The near flow field of an axisymmetric water jet at Reynolds numbers between 2000 and 5000 is investigated using Particle-Tracking Velocimetry. Measurements are taken in the longitudinal section (along the mean flow) and in cross-sections (orthogonal to the mean flow). From the former, correlation coefficients of the two in-plane velocity components in a Lagrangian framework are obtained: thus Lagrangian integral scales can be computed. Those of the streamwise velocity (axial) component increase on moving away from the centreline, whereas the opposite happens for the vertical velocity (radial) component: integral time scales of the two components are almost equal at the interface between jet and ambient fluids. On the other hand, integral scales are almost constant or increase slightly with the axial direction. In cross-sections, fluid ejection and injection from the jet centreline are observed to be connected to counter-rotating vortices (mushroom): their number and size change with Reynolds number in agreement with results from other authors. The maximum ejection velocity (orthogonal to the mean jet flow), at 3 nozzle diameters downstream of the outlet, is found to be one half of the mean outlet velocity.

This paper describes an experimental investigation of the flow past circular cylinders, with the mean flow perpendicular to the cylinder axis, at conditions that yield a strong three-dimensional behaviour. The experiments were carried out in the subcritical regime. Long cylinders with end plates were subjected to shear flow with a linear velocity profile in the spanwise direction generated by means of a curved gauze. It was concluded that spanwise cellular structures of vortex shedding emerged in the wake, more clearly for some boundary conditions than others. These structures are characterised by a portion of spanwise length, a cell, having constant shedding frequency over a time average, which implies that there were no vortex dislocations inside that cell during that time. These features were studied using flow visualisation and hot-film anemometry. Spectra of the local shedding frequency are shown, revealing the effect of the shear parameter (=0.02 and 0.04) and aspect ratio L/D (=20.6 and 8) on the stability and geometry of the cells at several Reynolds numbers in the range of 3.13×103Rem1.25×104.  相似文献

The flow over two square cylinders in staggered arrangement is simulated numerically at a fixed Reynolds number (\(Re =150\)) for different gap spacing between cylinders from 0.1 to 6 times a cylinder side to understand the flow structures. The non-inclined square cylinders are located on a line with a staggered angle of \(45^{\circ }\) to the oncoming velocity vector. All numerical simulations are carried out with a finite-volume code based on a collocated grid arrangement. The effects of vortex shedding on the various features of the flow field are numerically visualized using different flow contours such as \(\lambda _{2}\) criterion, vorticity, pressure and magnitudes of velocity to distinguish the distinctive flow patterns. By changing the gap spacing between cylinders, five different flow regimes are identified and classified as single body, periodic gap flow, aperiodic, modulated periodic and synchronized vortex shedding regimes. This study revealed that the observed multiple frequencies in global forces of the downstream cylinder in the modulated periodic regime are more properly associated with differences in vortex shedding frequencies of individual cylinders than individual shear layers reported in some previous works; particularly, both shear layers from the downstream cylinder often shed vortices at the same multiple frequencies. The maximum Strouhal number for the upstream cylinder is also identified at \({G}^{*}=1\) for aperiodic flow pattern. Furthermore, for most cases studied, the downstream cylinder experiences larger drag force than the upstream cylinder.  相似文献

Vortex shedding from a bluff ring in a linear shear flow has been investigated experimentally. The shedding frequency, measured using a hot wire in various positions within the near wake of the ring, was found to be remarkably insensitive to a mean flow shear parameter, , defined by (d/U o).U/y, where d is the mean ring diameter and U o is the undisturbed upstream velocity on the ring axis; even for = 0.41, corresponding to a velocity variation of about ±24% across the outer ring diameter, the Strouhal number was only about 5% lower than in uniform flow. However, the strong axisymmetric shedding which dominates the flow for = 0 is significantly affected by shear. Indeed, spatial correlation measurements demonstrated that the shedding actually becomes anti-symmetric at the highest values of . The implication of these results is that vortex flowmeters constructed using a ring as the shedding body would be relatively unaffected by changes in the upstream mean flow profile.  相似文献

