At present there is significant interest in the development of small scale medical diagnostic equipment. These devices offer faster processing times and require smaller sample volumes than equivalent macro scale systems. Although significant attention has been focused upon their outputs, little attention has been devoted to the detailed fluid mechanics that govern the flow mechanisms within these devices. Conventionally, the samples in these small scale devices are segmented into distinct discrete droplets or slugs which are suspended in an organic carrier phase. Separating these slugs from the channel wall is a very thin film of the organic carrier phase. The magnitude of this film is the focus of the present study and the effects of sample slug length and carrier phase fluidic properties on the film are examined over a range of Capillary numbers. A non-intrusive optical technique was used to capture images of the flow from which the magnitude of the film was determined. The experimental results show that the film is not constant along the length of the slug; however above a threshold value for slug length, a region of constant film thickness exists. When compared with existing correlations in the literature, the experimental data showed reasonable agreement with the Bretherton model when the Capillary number was calculated based on the mean two phase flow velocity. However, significant differences were observed when the Capillary number was redefined to account for the mean velocity at the liquid interface, i.e., the mean slug velocity.Analysis of the experimental data revealed that it fell into two distinct flow regimes; a visco-capillary regime and a visco-inertial regime. A modified Taylor expression is presented to estimate the magnitude of the film for flows in the visco-capillary regime while a new model is put forward, based on Capillary and Weber numbers, for flows in the visco-inertial regime. Overall, this study provides some novel insights into parameters, such as aqueous slug length and carrier phase fluidic properties, that affect the thickness of the film in liquid–liquid slug flow regimes.  相似文献

The behavior of glycerin–water jets flowing into immiscible ambients of Dow Corning 200 fluid was investigated using laser induced fluorescence (LIF). Undistorted images were obtained by matching the index of refraction of the fluids. A sinusoidal perturbation was superposed on the flow to phase lock the drop formation. The forcing frequency dramatically affected the size, spacing, and number of drops that formed within a forcing cycle and the angle between drops and the jet interface just before pinch-off. Two fluid combinations were studied with similar density ratios, but viscosity ratios differing by a factor of 20. The viscosity ratio affected the jet stability as well as pinch-off angles and drop size. Received: 28 January 1999/Accepted: 20 January 2000  相似文献

This paper documents the numerical investigation of the effects of non-uniform magnetic fields, i.e. magnetic-ribs, on a liquid–metal flowing through a two-dimensional channel. The magnetic ribs are physically represented by electric currents flowing underneath the channel walls. The Lorentz forces generated by the magnetic ribs alter the flow field and, as consequence, the convective heat transfer and wall shear stress. The dimensionless numbers characterizing a liquid–metal flow through a magnetic field are the Reynolds (Re) and the Stuart (N) numbers. The latter provides the ratio of the Lorentz forces and the inertial forces. A liquid–metal flow in a laminar regime has been simulated in the absence of a magnetic field (ReH = 1000, N = 0), and in two different magnetic ribs configurations for increasing values of the Stuart number (ReH = 1000, N equal to 0.5, 2 and 5). The analysis of the resulting velocity, temperature and force fields has revealed the heat transport phenomena governing these magneto-hydro-dynamic flows. Moreover, it has been noticed that, by increasing the strength of the magnetic field, the convective heat transfer increases with local Nusselt numbers that are as much 27.0% larger if compared to those evaluated in the absence of the magnetic field. Such a convective heat transfer enhancement has been obtained at expenses of the pressure drop, which increases more than twice with respect to the non-magnetic case.  相似文献

A polynomial expansion procedure and the ADO (analytical discrete-ordinates) method are used to solve a collection of basic flow problems based on the linearized Boltzmann equation for rigid-sphere interactions and the Cercignani–Lampis boundary conditions with a free choice of the accommodation coefficients at each boundary. In particular, three classical problems defined by flow in a plane-parallel channel (Poiseuille, thermal-creep, and Couette flow) are solved (essentially) analytically and evaluated to a very high numerical standard. Some comparisons with known kinetic models are also reported.  相似文献

