Epitaxial Fe3O4(0 0 1) thin films (with a thickness in the range of 10-20 nm) grown on MgO substrates were characterized using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) and investigated using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), channeling (RBS-C) experiments and X-ray reflectometry (XRR). The Mg out-diffusion from the MgO substrate into the film was observed for the directly-deposited Fe3O4/MgO(0 0 1) films. For the Fe3O4/Fe/MgO(0 0 1) films, the Mg diffusion was prevented by the Fe layer and the surface layer is always a pure Fe3O4 layer. Annealing and ion beam mixing induced a very large interface zone having a spinel and/or wustite formula in the Fe3O4-on-Fe film system.  相似文献

The growth and oxidation of a thin film of Ni3Al grown on Ni(1 0 0) were studied using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). At 300 K, a 12 Å thick layer of aluminium was deposited on a Ni(1 0 0) surface and subsequently annealed to 1150 K resulting in a thin film of Ni3Al which grows with the (1 0 0) plane parallel to the (1 0 0) surface of the substrate. Oxidation at 300 K of Ni3Al/Ni(1 0 0) until saturation leads to the growth of an aluminium oxide layer consisting of different alumina phases. By annealing up to 1000 K, a well ordered film of the Al2O3 film is formed which exhibits in the EEL spectra Fuchs-Kliewer phonons at 420, 640 and 880 cm−1. The LEED pattern of the oxide shows a twelvefold ring structure. This LEED pattern is explained by two domains with hexagonal structure which are rotated by 90° with respect to each other. The lattice constant of the hexagonal structure amounts to ∼2.87 Å. The EELS data and the LEED pattern suggest that the γ-Al2O3 phase is formed which grows with the (1 1 1) plane parallel to the Ni(1 0 0) surface.  相似文献

The growth, structure, and morphology of ultrathin iron oxide layers formed on a Fe(1 1 0) single crystal surface are investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and grazing ion scattering. For Fe oxidation by atomic instead of molecular oxygen, the gas exposure can be reduced by almost two orders of magnitude because surface sticking and dissociation are not limiting the growth process. A well-ordered FeO(1 1 1) film with low defect density is only obtained with atomic oxygen. Compared to the bulk, the FeO lattice is laterally compressed by about 5-6% resulting in an in-plane oxygen (Fe) nearest-neighbor distance of 2.87 Å. Independent of the preparation method, long-range structural order is poor if the oxide film thickness is increased to 3-5 layers. This is attributed to the relatively large lattice mismatch between FeO(1 1 1) and Fe(1 1 0).  相似文献

Low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation-excited angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to characterize Cu-oxide overlayers on the Zn-terminated ZnO(0 0 0 1) surface. Deposition of Cu on the ZnO(0 0 0 1)-Zn surface results in the formation of Cu clusters with (1 1 1) top terraces. Oxidation of these clusters by annealing at 650 K in O2 atmosphere (1.3 × 10−4 Pa) leads to an ordered Cu2O overlayer with (1 1 1) orientation. Good crystallinity of the Cu2O(1 1 1) overlayer is proved by energy dispersion of one of Cu2O valence bands. The Cu2O(1 1 1) film exhibits a strong p-type semiconducting nature with the valence band maximum (VBM) of 0.1 eV below the Fermi level. The VBM of ZnO at the Cu2O(1 1 1)/ZnO(0 0 0 1)-Zn interface is estimated to be 2.4 eV, yielding the valence-band offset of 2.3 eV.  相似文献

The interaction of atomic hydrogen with thin epitaxial FeO(1 1 1) and Fe3O4(1 1 1) films was studied by TDS, XPS and LEED. On the thin, one Fe-O bilayer thick FeO film, partial reduction occurs in two steps during exposure. It ends after removal of 1/4 monolayer (ML) of oxygen with a 2 × 2 pattern appearing in LEED. This FeO0.75 film is passive against further reduction. The first reduction step saturates after removal of ∼0.2 ML and shows autocatalytic kinetics with the oxygen vacancies formed during reduction causing acceleration. The second step is also autocatalytic and is related with reduction to the final composition and an improvement of the 2 × 2 order. A structure model explaining the two-step reduction is proposed. On the thick Fe3O4 film, irregular desorption bursts of H2O and H2 were observed during exposure. Their occurrence appears to depend on the film quality and thus on surface order. Because of the healing of reduction-induced oxygen vacancies by exchange of oxygen or iron with the bulk, a change of the surface composition was not visible. The existence of partially reduced oxide phases resistant even to atomic hydrogen is relevant to the mechanism of dehydrogenation reactions using iron oxides as catalysts.  相似文献