The effects induced in a coaxial circular channel flow by an axisymmetric turbulent jet are investigated for various values of the velocity and radius ratios 0.16m<1 and 2.5f30.9. The problem is solved by means of an e-L model of turbulence [1, 2]. The calculation scheme differs from the usual one for boundary layers, jets and wakes in that the pressure p is assumed to be unknown and is determined by assigning the boundary conditions for the radial velocity component and the transverse gradient of the longitudinal velocity component on both boundaries. On the basis of the calculations and the experimental data of [3, 4] generalized relations are obtained. These make it possible to estimate the turbulence characteristics of an axisymmetric jet in a confined cocurrent flow when the pressure is variable along the flow.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 14–19, September–October, 1986.In conclusion, the author wishes to thank G. The present paper deals with suppression of vortex induced vibrations (VIV) by introducing radial water jets from circular openings in the wall of the oscillating cylinder. Overpressure within the water-filled cylinder propels water jets blowing out into the ambient flow as a means to alter the vortex shedding process. This flow will introduce a disturbance that is expected to yield reduced VIV amplitudes. Results are presented from experiments in a towing tank testing a spring-supported cylinder with two straight rows of radial water jets along the the cylinder, located at positions +120° and?120° on the cylinder circumference. A smooth cylinder with no openings is tested for comparison. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) have been performed using the Spectral/hp element code Nεκταr. Outflow through openings in the cylinder wall is modeled, and a parameter study is performed where number of jets as well as jet location on the cylinder circumference and jet flow rate are varied.  相似文献

The digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) technique has been used to investigate the flow fields of an elliptic jet in cross flow (EJICF). Two different jet orientations are considered; one with the major axis of the ellipse aligned with the cross flow (henceforth referred to as a low aspect ratio (AR) jet), and the other with the major axis normal to the cross flow (henceforth referred to as a high aspect ratio jet). Results show that the vortex-pairing phenomenon is prevalent in the low aspect ratio jet when the velocity ratio (VR)3, and is absent in the high aspect ratio jet regardless of the velocity ratio. The presence of vortex pairing leads to a substantial increase in the leading-edge peak vorticity compared to the lee-side vorticity, which suggests that vortex pairing may play an important role in the entrainment of ambient fluid into the jet body, at least in the near-field region. In the absence of vortex pairing, both the leading-edge and the lee-side peak vorticity increase monotonically with velocity ratio regardless of the aspect ratio. Moreover, time-averaged velocity fields for both AR=0.5 and AR=2 jets reveal the existence of an unstable focus (UF) downstream of the jet, at least for VR2. The strength and the location of this focus is a function of both the velocity ratio and aspect ratio. In addition, time-averaged vorticity fields show a consistently higher peak-averaged vorticity in the low aspect ratio jet than in the high aspect ratio jet. This behavior could be due to a higher curvature of the vortex filament facing the cross flow in the low aspect ratio jet, which through mutual interaction may lead to higher vortex stretching, and therefore higher peak-averaged vorticity.Nomenclature A nozzle or jet cross-sectional area - AR aspect ratio, defined as the ratio of the nozzle cross-stream dimension to its streamwise dimension, =H/L - D characteristic jet diameter (for circular jet only) - Dh hydraulic diameter, =4A/P - Dmajor major axis of an elliptic nozzle - Dminor minor axis of an elliptic nozzle - H cross-stream dimension of the nozzle - L streamwise dimension of the nozzle - P perimeter of the nozzle - Rej jet Reynolds number, =VjD/ - VR velocity ratio, =Vj/V - Vj mean jet velocity - V mean cross-flow velocity - x downstream distance from jet center - X cross-plane vorticity - kinematic viscosity  相似文献

Density effects on isothermal jet mixing in confined swirling flow are investigated. The experiment is carried out with helium/air as the jet fluid in the same facility as that used by So et al. (1984a, b) and the test conditions are chosen to be the same as before. Contrary to the homogeneous mixing results, the helium jet is preserved up to 40 jet diameters downstream. The behavior of the mean and turbulence field depends highly on the initial jet velocity. Since the jets are fully turbulent and the jet momentum fluxes for inhomogeneous mixing are less than those for homogeneous mixing, the cause of this difference in behavior is directly attributed to the combined action of density difference and swirl. In spite of this, near isotropy of the turbulence field is again observed at 40 jet diameters downstream.  相似文献