The gas–liquid–solid mini fluidized bed (GLSMFB) combines the advantages of fluidized bed and micro-reactor, and meets the requirements for safety and efficiency of green development of process industry. However, there are few studies on its flow performance and no studies on its mass and heat transfer performance. In this paper, the characteristics of gas–liquid mass transfer in a GLSMFB were studied in order to provide basic guidance for the study of GLSMFB reaction performance and application. Using CO2 absorption by NaOH as the model process, the gas–liquid mass transfer performance of GLSMFB was investigated. The results show that the liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient and the gas–liquid interfacial area both increase with the increase of the superficial gas velocity within the experimental parameter range under the same given superficial liquid velocity. At the same ratio of superficial gas to liquid velocity, the liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient increases with the increase of the superficial liquid velocity. Fluidized solid particles strengthen the liquid mass transfer process, and the liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient is about 13% higher than that of gas–liquid mini bubble column.  相似文献

This study performed a survey on existing correlations for interfacial area concentration (IAC) prediction and collected an IAC experimental database of two-phase flows taken under various flow conditions in large diameter pipes. Although some of these existing correlations were developed by partly using the IAC databases taken in the low-void-fraction two-phase flows in large diameter pipes, no correlation can satisfactorily predict the IAC in the two-phase flows changing from bubbly, cap bubbly to churn flow in the collected database of large diameter pipes. So this study presented a systematic way to predict the IAC for the bubbly-to-churn flows in large diameter pipes by categorizing bubbles into two groups (group 1: spherical or distorted bubble, group 2: cap bubble). A correlation was developed to predict the group 1 void fraction by using the void fraction for all bubble. The group 1 bubble IAC and bubble diameter were modeled by using the key parameters such as group 1 void fraction and bubble Reynolds number based on the analysis of Hibiki and Ishii (2001, 2002) using one-dimensional bubble number density and interfacial area transport equations. The correlations of IAC and bubble diameter for group 2 cap bubbles were developed by taking into account the characteristics of the representative bubbles among the group 2 bubbles and the comparison between a newly-derived drift velocity correlation for large diameter pipes and the existing drift velocity correlation of Kataoka and Ishii (1987) for large diameter pipes. The predictions from the newly-developed two-group IAC correlation were compared with the collected experimental data in gas–liquid bubbly to churn flow regimes in large diameter pipes and their mean absolute relative deviations were obtained to be 28.1%, 54.4% and 29.6% for group 1, group 2 and all bubbles respectively.  相似文献

Fischer–Tropsch (F–T) synthesis is an important route to achieve the clean fuel production. The performance of gas–liquid separation equipment involving in the progressive condensation and separation of light and heavy hydrocarbons in the oil-gas products has become a bottleneck restricting the smooth operation of the F–T process. In order to remove the bottleneck, a gas–liquid vortex separator with simple structure, low pressure drop and big separation capacity was designed to achieve the efficient separation between gas and droplets for a long period. The RSM (Reynolds Stress Model) and DPM (Discrete Phase Method) are employed to simulate the flow characteristics and liquid distribution in the separator. The results show that the separation efficiency is influenced by the flow field and liquid phase concentration in the annular zone. The transverse vortex at the top of spiral arm entrains the droplets with small diameter into the upper annular zone. The entrained droplets rotate upward at an angle of about 37.4°. The screw pitch between neighbor liquid threads is about 0.3 m. There is a top liquid ring in the top of annular zone, where the higher is the liquid phase concentration, the lower is the separation efficiency. It is found that by changing the operating condition and the annular zone height the vortex can be strengthened but not enlarged by the inlet velocity. The screw pitch is not affected by both inlet velocity and annular zone height. The liquid phase concentration in the top liquid ring decreases with both the increases of inlet velocity and annular zone height. The total pressure drop is almost not affected by the annular zone height but is obviously affected by the inlet velocity. When the height of annular zone is more than 940 mm, the separation efficiency is not changed. Therefore, the annular zone height of 940 mm is thought to be the most economical design.  相似文献

