Six series of new liquid crystalline materials with an azo group (N=N) located in different parts of the mesogenic core of the molecule have been synthesized and their physical properties studied. The chiral segments of these materials are based on alkoxypropionate or alkyllactate units. It has been found that lateral methyl substitution on a phenyl ring in the molecular core disturbs the packing of the molecules. As a result smectic phases disappear and the phase transition temperatures decrease. In addition, shifting the N=N group closer to the chiral centre of the molecule leads to the disappearance of the ferroelectric SmC* phase. For the compounds which show the ferroelectric SmC* phase, the temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarization, the spontaneous tilt angle, the helix pitch length and the complex permittivity has been studied. The effect of shifting the azo group in the molecular core on the physical properties is discussed.  相似文献

Two homologous series of ferroelectric liquid crystalline compounds with 2-alkoxypropanoate chiral unit containing biphenyl benzoate core laterally substituted by fluorine and bromine have been synthesized and studied. All compounds possess the ferroelectric smectic C* phase over a broad temperature range. For bromine-substituted compounds values of spontaneous polarization reach high values up to 250 nC cm-2. The effects of the lateral substitution on the phenyl ring far from the chiral centre by methyl and methoxy groups, fluorine, chlorine and bromine atoms on mesomorphic properties and on values of the spontaneous polarization are discussed.  相似文献

A homologous series of fluoro-substituted chiral liquid crystals derived from (S)-lactic acid and alkoxyethanols were prepared for investigation. Mesophases and their corresponding transition temperatures were identified by polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The compounds exhibit a broad temperature range in the ferroelectric chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase; in particular, compounds with shorter alkyl chain lengths have an SmC* phase at ambient temperature. The physical properties of the ferroelectric SmC* phase, such as switching current, spontaneous polarization, optical tilt angle and electro-optical response, were also measured. The effects of fluoro substituent on the mesophases and physical properties of the chiral liquid crystals are discussed.  相似文献

New chiral liquid crystalline materials containing a keto group and two lactate units attached to the mesogenic core have been synthesized and studied. All the new compounds show the paraelectric SmA, ferroelectric SmC* and antiferroelectric SmC*A phases each over rather broad temperature ranges. The properties of the phases were characterized by DSC, electro-optical and dielectric studies. The spontaneous polarization, tilt angle, helical pitch, and switching times were determined for the polar phases.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals derived from (S)‐2‐(6‐methoxy‐2‐naphthyl)propionic acid, with non‐fluorinated or semi‐perfluorinated alkanes positioned at a chiral terminal chain, have been synthesized and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and electro‐optical measurements. The non‐fluorinated compounds, 1‐hexyl (S)‐2‐{6‐[4‐(4‐alkanoyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy]‐2‐napthyl}propionates exhibit rich mesomorphism—the BPII, N*, TGBA*, SmA* and SmC* phases. The fluorinated compounds display only the SmA* and SmC* phases, suggesting that the fluorination promotes the formation of smectic phases. In addition, the SmA* and SmC* phases of the fluorinated compounds have enhanced thermal stability as compared with the corresponding phases of the non‐fluorinated compounds. The spontaneous polarization (P s values) for the non‐fluorinated compounds are higher than those of the fluorinated compounds at any reduced temperature below the SmA*–SmC* transition. The electro‐optical responses measured for these compounds in the ferroelectric phase displayed thresholdless, V‐shaped switching.  相似文献

Two new series of ferroelectric liquid crystals with a keto group attached to the molecular core and a lactate unit as a chiral centre were synthesized and studied. All the compounds exhibit the paraelectric SmA phase and the ferroelectric SmC * phase over very wide temperature ranges and down to room temperature. The main characteristics of the chiral ferroelectric SmC * phase, namely spontaneous polarization, spontaneous tilt angle, and dielectric constant, have been measured to establish their relationship to the length of the terminal chains. The influence of the chiral and non-chiral chain lengths on the helix pitch length is also discussed.  相似文献

A new series of ferroelectric liquid crystal materials having the methoxy group substituted in an aromatic ring of the mesogenic core has been synthetized and characterized. This electron-donor methoxy group makes the ferroelectric S*c phase narrower in range and monotropic when compared to the series with the unsubstituted molecules, the values of the spontaneous polarization remaining unaffected.  相似文献

Complex dielectric spectroscopy (frequency range 5 Hz–13 MHz) has been used to analyse the frequency, temperature and bias‐field dependences of the molecular dynamics of a very high‐spontaneous‐polarization ferroelectric liquid crystalline material exhibiting SmA, SmC* and unknown SmX smectic phases. Different smectic phase transition temperatures have been observed from the study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric strength and the relaxation frequency. The phase transition temperatures (crystalline to isotropic phases) have also been described very accurately from the temperature‐dependent symmetric and asymmetric shape parameters of the relaxation function and also the dc conductivity. In a planar aligned cell, two symmetric modes (Goldstone mode and domain mode) have been observed in both the SmX and SmC* phases. One asymmetric mode (X‐mode) observed in the SmC* and SmA phases could be related to the interaction of dipoles of the ferroelectric liquid crystals being affected by the surface of the cell. The soft mode, which usually appears very close to the SmC*–SmA phase transition was not observed until the bias field was applied. The second order nature of the SmC*–SmA phase transition was revealed.  相似文献