The flow structures in the near field of the unducted wake region behind a circular disc for annular flow at low Reynolds numbers were studied by smoke-wire flow visualization technique. A twisted-dual-wire was employed to perform the time evolving visualization. Three typical characteristic flow modes: Q-tip, open-top toroid, and closed toroid, were identified in the near disc region. For Reynolds number between 130 and 390, the Q-tip flow mode which subject to a periodic up-down oscillatory motion was observed. The open-top toroid mode which experiences the expelling vortex shedding was found for Reynolds number between 390 and 455. The free separation surface turns around and merges to the central axisymmetric axis to form the conventionally observed toroidal recirculation bubble for Reynolds number higher than 455. The closed toroid mode exhibits both expelling and shear-layer vortex sheddings. With the identified flow modes at low Reynolds numbers, the recirculation contours, recirculation length, and the shedding frequency in each mode were measured and discussed.List of symbols B.R. blockage ratio (=D 2 /D a 2 ) - D a outer diameter of annular jet, 30 mm - D diameter of circular disc, 20 mm - f frequency of vortex shedding, Hz - L r axial length of recirculation zone - R radius of circular disc, 10 mm - u a average exit velocity of annular jet - 0 stream function with value of zero - mass density of annular flow - u average axial velocity - r radial coordinate, originated from center of circular disk - r 0 radial coordinate of the boundary of the recirculation zone - Re a Reynolds number of annular jet based on the disc diameter - Z axial coordinate, originated from center of circular disk - w max maximum half-width of the recirculation zone - St Strouhal number (=fD/D a )  相似文献

Time-variant data are obtained to investigate the exit flow field from a rotor in a research compressor. In the free-stream region, the instantaneous data are analogous to one another and to the ensemble averaged free-stream results. However, in the wake region, some of the instantaneous signals are similar to one another and to the ensemble averaged wake, but others differ significantly. These variations in the instantaneous data are interpreted and shown to be due to a vortex street structure in the wake. This is accomplished by: (1) developing a mathematical model of the rotor blade exit flow field based on a wake vortex street structure analogous to the unsteady flow field behind bluff bodies due to classical von Karman vortex shedding; and (2) correlating predictions of both the ensemble averaged and instantaneous rotor blade exit flow fields as well as the velocity probability density distributions from this vortex wake flow field model with the corresponding data. The correlation of the ensemble averaged rotor blade exit flow fields is very good and the flow angle distribution correlation excellent. The predicted instantaneous rotor blade exit flow field exhibits many of the flow features found in the data. Also, the probability density distributions for the data and the vortex wake flow field model are analogous to one another.List of symbols N number of rotor revolutions - S w rotor blade wake width - S x vortex core horizontal spacing - S y vortex core vertical spacing - u velocity component parallel to vortex street motion - v velocity component normal to vortex street motion - W instantaneous relative velocity - W i velocity induced by vortex street - W free-stream relative velocity - W s velocity of vortex street - x coordinate parallel to vortex street motion - y coordinate normal to vortex street motion - free-stream relative flow angle - inst instantaneous relative flow angle - vortex strength  相似文献

The effect of feedback control on vortex shedding from two tandem cylinders in cross-flow is investigated experimentally. The objective is to reduce the downstream cylinder response to vortex shedding and turbulence excitations. Feedback control is applied to a resonant case, where the frequency of vortex shedding coincides with the resonance frequency of the downstream cylinder, and to a nonresonant case, in which the shedding frequency is about 30% higher than the downstream cylinder resonance frequency. A “synthetic jet” issuing through a narrow slit on the upstream cylinder is employed to impart the control effect to the flow. The effect of open-loop control, using pure tones and white noise to activate the synthetic jet, is also examined. It is demonstrated that feedback control can significantly reduce the downstream cylinder response to both vortex shedding and turbulence excitations. For example, the cylinder response is reduced by up to 70% in the resonant case and 75% in the nonresonant case. Open-loop control also can reduce the cylinder response, but is less effective than feedback control. The frequency of vortex shedding is found to increase substantially when white noise is applied. This increase in the shedding frequency is higher than the largest frequency shift that could be produced by open-loop tone excitation.  相似文献

