ${\mathfrak{N}^{k-1}}$ ; in addition, our method also yields a new characterization of the classes ${\mathfrak{N}^k}$ .