Liquid–liquid two-phase flow in microchannels is capable of boosting the heat removal rate in cooling processes. Formation of different two-phase flow patterns which affect the heat transfer rate is numerically investigated here in a T-junction containing water-oil flow. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM) is applied to solve the unsteady two-phase Navier–Stokes equations along with the level set (LS) equation in order to capture the interface between phases. It is shown that the two-phase flow pattern in microchannels depends on the flow initial condition which causes hysteresis effect in two-phase flow. In this study, the hysteresis is observed in flow pattern and consequently in the heat transfer rate. The effect of wall contact angle on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer in the microchannel is investigated to gain useful insight into the hysteresis phenomenon. It is observed that the hysteresis is significant in super-hydrophilic microchannels, while it disappears at the contact angle of 75°. The effect of water to oil flow rate ratio (Qwat/Qoil) on the heat transfer is also studied. The flow rate ratio has a negligible effect on the Nusselt number (Nu) in the dripping regime, while the Nu decreases with an increase of Qwat/Qoil in the co-flow regime. The thickness of the oil film, velocity, and temperature distribution are studied in the co-flow regime. It is revealed that the normalized slip velocity reduces at higher values of Qwat/Qoil, which causes a reduction in the averaged Nu. In dripping regimes, higher flow rate ratios lead to a more frequent generation of droplet/slugs at a smaller size. The passage of the slugs or droplets increases the local Nu. Larger droplets generated at lower flow rate ratios cause a larger increase in the local Nu than smaller droplets. The temperature and velocity field around the droplets are also illustrated to investigate the heat transfer improvement. The generated vortex at the tip of the oil jet causes an increase in the velocity and Nu on the water side.  相似文献

The study considers the prediction of the entrained liquid fraction in adiabatic gas–liquid annular two-phase flow in vertical pipes. Nine empirical correlations have been tested against an experimental data bank drawn together in this study containing 1504 points for 8 different gas–liquid combinations and 19 different tube diameters from 5.00 mm to 57.1 mm. The correlation of Sawant, Ishii and Mishima and the one of Oliemans, Pots and Trompé were found to best reproduce the available data. A new correlating approach, derived from both physical intuition and dimensional analysis and capable of providing further physical insight into the liquid film atomization process, was proposed and worked better than any of the existing methods. This new correlation is based on the core flow Weber number that is also a controlling dimensionless group in determining the wall shear stress and associated frictional pressure gradient of annular flows.  相似文献

Gas–Liquid two phase co-current flow in a vertical riser with an internal diameter of 127 mm was investigated in the churn flow pattern. This paper presents detailed experimental data obtained using a Wire Mesh Sensor. It shows that the most obvious features of the flow are huge waves travelling on the liquid film. Wisps, large tendrils of liquid and the product of incomplete atomisation, which had previously detected in smaller diameter pipes, have also been found in the larger diameter pipe employed here. The output of the Wire Mesh Sensor has been used to determine the overall void fraction. When examined within a drift flux framework, it shows a distribution coefficient of ∼1, in contrast to data for lower gas flow rates. Film thickness time series extracted from the Wire Mesh Sensor output have been examined and the trends of mean film thickness, that of the base film and the wave peaks are presented and discussed. The occurrence of wisps and their frequencies have been quantified.  相似文献