The flow behavior in the up- and downstream regions of a square cylinder subject to the modulation of a planar jet issued from the cylinder׳s front surface was studied using the laser-assisted smoke flow visualization method and hot-wire anemometer measurement. Reynolds numbers were from 1628 to 13 000. The drag force experienced by the square cylinder was obtained by measuring the surface pressures on the up- and downstream faces. The temporally evolving smoke flow patterns in the up- and downstream regions were synchronously revealed through the smoke flow visualization. The frequency characteristics of the instability waves in the up- and downstream regions were synchronously detected by the two hot-wire anemometers. Four characteristic flow modes were observed within the different ranges of the injection ratios. At the low injection ratios (IR<1), the ‘swinging jet’ appeared. The jet swung periodically leftward and rightward and formed a fluid bubble on the front surface. The fluid bubble contained a pair of counter-rotating vortices and presented a periodic variation in its height. At moderately low injection ratios (1<IR<4.3), the ‘deflected oscillating jet’ appeared. The jet was deflected in either the left or the right direction and wrapped around one of the edges of the square cylinder. Both the swinging and oscillating motions of the jet in the swinging jet and deflected oscillating jet modes were induced by the periodic feedback pressure signals generated by the vortex shedding in the wake. At the moderately high (4.3<IR<8.3) and high (IR>8.3) injection ratios, the ‘deflection jet’ and ‘penetrating jet’ appeared. The jet detached from the cylinder׳s front surface and penetrated a long distance into the upstream region due to large jet momentum. Neither periodic jet oscillation in the upstream region nor vortex shedding in the wake was observed. The drag coefficient was found to be decreasing quickly with increasing the injection ratio.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to examine the mechanisms which produce the large entrainment measured near the exit of thermal plasma torches. A research facility was constructed to examine low density jet behavior under similar dimensionless conditions as those produced by thermal plasma spray torches; the Reynolds number based on jet diameter and average properties was 1000, and the ratio of jet to ambient density was 0.07. This very low density jet produced organized vortex structures which were partially responsible for the rapid entrainment of external air. The formation of these organized structures could be disrupted by introducing turbulence, but the rapid entrainment process was not significantly affected. The structure of the jet produced by a commercial plasma torch was examined and compared to the low density research jet. At low gas flow rates the plasma jet also displayed the formation of coherent vortex structures, the passage frequency of which compared favorably with that measured in the low density research jet. At higher gas flow rates the shear layer of the plasma jet rapidly broke down producing relatively small scale turbulence. Visualizations of the hot plasma core were compared against measurements of the torch voltage fluctuations caused by arc instabilities. At low flow rates the arc voltage fluctuations were quite low and the plume was very steady. At higher flow rates the arc voltage fluctuations increased and produced surging and whipping in the hot potential core. It is believed that this low frequency unsteadiness is partially responsible for the rapid entrainment measured in plasma torches. The authors would like to thank Dr. Ron Spores for the extensive use of his data and Mr. Stuart Malmberg for help with the plasma core visualizations. Feedback control of vortex shedding from a circular cylinder in a uniform flow at moderate Reynolds numbers is studied experimentally with the cylinder subjected to feedback cylinder oscillations in cross-flow direction. The cylinder oscillation is digitally phase shifted with respect to the shedding vortex and is controlled by velocity feedback from the shear layer of the cylinder wake. Possible attenuation of vortex shedding is demonstrated by hot-wire measurements of the flow field and its mechanisms are studied by simultaneous data sampling and flow visualization with the smoke wire method and a laser-sheet illumination technique. Measurement results reveal substantial reduction in the fluctuating reference velocity at the optimum phase control. Flow visualization study indicates that the shear layer roll-up and the eventual vortex formation are dynamically attenuated under the control which results in a modification of the near wake.List of symbols A amplitude of cylinder oscillation - D cylinder diameter - E u power spectrum function for fluctuating velocity u - frequency - R radius of circular cylinder - t time - u streamwise mean velocity - u streamwise fluctuating velocity - U streamwise mean velocity of main flow - u r mean reference velocity - u r fluctuating reference velocity - u rf fluctuating reference velocity after filtering - y c cylinder displacement - x, y, z coordinates from the cylinder center (Fig. 1) - feedback coefficient - phase lag The authors would like to express thanks to Professor K. The qualitative and quantitative behaviour of double row vortical structures in the near field region of a plane wall jet are studied experimentally by flow visualization and hot-wire measurements. Ensemble averaging is employed to investigate the interaction of vortices with the wall. In the flow visualization study, a double row vortical structure, which includes a primary vortex formed in the outer layer region and a secondary vortex induced in the inner layer region, and the vortex lift-off phenomenon are clearly observed during the development of the wall jet. The phase averaged results of the velocity measurements show that the instability leading to induction of the secondary vortex is stimulated by the primary vortex. In the early stage of wall jet transition, the inflection point of the inner layer velocity profile moves transversely from the wall surface to the inner layer region due to passage of the well-organized primary vortex in the outer layer region. The inner layer instability is thus induced and the instability wave rolls up to form the secondary vortex. Furthermore, the secondary vortex will convect downstream faster than the primary vortex, and this difference in convective speed will lead to the subsequent phenomenon of vortex lift-off from the wall surface.List of symbols A1, A2, . . . primary vortex - B1,B2, . . . secondary vortex - fe forcing frequency - f fundamental frequency - H nozzle exit height - Re Reynolds number,U j H/ - T period of the referred signal (=13.5 ms) - t, t time scale - U streamwise mean velocity - U c convection speed - U j jet exit velocity - U m local maximum velocity - ut' streamwise turbulence intensity - uv turbulent shear stress - V transverse mean velocity - v transverse turbulence intensity - X streamwise coordinate - Y transverse coordinate - X Ai streamwise location of vortexAi - X Bi streamwise location of vortexBi - X ave averaged streamwise location of the vortex - Y m wall jet inner layer width, the distance from wall to whereU=U m - Y 1/2 wall jet half-width, the distance from wall to whereU=1/2U m in outer layer region - t time interval (=0.267 s) - phase averaged value  相似文献

