Alkaline hydrolysis of 2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazo[4,5-f] and -[4,5-h]quinolines

2-(Trifluoromethyl)imidazo[4,5-$\text{f}$] and -[4,5-$\text{h}$]quinoline have been prepared from 5(6),acetamido-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzimidazole and 7,8-diaminoquinoline respectively. These (trifluoromethyl)- quinolines like 2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazoles but unlike 2-(trifluoromethyl) benzimidazoles, undergo hydrolysis in dilute sodium hydroxide to give ultimately the corresponding imidazo[4,5-$\text{f}$] and -[4,5-$\text{h}$]- quinoline, respectively.     

Nonclassical thieno[ 3,4-c][1,2,5]thiadiazole

Thieno[3,4-$\text{c}$][1,2,5]thiadiazole was generated by the dehydration of the corresponding sulfoxide $\text{8}$ and characterized by the isolation of its dimer and adducts.     

Electronic spectra of 12-S-CIS conformationally locked retinals

The electronic absorption spectra of the four new 12-$\text{s}$-$\text{cis}$-locked retinals (1a–1d) bearing 7-$\text{trans}$, 11-$\text{trans}$ double bond geometries are described and compared with those of analogous 7-$\text{trans}$, 11-$\text{cis}$-geometries (1e–1h) and parent retinals (2a-h).     

The synthesis of 3-vinylindoles and 11H-5-cyanobenzol[a]carbazole

The synthesis of 3-vinylindoles through Wadsworth Emmons reactions with 3-formyl and 3-acylindoles is described. Although 3-formylindoles react directly with phosphonate derivatives, 3-acylindoles need prior activation by N-sulphonation. 11$\text{H}$-5-Cyanobenzo[$\text{a}$]carbazole has been prepared by the oxidative cycloaddition of $\text{E}$-3-(indol-3′-yl) propenotrile and benzyne.     

Stereocontrolled (E,Z and erythro, threo) synthesis of ⊙-hydroxyallylic sulphides

All four isomers of substituted 3-alkylthio-4-hydroxybutenes have been synthesised: both the geometry of the double bond and the relative stereochemistry of the two chiral centres are controlled.     

[2+2] Cycloaddition of benzyne to cis,trans- and cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene

The relative rates of formation of $\text{cis}$ and $\text{trans}$ [2+2]cycloadducts of benzyne to $\text{cis}$, $\text{trans}$- and $\text{cis}$, $\text{cis}$-1,5-cyclooctadiene, $\text{trans}$- and $\text{cis}$-cyclooctene are discussed and properties of the adducts (e.g., their unusual hydrogenation) are described.     

Boat-chair conformational preference of exo, exo-9-oxobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dicarboxylic acid

The ¹H and ¹³C nmr spectra of $\text{exo}$, $\text{exo}$-9-oxobicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,4-dicarboxylic acid, 3, in DMSO-d₆ or alkaline D₂O, clearly show that it exists in a $\text{boat}$-$\text{chair}$-conformation with $\text{equatorial}$ carboxyl groups, thus being the first case of $\text{boat}$-$\text{chair}$ preference of a bicyclo[3.3.1] nonan-9-one due to the presence of $\text{exo}$,$\text{exo}$-2,4- substituents.     

Novel intramolecular diels-alder reactions with alkynylthio derivatives of 1,2,4-triazines. New routes to thieno[2,3-b]pyridines and thieno[2,3-c]pyridines.

S-Alkylation of 1,2,4-triazine-6-thiones with 4-iodobutyne, followed by oxidation to the sulfoxide and intramolecular cycloaddition (at room temperature),gives 2,3-dihydrothieno[2,3-$\text{c}$]pyridines, which are readily dehydrated with acetic anhydride to thieno[2,3-$\text{c}$]pyridines. The same series of reactions carried out on 1,2,4-triazine-3-thiones leads to thieno[2,3-$\text{b}$]pyridines.