The interaction of vanadium oxide with epitaxial anatase films exposing (1 0 1) terraces was characterized. The TiO2 films were grown on vicinal LaAlO3 (1 1 0) substrates by oxygen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (OPA-MBE); reflection high energy and low energy electron diffraction (RHEED and LEED) indicated that the films exposed (1 0 1) terraces of the anatase TiO2 polymorph. When a vanadium oxide monolayer was deposited onto the anatase surface by OPA-MBE at 725 K, only (1 × 1) RHEED and LEED patterns were observed. The V X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) peak intensities indicated that the monolayer wetted the anatase surface and so the diffraction patterns were attributed to an epitaxial vanadia layer. Analysis of the vanadium oxide monolayer by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies revealed that the V was predominantly 5+. When the vanadia coverage was increased at 725 K, Auger electron spectra showed only very slow attenuation of the anatase Ti peaks while spots began to develop in RHEED patterns recorded along the LaAlO3 direction; both indicative of 3-D cluster formation. In the orthogonal direction, the RHEED patterns showed unusual diagonal streaks. Meanwhile, the (1 × 1) LEED pattern persisted even after 30 nm of vanadia was deposited. This was attributed to gaps between the 3-D clusters exposing the epitaxial monolayer. Core level XPS spectra of the 3-D clusters revealed a broad V 2p3/2 peak that was centered at the position expected for V4+ but could be deconvoluted into three peaks corresponding to V3+, V4+, and V5+. It is shown that crystallographic shear that accommodates such variations in the oxygen content of V oxides can lead to the diagonal streaks in RHEED patterns recorded along the LaAlO3 [0 0 1] direction even as the pattern in the orthogonal direction shows sharp transmission spots. The results show that vanadia growth on anatase (1 0 1) proceeds through the Stranski-Krastanov mode with a strong vanadia-titania interaction stabilizing a dispersed vanadia monolayer. The results are compared with previous data for vanadia growth on anatase (0 0 1) where smooth, epitaxial VO2 films grow ad infinitum.  相似文献

We have investigated a BC3 covered NbB2(0 0 0 1) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The STM images reveal characteristic features of a Moiré pattern reflecting an incommensurate relation of the BC3 sheet with the substrate: bright protrusions with the periodicity of the substrate lattice are modulated in intensity with the periodicity of the BC3 lattice. As a result, the surface exhibits nm-scale patchy regions with either the √3 × √3 or the 1 × 1 structure of the substrate. The two-dimensional Fourier transformation pattern of the STM image is consistent with the LEED pattern proving the epitaxial and incommensurate relationship between BC3 surface sheet and substrate. No feature of a predicted superconducting gap was found in STS spectra measured at 5 K.  相似文献

We have investigated the interaction of molecular oxygen with the Ag(1 0 0) surface in a temperature range from 130 K to 470 K and an oxygen partial pressure ranging up to 10 mbar by scanning tunneling microscopy, low electron energy diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy and ab initio density functional calculations. We find that at 130 K, following oxygen exposures of 6000 Langmuirs O2, the individual oxygen atoms are randomly distributed on the surface. When the sample is exposed to 10 mbar O2 at room temperature, small, p(2 × 2) reconstructed patches are formed on the surface. After oxidation at ≈470 K and 10 mbar O2 pressure the surface undergoes a c(4 × 6) reconstruction coexisting with a (6 × 6) superstructure. By ab initio thermodynamic calculations it is shown that the c(4 × 6) reconstruction is an oxygen adsorption induced superstructure which is thermodynamically stable for an intermediate range of oxygen chemical potential.  相似文献

The growth and morphology of ultra-thin CeO2(1 1 1) films on a Cu(1 1 1) substrate were investigated by means of low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The films were grown by physical vapor deposition of cerium in an oxygen atmosphere at different sample temperatures. The preparation procedure is based on a modification of a previous method suggested by Matolin and co-workers [1], involving growth at elevated temperature (520 K). Here, LEED shows good long range ordering with a “(1.5 × 1.5)” superstructure, but STM reveals a three-dimensional growth mode (Vollmer-Weber) with formation of a closed film only at larger thickness. Using a kinetically limited growth process by reactive deposition at low sample temperatures (100 K) and subsequent annealing, we show that closed layers of ceria with atomically flat terraces can be prepared even in the regime of ultra-thin films (1.5 ML). Closed and atomically flat ceria films of larger thickness (3 ML) are obtained by applying a multistep preparation procedure, in which successive ceria layers are homoepitaxially grown on this initial film. The resulting overlayers show strong similarities with the morphology of CeO2(1 1 1) single crystal surfaces, suggesting the possibility to model bulk ceria by thin film systems.  相似文献

