Given 1≦p<∞ and a real Banach spaceX, we define thep-absolutely summing constantμ p(X) as inf{Σ i =1/m |x*(x i)|p p Σ i =1/mx ip p]1 p}, where the supremum ranges over {x*∈X*; ‖x*‖≤1} and the infimum is taken over all sets {x 1,x 2, …,x m} ⊂X such that Σ i =1/mx i‖>0. It follows immediately from [2] thatμ p(X)>0 if and only ifX is finite dimensional. In this paper we find the exact values ofμ p(X) for various spaces, and obtain some asymptotic estimates ofμ p(X) for general finite dimensional Banach spaces. Let μ be any probability measure onR with λ |x|dμ(x)<∞, and let μ* denote its associated Hardy and Littlewood maximal p.m. It is shown that for any p.m.v for which μ<ν<μ* in the usual stochastic order, there is a martingale (X t)0≦t≦1 for which sup0≦t≦1 X t andX 1 have respective p.m. 'sv and μ. The proof uses induction and weak convergence arguments; in special cases, explicit martingale constructions are given. These results provide a converse to results of Dubins and Gilat [6]; applications are made to give sharp martingale and ‘prophet’ inequalities. Summary A distribution on the unit sphere in q with a densityf(‖x v ) is considered where is ans(<q) dimensional subspace andx v is the part ofx in . For a large sample the estimation of , a test that and a test for rotational symmetry within is given. For several samples with possibly different subspaces but the samef, a test that is given. For all tests power functions for contiguous alternatives are given. For the special density proportional to expk‖x v 2, additional results are given. We present a formula for the Fourier transforms of order statistics in ℝ n showing that all these Fourier transforms are equal up to a constant multiple outside the coordinate planes in ℝ n . Fora 1≥...≥a n≥0 andq>0, denote by ℓ w,q n then-dimensional Lorentz space with the norm ‖(x 1,...,x n)‖=(a 1(x 1 * ) q +...+a n(x n * ) q )1/q , where (x 1 * ,...,x n * ) is the non-increasing permutation of the numbers |x 1|,...,|x n|. We use the above mentioned formula and the Fourier transform criterion of isometric embeddability of Banach spaces intoL q [10] to prove that, forn≥3 andq≤1, the space ℓ w,q n is isometric to a subspace ofL q if and only if the numbersa 1,...,a n form an arithmetic progression. Forq>1, all the numbersa i must be equal so that ℓ w,q n = ℓ q n . Consequently, the Lorentz function spaceL w,q(0, 1) is isometric to a subspace ofL q if and only ifeither 0<q<∞ and the weightw is a constant function (so thatL w,q=Lq),or q≤1 andw(t) is a decreasing linear function. Finally, we relate our results to the theory of positive definite functions. Suppose λ is a positive number. Basic theory of cardinal interpolation ensures the existence of the Gaussian cardinal functionL λ(x)
xR, satisfying the interpolatory conditionsL k = δ0k,kZ . One objective of this paper is to derive several additional properties ofL λ. For example, it is shown thatL λ possesses the signregularity property sgn[L λ(x)]=sgn[sin(πx)/(πx)],xR, and that |L λ (x)|≤2e 8 min {(⌊|x|⌋+1)-1,exp(-λ⌊|x|⌋)},xR. The analysis is based on a simple representation formula forL λ and employs some methods from classical function theory. A second consideration in the paper is the Gaussian cardinal-interpolation operatorL λ, defined by the equation (L λy)(x):=
,xR, y=(yk)kZ. On account of the exponential decay of the cardinal functionL λ,L λ is a well-defined linear map froml (Z) intoL (R). Its associated operatornorm ‖L λ‖ is called the Lebesgue constant ofL λ. The latter half of the paper establishes the following estimates for the Lebesgue constant: ‖L λ‖≍1, λ→∞, and ║Lλ║≍log(1/λ), λ→0+. Suitable multidimensional analogues of these results are also given. LetR=F{x 1, …, xk} be a prime affine p.i. ring andS a multiplicative closed set in the center ofR, Z(R). The structure ofG-rings of the formR s is completely determined. In particular it is proved thatZ(R s)—the normalization ofZ(R s) —is a prüfer ring, 1≦k.d(R s)≦p.i.d(R s) and the inequalities can be strict. We also obtain a related result concerning the contractability ofq, a prime ideal ofZ(R) fromR. More precisely, letQ be a prime ideal ofR maximal to satisfyQϒZ(R)=q. Then k.dZ(R)/q=k.dR/Q, h(q)=h(Q) andh(q)+k.dZ(R)/q=k.dz(R). The last condition is a necessary butnot sufficient condition for contractability ofq fromR.  相似文献