We numerically solve the time-dependent planar Poiseuille flow of a Johnson–Segalman fluid with added Newtonian viscosity. We consider the case where the shear stress/shear rate curve exhibits a maximum and a minimum at steady state. Beyond a critical volumetric flow rate, there exist infinite piecewise smooth solutions, in addition to the standard smooth one for the velocity. The corresponding stress components are characterized by jump discontinuities, the number of which may be more than one. Beyond a second critical volumetric flow rate, no smooth solutions exist. In agreement with linear stability analysis, the numerical calculations show that the steady-state solutions are unstable only if a part of the velocity profile corresponds to the negative-slope regime of the standard steady-state shear stress/shear rate curve. The time-dependent solutions are always bounded and converge to different stable steady states, depending on the initial perturbation. The asymptotic steady-state velocity solution obtained in start-up flow is smooth for volumetric flow rates less than the second critical value and piecewise smooth with only one kink otherwise. No selection mechanism was observed either for the final shear stress at the wall or for the location of the kink. No periodic solutions have been found for values of the dimensionless solvent viscosity as low as 0.01.  相似文献

A two-fluid model in the Eulerian–Eulerian framework has been implemented for the prediction of gas volume fraction, mean phasic velocities, and the liquid phase turbulence properties for gas–liquid upward flow in a vertical pipe. The governing two-fluid transport equations are discretized using the finite volume method and a low Reynolds number kɛ model is used to predict the turbulence field for the continuous liquid phase. In the present analysis, a fully developed one-dimensional flow is considered where the gas volume fraction profile is predicted using the radial force balance for the bubble phase. The current study investigates: (1) the turbulence modulation terms which represent the effect of bubbles on the liquid phase turbulence in the kε transport equations; (2) the role of the bubble induced turbulent viscosity compared to turbulence generated by shear; and (3) the effect of bubble size on the radial forces which results in either a center-peak or a wall-peak in the gas volume fraction profiles. The results obtained from the current simulation are generally in good agreement with the experimental data, and somewhat improved over the predictions of some previous numerical studies.  相似文献

The flow past a cylinder in a channel with the aspect ratio of 2:1 for the upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid and the Oldroyd-B fluid with the viscosity ratio of 0.59 is studied by using the Galerkin/Least-square finite element method and a p-adaptive refinement algorithm. A posteriori error estimation indicates that the stress-gradient error dominates the total error. As the Deborah number, De, approaches 0.8 for the UCM fluid and 0.9 for the Oldroyd-B fluid, strong stress boundary layers near the rear stagnation point are forming, which are characterized by jumps of the stress-profiles on the cylinder wall and plane of symmetry, huge stress gradients and rapid decay of the gradients across narrow thicknesses. The origin of the huge stress-gradients can be traced to the purely elongational flow behind the rear stagnation point, where the position at which the elongation rate is of 1/2De approaches the rear stagnation point as the Deborah number approaches the critical values. These observations imply that the cylinder problem for the UCM and Oldroyd-B fluids may have physical limiting Deborah numbers of 0.8 and 0.9, respectively. The project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (50335010 and 20274041) and the MOLDFLOW Comp. A new model coupling two basic models, the model based on interface tracking method and the two-fluid model, for simulating gas–liquid two-phase flow is presented. The new model can be used to simulate complex multiphase flow in which both large-length-scale interface and small-length-scale gas–liquid interface coexist. By the physical state and the length scale of interface, three phases are divided, including the liquid phase, the large-length-scale-interface phase (LSI phase) and the small-length-scale-interface phase (SSI phase). A unified solution framework shared by the two basic models is built, which makes it convenient to perform the solution process. Based on the unified solution framework, the modified MCBA–SIMPLE algorithm is employed to solve the Navier–Stokes equations for the proposed model. A special treatment called “volume fraction redistribution” is adopted for the special grids containing all three phases. Another treatment is proposed for the advection of large-length-scale interface when some portion of SSI phase coalesces into LSI phase. The movement of the large-length-scale interface is evaluated using VOF/PLIC method. The proposed model is equivalent to the two-fluid model in the zone where only the liquid phase and the SSI phase are present and to the model based on interface tracking method in the zone where only the liquid phase and the LSI phase are present. The characteristics of the proposed model are shown by four problems.  相似文献