We have employed low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to follow the epitaxial growth of thin films of TiO2 on W(1 0 0). The films were grown both by metal vapour deposition of titanium onto the substrate in UHV with subsequent annealing in a low partial pressure of oxygen, and by metal vapour deposition in a low partial pressure of oxygen. LEED patterns showed the characteristic patterns of (1 1 0) oriented rutile. A systematic spot splitting was observed and attributed to a stepped surface. The calculated step height was found to be in good agreement with that expected for rutile TiO2(1 1 0), 3.3 Å. Titanium core level shifts were used to identify oxidation states as a function of film thickness allowing the interpretation in terms of a slightly sub-stoichiometric interface layer in contact with the substrate. In combination with the LEED patterns, the film structure is therefore determined to be (1 1 0) oriented rutile with a comparable level of stoichiometry to UHV prepared bulk crystals. The ordered step structure indicates considerable structural complexity of the surface.  相似文献

We have studied the epitaxial growth of Au and Pt layers on Fe3O4(1 1 1) as a function of the deposition temperature and thickness. The layers were deposited by UHV sputtering and the structural properties were investigated by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), X-ray experiments and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The epitaxial growth of both metals was obtained whatever the deposition conditions but the wetting is however different for the two metals. Comparison between the coverage ratios of Au and Pt is correlated with their surface and interfaces energies. The optimum conditions to achieve a 2D flat epitaxial metallic layer are determined.  相似文献

We have investigated the growth of Co nanoparticles on θ-Al2O3/CoAl(1 0 0) by means of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Due to Volmer-Weber growth, Co forms particles with a mean diameter of approximately 2.5 nm and height of 0.8 nm. Even on the entirely covered oxide, there is no Ostwald ripening and Co particles stay structurally isolated. The nanoparticles exhibit a small size distribution and tend to form chains, as predetermined by the streak structure of the oxide template. For sufficient high coverages Co-core-CoO-shell nanoparticles may be evidenced, which is explained as a result of surfactant oxygen. The nanostructured particles may open the door to numerous applications, such as in catalysis and magnetoelectronic applications, where large areas of ordered nanodots are desired.  相似文献

We have studied adsorption of CO on Fe3O4(1 1 1) films grown on a Pt(1 1 1) substrate by temperature programmed desorption (TPD), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Three adsorption states are observed, from which CO desorbs at ∼110, 180, and 230 K. CO adsorbed in these states exhibits stretching frequencies at ∼2115-2140, 2080 and 2207 cm−1, respectively. The adsorption results are discussed in terms of different structural models previously reported. We suggest that the Fe3O4(1 1 1) surface is terminated by 1/2 ML of iron, with an outermost 1/4 ML consisting of octahedral Fe2+ cations situated above an 1/4 ML of tetrahedral Fe3+ ions, in agreement with previous theoretical calculations. The most strongly bound CO is assigned to adsorption to Fe3+ cations present on the step edges.  相似文献

Reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to characterise the interaction of standard and fully deuterated glycine with Cu(1 0 0) and Cu(1 1 1). RAIRS shows clearly that the surface interaction leads to formation of the adsorbed deprotonated glycinate (NH2CH2COO-) species, with some evidence for changes in orientation with coverage previously seen on Cu(1 1 0). Qualitative low energy electron diffraction observations were also conducted to characterise the long-range ordering, although effects of electron-beam-induced radiation damage limited the information obtained. Nevertheless, the results do suggest some subtle isotopic-mass-related structural variations. The results are discussed in the context of previously published scanning tunnelling microscopy and photoelectron diffraction measurements.  相似文献

Well ordered V2O3(0 0 0 1) films were prepared on Au(1 1 1) and W(1 1 0) substrates. These films are terminated by a layer of vanadyl groups under typical UHV conditions. Reduction by electron bombardment may remove the oxygen atoms of the vanadyl layer, leading to a surface terminated by vanadium atoms. The interaction of oxygen with the reduced V2O3(0 0 0 1) surface has been studied in the temperature range from 80 to 610 K. Thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS), high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) were used to study the adsorbed oxygen species. Low temperature adsorption of oxygen on reduced V2O3(0 0 0 1) occurs both dissociatively and molecularly. At 90 K a negatively charged molecular oxygen species is observed. Upon annealing the adsorbed oxygen species dissociates, re-oxidizing the reduced surface by the formation of vanadyl species. Density functional theory was employed to calculate the structure and the vibrational frequencies of the O2 species on the surface. Using both cluster and periodic models, the surface species could be identified as η2-peroxo () lying flat on surface, bonded to the surface vanadium atoms. Although the O-O vibrational normal mode involves motions almost parallel to the surface, it can be detected by infrared spectroscopy because it is connected with a change of the dipole moment perpendicular to the surface.  相似文献