If 1<p<∞, there is a constantr p <1/2 so that ifr>r p only a bounded number of balls inl p of radiusr can be packed into the unit ball ofl p . We obtain the exact value of this bound for eachp andr as a consequence of several new inequalities relating the expressions Σλ i λ j x i x j p , Σλ i x i p and Σλ i /2 for sequences (x i ) 1 n l p and (λ i ) 1 n R.  相似文献

We introduce a geometrical property of norm one complemented subspaces ofC(K) spaces which is useful for computing lower bounds on the norms of projections onto subspaces ofC(K) spaces. Loosely speaking, in the dual of such a space ifx* is a w* limit of a net (x a * ) andx*=x*1+x*2 with ‖x*‖=‖x*1‖ + ‖x*2‖, then we measure how efficiently thex a * 's can be split into two nets converging tox*1 andx*2, respectively. As applications of this idea we prove that if for everyε>0,X is a norm (1+ε) complemented subspace of aC(K) space, then it is norm one complemented in someC(K) space, and we give a simpler proof that a slight modification of anl 1-predual constructed by Benyamini and Lindenstrauss is not complemented in anyC(K) space. A sequence (μ n) of probability measures on the real line is said to converge vaguely to a measureμ if∫ fdμ n∫ fdμ for every continuous functionf withcompact support. In this paper one investigates problems analogous to the classical central limit problem under vague convergence. Let ‖μ‖ denote the total mass ofμ andδ 0 denote the probability measure concentrated in the origin. For the theory of infinitesimal triangular arrays it is true in the present context, as it is in the classical one, that all obtainable limit laws are limits of sequences of infinitely divisible probability laws. However, unlike the classical situation, the class of infinitely divisible laws is not closed under vague convergence. It is shown that for every probability measureμ there is a closed interval [0,λ], [0,e −1] ⊂ [0,λ] ⊂ [0, 1], such thatβμ is attainable as a limit of infinitely divisible probability laws iffβ ε [0,λ]. In the independent identically distributed case, it is shown that if (x 1 + ... +x n)/a n, an → ∞, converges vaguely toμ with 0<‖μ‖<1, thenμ=‖μδ 0. If furthermore the ratiosa n+1/a n are bounded above and below by positive numbers, thenL(x)=P[|X 1|>x] is a slowly varying function ofx. Conversely, ifL(x) is slowly varying, then for everyβ ε (0, 1) one can choosea n → ∞ so that the limit measure=βδ 0. Path-closed sets
Given a digraphG = (V, E), call a node setTV path-closed ifv, v′ εT andw εV is on a path fromv tov′ impliesw εT. IfG is the comparability graph of a posetP, the path-closed sets ofG are the convex sets ofP. We characterize the convex hull of (the incidence vectors of) all path-closed sets ofG and its antiblocking polyhedron inR v , using lattice polyhedra, and give a minmax theorem on partitioning a given subset ofV into path-closed sets. We then derive good algorithms for the linear programs associated to the convex hull, solving the problem of finding a path-closed set of maximum weight sum, and prove another min-max result closely resembling Dilworth’s theorem.  相似文献

