Density functional approach is applied to study the phase behavior of symmetric binary Lennard-Jones(12,6) mixtures in pillared slit-like pores. Our focus is in the evaluation of the first-order phase transitions in adsorbed phases and lines delimiting mixed and demixed adsorbed phases. The scenario of phase changes is sensitive to the pore width, to the energy of fluid-solid interaction, the amount, and the length of the pillars. Quantitative trends and qualitative changes of the phase diagrams topology are examined depending on the values of these parameters. The presence of pillars provides additional excluded volume effects, besides the confinement due to the pore walls. The effects of attraction between fluid species and pillars counteract this additional confinement. We have observed that both the increasing surface pillar density and the augmenting strength of fluid-solid interactions can qualitatively change the phase diagrams topology for the model with sufficiently strong trends for demixing. If the length of pillars is sufficiently large comparing to the pore width at low temperatures, we observe additional phase transitions of the first and second order due to the symmetry breaking of the distribution of chain segments and fluid species with respect to the slit-like pore center. Re-entrant symmetry changes and additional critical points then are observed.  相似文献

We investigate bulk and interfacial properties of a recently proposed hard-body model for a ternary mixture of amphiphilic particles, spheres and needles using density functional theory. The simple model amphiphiles are formed by bonding a vanishingly thin needle tail radially to a hard-sphere head group. Such particles provide a natural amphiphile when added to a binary mixture of spheres and needles. As all interactions are hard, we seek to find whether amphiphilic effects can be driven by entropy without the need to invoke attractive interactions. In order to assess the amphiphilic character of the model we first examine the spatial and orientational distribution of the amphiphiles at the free interface between demixed needle-rich and amphiphile-rich fluid phases of the binary amphiphile-needle subsystem. We then consider the free interface between sphere-rich and needle-rich phases upon adding amphiphiles with low concentration to the demixed system. In both cases the orientational distribution of the particles in the interface provides strong evidence that amphiphilic properties can arise purely from geometrical packing effects.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulations for the equation of state and phase behavior of hard spheres confined inside very narrow hard tubes are presented. For pores whose radii are greater than 1.1 hard sphere diameters, a sudden change in the density and the microscopic structure of the fluid is neatly observed, indicating the onset of freezing. In the high-density structure the particles rearrange in such a way that groups of three particles fit in sections across the pore.  相似文献

The dependence of the critical temperature of capillary condensation of an adsorbate in cylindrical pores on the diameter of pores is investigated. The calculation is carried out in the quasi-chemical approximation with a calibration function providing the agreement of results for small pores with exact values obtained by the fragment method. The contribution of the size effect to the calibration function as a function of the diameter of pores is considered in terms of the concept of quasi-one-dimensional behavior of the adsorbate in narrow pores. Various adsorbate-adsorbate potentials are considered.  相似文献

To examine the nature of the adsorption and desorption branches in hysteretic adsorption isotherms of gases on mesoporous materials, we measured the temperature dependence of the adsorption and desorption isotherms of argon, oxygen, and carbon dioxide onto MCM-41 with a pore diameter of 4.4 nm. The results clearly show that in the open-ended cylindrical pores of MCM-41, capillary condensation rather than evaporation takes place near a thermodynamical equilibrium transition, as opposed to the general statement that capillary evaporation can occur via a meniscus formed at the pore mouth, and, thus, takes place at equilibrium.  相似文献

Significant correlations become apparent between synergisms of micelle formation in surfactant mixtures and a series of physico-chemical properties and applications. Examples are emulsifying, dispersing, wetting, flotation, washing and cleaning ability. As a result, the effect of a co-surfactant with respect to problems of application can be predicted by a few surface tension measurements only.  相似文献

We investigate the capillary condensation of two model fluid mixtures in slit-like pores, which exhibit different demixing properties in the bulk phase. The interactions between adsorbate particles are modeled by using Lennard-Jones (12,6) potentials and the adsorbing potentials are of the Lennard-Jones (9,3) type. The calculations are performed for different pore widths and at different concentrations of the bulk gas, by means of density functional theory. We evaluate the capillary phase diagrams and discuss their dependence on the parameters of the model. Our calculations indicate that a binary mixture confined to a slit-like pore may exhibit rich phase behavior.  相似文献

We consider the nucleation process associated with capillary condensation of a vapor in a hydrophobic cylindrical pore (capillary evaporation). The liquid-vapor transition is described within the framework of a simple lattice model. The phase properties are characterized both at the mean-field level and with Monte Carlo simulations. The nucleation process for the liquid to vapor transition is then specifically considered. Using umbrella sampling techniques, we show that nucleation occurs through the condensation of an asymmetric vapor bubble at the pore surface. Even for highly confined systems, good agreement is found with macroscopic considerations based on classical nucleation theory. The results are discussed in the context of recent experimental work on the extrusion of water in hydrophobic pores.  相似文献