This paper reports an experimental investigation on the wake of a blunt-based, flat plate subjected to aerodynamic flow vectoring using asymmetric synthetic jet actuation. Wake vectoring was achieved using a synthetic jet placed at the model base 2.5?mm from the upper corner. The wake Reynolds number based on the plate thickness was 7,200. The synthetic jet actuation frequency was selected to be about 75?% the vortex shedding frequency of the natural wake. At this actuation frequency, the synthetic jet delivered a periodic flow with a momentum coefficient, C ??, of up to 62?%. Simultaneous measurements of the streamwise and transverse components of the velocity were performed using particle image velocimetry (PIV) in the near wake. The results suggested that for significant wake vectoring, vortex shedding must be suppressed first. Under the flow conditions cited above, C ?? values in the range of 10?C20?% were required. The wake vectoring angle seemed to asymptote to a constant value of about 30° at downstream distances, x/h, larger than 4 for C ?? values ranging between 24 and 64?%. The phase-averaged vorticity contours and the phase-averaged normal lift force showed that most of the wake vectoring is produced during the suction phase of the actuation, while the blowing phase was mostly responsible for vortex shedding suppression.  相似文献

The velocity field of a circular water jet impinging onto a flat plate has been measured using particle image velocimetry, or PIV. The velocity field has been recorded at several instants in time, producing thousands of simultaneous two-dimensional velocity measurements for each realization. The instantaneous velocity, vorticity and rate-of-strain fields reveal the interaction of vortices near the impinging wall within the radial wall jet downstream from the stagnation point. An ensemble average of the instantaneous fields produces a mean velocity field of the jet flow, which reveals many of the processes leading to boundary layer separation and vortex breakaway within the wall jet. The PIV system extracts the velocity measurements using a two-dimensional autocorrelation method, and can obtain thousands of highly accurate velocity measurements within a few minutes. The structure found in these experiments may be similar to the ground level structure of atmospheric microburst phenomena.A version of this paper was presented at the 11th Symposium on Turbulence, University of Missouri-Rolla, 17–19 October 1988  相似文献
