Using a range of complementary experiments, a detailed investigation into the behavior of dodecane-water emulsions stabilized by a mixture of silica nanoparticles and pure cationic surfactant has been made. Both emulsifiers prefer to stabilize o/w emulsions. At high pH, particles are ineffective emulsifiers, whereas surfactant-stabilized emulsions become increasingly stable to coalescence with concentration. In mixtures, no emulsion phase inversion occurs although synergism between the emulsifiers leads to enhanced stability at either fixed surfactant concentration or fixed particle concentration. Emulsions are most stable under conditions where particles have negligible charge and are most flocculated. Freeze fracture scanning electron microscopy confirms the presence of particle flocs at drop interfaces. At low pH, particles and surfactant are good emulsifiers alone. Synergism is also displayed in these mixtures, with the extent of creaming being minimum when particles are most flocculated. Experiments have been undertaken in order to offer an explanation for the latter synergy. By determining the adsorption isotherm of surfactant on particles in water, we show that surfactant addition initially leads to particle flocculation followed by re-dispersion. Using suitable contact angle measurements at oil-water-solid interfaces, we show that silica surfaces initially become increasingly hydrophobic upon surfactant addition, as well as surfactant adsorption lowering the oil-water interfacial tension. A competition exists between the influence of surfactant on the contact angle and the tension in the attachment energy of a particle to the interface.  相似文献

The stabilization of emulsions by a mixture of oppositely charged nanoparticles is investigated in relation to their behavior in water before emulsification. No emulsion can be prepared using either negatively or positively charged silica particles alone because the particles are too hydrophilic. Certain mixtures of the two particle types lead to heteroaggregation and a lowering of the net charge. Such mixtures, of increased hydrophobicity as verified by contact angle measurements, are capable of forming stable oil-in-water emulsions of excellent coalescence stability. The increased viscosity of the continuous phase also contributes to such stability.  相似文献

Organic itraconazole (ITZ) solutions were mixed with aqueous solutions to precipitate sub-300 nm particles over a wide range of energy dissipation rates, even for drug loadings as high as 86% (ITZ weight/total weight). The small particle sizes were produced with the stabilizer poloxamer 407, which lowered the interfacial tension, increasing the nucleation rate while inhibiting growth by coagulation and condensation. The highest nucleation rates and slowest growth rates were found at temperatures below 20 degrees C and increased with surfactant concentration and Reynolds number (Re). This increase in the time scale for growth reduced the Damkohler number (Da) (mixing time/precipitation time) to low values even for modest mixing energies. As the stabilizer concentration increased, the average particle size decreased and reached a threshold where Da may be considered to be unity. Da was maintained at a low value by compensating for a change in one variable away from optimum conditions (for small particles) by manipulating another variable. This tradeoff in compensation variables was demonstrated for organic flow rate vs Re, Re vs stabilizer concentration, stabilizer feed location (organic phase vs aqueous phase) vs stabilizer concentration, and stabilizer feed location vs Re. A decrease in the nucleation rate with particle density in the aqueous suspension indicated that secondary nucleation was minimal. A fundamental understanding of particle size control in antisolvent precipitation is beneficial for designing mixing systems and surfactant stabilizers for forming nanoparticles of poorly water soluble drugs with the potential for high dissolution rates.  相似文献

The properties of emulsions stabilized with surface-modified boehmite particles of 26 and 8 nm in diameter have been investigated. The surface-modified particles were prepared by mixing aqueous dispersions of cationic boehmite particles with aqueous solutions of the surfactant p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) or the nonsurfactant p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA). For the 26 nm particles, interfacial tension measurements indicate that p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid partitions between the particle surface and the oil-water interface, while p-toluenesulfonic acid remains on the particle surface. The partitioning of p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid supports the formation of emulsions, although in the absence of the particles the same surfactant concentration is not sufficient for emulsion stabilization. Due to the fast exchange kinetics, p-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid is gradually replaced by particles. At equilibrium, the interfacial tension in the presence of the surface-modified particles is between the values for the pure particles and the pure surfactant solutions. However, the interfacial tension is independent of the surfactant concentration used in the preparation of the particles. Reducing the particle size to 8 nm leads to increased emulsion stability, and thus, the minimum particle concentration required to prepare stable emulsions was reduced to 0.1 g/L. However, above approximately 3.5 mmol/L of the sulfonic acids, the small particles dissolve slowly, and the emulsion stability is lost. This mechanism can be used to trigger the collapse of the emulsions.  相似文献

We have used dynamic headspace analysis to investigate the evaporation rates of perfume oils from stirred oil-in-water emulsions into a flowing gas stream. We compare the behavior of an oil of low water solubility (limonene) and one of high water solubility (benzyl acetate). It is shown how the evaporation of an oil of low water solubility is selectively retarded and how the retardation effect depends on the oil volume fraction in the emulsion. We compare how the evaporation retardation depends on the nature of the adsorbed film stabilizing the emulsion. Surfactant films are less effective than adsorbed films of nanoparticles, and the retardation can be further enhanced by compression of the adsorbed nanoparticle films by preshrinking the emulsion drops.  相似文献