Banana-shaped achiral compounds, the 1,3-phenylene bis[4-(alkenyloxyphenyliminomethyl)benzoate]s, were synthesized with varying length of the alkenyl group; their ferroelectric properties are described. The smectic mesophases, including a switchable chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and the triangular wave method. The presence of vinyl groups at the ends of the linear side-wings in the banana-shaped achiral molecules, containing a Schiff's base mesogen, induced a decrease in melting temperature and formation of the switchable SmC* phase in the melt. The compound having the octenyloxy group exhibited a spontaneous polarization of 120 nC cm-2 on reversal of an applied electric field.  相似文献

The complex dielectric permittivity has been measured for a ferroelectric liquid crystal in the range 102-109Hz. Six different relaxations have been obtained and characterized: soft mode (SmA* and SmC* phases), Goldstone mode (SmC* phase), rotation around molecular long axis, rotation around molecular short axis, ferroelectric domain mode (SmC* phase) and an internal motion associated with a polar group. Strengths and frequencies of these modes have been obtained for the different phases for different bias fields. Using these results together with spontaneous polarization and molecular tilt measurements we have also obtained the rotational viscosities associated with the soft mode and the Goldstone mode. We explain the results in the light of the so-called Landau extended model, concluding that the biquadratic coupling between polarization and tilt is quite important with regard to the bilinear coupling. This fact has been used to explain the noticeable increase of the activation energy of the frequency of the mode related to the rotation around the molecular long axis at the SmA*-SmC* phase transition.  相似文献

A new series of materials with a chiral fragment derived from lactic acid and a methoxy group as lateral substituent in different positions of the molecular core was synthesised and investigated. Derivatives with ester or ether linkages of the non‐chiral chain were also studied. Depending on the molecular structure, cholesteric, twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA*), chiral smectic A (SmA*) or chiral smectic C (SmC*) phases were detected. In derivatives with the ester linkage and a methoxy group at the nearest and the next nearest phenyl ring to the non‐chiral chain these phases completely disappear. On the other hand, a methoxy group on the phenyl ring close to the chiral chain provides a compound with low layer shrinkage at the SmA*–SmC* phase transition (“de Vries” behaviour). The temperature dependence of the spontaneous polarisation, the tilt angle, the layer spacing as well as the complex permittivity were studied and the results discussed in terms of molecular structure.  相似文献

Several new liquid crystalline materials containing one, two or three chiral centres and having one or two lactate groups in the molecular core have been synthesized. Most of the materials show the blue phase, chiral nematic phase, paraelectric smectic A phase and orthogonal hexatic smectic B phase; some possess the ferroelectric SmC* phase. A study of the mesomorphic properties has been performed using differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The thickness of the smectic layers and the value of the average distance between the long axes of neighbouring molecules were determined. In the SmC* phase, the temperature dependence of spontaneous polarization, spontaneous tilt angle and helical pitch was measured. The influence of the number of lactate groups on mesogenic behaviour has been established.  相似文献

The effects of a second branched alkyl chain, lateral substitution, and double chiral centres on the phase transition and spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal having a 2-methylalkanoyl group have been investigated. The introduction of another branched alkyl chain away from the 2-methylalkanoyl group causes a sharp SC*-SA transition peak and also enhances the ferroelectric properties in the SC* phase. Since the order within the layers is liquid-like in the SC* phase, the alkyl chain branching away from both the chiral centre and a polar group affects the overall motion of the molecule in the SC* phase. In the system of a compound with double chiral centres, the existence of the chiral centre in the 2-methylalkanoyl group affects the phase transition temperatures and the magnitude of the spontaneous polarization in the SC* phase. On the other hand, the existence of the chiral centre in the 2-methylbutyl group only affects the stability of a more highly ordered smectic phase appearing below the SC* phase.  相似文献

Liquid-crystalline compounds with different numbers of lactate units, n, in the chiral part were synthesised and mesomorphic properties studied. Physical properties were compared with respect to n. In the compound with one lactate unit in the chiral part the TGBA–TGBC–SmC* phase sequence was detected. For two lactate units the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase occurs. Finally, three-lactate material exhibits the tilted hexatic SmI*(F*) phase below the ferroelectric SmC* phase. Dielectric spectroscopy and spontaneous tilt and polarisation were measured. For the three-lactate compound the temperature dependences were analysed in the vicinity of the SmC*–hexatic phase transition, and these properties compared with the theoretically predicted behaviour.  相似文献