Letμ be a probability measure on [0, 1), invariant underS:xpx mod 1, and for which almost every ergodic component has positive entropy. Ifq is a real number greater than 1 for which logq/ logp is irrational, andT n sendsx toq nx mod 1, then for any ε>0 the measureμT n −1 will — for a set ofn of positive lower density — be within ε of Lebesgue measure.  相似文献

We ask for the maximum σ n γ of Σ i,j=1 nx i-x jγ, where x 1,χ,x n are points in the Euclidean plane R 2 with ‖xi-xj‖ ≦1 for all 1≦ i,jn and where ‖.‖γ denotes the γ-th power of the Euclidean norm, γ ≧ 1. (For γ =1 this question was stated by L. Fejes Tóth in [1].) We calculate the exact value of σ n γ for all γ γ 1,0758χ and give the distributions which attain the maximum σ n γ . Moreover we prove upper bounds for σ n γ for all γ ≧ 1 and calculate the exact value of σ 4 γ for all γ ≧ 1. We consider methods for regularising the least-squares solution of the linear system Ax=b. In particular, we propose iterative methods for solving large problems in which a trust-region bound ‖x‖≤Δ is imposed on the size of the solution, and in which the least value of linear combinations of ‖Axb2 q and a regularisation term ‖x2 p for various p and q=1,2 is sought. In each case, one or more “secular” equations are derived, and fast Newton-like solution procedures are suggested. The resulting algorithms are available as part of the ALAHAD optimization library. Letx kn=2θk/n,k=0,1 …n−1 (n odd positive integer). LetR n(x) be the unique trigonometric polynomial of order 2n satisfying the interpolatory conditions:R n(xkn)=f(xkn),R n (j)(xkn)=0,j=1,2,4,k=0,1…,n−1. We setw 2(t,f) as the second modulus of continuity off(x). Then we prove that |R n(x)-f(x)|=0(nw2(1/nf)). We also examine the question of lower estimate of ‖R n-f‖. This generalizes an earlier work of the author.  相似文献

LetL be a lattice and letU be ano-symmetric convex body inR n . The Minkowski functional ∥ ∥ U ofU, the polar bodyU 0, the dual latticeL *, the covering radius μ(L, U), and the successive minima λ i (L,U)i=1,...,n, are defined in the usual way. Let ℒ n be the family of all lattices inR n . Given a pairU,V of convex bodies, we define and kh(U, V) is defined as the smallest positive numbers for which, given arbitraryL∈ℒ n anduR n /(L+U), somevL * with ∥v V sd(uv, ℤ) can be found. Upper bounds for jh(U, U 0), j=k, l, m, belong to the so-called transference theorems in the geometry of numbers. The technique of Gaussian-like measures on lattices, developed in an earlier paper [4] for euclidean balls, is applied to obtain upper bounds for jh(U, V) in the case whenU, V aren-dimensional ellipsoids, rectangular parallelepipeds, or unit balls inl p n , 1≤p≤∞. The gaps between the upper bounds obtained and the known lower bounds are, roughly speaking, of order at most logn asn→∞. It is also proved that ifU is symmetric through each of the coordinate hyperplanes, then jh(U, U 0) are less thanCn logn for some numerical constantC.  相似文献

For Banach space operatorsT satisfying the Tadmor-Ritt condition ‖(zIT)−1‖≤C|z−1|−1, |z|>1, we show how to use the Riesz turndown collar theorem to estimate sup n≥0T n‖. A similar estimate is shown for lim sup n T n‖ in terms of the Ritt constantM=lim sup z→1‖(1−z)(zI−T)−1‖. We also obtain an estimate of the functional calculus for these operators proving, in particular, that ‖f(T)‖≤C qf Mult , where ‖·‖ Mult stands for the multiplier norm of the Cauchy-Stieltjes integrals over a Lusin type cone domain depending onC and a parameterq, 0<q<1. Notation.D denotes the open unit disc of the complex plane,D={z∈ℂ:|z|<1}, andT={z∈ℂ:|z|=1} is the unit circle.H is the Banach algebra of bounded analytic functions onD equipped with the supremum norm ‖.‖.  相似文献