Abstract  

Oil-in-water emulsions can be stabilized by solid particles. These so-called Pickering emulsions are regularly used in many technological applications. Here we describe the efficiency of sol–gel-synthesized anatase nanoparticles with a diameter of 6 nm in stabilizing emulsions. Key parameters were the surface charge of the particles—depending on pH and salt concentration—and their contact angle—depending on the surface groups and the polarity of the oil phase. The effect of these properties on the stability of the emulsions was investigated. The sol–gel nanoparticles were most efficient in stabilizing emulsions at pH 3 (depending on the salt and particle concentration). Highly apolar oil phases (cyclohexane, n-hexane) were required to obtain stable emulsions with the investigated system and addition of salt or hydrophobic coupling molecules in the oil phase, such as long alkyl chain containing phosphonates, increased the stability of the emulsions.  相似文献

 The interaction of a nonionic polymeric surfactant with an anionic surfactant at the oil–water interface has been studied by its effects on the droplet size, stability and rheology of emulsions. Oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions were prepared using isoparaffinic oil and mixtures of a nonionic polymeric surfactant with an anionic surfactant. The macro-molecular surfactant was a graft copolymer with a backbone of polymethyl methacrylate and grafted polyethylene oxide (a graft copolymer with PEO chains of MW=750). The anionic surfactant was sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The stabiliza-tion of the emulsion droplets was found to be different when using one or the other surfactant. The mechanism of stabilization of emulsion droplets by the macro-molecular surfactant is of the steric type while the stabilization by anionic surfactant is of the electrostatic repulsion type. Emulsions stabilized with mixtures present both types of stabilization. Other effects on the preparation and stabilization of emulsions were found to be dependent on properties associated with the surfactant molecular weight such as the Marangoni effect and Gibbs elasticity. The initial droplet size of the emulsions showed a synergistic effect of the surfactant combination, showing a minimum for the mixtures compared to the pure components. Emulsion stability also shows a synergistic interaction of both surfactants. Rheological measurements allow for the estimation of the interparticle interaction when measured as a function of volume fraction. Most of the effects observed can be attributed to the differences in interfacial tension and droplet radius produced by both surfactants and their mixtures. The elastic moduli are well explained on the basis of droplet deformation. Ionic versus steric stabilization produce little difference in the observed rheology, the only important differences observed concerned the extent of the linear viscoelasticity region. The influence of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles on the emulsification of a triglyceride oil (Miglyol812) in the presence of charged surfactants (lecithin or oleylamine) and the long term stability of the resultant oil-in-water emulsions are reported. A synergistic effect of nanoparticles and surfactants in improving emulsification and stability to coalescence is evident only when the silica nanoparticles are initially added to the oil phase. When nanoparticles are included from the water phase, no synergistic stabilisation was observed due to electrostatic bridging or unfavourable attachment due to the repulsive electrostatic and hydration forces. Free energies of adsorption for silica nanoparticles at the oil-water interface calculated from experimentally determined interfacial tensions and three phase contact angles can be correlated to long-term emulsion stability only when silica is added from oil phase.  相似文献

A method of increasing the stability ofo/w emulsions and providing a potential additional barrier to drug release from the oil droplets is described. Diacryloyl derivatives of non-ionic block copolymers (poloxamers) have been used to stabilise isopropyl myristate in water emulsions. Cross-linking of these stabilisers at the oil-water interface produces a polymeric region which increases the stabilityo/w emulsions to centrifugation and of thew/o emulsions to creaming.  相似文献

Thermo-reversible silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) were prepared by the sodium borohydride reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) in the presence of a pentablock terpolymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM150-PEO136-PPO45-PEO136-PNIPAM150). The pentablock terpolymer-stabilized silver nanoparticles (Pentablock-S-Ag) were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). At temperatures below lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of Pentablock-S-Ag solutions, the obtained Ag-NPs are well-dispersed with spherical shape, and their sizes mainly depend upon the molar ratios of pentablock terpolymer to AgNO3; at temperatures above LCST, the size of Ag-NPs decreases and their aggregates are observed due to the collapse and shrinkage of the thermo-responsive PNIPAM and PPO segments. A reversible dispersion-aggregation process upon recyclically changing temperature is also observed.  相似文献