The adsorption of CCl4 on Ag(1 1 1) has been investigated from 100 K to 300 K using absolute sticking probability measurement, temperature programmed desorption, Auger electron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. At 100 K, CCl4 adsorbs molecularly with a sticking probability of 1.0, forming a (3 × 3) adsorption structure. At 300 K the following overall reaction occurs,
2CCl4(g)→4Cl(chem)+C2Cl4(g),  相似文献

The formation of a well-ordered p(2 × 2) overlayer of atomic nitrogen on the Pt(1 1 1) surface and its reaction with hydrogen were characterized with reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The p(2 × 2)-N overlayer is formed by exposure of ammonia to a surface at 85 K that is covered with 0.44 monolayer (ML) of molecular oxygen and then heating to 400 K. The reaction between ammonia and oxygen produces water, which desorbs below 400 K. The only desorption product observed above 400 K is molecular nitrogen, which has a peak desorption temperature of 453 K. The absence of oxygen after the 400 K anneal is confirmed with AES. Although atomic nitrogen can also be produced on the surface through the reaction of ammonia with an atomic, rather than molecular, oxygen overlayer at a saturation coverage of 0.25 ML, the yield of surface nitrogen is significantly less, as indicated by the N2 TPD peak area. Atomic nitrogen readily reacts with hydrogen to produce the NH species, which is characterized with RAIRS by an intense and narrow (FWHM ∼ 4 cm−1) peak at 3322 cm−1. The areas of the H2 TPD peak associated with NH dissociation and the XPS N 1s peak associated with the NH species indicate that not all of the surface N atoms can be converted to NH by the methods used here.  相似文献

We attempt to correlate qualitatively the surface structure with the chemical activity for a metal surface, Cr(1 1 0), and one of its surface oxides, Cr2O3(0 0 0 1)/Cr(1 1 0). The kinetics and dynamics of CO2 adsorption have been studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Aug er electron spectroscopy (AES), and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), as well as adsorption probability measurements conducted for impact energies of Ei = 0.1-1.1 eV and adsorption temperatures of Ts = 92-135 K. The Cr(1 1 0) surface is characterized by a square shaped LEED pattern, contamination free Cr AES, and a single dominant TDS peak (binding energy Ed = 33.3 kJ/mol, first order pre-exponential 1 × 1013 s−1). The oxide exhibits a hexagonal shaped LEED pattern, Cr AES with an additional O-line, and two TDS peaks (Ed = 39.5 and 30.5 kJ/mol). The initial adsorption probability, S0, is independent of Ts for both systems and decreases exponentially from 0.69 to 0.22 for Cr(1 1 0) with increasing Ei, with S0 smaller by ∼0.15 for the surface oxide. The coverage dependence of the adsorption probability, S(Θ), at low Ei is approx. independent of coverage (Kisliuk-shape) and increases initially at large Ei with coverage (adsorbate-assisted adsorption). CO2 physisorbs on both systems and the adsorption is non-activated and precursor mediated. Monte Carlo simulations (MCS) have been used to parameterize the beam scattering data. The coverage dependence of Ed has been obtained by means of a Redhead analysis of the TDS curves.  相似文献

Scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction (PhD), using the O 1s and V 2p photoemission signals, together with multiple-scattering simulations, have been used to investigate the structure of the V2O3(0 0 0 1) surface. The results support a strongly-relaxed half-metal termination of the bulk, similar to that found in earlier studies of Al2O3(0 0 0 1) and Cr2O3(0 0 0 1) surfaces based on low energy electron and surface X-ray diffraction methods. However, the PhD investigation fails to provide definitive evidence for the presence or absence of surface vanadyl (VO) species associated with atop O atoms on the surface layer of V atoms. Specifically, the best-fit structure does not include these vanadyl species, although an alternative model with similar relaxations but including vanadyl O atoms yields a reliability-factor within the variance of that of the best-fit structure.  相似文献

Thin Pd films (1-10 monolayers, ML) were deposited at 35 K on a Pt(1 1 1) single crystal and on an oxygen-terminated FeO(1 1 1) monolayer supported on Pt(1 1 1). Low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, and Kr and CO temperature programmed desorption techniques were used to investigate the annealing induced changes in the film surface morphology. For growth on Pt(1 1 1), the films order upon annealing to 500 K and form epitaxial Pd(1 1 1). Further annealing above 900 K results in Pd diffusion into the Pt(1 1 1) bulk and Pt-Pd alloy formation. Chemisorption of CO shows that even the first ordered monolayer of Pd on Pt(1 1 1) has adsorption properties identical to bulk Pd(1 1 1). Similar experiments conducted on FeO(1 1 1) indicate that 500 K annealing of a 10 ML thick Pd deposit also yields ordered Pd(1 1 1). In contrast, annealing of 1 and 3 ML thick Pd films did not result in formation of continuous Pd(1 1 1). We speculate that for these thinner films Pd diffuses underneath the FeO(1 1 1).  相似文献