The equilibrium distribution of a trace impurity and the self-diffusion coefficients of molecules of the base component and the trace impurity in narrow cylindrical pores were calculated using the lattice-gas model. Two types of lattice structures with six and eight closest neighbors were considered. The sizes of the base component and impurity molecules were taken to be identical. Lateral interactions were taken into account in the quasi-chemical approximation. The equilibrium distributions of the trace impurity across a pore section in the gas and liquid phases of the base component and at the interface for the case of capillary condensation were considered. The probability of existence of isolated dimeric clusters was estimated and the self-diffusion coefficients of the base component and trace impurity for a single-phase distribution of the base component were calculated. The effects of the energy of interaction of impurities with the pore walls and the concentration of the base component on the diffusion mobility of the impurities were analyzed. The concentration dependences of the partition coefficient for the trace impurity between the pore center and the pore wall and the concentration dependences of the self-diffusion coefficients for the trace impurity molecules become nonmonotonic with an increase in the base component concentration. These effects are due to the displacement of the impurity from the near-surface area to the bulk of a pore following an increase in the pore coverage by the base component and to higher mobility of the impurity in the free bulk of the pore. Further filling of the pore bulk reduces the mobility of all molecules. The energetics of intermolecular interactions also plays a certain role. Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. We present a neutron scattering analysis of the density and the static structure factor of confined methanol at various temperatures. Confinement is performed in the cylindrical pores of MCM-41 silicates with pore diameters D=24 and 35 A. A change of the thermal expansivity of confined methanol at low temperature is the signature of a glass transition, which occurs at higher temperature for the smallest pore. This is evidence of a surface induced slowing down of the dynamics of the fluid. The structure factor presents a systematic evolution with the pore diameter, which has been analyzed in terms of excluded volume effects and fluid-matrix cross correlation. Conversely to the case of Van der Waals fluids, it shows that stronger fluid-matrix correlations must be invoked most probably in relation with the H-bonding character of both methanol and silicate surface.  相似文献

A Ginzburg-Landau theory is presented to investigate solvation effects in near-critical polar fluid binary mixtures. Concentration dependence of the dielectric constant gives rise to a shell region around a charged particle within which solvation occurs preferentially. As the critical point is approached, the concentration has a long-range Ornstein-Zernike tail representing strong critical electrostriction. If salt is added, strong coupling arises among the critical fluctuations and the ions. The structure factors of the critical fluctuations and the charge density are calculated and the phase transition behavior is discussed.  相似文献

Brillouin scattering experiments have been carried out on some mixtures of molecular liquids. From the measurement of the hypersonic velocities we have evaluated the adiabatic compressibility as a function of the volume fraction. We show how the quadratic form of the excess compressibility dependence on the solute volume fraction can be derived by simple statistical effects and does not imply any interaction among the components of the system other than excluded volume effects. This idea is supported by the comparison of the experimental results with a well-established prototype model, consisting of a binary mixture of hard spheres with a nonadditive interaction potential. This naive model turns out to be able to produce a very wide spectrum of structural and thermodynamic features depending on values of its parameters. An attempt has made to understand what kind of structural information can be gained through the analysis of the volume fraction dependence of the compressibility.  相似文献

The stability limits in binary fluid mixtures are investigated on the basis of the global phase diagram approach employing a model for the attracting hard-sphere fluid. In addition to the diffusion spinodals the mechanical spinodals are included. As a result one finds topologically different types of the diffusion spinodals while only one shape exists for the mechanical spinodals which are present in the region of liquid-vapor equilibria only. The diffusion spinodals represent the underlying properties of the phase behavior. The types of stable phase behavior therefore resemble that of the spinodal behavior. The different shapes of the spinodals can be important for nonequilibrium processes in nature and technology.  相似文献

The structure of flexible polymers endgrafted in cylindrical pores of diameter D is studied as a function of chain length N and grafting density sigma, assuming good solvent conditions. A phenomenological scaling theory, describing the variation of the linear dimensions of the chains with sigma, is developed and tested by molecular dynamics simulations of a bead-spring model. Different regimes are identified, depending on the ratio of D to the size of a free polymer N(3/5). For D>N(3/5) a crossover occurs for sigma=sigma*=N(-6/5) from the "mushroom" behavior (R(gx)=R(gy)=R(gz)=N(35)) to the behavior of a flat brush (R(gz)=sigma(1/3)N,R(gx)=R(gy)=sigma(-1/12)N(1/2)), until at sigma**=(D/N)3 a crossover to a compressed state of the brush, [R(gz)=D,R(gx)=R(gy)=(N(3)D/4sigma)(1/8)相似文献

In the framework of the Mc Millan-Mayer theory, the enthalpy, volume, and heat capacity coefficients of binary and ternary interactions of amides, alcohols, and acetonitrile in water and nonaqueous solvents were obtained at various temperatures. No pronounced regularities in changes in the coefficients of multiple interactions observed in aquous solutions were found for nonaqueous solutions of the substances studied. None of the considered coefficients can be used as a criterion for solvophobicity. Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 9, pp. 1587–1591, September, 1997.  相似文献

The excess volumes, VE, of some binary 1,2-dichloroethane mixtures have been determined at 30°C. The data have been examined for Cell model theory of Prigogine and Flory's theory. Both theories have been found to fail to fit the results with useful accuracy.  相似文献

Preferential solvation studies of acridine have been investigated using optical absorption technique. The preferential solvation parameter shows that in dimethyl formamide (DMF)+ethanol mixture, the acridine is preferentially solvated by ethanol in DMF rich region and by DMF in ethanol rich region. In the case of DMF+Carbon tetrachloride mixture acridine is preferentially solvated by DMF.  相似文献