N,N-dimethyldodecylamine, hydrochloride and epichlorohydrin (molar ration is 2:1:1) were used to synthesize bis-quaternary ammonium Gemini surfactant with a hydroxyl in its spacer group by the one-pot method. This hydroxyl was sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid and then neutralized to bis-quaternary ammonium-sodium sulfate zwitterionic Gemini surfactant. The yield of the final product was 78%, and the melting point was 231–233°C. Its structure was characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, MS, and elemental analyses. A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effect of pH on the stability of oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by a commercial splittable surfactant Triton SP-190 by comparison with the results obtained by a common surfactant Triton X-100. The emulsion stability was explored by measuring the volume of oil phase separated and the size of the dispersed droplets. It was found that the addition of inorganic acids did not significantly affect the stability of emulsions stabilized by Triton X-100, but had a profound influence on the stability of emulsions stabilized by Triton SP-190. Moreover, the droplet size of a Triton X-100-stabilized emulsion and its dynamic interfacial activity were insensitive to acids. However, at lower pH the droplet size of the emulsions stabilized by Triton SP-190 was considerably increased. From the dynamic interfacial tension measurements the dynamic interfacial activity of Triton SP-190 at the oil/water interface was found to be strongly inhibited by the addition of acids, resulting in a slower decreasing rate of dynamic interfacial tension. The results demonstrate that the dramatic destabilization of Triton SP-190-stabilized emulsions could be realized by the use of acids, which evidently changed the interfacial properties of the surfactant and resulted in a higher coalescence rate of oil droplets.  相似文献

The aqueous two-phase system formed by the mixture of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) with a gemini surfactant O,O′-bis(sodium 2-lauricate)-p-benzenediol (C11pPHCNa) has been studied. Two two-phase regions were observed, one was a wide region in the cationic surfactant-rich side and the other in the vicinity of R = 1:1, where R is the mixing mole ratio of DTAB to C11pPHCNa in global solution. Multi-lamellar vesicles are formed in the concentrated upper phase of cationic surfactant-rich systems and spherical aggregates in the concentrated bottom phase at R = 1:1. The microstructure of the solution and the phase behavior of the aqueous two-phase system strongly depended on the total concentration and the composition of the system.  相似文献

Although surfactants and particles are often mixed together in emulsions, the contribution of each species to the stabilisation of the oil-water interface is poorly understood. We report the results of investigations into the formation of emulsions from solutions of surfactant in oil and aqueous suspensions of laponite. Depending on the salt concentration in the aqueous suspensions, the laponite dispersed as individual disc-shaped particles, 30 nm in diameter, or flocculated into aggregates tens of micrometres in diameter. At the concentrations studied, the flocculated particles alone stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. Synergistic interactions between the particles and octadecylamine at the oil-water interface reduced the average emulsion drop size, while antagonistic interactions with octadecanoic acid enhanced coalescence processes in the emulsions. The state of particle dispersion had dramatic effects on the emulsions formed. Measurements of the oil-water interfacial tension revealed the origins of the interactions between the surfactants and particles.  相似文献

Fully sulfonated poly(styrenesulfonate) brushes were grown from the surface of colloidal silica particles and used to prepare stable trichloroethylene-in-water and heptane-in-water Pickering emulsions. These particles were highly charged and colloidally stable in water but could not be dispersed in trichloroethylene or heptane. Both two-phase (emulsion plus neat water) and three-phase (emulsion separating neat oil and water phases) systems were observed, with water-continuous emulsion phases in all cases. Emulsion phases containing as much as 83% (v/v) oil were stable for over six months. Poly(styrenesulfonate)-grafted particles were very efficient emulsifiers; stable emulsion phases were prepared when using as little as 0.04 wt% particles. The emulsifying effectiveness of the poly(styrenesulfonate)-grafted silica particles can be attributed to the hydrophobicity of the vinylic polymer backbone that makes this highly charged polyelectrolyte unusually surface active at the oil/water interface.  相似文献

We compared the efficacy of Pickering crystals, a continuous phase crystal network, and a combination thereof against sedimentation and dispersed phase coalescence in water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. Using 20 wt % water-in-canola oil emulsions as our model, glycerol monostearate (GMS) permitted Pickering-type stabilization, whereas simultaneous usage of hydrogenated canola oil (HCO) and glycerol monooleate (GMO) primarily led to network-stabilized emulsions. A minimum of 4 wt % GMS or 10 wt % HCO was required for long-term sedimentation stability. Although there were no significant differences between the two in mean droplet size with time, the free water content of the network-stabilized emulsions was higher than Pickering-stabilized emulsions, suggesting higher instability. Microscopy revealed the presence of crystal shells around the dispersed phase in the GMS-stabilized emulsions, whereas in the HCO-stabilized emulsion, spherulitic growth in the continuous phase and on the droplet surface occurred. The displacement energy (E(disp)) to detach crystals from the oil-water interface was ~10(4) kT, and was highest for GMS crystals. Thermal cycling to induce dispersed phase coalescence of the emulsions resulted in desorption of both GMS and GMO from the interface, which we ascribed to solute-solvent hydrogen bonding between the emulsifier molecules and the solvent oil, based on IR spectra. Overall, Pickering crystals were more effective than network crystals for emulsion stabilization. However, the thermal stability of all emulsions was hampered by the diffusion of the molten emulsifiers from the interface.  相似文献
